Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is in the process of evolving a computer-based information system which will process all of the material selected for abstracting in the area of chemistry and chemical engineering and its related fields such as the earth sciences and technologies. This system is already operational to some extent and is expected to be fully utilized by 1971. The objective of CAS is to make chemical and related information more readily available, more usable and more used. Chemical Abstracts handle some 5000 abstracts weekly from 13, 000 journals and patents from 25 nations. These cover all of the 80 CA subject sections which relate to chemistry and also extend into areas of interest to geologists, mineralogists, and mining engineers. In this way, CAS fulfills its objective of complete coverage of its major fields, informative abstracting, and indexing to maximum specificity. The concept of a computer-based information system is that of a single machine-language data base into which the results of intellectual analysis of the literature are entered and from which computer programs produce a variety of publications and services applicable to the needs of a wide range of users.

I. INTRODUCTION. LIME-ROASTING is a term proposed by Ingalls 1 for the operation of forcing air under pressure through a mixture of galena and lime at the kindling-temperature with the object of oxidizing lead and sulphur and of fritting or fusing the charge. If, finely-divided galena were treated in this manner without the addition of lime, the heat set free by the oxidation of part of the lead and the sulphur would be sufficiently great to fuse undecomposed sulphide, and thus stop desulphurization. Besides the chemical action that the addition of lime, limestone or gypsum to the charge may have, the admixture has the physical effect that it keeps the particles of galena separated from one another and accessible to the oxidizing effect of the air. At present, three methods of lime-roasting are carried out on a working-scale, the Huntington-Heberlein, the Carmichael-Bradford and the Savelsberg2 processes. In the last, which interests us here, an 8-ton charge is made up of galena, limestone and perhaps some siliceous or ferruginous flux; the whole is crushed to pass a screen with 3-mm. holes and moistened with 5 per cent of water. It is fed gradually into a bowl-shaped converter, 6.56 ft. in diameter, supported by trunnions attached to a truck. On the .bottom the converter has a grate with blast-inlet beneath. Manufacturers of filtering, thickening or clarifying equipment, have been active in developing machines to meet increasingly rigid operator requirements, and the innovations resulting from this effort are moving into commercial applications. In general, the results of these applications are reported to be good. Little has been reported on progress in theory. The growing insistence on the part of pollution control agencies that waste water discharged into streams contain less and less suspended solids is being felt by a broad cross section of industry. A new clarifier, based on the often rediscovered fact that suspended solids settle more rapidly in inclined channels, is being marketed by Neptune MicroFLOC of Corvallis, Ore. This unit employs modules of inclined tubes, mounted in the upper zone of the clarifier, which carry the water flow. These were developed for light solids, such as those encountered in domestic water treatment and in paper mill waste water. In these applications, flow rates up to about three times those permissible in conventional clarifiers are reported to give comparable overflow turbidity. By combining these units with mixed media filters, high clarity may be obtained with minimum capital. Use of such units in the metallurgical industry, particularly where water reuse or effluent quality is important, should grow.

THE mineral industries in this country have now had about a year of national planning. Al. though the period is short, the volume of activity and legislation designed to make that planning effective has been nothing short of enormous. Those who have been privileged to see and study a few of the codes to regulate our mineral industry, such as those for oil, coal, steel, and copper, are driven to the conclusion that nothing was really known about the proper way to conduct those industries in this country prior to June, 1933; or if anything was known, nobody in actual practice made use of that knowledge. And yet those industries, in days gone by, helped to make this country the most prosperous in the world, and to maintain a standard of living even today higher than that of any other country. Without wishing to assume any first-hand knowledge of the Russian standard of living, I must confess that the evidence seems to indicate that even with dictatorial authority, national planning encounters unexpected difficulties. Returning the original soil material to the surface of smoothed mine spoils is a practical means of restoring agricultural productivity. Research has established that high-sodium spoils in North Dakota: (1) must be covered with about 70 cm of soil material to achieve maximum production; (2) top-soil must be segregated and spread separately from subsoil; (3) potential production depends on the quality of the soil material returned; and (4) erosion and upward salt movement must be controlled for sustained production. Erosion is best controlled by reducing final grades as much as possible during the smoothing process followed by prompt establishment of vegetation.

The dissolution kinetics of type 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy have been investigated under the well-defined hydrodynamic conditions produced by the rotating-disc sample geometry. In addition, the mutual solubilities of iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese from 304 stainless steel in the eutectic alloy were determined over the temperature range 450" to 985°C. The convective -diffusion model for mass transport from a rotating disc was used to interpret the experinlental dissolution data. The dissolution process was found to be liquid-diffusion-controlled under specific conditions of temperature and Reynolds number. Liquid penetration into the 304 stainless steel resulted in a reduction of the di,ffusion-controlled mass flux and thus precluded the calculation of the diffusion coeficients of the four components from 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy. The convective-diffusion model for diffusional limitations of electrode reactions and mass transport at the tationssurface of a rotating disc set forth by Levich 1,2 has found wide applicability in the investigation of electrochemical and dissolution phenomena in aqueous systems. Riddiford 3 and Rosner have reviewed the model and also include numerous references on work of this nature. More recently the rotating-disc system has been applied to the investigation of hetereogeneous reactions in liquid-metal systems. Shurygin and Kryuk 5 have measured the dissolution rates of carbon discs in molten Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-P, and Fe-Ni alloys. Shurygin and shantarin6 also studied the dissolution kinetics of iron, molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten, and the carbides of chromium and tungsten in Fe-C solutions with a rotating-disc sample geometry. In these systems it was possible to distinguish between diffusion and reaction control mainly through experimental confirmation of the velocity dependence of the dissolution rate predicted by the model. However in the absence of dependable solubility data and the virtual lack of diffusion data in these systems, a quantitative check of the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the rate was not possible. In many instances, estimates of the activation energy for solute diffusion and the diffusion coefficient based upon the experimental dissolution data are not credible. A recent study by this author7 has resulted in a critical test of the model in a liquid-metal system. The solution rates of tantalum discs in liquid tin were measured over a wide range of temperature and velocity conditions. In addition, the solubility and diffusion coefficient of tantalum in liquid tin were determined as a function of temperature. The latter data were used with the model to predict both the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the dissolution flux. In that work it was also deemed necessary to reevaluate the solution to the convective diffusion equation to incorporate the effect of the lower range of Schmidt numbers encountered in liquid-metal systems. Good agreement between the model and the experimental dissolution data in the region of diffusion control was obtained in the Ta-Sn system. The Bi-Sn eutectic alloy is used as a seal between the reactor head and the reactor vessel in the Experimental Breeder Reactor-11. The alloy is fused periodically prior to fuel-handling operations. In that connection, it was necessary to investigate the compatibility of the liquid alloy with the type 304 stainless-steel containment material. The results of a rotating-disc study in this multicomponent system are presented. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The 5.08-cm-diam discs were machined from 0.317-cm-thick plate. Chemical analysis information for the type 304 SS material is given in Table I. The discs were ground flat on metallographic paper and given a final polish on Linde B abrasive. A thin support rod was threaded into the disc and the region around the threads was fused under an inert gas. The support rod was fitted with a quartz protection tube and then was attached to a supporting shaft which passed through a rotary push-pull vacuum seal. The disc and supporting shafts were dynamically balanced prior to insertion into the furnace tube. The apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The 58 pct Bi-42 pct Sn eutectic alloy melts were prepared from 99.995 pct pure Bi and Sn by fusing the components in a 7-cm-ID Pyrex crucible. The system in which the melts were made was evacuated to a pressure of 1 x 10-6 Torr and back-filled with purified argon several times before melting the charge. IN THE literature on the elimination of metalloids in basic open-hearth practice, there are a great many heats recorded in which excellent data on changes in slag and metal composition during refining are given, but in almost all of these heats either temperature data or weights and analysis of charge are unrecorded and observations on the physical charac- teristics of the slag are almost always lacking. With these points in mind, a test heat was made in which as complete as data possible on all the factors that affect the elimination of metalloids were obtained.

The phase equilibria of the Hg-Th system over the composition range 0-100 pct Th and temperatures up to 1000°C have been studied for a small-volume, closed system. The solubility of Th in liquid Hg is about 5 pct at 300°C and decreases sharply with decreasing temperature. Two intermediate phases occur, Hg3 Th and HgTh. The structures of these are hexagonal (nonideally close-packed) and face-centered cubic, respectively. The HgTh phase decomposes eutectoidally at 400°-500°C. The solubility of Hg in solid thorium seems to be negligible. AFULL-phase diagram for this system would have to be defined on temperature-composition-pressure co-ordinates. This paper describes the pseudo phase diagram of a closed system, that is, where the alloy enclosed in a small volume equilibrates with a vapor pressure of mercury dictated by composition and temperature. Because of the experimental difficulties in studying a system of this nature, many of the phase relations can only be sketched. Alloy Preparation Alloys over the full range of composition were made from triple distilled mercury and one of two grades of thorium. For the bulk of the work, a calcium-reduced metal in sintered pellet form of reported 99+ pct total thorium content was used. Arc-melted specimens of this thorium gave a hardness of 135 VPN. The microstructure showed small primary dendrites of ThO2. A number of alloy compositions were made with a high-purity, iodide-decomposition thorium metal. The are-melted hardness of a button of this material was 35 VPN. Although the microstructure of the arc-melted specimens showed no dendrites of ThO2, there was definite evidence of an unidentified phase enveloping the grain bound-aries. There were no distinguishable differences between the constitution of alloys made with the two grades of thorium metal. Under normal conditions thorium is not wetted by liquid mercury. The film of ThO2 on all thorium metal cannot be penetrated by either liquid or vaporous mercury. It was therefore necessary to comminute thorium in the presence of mercury under such conditions that oxide films could not reform on the newly exposed metal surfaces. This was accomplished by the use of a high-speed, carbide-tipped rotary cutter incorporated in a chamber purged with argon and connected at the bottom to a demountable Vycor bulb containing a weighed amount of mercury. This experimental device is fully described in a separate paper.1 Alloy compositions were calculated by weighing the empty bulb, the bulb containing the mercury, and the bulb containing the mercury and the thorium chips. Many alloys were analyzed chemically for thorium and/or mercury after subsequent homogenization; the agreement between analyzed and calculated compositions was invariably very close. Bulbs containing the requisite amounts of mercury and fine thorium chips were clamped off, removed to a sealing unit, evacuated and sealed. Amalgamation under these conditions proceeded rapidly even at room temperature. To insure homogeneity, the specimens were annealed to 300-400°C. Alloys containing less than 30 pct Th remained pasty after all treatments, indicating an equilibrium condition of liquid plus solid. Alloys with more than 30 pct Th were transformed into a dark powdery product. These latter specimens were annealed for times of up to 1 week to complete interdiffusion. Many of the alloy compositions are pyrophoric. On exposure to air they oxidize with considerable evolution of heat to a mixture of ThO2 and free mercury. It was mandatory that alloy specimens be handled in a "dry box" purged thoroughly with argon. All X-ray diffraction specimens were powdered, screened, and sealed in capillary tubes within the dry box. Experimental Procedures Thermal analysis experiments, useful only in the mercury-rich region of the system, were conducted with the alloys in their original containers. A reentrant thermocouple well formed an integral part of the bulb. These bulbs were heated in a silicone oil bath and cooled in a dry ice-acetone mixture. The rates of heating and cooling were slowed by immersing the specimen bulb in a larger tube containing silicone oil. This provided a suitable thermal lag. In all tests, pure mercury was run as a basic standard. While the invariant reaction at about the melting point of mercury was detected by thermal analysis, the heat effect at the liquidus was not sufficient to produce an inflection in the cooling curve. It was necessary to determine the liquidus temperatures at the mercury-rich end of the system by "breaks" in electrical reslstivity versus temperature curves for individual alloys. MORE than 70 igneous pipes and dikes are known to occur in Cambrian sediments throughout an approximately circular area of about 75 sq miles in southwestern Ste. Genevieve County and southeastern St. Francois County, Mo., across the southern portion of the Farmington anticline, which is outlined in fig. 1. From evidence obtained from fossil fragments taken from some of the intrusive, and from the similarity in composition of the more basic intrusives to those of known age in surrounding states, these pipes and dikes are believed to be at least post-Devonian and probably Cretaceous in age. As first postulated by Rust, these intrusives are believed to represent explosion tubes, or diatremes, punched through great thicknesses of solid rock by gaseous pressure. The particular intrusive studied is located about 1 mile north of the small town of Avon at an elevation of 880 ft in the EM SES NE% of sec. 2, T. 35N, R. 7E. Outcrop is through the Bonneterre dolomite in two separated exposures. The larger outcrop extends east and west for about 50 ft along a tributary in a small ravine (fig. 2). The smaller exposure occurs as a few scattered patches over an area 20 ft square about 100 ft to the north. The area between the exposures is covered, but scattered patches of the Bonneterre dolomite outcrop throughout the area surrounding the diatreme. Where exposed, contact relations show the surrounding dolomite to be shattered and metamor- phosed to a fine-grained rock for a distance of 15 to 20 ft from the intrusive. The igneous rock occurs as a dark greenish-gray porphyry near the center of the diatreme and as a fine-grained, greenish-gray material containing lapilli and metamorphosed fragments of dolomite near the contact with the country rock. The most abundant original mineral of the porphyritic rock is olivine now largely serpentinized as the result of extensive hydrothermal alteration at time of emplacement. The most common constituent of the fine-grained rock, which occurs near the border of the intrusive, is calcite. Mica is a common constituent of both types of rock, occurring as tufts or

An open pit rock structure usually contains geological planes of weakness. They are formed by joints, faults, bedding planes, fractures, and cleavages. Rock slope failures often occur in the form of sliding of rock blocks along a plane or several planes. Such a rock block has three- dimensional geometry, and consequently a vector method of analysis has been found useful in evaluating its stability. Rock blocks of a tetrahedral shape with one free surface have been analyzed by Londe. Rock blocks formed by sets of parallel joints have been analyzed by Wittke. The present chapter presents the analysis of rock blocks formed by planes of weakness of arbitrary orientation, and of three-dimensional geometry.

Since March. 1945, the Magnolia Petroleum CO. has drilled 39 wells in Southwest Coastal Louisiana. All wells were drilled within a comparatively small radius, but the area provides a large variety of problems. The deepest well drilled was 13,518 ft, and the total depth averaged 10,977 ft. Throughout this period drilling mud control and types of mud handled were: (I) phosphate, (2) red lime (late conversion), (3) red lime starch (early conversion), (4) red lime starch oil emulsion, (5) precision controlled low alkalinity-low lime content. and (6) gel muds for completion purposes. Improvement has been obtained in effecting some or all of the following: (I) more rapid penetration, (2) reduction in drilling hazards, (3) better evaluation of cores and logs, and (4) better completions. The geological sequence of zones penetrated range from recent sediments at the grass roots through the Frio section. Anticipation of high-pressure zones and incompetent formations entails precision control of drilling mud weights, and the unconsolidated nature of the various zones requires constant attention to the filtrate, viscosity, and gel strength values. In the Chalkley field, particularly, this combination of problems exists, where the formation pressures and overburden weight density values are in very close proximity. Design of casing and drilling mud programs must be modified to fit each well. INTRODUCTION Field and research work on drilling fluids has made constant progress, enabling operators to prospect progressively deeper horizons. Numerous papers have been written on the theoretical aspects of drilling fluid devel- opment, but in the field engineers have found it difficult to evaluate the role of specific mud constitutents when dealing in terms of thousand barrel mud systems. For that reason field data is somewhat lagging in technical report writing. However, applications of new techniques in the field have usually paralleled, and in numerous instances preceded, research work. The information obtained by Magnolia Petroleum Co. in the course of drilling 39 wells within a comparatively small area in Southwest Coastal Louisiana provides an excellent opportunity of reviewing a specific example of drilling mud evolution. A large variety of problems has been coped with, the most important result being that every well was successfully drilled to its projected total depth. The discussion begins with the advent of deep drilling in this area in March, 1945, and is concluded with a resume of recent drilling operations in the Chalkley field. The primary purpose of this paper is to describe the evolution in types of drilling fluids as it occurred and its application in the solution of various drilling problems. All of this information and experience resulted in the successful drilling of the three wells in the Chalkley field, where a combination of the most sound techniques was necessary in carrying drilling operations to the projected total depths. Other operators along with service company engineers have contributed considerably through the interchange of ideas and information to this paper, but the data and conclusions which are contained are based on first-hand observation of Magnolia Petroleum Company's drilling operations. The 39 wells drilled by Magnolia Petroleum Co. average in depth 10,977 ft per well, while the maximum depth penetrated was 13,518 ft. The cost of drilling fluids have varied from $8,700 to $165,000, with the over-all drilling costs ranging from $74,000 to $543,000 per well. THE perfluoro acids and derivatives show unusual surface-active properties that qualify them as possible flotation reagents. They lower the surface tension of water from 15 to 20 dynes below that obtainable with the corresponding hydrocarbon compounds.1, 2 Fluorochemicals adsorb very strongly on solid surfaces to give films that exhibit larger contact angles than films of the corresponding hydrocarbons."' * The large contact angles probably result from the terminal —CF3 group. The perfluoro acids are made by electrolysis of the corresponding carboxylic acid in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.5 From the perfluoro acids many derivatives may be obtained, such as amides, amines, alcohols, xanthates, ethers and esters and others. Since the fluorinated analogues of the conventional hydrocarbon flotation collectors possess enhanced surface properties, a few were selected for testing. Because a survey of all possible minerals and reagent combinations would be out of the question, hematite was chosen to represent a nonsulphide system and pyrite to represent a sulphide system. The fluorinated reagents used in these experiments were prepared in the research laboratories of Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Some were synthesized especially for this research. They are not available cokmercially. Separation of Nonsulphide Ores: The separation of oxides from silica has always been a challenge to the flotation industry because differences in surface properties of the minerals are normally insufficient to produce clean concentrates. Oleic acid," rosin acids,' and amine salts% ave been used to considerable extent to effect separation of metal oxides and silica. The system hematite-silica was chosen to represent the nonsulphides both because of its difficulty of separation and because large tonnages of easily obtainable material are available, such as gravity concentration tailings and nonmagnetic taconites on the Mesabi Range. The wash-ore tailings used here contained approximately 35 pct iron after desliming. Samples of the material used in this work were part of the same lot used by Chang, Cooke, and Huch9 and were prepared in an identical manner. Reagents for Nonsulphide Ores: Since one of the purposes of this investigation was to compare hydrocarbons with fluorocarbons, reagents of known behavior such as oleic acid, and the alkali metal salts of certain resin acids (Dresinates), were established as standards. Hydrocarbons and fluorocarbons of comparable chain length and other experimental fluorocarbons were tried as collectors for hematite. A list of the materials used and the concentrations of their stock solutions are given in Table I. Since silica can be selectively floated from hematite by conventional reagents," a few fluorocarbon reagents were also tried for this purpose. Their composition and concentrations are given in Table 11. Most of these reagents served the dual function of collector and frother. In the case of F-11 flotation did not occur but it served as a frother when F-6 was employed as a collector. Reagent grade sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide were used to regulate the pH. Deionized water containing less than 0.1 ppm of salts expressed as NaCl was used for all solutions and flotation tests. The pneumatic flotation cell consisted of a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel with a source of filtered air which could be controlled by a needle valve." A 50-g sample of ore and 250 ml of deionized water were added to the flotation cell and stirred slowly. The reagents were added and the pulp was conditioned before air was admitted to the cell. Approximately 15 ml of the pulp were removed for pH determination before flotation was started and were then returned to the system. The pH was again measured after flotation. Air was admitted to the cell until no further flotation occurred or until the character of the float changed markedly. Both the float and the nonfloat products were filtered, dried, weighed. and assayed for iron. The cell was washed in hot water and rinsed with deionized water after each test. Occasionally the cell was cleaned with concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron oxide particles from the glass frit. It was. designed to serve three purposes: (1) to verify the accuracy of the mine sampling by actually treating substantial tonnages of ore, (2) to demonstrate on a reasonably large scale the percentage of the copper in the ore that could be recovered, and (3) to permit the testing of various kinds of machines and devices for crushing and concentrating the ore, so as to guide the engineers in designing the proposed 6000-ton milling plant at Garfield. As a matter of fact, it contained a lot of second-hand equipment sent by MacNeill and Penrose from the works of the United States Reduction &Refining Co. in Colorado; and it was by no means a model installation. Probably it would have been even less efficient, except for the skillful work of George O. Bradley and-Frank-G, Janney, both of whom had worked with Jackling at Mercur. Bradley was a mechanical engineer employed to design the plant. Later he directed the design of the concentrator at Garfield and remained as consulting mechanical engineer to the company until 1915. Janney, who afterwards became manager of mills, a position that he retained until his death in 1916, was a skilled mechanic at the Golden Gate mill at Mercur when Jackling built the plant in 1897. His flair was making machinery do what it was intended to do. He was not an ore-dressing engineer in a technical sense; but Jackling him- self was a specialist in this respect as well as in designing and construction and Janney's mechanical aptitude made him a particularly valuable man in the Utah organization. NUMEROUS hydride habit planes in zirconium, Zircaloy-2, and Zircaloy-4 have been observed by various researchers and have been compiled by Louthan and Angerman.1 While only partial agreement exists on the identification of these habit planes, there is a growing consensus that a tensile stress applied on a polycrystalline rod during slow cooling will cause the hydride platelets to lie perpendicular to the tensile axis. walters2 agrees with Louthan and Angerman who reason that "The particular plane on which precipitation will occur is the plane that will result in the maximum relief of stress by precipitation of the low-density hydride." The experiment described below was initiated to test this hypothesis on a single crystal of zirconium. A single-crystalline tensile specimen of zone-refined zirconium, designated number 13 in a previous study,3 had a square cross section with one pair of parallel faces only 4 deg from the basal plane of the hcp structure. The tensile axis was about 86 deg from the (0001) pole, 14 deg from the (1010) pole, and 16 deg from the (1150) pole. The specimen was charged to 50 ppm H by allowing reaction with the correct amount of hydrogen at 1073°K, homogenizing at this temperature for 2 hr, and cooling in the furnace. Two- surface analysis revealed that hydride platelets had precipitated parallel to the three {1010} prism planes. The specimen was heated to 673°K, in air, for 16 hr to bring the hydrogen back into solid solution, and furnace-cooled to 573°K.* It was then stressed in ten- sion at 1.2 kg per sq mm. (This produced a resolved shear stress of 0.6 kg per sq mm for glide on the prism plane with the highest Schmid factor. A higher stress would have produced significant strain at this temperature because the critical resolved shear stress for prism-plane glide in this crystal was only 1.0 kg per sq mm at ambient temperature.) The poles of the three prism planes were at angles of 14, 46, and 74 deg to the tensile axis so that an applied stress would exert normal stresses on the three planes in the approximate ratios 10:5:1, respectively. As soon as the stress was applied, the sample was furnace-cooled to room temperature. It was ground on wet Sic paper and chemically polished in 50 parts HNO3, 50 parts water, and 7 parts HF before examination. The result of the experiment was negative; i.e., the three (1010) planes were of equal importance as hydride habit planes.* It must be admitted that the ex- periment is not entirely comparable to those performed by walters,2 Louthan,5 and Louthan and Marshall6 on polycrystalline materials. They have found that some critical stress (below the macroscopic yield stress) is required for stress-orienting the hydrides. The applied stress in the present experiment was, by necessity, smaller by an order of magnitude than the critical stresses they report for the various materials. If the critical stress was related to the microstructure, one might postulate that it should be decreased by increasing the degree of perfection of the metal lattice and by increasing the grain size. But the experiment above suggests that, for the extreme case of a zone-refined single crystal of zirconium, the critical stress lies above that which one can apply without introducing gross plastic strain as another variable.

The displacement of a wetting fluid from a porous medium by a non-wetting fluid (drainage) is now reasonably well understood. A complete explanation has yet to be found for the analogous case of a wetting fluid being spontaneously imbibed and the non-wetting phase displaced (imbibition). During the displacement of oil or gas by water in a water-wet sand, the porous medium ordinarily imbibes water. The amount of oil recovered, the cost of recovery and the production history seem then to be controlled mainly by pore geometry. The influence of pore geometry is reflected in drainage and imbibition capillary-pressure curves and relative permeability curves. Relative permeability curves for a particular consolidated sand show that at any given saturation the permeability to oil during imbibition is smaller than during drainage. ' Low imbibition permeabilities suggest that the non-wetting phase, oil or gas, is gradually trapped by the advancing water. This paper describes a mathematical image (model) of consolidated porous rock based on the concept of the trapping of the non-wetting phase during the imbibition process. The following items have been derived from the model. 1. A direct relation between the relative permeability characteristics during imbibition and those observed during drainage. 2. A theoretical limit for the fractional amount of oil or gas recoverable by imbibition. 3. An expression for the resistivity index which can be used in connection with the formula for wetting-phase relative permeability to check the consistency of the model. 4. The Iimits of flow performance for a given rock dictated by complete wetting by either oil or water. 5. The factors controlling oil recovery by imbibition in the presence of free gas. The complexity of a porous medium is such that drastic simplifications must be introduced to obtain a model amenable to mathematical treatment. Many parameters have been introduced by others in Iprogressing" from the parallel-capillary model to the randomly interconnected capillary models independently proposed by Wyllie and Gardner3 and Marshall4. To these a further complication must be added since an imbibition model must trap part of the non-wetting phase during imbibition of the wetting phase. Like so many of the previously introduced complications, this fluid-block was introduced to make the model performance fit the observed imbibition flow behavior. THE IMBIBITION MODEL ASSUMPTIONS The following assumptions are common to many two-phase models previously described. 1. The wetting characteristics of the medium are clearly defined. 2. When two fluids co-exist in the medium, the wetting phase will fill the smaller pores and the non-wetting fluid the bigger ones. 3. The pores have a circular cross section. 4. Four magnetic fleld balances and several spare magnetic systems were purchased by the Brazilian National Department of Mineral Production from the Askania Werke A. G., of Berlin, in 1932. Preliminary field tests on this new equipment showed one of the vertical component magnetic systems to be defective. A series of measurements designed to investigate the functioning of these instruments, and particularly the defective system, showed it to have an abnormally low magnetic moment, as compared to the satisfactory systems, and a high-temperature correction that was opposite in sign to that which would be expected for a noncompensated magnetic system. Since these systems were of the "temperature compensated" type, this condition indicated an accidental overcompensation. Attempts to correct for this overcompensation by readjustment of the compensating masses on the aluminum and Invar spindles failed because the distance by which the position of the masses could be shifted was insufficient. The temperature effect was reduced by this readjustment but was not entirely eliminated, as was to be desired. Theoretical deductions indicated that the defective condition of the system could be explained as due to three possible causes: (1) considerable loss of magnetic moment of the system; (2) increase in the magnetic temperature coefficient of the laminas; (3) dislocation of the component parts of the system caused by a shock experienced after it left the factory and before it was tested in Brazil. Later information received from the factory after examination of the returned system indicated that the third cause probably played the most important role. Temperature calibrations of the defective system for various positions of the counterweights brought out an important point, which it is believed
