A tutorial account of the tunnel effect between metal electrodes separated by a thin insulating film is presented. Energy diagrams of metal-insulator -metal sandwiches are briefly discussed, and the isothermal and thermal J-V characteristics for symmetric and asymmetric tunnel junctions are derived from a generalized expression. Experimental data from tunnel junctions are presented, and it is shown how, correlation between theory and experiment permits a determination of some of the oxide properties. Finally, the barrier heights in AT-Al2O3-A1 junctions determined by various inr3estigators are discussed. The object of this paper is to give a tutorial account of the electric-tunnel effect between metal electrodes separated by a thin insulating film and to illustrate its utility in the study of metal-oxide interfaces. This paper will emphasize the theoretical aspects of the electric-tunnel effect: however, a brief account of the more recent experimental work will be presented. A more comprehensive experimental study of the tunnel effect will be presented in the following paper by Drs. Pollack and Morris, see p. 497. We will open with a discussion of the energy diagrams for metal-insulator-metal junctions and what we mean by the electric-tunnel effect. Following this is an account of the theoretical studies of Sommerfeld and Bethe, and Holm, and the recently reported calculations on symmetric and asymmetric junctions using the generalized formula. The theoretical presentation is concluded with calculations on the temperature dependence of the tunnel J-V characteristic. In the experimental section, it is shown how barrier heights and thicknesses are determined by comparing the experimental data with the theory. Finally, the results of various investigators on the determination of the barrier heights in Al-Al2O,-A1 systems are discussed. I) POTENTIAL BARRIERS BETWEEN CLOSELY SPACED ELECTRODES Since it is necessary to supply energy to a metal in order to observe electron emission from its surface, it is evident that the potential energy of an electron within a metal is lower than that of an electron at rest outside the metal. It follows, then, that the electron must undergo a change in potential as it crosses the metal-vacuum interface. In the Sommerfeld1 free-electron theory of metals it is assumed that the free electrons, the electrons responsible for the electrical characteristics of metals, move in a constant potential environment in the metal, and are contained within the metal by a potential barrier at the metal-vacuum interface. It will be evident that the idea of a constant potential environment is a very idealized model, since the potential energy of an electron is influenced by all of the atoms and the other electrons within the metal; however, its use is justified by the many excellent results it gives.2 Fig. l (a) is the energy diagram of the model envisaged by Sommerfeld; the metal is represented by a potential-energy well of depth V,; the vacuum level represents the energy of an electron at rest outside the metal. At 0°K the electrons, which exist in pairs in discrete energy levels, fill up the well to an energy ?, the Fermi level. The distance, Vo - ?, from the Fermi level to the vacuum level is known as the work function of the metal, and represents the minimum energy required to free electrons from the interior of the metal at 0°K.

R. E. Smallman (University of Birmingham, England)—Recently, Tedmon and Ferriss11 have determined the yield stress parameters oi and ky for tantalum by measuring the lower yield stress as a function of grain size 2d and fitting the results to a relationship of the form They report that although ky , which is taken to be a measure of the dislocation locking strength, is small (- 2 to 4 x 106 cgs units) a substantial yield drop is nevertheless observed in a normal tensile test. Niobium gives a similar result,12-14 as pointed out in the original work by Adams et a1.,12 and in order to check this apparent anomaly the yield-stress parameters of electron beam-melted niobium have recently been reanalyzed15 by the Luders strain technique. In this method the strain hardening part of the stress-strain curve is extrapolated to zero plastic strain; the intercept on the preyield portion of the curve is taken to give oi, whilst the difference between oi and the lower yield stress gives kyd-1/2. The results indicate that ky increases with increasing grain size and hence, a plot of vs d-112 yields an apparent ky, which is lower than the true value. A similar effect could account for the small ky found in the relatively pure tantalum used by Tedmon and Ferriss. The variation of ky with grain size shows that dislocations are more strongly locked in coarse-grained specimens than in fine-grained samples. In niobium, this may be attributed to the fact that the dislocation density in the fine-grained material is higher than that found in the coarse-grained samples which are given a sufficiently prolonged anneal to remove any residual substructure and, since the metal contains only a small amount of interstitual impurity, a variation in locking occurs. By contrast, application of both the grain size analysis and the Luders strain method to yield-stress data from commercially pure vanadium containing a large amount of interstitial impurity gives consistent values of oi and ky, with ky independent of grain size and temperature. Electron microscope observations show minor variations in dislocation density from grain size to grain size, but in any case in this material the dislocations are heavily locked with precipitate. On yielding new dislocations are generated and, as a consequence, the importance of any differences in dislocation density between the various specimens of different grain size is considerably reduced. It is perhaps significant that Adams and lannucci,16 working with a grade of tantalum containing a higher interstitial content than that used by Tedmon and Ferriss, prepared the specimens of different grain size by annealing in the temperature range 1500" to 2000° C to minimize any differences in dislocation structure, and found that ky had a value of 1.04 x 107 cgs units, independent of testing temperature. Such behavior is consistent with the dislocations being locked by carbide precipitates so that the generation of free dislocations is an athermal process. The recent work of Gilbert et al.17 also shows that in tantalum there is no significant variation of ky with grain size provided it contains 150 ppm of oxygen. In this case, however, the dislocations are not locked by precipitate and ky is temperature dependent. C. S. Tedmon and D. P. Ferriss (authors' reply)— We would like to thank Dr. Smallman for his interesting comments and discussion to our paper, "The Dependence of Yield Stress on Grain Size for Tantalum and a 10 pct W-90 pct Ta Alloy".18 It was suggested that perhaps the relatively small values obtained by us for ky of tantalum could be attributed to the same cause that accounts for the apparently small values of ky that result when it is determined by the Luders Strain technique. Since our values were obtained by plotting the lower yield stress vs the reciprocal of the square root of the grain size, it is not clear how this could be the case. The values of ky in this experiment have been calculated, using the Luders strain technique. With this method, values for ky on the order of 2 x 105 to 5 x lo6 cgs units were obtained. In spite of this rather large variation, the magnitudes are still small, and there appeared to be no good correlation between ky and the grain size or the yield stress, probably because of the difficulty in accurately extrapolating the work-hardening portion of the curve back to zero plastic strain. As was shown in the original data,18 there was little work hardening in any of the curves, at any temperature. In his discussion, Dr. Smallman also points out how ky has been observed to increase with increasing grain size, when determined by the Luders strain technique. There are at least two possible explanations for this. In the first case, if it is assumed that the bulk of the interstitial impurities are concentrated at the grain boundaries, then, of course, the available grain boundary area would decrease with increasing grain size, thus presenting less area for the interstitials, which would then presumably increase the concentration within the grains, thereby increasing the locking of the dislocations. In the second case, the increase in ky with increasing grain size would be attributed to the nature of the grain boundary itself. One of the several ways of deriving the Hall-Petch equation19 is based on the stress concentration arising from a pile-up of dislocations at the boundary. Recent jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the Paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out 01 the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely diflerent ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. Experimental The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. 6. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Colum- bia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, 3/8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to Serve for suspension-A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs- 2 and 3. Definitions The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. A granular product is long-range when it approximates a crushed or ground product limited as to upper size only; a short-rafzge product is one closely sized. When an excavation is made underground the original rock stresses are removed from the surfaces of the excavation. These surfaces converge to partially close the excavation and the superincumbent rock mass moves down towards the excavation. If the convergence of the surfaces of the excavation were controlled, energy generated by their motion against the controlling forces could be extracted. Since the total forces in the rock mass are not significantly affected by the excavation, stress concentrations arise around the excavation, which compensate exactly for those stresses no longer transmitted through the excavation. These phenomena give rise to two general principles which provide the basis for analyzing the effects of making any underground excavation. The first of these is that the total force resulting from the stresses across any plane in the rock, including any plane through the excavation, must be the same before and after the excavation is made. The second of these is that energy must necessarily be released as a result of making an underground excavation.

Solution by electric analogy of performance problems of reservoirs containing oil and gas has heretofore depended upon a process of successive approximations based on material-balance calculations, because of variation in fluid compressibility. By the addition or subtraction of electric condenser capacity, the analogy network can be adjusted automatically for changing compressibility due to evolution of gas in the reservoir. The addition of a condenser is accomplished by an electronic circuit, which is described; subtracting a condenser is done by merely opening the electrical circuit by means of a relay. Introduction V. Paschkis and H. D. Baker1 first developed in this country a method of applying the analogy of flow of electric current in noninductive circuits to solution of heat-flow problems and suggested its application for certain other problems, such as flow of fluids or mass transfer and chemical diffusion. Necessary details for applying the analogy to flow of fluids in porous media were developed by IV. A. Bruce;= he classified3 the types of analysis and predictions that can be made by the analogy in class I, when the reservoir contains oil but no gas for the period under consideration; in Class 2, when both oil and gas exist in the free state in the reservoir sometime during the period under consideration. Duplication of bottom-hole pressure history and predictions for class I reservoirs can be obtained directly by electric analogy. Until now, the solution of problems pertaining to reservoirs in class 2 was obtained by successive approximations along with material-balance calculations. The object of this paper is to present a method for simplifying the application of electric analogy to class 2 reservoirs, resulting in a solution of these problems as direct as is possible for class I reservoirs. This is accomplished by an electronic control circuit, which adjusts the analogy network for changing compressibilities of fluids contained in the reservoirs. Analogy Network In electrical phenomena the analogy to two-dimensional fluid flow in a porous media is that of current flow through an ideal conducting sheet. This sheet, perfectly insulated on both sides, has resistance and capacitance uniformly distributed throughout its area but is of negligible inductance. The need for having the surface boundaries perfectly insulated is that good correspondence may be had with a permeable fluid-conducting stratum bounded above and below by impermeable media. 111 actual application the ideal conducting sheet, which has distributed parameters, is replaced by a network having lumped values of resistance and capacitance—the resistances are series elements and the capacitances are shunt elements. IN October, 1925, J. R. Finlay delivered an address entitled, "The Future Price of Lead." Lead was then selling at 8.85c. and Mr. Finlay and most of the rest of us were concerned about the shortage. Now, a little more than six years after, lead is selling for 3.55c., and nobody is worrying about the difficulty of getting plenty of it. For 1931 the U. S. G. S. reports United States produc¬tion as 390,000 tons of recoverable lead in ore. Our estimate is slightly higher than this; nearer 400,000 tons. This is the smallest production since 1911 and 1912, but in spite of this, stocks for the year-have increased nearly 50,000 tons. Our estimate for the production outside the United States is 1,120,000 tons, or more than double the production of either 1920 or 1921, and 30 per cent more than in 1913. Stocks abroad probably have not increased more than stocks in the United States. In other words, foreign consumption is double what it was in 1.920-21, whereas domestic consumption is substantially less. It looks as if Mr. Krueger, president of the Swedish match trust, was right when he said that "This country had better stop worrying about Europe and think a little bit more about its own affairs."

CASTINGS of pure metals and many alloys usually have a coarse-grained structure characterized by long columnar grains throughout the main body of the casting. Frequently, the surface exhibits finer, some-times nearly equiaxed grains, and such grains may also compose other parts of the casting. This paper deals primarily with determinations of the grain-orientation textures of the columnar and surface grains of polycrystalline zinc castings. It includes some results upon a cadmium casting and a magnesium casting. A hypothesis is devel-oped to account for the observations on columnar grains and to use as a basis for predicting orientations in other cast metals. A general description of the position of the columnar grains in castings is that their long axes are approximately parallel to the direction of the thermal gradient during crystallization. Thus, in cylindrical castings the columnar grain axes tend to be radial, and in large flat castings where most of the cooling is through one or both of the large mold surfaces they tend to be perpendicular to the mold surfaces. At the edges and corners the direction of heat flow and there-fore the position of the grains is more com-plex. Actually observation shows that even in castings made in flat molds the cooling seems to be somewhat irregular, since columnar grains tend to emanate from certain areas of the cooling surface, indicat-ing that thermal contact was better there than in neighboring areas.

INTRODUCTION. THE following general survey of the character and present condition of the silver-mines of Mexico, though not offered as a detailed treatise, has been prepared with care, is believed to he generally up-to-date, and is offered as a summary which may be found useful by mining engineers. Mexico has ranked for several centuries first among the silver-producing countries. It is now second as copper-producer, and seventh as gold-producer, with a fast-increasing output every year. The total amount of capital invested in its mining- and smelting-works is more than $250,000,000, while the yearly metallic production is $160,000,000. There are more than 20,000 recorded mining properties. The silver-mines of Mexico represent deposits of three principal classes: (1) veins and stock-works in eruptive rocks; (2) fissure-veins crossing the crystalline schists, granite, diorite, etc. ; and (3) veins and replacement-deposits in limestone. The true fissure-veins in some districts contain (in value) more gold than silver. In other deposits, the silver is decreasing in depth, leaving galena and zinc-blende as the principal ores.

FREE competition, long the controlling ideal of domestic trade within the United States, has had the fundamental geographical advantage of functioning in the world's largest area of unrestricted commerce. Goods moved back and forth across state lines, unimpeded by customs, and industrial operations have developed rapidly to meet the expanding needs of a pioneer country richly endowed with natural resources. Fifty years ago, antitrust laws were adopted to protect the competitive private enterprise principle. It became illegal for one person to combine with another to restrain trade or commerce among the several states or with foreign nations. The original legislative measures defining this philosophy were the Sherman Act of 1890 and the Clay- ton Act passed in 1914. The development of Europe and other parts of the world was influenced by different conditions which led to a different theory of trade. Here were many small nations, with limited natural resources and a thin market, and they attempted to protect their national economy by tariff walls. International business arrangements for the purpose of diminishing the ups and downs of the more competitive system --crux of the modern cartel operations-seemed a logical device to stabilize production and guard the interests of both workers and consumers. European governments as well as European industrial interests became convinced that if com- petition could be held in bounds the danger of business depressions and un- employment could be reduced.

Discontinuous yielding in tensile tests was observed in V-O alloys in the temperature ranges of 150° to 175°C and also 350° to 400°C. The magnitude and intensity of the serrations were found to vary considerably with oxygen content. Maxima were observed in tensile and yield strengths and in the strain-hardening coefficient at the higher temperature only. The strain rate sensitivity was observed to be negative between 150° and 400°C. THIS investigation was undertaken to study the effect of oxygen on the tensile properties of iodide vanadium in the temperature range of 25o to 450°C. Brown1 observed an increase in strength between room temperature and 400°C in vanadium metal, and found that oxygen and nitrogen had a rather pronounced effect on the strength and ductility. A maximum in the tensile strength was observed by Rostoker et al.2 near 300oC and by Pugh3 around 450°C for calcium-reduced vanadium. Pugh also found a maximum in the yield strength and in the strain-hardening exponent, and minima in the elongation and strain rate sensitivity at the same temperature. Eustice and Carlson4 reported the appearance of serrations in the stress-strain curves between 140° and 180°C in iodide vanadium containing 600 ppm O. These anomalies in the mechanical properties indicate that strain aging occurs in vanadium, but the impurity or impurities responsible for the above-mentioned effects have not been identified. The phenomenon of strain aging is usually characterized by the return of the yield point after interruption of a strength test. In the temperature range where strain aging occurs, the yield and tensile strengths attain maximum values, elongation and strain rate sensitivity exhibit minima, and discontinuous yielding is generally observed in the stress-strain curve. Cottrell5, 6 has postulated that strain aging is due to the migration of solute atoms to dislocation sites to produce locking after the dislocations have broken free from their impurity atmospheres during the initial yielding. At the strain-aging temperature the process is a dynamic one in which the solute impurity atoms diffuse to the vicinity of the moving disloca- tion producing "locking" which gives rise to maxima in the tensile strength and serrations in the elongation curves. Cottrel17 has noted that discontinuous yielding in iron occurs when the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen, D, and the strain rate, i, are related by D = 10-9 €. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE The vanadium metal employed in this study was prepared by the iodide refining process as described by Carlson and owen.8 A representative analysis of the vanadium used in this investigation was: 150 ppm O, <5 ppm N, <1 ppm H, 150 ppm C, 150 ppm Fe, 70 ppm Cr, <50 ppm Si, 30ppm Cu, 20 ppm Ni, <20 ppm Ca, <20 ppm Mg and <20 ppm Ti. Alloys containing from 200 to 1800 ppm O, all of which lie in the solid solution range of the V-O system, were prepared by arc melting vanadium together with portions of a high-oxygen master alloy. The master alloy was prepared by tamping pure V2O5 into holes drilled in a vanadium ingot and arc melting this five or six times in an inert gas atmosphere, inverting the button between each melting step. The oxygen content of the master alloy was then determined by vacuum fusion analysis. Vanadium containing less than 150 ppm O was prepared in the following manner. A bar of iodide vanadium was deoxidized by sealing it in a tantalum crucible with a few grams of high-purity calcium. This was held at 1100°C for 4 days to allow time for the oxygen to diffuse to the surface and to react with the calcium vapors. The calcium oxide product was later dissolved from the surface of the bar with dilute acetic acid. In this way vanadium containing from 20 to 50 ppm O was prepared. Sample Preparation. The are-melted ingots were cold swaged into 3/16-in. diam rods and these were machined into cylindrical tensile specimens with a reduced section of 1.00-in. length and 0.120-in. diam. The test specimens were annealed for 4 hr at 900°C in a dynamic vacuum of mm of Hg to remove hydrogen from the metal. This recrystal-lization treatment produced a uniformly fine-grained structure with a mean grain size of approximately 0.06-mm diam. The oxygen contents reported in this paper were determined by a vacuum fusion analysis of the tensile specimens after testing. Analyses for other interstitial or metallic impurities showed no significant changes from that of the original material. Tension Tests. Tension tests were performed on a screw-driven tensile machine at a constant cross-head speed of 0.01 in. per min. Tests at elevated temperatures were carried out by heating the

Can this annealing action be obtained in the hardening heat by heating more of the bit, say at least 5 in., to the hardening temperature but quenching only the end of the bit by a shallow immersion? Short Rock-drill Steels Reclaimed by Welding By W. T. Ober, Lynn, Mass. Experimental tests by the Thompson Company have shown that short lengths of rock-drill steels may be reclaimed by electric butt welding. The drills used in the experiments were hollow drills l1/4-in. in diametcr containing 0.95 per cent. to 1.05 per cent. carbon. The ends to be joined must first be ground off fairly square and the greater part of the rust, scale, etc. removed for 3 or 4 in. back in order to insure good electrical contact with the dies of the welder and countersunk, with an 80° countersink, approximately 1/4 in. The steels are then clamped in the copper dies of the welder, so that a length projects from the inside edge of each pair of dies equivalent to from one-half to three-quarters the diameter of the drill. The drills should also be brought into accurate alignment. The first step is to bring the ends into close proximity and then close the primary circuit of the transformer, slowly bringing the steels together until their ends lightly touch, when they will "flash," that is, minute

Until recently porous bronzes have found many applications for self-lubricating bearings in the automotive, electrical, household appliance and general machine industries. The bulk of an annual production of several million pounds of copper powder had gone into the manufacture of these articles, of which by now more than a billion are in service. However, the war has brought severe curtailment of these bearings because of the scarcity of the two main constituents, copper and tin. The development of substitute materials of equal or superior properties has led to a large-scale replacement by products made from iron powder. In spite of the diminished interest in powdered copper-tin alloys caused by this trend, it was believed worth while to investigate some mechanical properties of these materials as a reference base for substitutes. In addition, experiments using the hot-press method were incorporated to investigate possibilities of saving vital equipment or opening new fields of applications. It must be assumed that by this time the powder metallurgy process of making porous bronzes, a development that found its first industrial applications more than 10 years ago, is well known in engineering. The patent literature and bibliography is volu- minous, most publications referring to porous, self-lubricating bronzes, containing about 10 per cent tin and I to 5 per cent graphite, with porosities in the range of 25 to 35 per cent.l-7 The excellent antifriction properties of these bearings, caused by the uniform impregnation with oil, are dependent on the interconnection of the pores and the uniform distribution of the graphite inclusions. The sintering mechanism of porous bronze, with its structural changes during the transformation of the metal powder into the sintered bearing has been shown in colored photomicrographs by Hall.* Diffusion between copper and tin was found to begin within one minute, when tin-rich transitory phases were formed. After 25 min. a homogeneous matrix of alpha was reached for an alloy containing 9.5 per cent tin and 6 per cent graphite. Price, Williams and Garrand,9 studying certain metal powder combinations in which sintering is accompanied by the cementing action of a liquid phase, including a 90-10 bronze sintered at 925°C., have found that if the treatment is carried out within the liquidus and solidus temperature range of the system, a peculiar process of alternate solution and precipitation occurs. The particles of the major solid constituent are dissolved in the minor liquid phase, but thereafter are reprecipi-tated on certain nuclei, which develop into large grains, usually rounded.

(written discussion *).-This paper is particularly interesting to me, because it gives data on a much mooted question, viz., the serviceability of Le Chatelier (platinum-platinum-rhodium) thermocouples under severe industrial conditions. It has always been supposed that platinum-platinum-rhodium thermo-couples, used at high temperatures under strong reducing conditions, would not give long service and were subject to rapid volatilization. The fact, however, that the carefully kept records indicate that a little more than 3 gm. out of more than 830 gm. was lost over this considerable period, shows what kind of service can -be obtained from platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples,, when properly installed, and well cared for. While the writer has no actual figures on the loss of weight, etc. of platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples under service, he was told, by the man in charge of pyrometers at a large industrial plant in which over 400 platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples were installed in furnaces doing various kinds of heat-treating work, that the average maintenance cost, for materials alone, including platinum-platinum-rhodium wires and protecting tubes, was 27 c. per furnace, per month:

PERSIA looms up more prominently each year as one of the richest oilfields in the world. The actual production in the south and the possibilities in both the north and the south are very great. The output in the south, where the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. operates a wide concession, is steadily increasing, the returns for the fiscal year 1922-23 being 2,957,028 tons. The estimated production for. 1923-24 is 3,775,000 tons. The figures for the past few years have been as follows: 1918-19 1,106,415 tons 1920-21 1,743,557 tons 1919-20 1,385,301 tons 1921-22 2,327,221 tons According to the company&apos;s last annual report, the production from the -Persian fields operated by its subsidiaries has been well maintained and is now being increased to deal with the expanding off-take of the company&apos;s refineries at Abadan, Persia, and Dandarcy, Wales. Test drilling in an entirely different area in Persia indicates the existence of a new oilfield, which it is intended for the time being to hold as a reserve.
