The Quebrada Blanca copper/molybdenum prospect lies on a dissected plateau in the high Andes of Northern Chile. The Superior Oil-Falconbridge Group began exploration of the Property in 1977 under a joint venture foreign investment agreement with the Chilean government. Quebrada Blanca is a relatively high grade secondarily enriched porphry copper deposit. Primary mineralization occurred 38 million years ago and accompanied quartz monzonite intrusive. Early disseminated Primary mineralization was followed by hydrothermal mineralization, mineralized breccia, and post-mineral faulting. After supergene enrichment Quebrada Blanca was buried under late Tertiary gravels and then partially re-exposed in Quaternary time. During the past five years, a successful exploration program has developed an open-pit mining reserve, provided samples for bulk metallurgical testing, and located more than adequate supplies of water for future operations. The main orebody is amenable to conventional metallurgical treatment and contains more than 400 Mt (441 million st) of recoverable open-pit ore at about a 1:1 overall stripping ratio. The average millhead grade during the first six years of operations will exceed 1.5% Cu, plus recoverable molybdenum values. Several hundred million tons of additional reserves are available in the surrounding districts

This paper addresses a process by which both the disposal and utilization of preparation plant coal refuse can be simultaneously accomplished with an attendant benefit of significantly increasing the percentage of extractable coal. A laboratory study is described in which coal refuse was successfully utilized as an aggregate in low cost concrete (coal-crete) mixes under simulated mine environments. Coal-crete specimens with compressive strengths of 14 000 kPa (2000 psi) were consistently produced. A construction sequence and mining plans are offered for placing the low-cost coal-crete pillars in accessible areas in room and-pillar mines so that a substantial portion of the remaining coal pillars could be extracted. The method could be applicable in areas where mining procedures do not permit pillar extraction became of possible surface subsidence, roof problems, or other conditions. Possible structural difficulties with the coal- crete pillar support system are discussed. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, the economic feasibility of mining with the coal-crete pillar system is investigated. The cost of the system is compared to the cost of a mining system which would have less coal recovery. The analysis indicates that although at higher coal selling prices the coal-crete mining system may yield an acceptable rate of return, the alternative of leaving the coal pillars is more attractive at the present time.

The emergence of the dragline as the dominant stripping tool is described and reasons for this are noted. Brief comparisons are made with stripping shovels and wheel excavators. Representative output and machine availability figures for draglines are presented. The effect of changes in machine parameters such as boom length, swing power, and hoist power on machine productivity are discussed. An analysis of machine availability and the causes of machine downtime is made. Measures which are being taken to improve machine availability are discussed in detail. These include (1) improved methods of structural analysis, standardization of welded joints and welding methods to increase structural reliability and to develop more efficient structural designs, (2) standardization of gearing and mechanical componentry to permit the use of proven designs, (3) review of fairlead design and bucket hardware to improve rope life and reduce downtime, and (4) modifications to reduce maintenance time. The General Electric Data Logging system is described and consideration given to its use as a tool for improving productivity. Areas for future improvements in productivity are discussed.

Results of correlations between strength-development and sintering shrinkage occurring during induration are presented. A mathematical treatment of the shrinkage kinetics is, next, given and is based on the use of semi-empirical equations. The discussion stresses the significance of kinetic constants and activation energies in the assessment of iron ore concentrates for pelletizing and induration. Next, starting with the assumption that there is a need for parameters to characterize the iron-ore concentrates and relate these parameters to shrinkage-kinetic constants and balling behaviour, results of compaction measurements and pore structure characterization (mercury porosimetry) are presented and discussed.

IT is common knowledge that the iron orebodies of the Mesabi range lie nearly horizontal and are of trough or blanket-like types. These orebodies are from a few feet to several hundred feet thick and vary from a few acres in extent to the size of the largest one, at Hibbing, Minn., which is over 1 mile wide and 3 miles long. They are covered with sand, boulder and clay overburden and occasionally, shallow depths of ledge material, varying in total depth from about 20 to 200 ft. Large areas are not capped with overlying ledge material; the top of the ore lies directly underneath the surface material. Because of the comparatively great tonnage of ore, open-pit mining has made tremendous strides since the first open-pit ore was shipped from this range by the Merritt brothers, from the Mountain iron mine in October, 1892, and along with the great development of open-pit mining on the Mesabi range has gone a tremendous change in the character of equipment used.

In 1942, Illinois produced 106,590,000 bbl. of crude oil, or 7.6 per cent of the entire amount produced in the United States. It ranked fifth among the oil- producing states. The production for 1942 declined 20.5 per cent from the previous year's total of 134,139,000 bbl. Tie daily average production for 1942 was approximately 292,000 bbl., or 74,000 bbl; less than the 366,000 daily average for 1941. At the beginning of 1942 the daily production was 367,000 bbl. This production declined steadily to 282,000 for June and to 246,000 for December. This steady decline was caused partly by the reduction in drilling resulting from Federal Conservation Order M-68 and partly by the fact that no major pool was found during the year. Discoveries Forty new fields (Fig. 2, Table 2), 48 extensions (Table 3), and 45 additional producing zones in existing fields (Table 4) Were discovered in 23 counties in Illinois during 1942. Chromite, the only ore of chromium, occurs almost exclusively in mafic-ultramafic rocks and their weathering products. However, not all kinds of mafic-ultramafic rocks are favorable hosts for possible low-grade chromite deposits. For instance, chromium-bearing basalts are not favorable because they commonly contain <0.3% Cr203, and chromite is almost always less than 50 mp in diameter, if it is present at all. Chromite-bearing ultramafic rocks in stratiform and alpine complexes tend to be either ore grade (>25% chromite) or very low grade (<2% chromite); intermediate rocks are scarce. In most complexes, large tonnages exist only in the <2% chromite rocks and the composition of the chromite in those rocks may be unsuitable for metallurgical use. Some nickel laterite districts contain more than lo8 tons of material with 2.0 to 5.5% Cr203, and hence, chromium could be a byproduct of nickel in some laterite districts. In addition, some chromiferous sand placers may contain tens to hundreds of millions of tons of material between 2 and 5% Cr203

Belt scales are frequently used in the mining industry because of the ability to handle large tonnages without interrupting the material flow, fitting easily into all types of bulk handling systems and being relatively inexpensive. Although manufacturers claim weighing accuracies better than Y2%, many operators experience, in practice, much larger errors and they have become apprehensive about the use of belt scales. However, in spite of these disappointing instances, a belt scale is one of the most valuable tools for process and inventory control. Since it is a measuring device, care should be given to the design and installation of belt scales. The basic components of a belt scale are: (1) conveyor belt, (2) scale suspension, (3) sensing device, (4) integrating and recording. The first component of this system is of great importance to the overall accuracy and has been thoroughly discussed in earlier papers. This paper will review primarily the various scale hardware designs currently available, and will be confined to the last three components of the system.

With only six small spodumene prospect pits, no detailed mapping, and no subsurface information in 1938, the Carolina lithium-pegmatite area now contains four mines among more than 25 properties on which exploratory work has been done. Even the open pit mine of Foote Mineral Co. described herein, from which ten million tons of ore and waste have been removed since 1952, was virgin ground when mapped in 1938-40 1. It has been a privilege to participate in the transition. In 1940, the spodumene pegmatites were known in a 25-mile belt (originally noted for tin prospecting) between Lincolnton, N. C. and Grover at the South Carolina line. Subsequently, Broadhurst 2 reported relatively small bodies northeast of Lincolnton near the Catawba County line. To the south, diamond drilling done in 1953 on the old Ross tin-mine property near Gaffney yielded pegmatite cores containing a few crystals of spodumene. This fact, not previously reported, suggests that some of the pyroxene in the Ross shaft as described by Sloan 3 may be spodumene.

The sample under investigation contained approximately 16% BaSO, and was 80% -325 mesh. Established methods for floating barite did not produce concentrates of satisfactory grade or barite recovery because of low barite content and the presence of 6% calcite in the feed. By using a new long-chain sulfosuccinamate collector in combination with relatively high concentrations of sodium silicate, a barite concentrate was produced that would be acceptable as an oil-drilling mud using a simple rougher-cleaner circuit. No desliming of the fine-ground feed was necessary. Barite recovery was over 80% and the concentrate produced had a specific gravity higher than 4.3. During the course of the investigation, a procedure was developed to obtain semiquantitative determinations of barite, calcite, quartz, and feldspar in test samples using an infrared spectrophotometer. Samples were also analyzed in a thermobalance for determination of the calcite content. The use of these instruments made it possible to obtain quick mineralogical assays and proved to be of invaluable assistance in guiding the flotation testing.

THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. &apos;The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

Feldspar has been separated from silica by cationic collector using hydrofluoric acid as an activator of feldspar (1,2). Recently, one of the authors developed a new flotation process separating feldspar from quartz without using hydrofluoric acid. Presently, some silica sand mills are operating to introduce this process in Japan (3). In this flotation, feldspar is floated from silica using normal alkyltri-methylene diamine acetate together with sodium petroleum sulfonate as collectors in a hydrochloric or sulfuric acid circuit of about pH 2. From fundamental studies, it was found that, though the aliphatic diamine by itself did not adsorb on feldspar sufficiently to give a satisfying flotation in acidic circuit., the adsorption of collector was promoted by the simultaneous use of petroleum sulfonate and resulted in sufficient flotation of feldspar. On the other hand, quartz did not float in this flotation process. The application of this flotation was attempted for some types of natural samples and satisfying results were obtained. Further, an example of practical plant was introduced and the advantages in the process are emphasized.

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program designed for, and implemented at. longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam, and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 4N had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft), [Fig. 1]. The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) although it ranges from 73-134 m (240-440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by 116 Hemscheidt 320 HSL shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

Two series of 17pct Cr iron-base alloys with small, controlled amounts of carbon and nitrogen were vacuum-melted in an effort to detertmine the meclz-uniswls of inter granulur corrosion in ferritic stain-less steels. An alloy containing 0.0095 pct N aid 0.002 pct C was very resistant to intergranular corrosion, even after sensitizing heat treatments at 1700" to 2100o F. However, alloys containing more than 0.022 pct Ni and more than 0.012 pct C were quite susceptible to intergranular corrosion after sensitizing heat treatments at temperatures higher than 1700°F. This corrosion was observed after the usual exposure tests and after potentiostatic polarization tests. Electronmicroscopic examination of the alloys susceptible to intergranular corvosion revealed a small grain boundary precipitate; this precipitate was absent in the alloys not susceptible to such corrosion. Thc electronmicrographs indicate that intergranu1ar corrosion of ferritic stainless steels is caused by the depletion of chromium in areas adjacent to precipi-tates of chromium carbide or chromium nitride. It also seems likely that the precipitates themselves are attacked at highly oxidizing potentials. Confirma-tion of the proposed mechanisms was obtained in tests on air-melted ferritic stainless steels containing titanium. The titanium additions greatly reduced susceptibility to intergranular corrosion at moderately oxidizing potentials but had no beneficial effect at highly oxidizing potentials. A major obstacle to the use of ferritic stainless steel has been their susceptibility to intergranular corrosion after welding or improper heat treatment. It appears that sensitization of ferritic stainless steel occurs under a wider range of conditions than for austenitic steels. In addition, a greater number of environments lead to damaging intergranular corrosion of sensitized ferritic stainless steels than to sensitized austenitic steels. The chromium depletion theory of intergranular corrosion is widely accepted for austenitic stainless steels&apos;" although there: are some objections.3 On the other hand, several alternative mechanisms proposed for ferritic stainless steels include precipitation of easily corroded iron carbides at grain boundaries,&apos; grain boundary precipitates that strain the metal lat-tice,5 and the formation of austenite at the grain bound-arie.6 The application of the chromium depletion theory to ferritic stainless steels has been discussed extensively by Baumel.7 The present investigation was undertaken to determine which of the proposed mechanisms can be sub- A PAUL BOND IS Research Group Leader, Climax Molybdenum Co of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. stantiated with experimental data obtained on ferritic stainless steels. High-purity 17 pct Cr alloys containing small controlled additions of carbon or nitrogen were therefore prepared, and then examined electro-chemically and metallographically. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Two series of experimental alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron and low-carbon ferro-chromium using the split-heat technique. In this technique, the base composition is melted, and part of the melt is poured off to produce an ingot. To the balance of the melt, the required addition is made and the next ingot cast. This process is repeated until a series of the desired compositions is cast. By this procedure the impurity levels are essentially constant within each series. All the alloys in the carbon-containing series were melted and cast in vacuum. The base composition in the nitrogen series was melted and cast in vacuum; subsequent ingots in the series were melted with additions of high-nitrogen ferrochromium, and cast under argon at a pressure of 0.5 atmosphere. Two additional alloys were produced starting with normal purity materials. They were induction-melted while protected by an argon blanket and cast in air. Table I gives the composition of the alloys. The 2-in.-diam ingots produced were hot-forged and hot-rolled to a thickness of 0.3 in. and then cold-rolled to 0.15 in. All specimens were annealed at 1450°F for 1 hr. The indicated sensitizing heat treat-s s ments were performed on annealed material. All heat treatments were followed by a water quench. Specimen Preparation. For the 65 pct nitric acid test, 1 by 2 by 0.14-in. specimens were wet-surface ground to remove surface irregularities and polished through 3/0 dry metallographic paper. For the modified Strauss test, $ by 3 by 0.14-in. specinlens were similarly prepared. Immediately prior to testing, the Table I.
