The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Limited, is in the town of Asbestos, situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Montreal and about the same distance southwest of Quebec, in Richmond County, Quebec. Mining operations were started in 1881 on outcrops on a hill, as a side-hill cut, followed by a second and third cut. This development was the forerunner of the present large open-pit operations, the mine now ranking as the largest open-pit asbestos mine in the world. Operations were first carried on by hand, then by horsepower and later by stem cableways. By 1924 the derrick spans, 2000 ft. or more long, became unwieldy. To overcome this, and also to eliminate hand labor as much as possible, steam shovels and railroad haulage were introduced. The steam shovels were replaced in 1928 by larger electric shovels of the full-revolving type. The Ore Body The ore body is a serpentinized peri-dotite rock mass. The chrysotile fibers form a network of veins throughout, varying from microscopic width to two or more inches measured across the veins (Fig. I). These veins may be continuous for a few or many feet; they may increase or decrease in width within a few feet. The veins in which the fibers occur per- pendicular to the veins are known as cross fiber. Those in which the fibers lay parallel to the veins are known as slip fiber. It is common practice, and certainly good business as all of us know, to take care of plant operating equipment. Machinery of any type requires periodic inspection and planned maintenance. With this thought in mind a plant operator should at the end of every shutdown period make regular belt inspections and plan for later appropriate care and maintenance. The points mentioned below are understood well by all of us but are sometimes forgotten because belt conveyors are comparatively easy to operate. Maintenance of any conveyor belt is dependent upon the fundamental characteristics of the two component parts-cover and carcass.

THE desulphurizing of pig iron has been accomplished with a number of different additions. The oldest and still most commonly used agent is soda, the extensive use of which commenced about 1925, when it was used principally for cupola furnace iron. More recent experience' seems to show that better results can be obtained with sodium hydroxide. The well-known desulphurizing properties of lime have also been exploited in different technical processes. Another material with even more powerful effect is calcium carbide.' The desulphurizing ability of manganese, when added to the ladle in sufficient quantity, should also be mentioned in this connection. During recent years increasing attention has been paid to the desulphurizing properties of metallic magnesium." An addition of a suitable alloy of magnesium is now in use purely for the purpose of sulphur elimination. Of the desulphurizing agents mentioned, lime is by far the cheapest, provided that the reaction can be brought about rapidly and completely. Therefore, a method that makes full use of the desulphurizing ability of lime may be able to compete with other processes. A method developed at the Dom-narfvet Iron and Steel Works (Sweden) will be described, which enables pig iron to be rapidly desulphurized to very low sulphur contents by using a burnt lime powder. as the desulphurizing agent. Lime in Older Processes In cases where lime has been used for the desul-phurization of pig iron, it has generally not been used alone, but mixed with other substances such as fluorspar, to obtain the formation of a molten slag during the process. This method has been tried by Tigerschiold,' who treated the iron with a lime-fluorspar mixture, the stirring of the iron being brought about inductively with low frequency alternating current. Very good results were obtained. A process of this type has also been suggested by R. P. Heuer, U. S. A. The principles of this method, which has been tested in Great Britain by Newell. Lanener. and Parsons." re that a mixture of lime and fluoispar is added to the hot metal in the ladle, while a powerful stream of nitrogen gas is blown into the bath to produce the required intermixing. The results of the tests were unsatisfactory, however. A similar process has been developed at The Steel Co. of Canada, according to a statement by H. M. Griffith.' Here the tests were carried out in a carbon-lined ladle provided with carbon tuyeres in the side wall for blowing nitrogen into the bath. The addition consisted of about 20 lb of a mixture of burnt lime and fluorspar per ton of pig iron. Good results appear to have been achieved. The sulphur content of the pig iron is stated to have been reduced from 0.025 to 0.050 pct down to 0.006 pct. Various methods of desulphurizing pig iron have been tried using lime powder without fluxing material for fusing. Eichholz and Behrendt7 have experimented with blowing a powdered limeicoke mixture with air into the ladle. Their results were, however, not conclusive and the experiments do not appear to have been continued. Similar experiments have been carried out at Domnarfvet, using nitrogen instead of air in order to avoid oxidation. But these attempts were not particularly successful. It appears to be difficult to achieve the required agitation by this means. The strong cooling effect of the gas on the iron is also a serious drawback. A method in many respects similar to that tried at Domnarfvet was tried by Eulenberg and Krus at the end of the 1930's. Here again desulphurization was carried out with lime alone, brought into contact with the molten iron in a rotary furnace. The temperature was kept at the required level, 1400" to 1500°C, by the introduction of a pulverized coal burner in one end of the furnace. The speed of rotating was not given. A paper by Bading and Krus states that, in one of the first experiments, the sulphur content in 56 tons of pig iron was brought down from 0.186 to 0.035 pct in 117 min, but that a considerable shortening of the time would be possible. According to later reports by Eichholz and Behrendt,' it should be possible by this process to achieve a desulphurization speed of 0.35 pct S per hr for a consumption of 6 to 10 pct limestone and 2 to 3 pct coke, as fuel exclusively. The final sulphur content is, however, not stated. Domnarfvet Method After a number of different procedures had been investigated, the tests at Domnarfvet were directed to desulphurization with lime in a rotary furnace. Before going into the practical details of the method, the theoretical aspects will be discussed briefly. If the pig iron does not contain alloying elements other than carbon, the reaction can be expressed most simply by the usual equation: FeS + CaO + C = Fe + CaS + CO [I] 4H,. ~ 34,000 cal That this reaction can be carried through to a very complete desulphurization of pig iron has been shown by OelsenD in a discussion in connection with the Eulenberg and Krus' method. He mentions two laboratory tests, in one of which the sulphur content in the pig iron at 1400°C was reduced from 0.540 to 0.006 pct after treating with 3.35 pct lime. The pig iron had a low manganese content, but other analysis is th. given. Mention also should be made of the recently published investigations by Fischer and Cohnen'" dealing with the influence of the carbon content of the iron on desulphurization with lime, although in this case fluorspar was added also. The tests show that efficient desulphurization is possible with lime in the steel bath, provided that the carbon content is sufficiently high. The temperature employed in these tests was considerably higher (1620") than that normal for treatment of pig iron. The author concludes that the product S% X C% - 0.011 at the temperature in question.

AT temperatures between 1095' and 1347ºC, 13 runs have been made on the diffusion of silicon in iron. In two of the runs the couple compositions were entirely within the loop of the Fe-Si system; the base alloys contained 0.0 and 1.0 wt pct Si. The other runs in which the couples consisted of a 2.3 wt pct Si alloy welded to a 3.7 pct Si alloy were a phase throughout. The alloys were made by melting electrolytic iron and commercially pure silicon. Trace impurities were not determined. The butt welded couples were diffused in an inert atmosphere of argon or hydrogen. After cooling, cuts of two mils or greater thickness were machined parallel to the weld interface. The chips were analyzed for silicon. When the concentration and distance data were examined on the conventional probability plot,' no marked variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration was indicated over the narrow composition ranges employed. Therefore, a single diffusion coefficient is recorded for each run in Table I. The temperatures and atmospheres of the diffusion anneal are listed along with the compositions of the base alloys. For a iron the silicon diffusion coefficient is given by the equation: D = 0.44 e-48,000/RT where R is the gas Constant and T, the absolute temperature. However, since the scatter in the data is fairly large, the activation energy may be in error by as much as 6000 cal per g-atom. The two ? iron points do not permit estimation of the activation energy with any reasonable certainty. They do indicate that the coefficients reported by Smithells2 and Jost,3 based on the work of Fry,4 are much too high. Although very dilute solutions in iron of manganese,5 nickel,8 cobalt,7 and molybdenum8 give dif- fusion coefficients quite close to those obtained for self-diffusion in iron, the silicon values are considerably higher, though of the same order of magnitude. This seems to be consistent with the fact that the silicon atom is the only one of those listed here which is appreciably smaller than iron. With such matters I was occupied in the second book; now I come to the third book, which is about veins and stringers, and the seams in the rocks1. The term "vein" is sometimes used to indicate canales in the earth, but very often elsewhere by this name I have described that which may be put in vessels2; I now attach a second significance to these words, for by them I mean to designate any mineral substances which the earth keeps hidden within her own deep receptacles.

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., located in the Globe-Miami district at Inspiration, Ariz., became a producer of copper in 1915. From 1915 until 1948, 116,278,000 tons of ore were produced from underground workings by the block-caving system of mining. In April 1948, open-pit ore production from portions of the ore body was started and earlier plans for block-caving in these areas were abandoned. The change was due to economic conditions.

As reported in a previous publication,1 isothermal grain growth in high purity aluminum and in an aluminum alloy with 2 pct magnesium can be adequately described by means of the empirical relation: [ ] or in some cases, by the simpler relation, [ ] Here, D is the average grain size after an annealing period t. The annealing period includes the time for complete recrystallization R, and the time for grain growth [to]. DA is the grain size as recrystallized, n is a parameter depending on the temperature and on the material. The effect of 2 pct magnesium in solid solution was to decrease D, and to increase R, A and n at a given temperature. The present work was undertaken in order to investigate the above listed effects of magnesium in solid solution, as functions of the magnesium content. The work also includes the study of certain anomalous effects observed in the recrystallization and grain growth of the 2 pct magnesium alloy at 350°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The method of producing the ingots used in this work was described in detail1 and need not be reproduced here. The materials used were high purity aluminum, furnished by the Aluminum Co. of America, of lot analysis shown in Table I and magnesium from a high purity distilled stock of magnesium crystals. [ ] Ingots were prepared for a series of binary aluminum-magnesium alloys of increasing alloy content. The numbers used to designate these ingots and their magnesium contents by chemical analysis are given in Table 2. [ ] The analyses showed no difference in composition between the top and the bottom of the ingots. Spectrographic analysis of the ingots for elements other than magnesium showed, within the limits of accuracy of the method, no increase in impurities over the amounts given in the lot analysis for the high purity aluminum in Table I. THIS paper describes experiments in which eight test samples of gelatin dynamite were fired in three different types of apparatus and the quantity and composition of the gaseous products of detonation determined. The special dynamites were so prepared that the oxygen balance of the samples varied from -35.0 to +6.0 g. per 100 g. of explosive, including the wrapper. By means of this graded series of explosives, the relation between oxygen balance and gaseous products of detonation could be studied explicitly. The effect of varying oxygen balance on explosive strength has been discussed in another paper.1 The apparatus employed in the work described in the present paper included (1) the Bichel gage, a steel bomb of 15-1. volume; (2) the Crawshaw-Jones confined detonation apparatus, a steel cannon from which the explosive is fired into a pipe of 90-1. volume; and (3) the Hercules tank, an apparatus in which the explosive is confined in a quartz block which is placed in a steel tank of about 4500-1. volume. A full description of the apparatus is given later. VARIABLES AFFECTING COMPOSITION OF DETONATION PRODUCTS The character of the detonation products of commercial explosives is governed in part by the same factors that affect the combustion products from explosive mixtures of air with gases or vapors. In either case, combustible materials-namely, carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes sulfur-are present and combined variously. In an exploding gas mixture the combustibles are oxidized by oxygen in the admixed air, whereas with explosives the necessary oxygen is provided by oxygen-carrying materials in the explosive ingredients.

The Ozark Lead Company operating facilities are located in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" of southeast Missouri. Development of this wholly owned subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation started in May 1964, with a six foot diameter by 1250 foot deep steel lined shaft. A 20-foot diameter, 1480 foot deep, concrete lined production shaft was collared in March 1968. Production from the facilities began that month and has reached a present average of approximately 6000 tons per day. This paper describes the fully automatic system used to hoist the lead-zinc ore from a depth of 1420 feet to the surface crushing and concentrating facilities, as well as the man and materials hoisting system which allows the lowering of large equipment into the mine. MINING Galena, sphalerite and some copper minerals are found in several mineralized zones of the relatively flat lying dolomite of the "Bonneterre formation". The mineable ore zones vary from 10 feet to 110 feet thick, from 200 feet to 1200 feet wide, and several thousands of feet on strike. Two-boom diesel-hydraulic jumbos equipped with rotary percussion drills are used for both development and production. The jumbos are used principally to open the room and pillar stopes, and a track mounted down hole drill is used to bench in areas where the ore thickness warrants. Explosives used are ANFO, dynamite, and water-jell which are detonated by electric blasting caps. Broken ore (and waste) is hauled by rubber tired transports to chuted transfer raises. Approximately every 500 feet, these raises connect the orebody to the 15 foot by 28 foot train haulage level below. Two twenty ton diesel-hydraulic locomotives haul 160 tons per trip to storage pockets which have a total storage of 1500 tons of material. From these pockets the material is fed over a 6 foot by 20 foot mechanical vibrating feeder which includes one 4 foot by 6 foot grizzly section to a 48 inch by 60 inch jaw crusher. The grizzly and crusher products are transferred horizontally 45 feet on a 48 inch conveyor belt, to one of two 750 ton storage pockets. The material can flow unimpeded into one pocket or be deflected into the second pocket by a movable rock filled hopper. LOADING POCKET The material in each storage pocket is controlled by six lengths of ship anchor chain. The upper end of the 20 foot chain is anchored behind a brow in the pocket, while the lower ends are joined by a header. The lower ends of the chains are raised by two electric powered marine barge winches using 3/4 inch cables. The crusher operator controls the raising and lowering of these chains from a console in the crusher station. The upper and lower travel of the chains is controlled by cams and limit switches on the winch drive. The winches are located within 5 feet of the shaft, and shaft water continually causes problems with the electric components. A malfunction in the upper travel switch will cause the winch to pull the chains into the cable sheave (breaking the cable or sheave), while the lower switch causes the winch to unwind too much rope. Serious consideration is being given to changing the electric motors to pneumatic, since pneumatic motors will eliminate the need of any electrics at the winches. The winches can be "bottomed out" against the sheave without damage to the cable or sheave when raising the chains, and can be allowed to "free wheel" to lower the chains. Tile sharp-yield point found in magnesium crystals in the solulion-treated and aged condition is studied by dislocation internal-friction experiments. The results show that the sharp yield is not file to the sudden release of pinned dislocations hut is movc likely due to the rapid multiplication of an initially small number of dislocations. Recovery or the dislocation internal friction after deformation is also studied. This yecovery results from the re-pinning of dislocations by a solute, presumably nitrogen, which moves with a relatively small activation energy. SHARP-yield points, when they occur, are a striking feature of the stress-strain curve generated during a tensile test. Although commonly associated with steel, sharp yielding has been found in a variety of metallic and nonmetallic crystalline materials. In particular, sharp-yield points have been found in zinc"' and cadmium3 containing nitrogen. With this background, Geiselman and Guy4 investigated the tensile properties of magnesium single crystals containing nitrogen to see if sharp yielding also occurs in this system. They found that sharp yields did indeed occur in solution-treated and aged specimens tested at elevated temperature but were not able to give conclusive proof that the sharp yield was caused by nitrogen, a yield drop being observed even in their purest crystals. Sharp-yield points have also been found in various polycrystalline magnesium alloys.7'8 In the study of the sharp-yield phenomenon it is desired to observe the behavior of dislocations in the earliest stages of the deformation process. Internal-friction experiments are useful for this purpose because dislocation damping is sensitive to the mobility of free-dislocation segments. At low strain amplitudes the damping, A, due to the the forced vibration of dislocation segments of average length L is ? =KAL4 [1] where A is the dislocation density and K, if the applied frequency is well below the resonant frequency of the dislocation segments? is a constant for the sample under observation.5 Dislocation damping, because of the fourth-power dependence on L, is particularly sensitive to the creation of free-dislocation segments during deformation. Since sharp yielding is associated with the sudden release of pinned-dislocation segments, marked changes in the dislocation damping are expected at the yield point.6 The use of the dislocation-damping observations to help elucidate the incompletely understood mechanism of yielding in magnesium is the primary objective of the experiments reported here. PROCEDURE Many investigations have shown that very marked and rapid changes occur in the dislocation damping of of a deformed material as soon as the straining is stopped.5 It was quite essential, then, for the purpose of this investigation, to make the damping measurements during the deformation of the samples. This can only be accomplished through the use of the ultrasonic-pulse method. In this method traveling sound-wave pulses are used and, in contrast to resonating-bar methods, only the sample ends are set in vibration. Thus, the sample can be gripped along its sides in the tensile-test machine without disturbing the damping measurements. In the pulse method, the decrease in the amplitude of a sound pulse is measured as it travels back and forth through the sample. If A is the amplitude after traversing a distance x and A. is the initial amplitude, A=Aoe-ax [2] and a is called the attenuation. It is commonly measured either in units of cm-I or as db per µ sec. The observed attenuation in a metal sample is due to a number of causes. These include scattering by grain boundaries and impurity particles, thermo-elastic damping, diffraction effects, stress-induced ordering of solute atoms, and dislocation damping. The total observed attenuation in a given sample usually cannot be resolved into these various components, but changes in a due solely to changes in dislocation damping can be accurately determined, provided the experiment is arranged so that all other sources of damping are held constant. It is desired to reduce the extraneous sources of attenuation to a minimum and for this reason the experiments are done on single crystals of high purity. Magnesium crystals offer the further advantage that, when properly oriented, only a single set of slip planes is active during deformation. Crystal Preparation. The method of sample preparation is similar to that of Geiselman and Guy.4 The starting material was high-purity, sublimed magnesium rod supplied by the Dow Chemical Co. Mining operations of the Charcas unit at present are limited to the Tiro General mine at Charcas, in the State of san Luis Potosi, Mexico. The Tiro General mine was first operated during the Spanish occupation of Mexico for rich silver ores in an oxidized zone along the outcrop of the principal vein. In depth the ore is a complex sulfide with widely varying proportions of sphalerite, argentiferous galena and chalcopyrite ; and until recent years, it was economically impossible to carry on mining otherwise than irregularly in sections of the veins richest in galena and chalcopyrite. The advent of selective flotation brought the orebody as a whole within the field of economic interest, and a flotation mill of 650 metric tons daily capacity was constructed in the year 1925. The mining of partly worked-out sections of the mine, as well as the very heavy ground in most of the stopes opened in virgin ore, presented an unusually difficult problem. This paper describes the so-called "filled top slice" stoping method finally adopted as the standard system. Physical and Geological Conditions The principal orebody of the mine is an oreshoot about 1400 ft ng in a fissure vein striking about east and west and with an average lip of 70" to the north. The footwall of the orebody is fairly cleancu and regular both longitudinally and vertically and generally shows a dell-marked post-mineral slip. The footwall rock varies from a fairly strong limestone to a broken, metamorphosed limestone which requires heavy timbering. In some sections it is an altered, crumbly porphyry, which swells badly and necessitates frequent renewal of drift and raise tirnber. The hanging wall is irregular and frequently an assay wall. The stopina width ranges from a few feet up to more than 90 ft.; it averages about 30 ft. For the most part the hanging-wall rock is a shattered and altered monzonite porphyry, nearly aways requiring heavy timbering. The orebody is greatly fractured by post-mineral movement, which usually followed the footwall and left it as a smooth surface frequently covered with a slippery clay gouge. Swaged iron wire has a cylindrical {001} <110> texture. The texture is also cylindrical after re-crystallization in the absence of a magnetic field, but <111> and <112> components are added to this texture when recrystallization occurs in a field. The mecizanical properties in tension and in torsion are not greatly altered by these changes in texture. AS shown in a previous paper,1 cold-worked wires of the two fcc metals copper and aluminum can be made relatively strong in torsion and weak in tension, or vice versa, by proper control of preferred orientation (texture). The deformation texture can be controlled by selection of the starting texture (texture before deformation), because certain initial orientations are stable during deformation. The present paper reports on similar work performed on bcc iron. In this case it was clear at the outset that there was no hope of controlling the deformation texture, which is one in which <110> directions are aligned parallel to the wire axis. (1t has usually been regarded as a fiber texture, but Leber2 has recently shown that it is a cylindrical texture of the type {001} <110>. In either case, <110> directions are parallel to the wire axis.) There is general agreement on this texture among a large number of investigators, which in itself suggests that the starting texture has no influence on the deformation texture. More direct evidence was produced by Barrett and Levenson,3 who reported that iron single crystals of widely varying initial orientations all had a single <110> texture when cold-worked into wire. Thus <110> is a truly stable end orientation for iron and probably for other bcc metals as well. Under these circumstances attention was directed to the possibility of controlling the recrystallization texture. This texture is normally <110> in iron,4 just like the deformation texture. However, it is conceivable that this texture could be modified by a proper choice of the time, the temperature, and what might loosely be called the "environment" of the recrystallization heat treatment. In the present work the environmental factor studied was a magnetic field. The effect of heating in a magnetic field ("magnetic annealing") on recrystallization texture has been investigated by Smoluchowski and Turner.5 They found that a magnetic field produced certain changes in the recrystallization texture of a cold-rolled Fe-Co alloy. The texture of this material is normally a mixture of three components, and the effect of the field was to increase the amount of one component at the expense of the other two. Smoluchowski and Turner concluded that the effect was due to magnetostriction. With the applied field parallel to the rolling direction, the observed effect was an increase in the amount of the texture component which had <110> parallel to the rolling direction. In the Fe-Co alloy they studied, the magnetostriction is low in the <110> direction and high in the <100> direction. Thus nuclei oriented with <110> parallel to the rolling direction will have less strain energy than those with <100> orientations and will therefore be more likely to grow. In a later paper on the same subject, Sawyer and Smoluchowski6 ascribed the effect to magneto-crystalline anisotropy and made no mention of magnetostriction. In the papers of Smoluchowski et al. the intensity of the magnetic field was not reported but it was presumably large, inasmuch as it was produced by an electromagnet. In the second paper6 it is specifically mentioned that the specimens were magnetically saturated. But if magnetostriction has a selective action on the genesis of stable nuclei during recrystallization, that selectivity must depend only on differences in magneto-strictive strains between different crystal orientations and not on the absolute values of those strains. Thus the saturated state does not necessarily produce the greatest selectivity, because the relative difference in magnetostrictive strains between different crystal directions may be larger for partially magnetized crystals than for fully saturated ones.7 In the present work the specimens were subjected to relatively weak fields (0 to 100 oe) produced by solenoids. MATERIALS AND METHODS Armco ingot iron rod (containing 0.02 pct C and 0.19 pct other impurities) was swaged from 0.25 in. in diam. to 0.05 in., a reduction in area of 96 pct.
