In the spring of 1931 an experiment was made at Anaconda with a small reverberatory furnace, with which was combined a roasting shaft. The arrangement is shown in the accompanying drawing (Fig. 1) and requires but little explanation. The general idea was to roast flotation concentrates, mixed with the proper fluxing materials, by dropping them down a heated shaft, from which the calcines would enter the smelting zone of the reverberatory furnace through an opening in the roof. The hearth of the reverberatory was 3 ft. wide by 21 ft. long. The roasting shaft was 3 ft. square inside and had an effective height of about 20 ft. The reverberatory furnace was arranged so that it could be charged either directly through the roof with regular hot calcines, in the usual manner, or by means of the shaft, at the top of which were a feeding arrangement by which cold flotation concentrates, suitably fluxed, could be fed continuously and a pipe through which cold air was blown in. Means were provided for distributing the feed over the cross-section of the roasting shaft. At first a mechanical arrangement was used but later it was found that a simple cone served the purpose equally well and gave less operating trouble. On account of the small size of the equipment, it was realized that absolute capacity and fuel consumption figures would mean but little. It was not to be expected that ratios comparable to those obtained in large furnaces could be gotten, and the only way in which any idea could be obtained as to the possibilities of the combination furnace was to run it in parallel with the reverberatory furnace charged in the usual manner and operating without the shaft. The results of such parallel runs are given in Table 1. The amount of oil burned in the reverberatory was purposely maintained at substantially the same rate during both runs in order that the benefits resulting from the shaft might be gaged. It was expected that the shaft would considerably increase the capacity of the reverberatory and that a better fuel ratio would be obtained on account of the high temperature at which the calcines would enter the

Duval Corporation, the copper -producing subsidiary of Pennzoil United, Incorporated, operates two plants south of Tucson, Arizona: Esperanza and Sierrita. The newest, the Sierrita mine and mill, came into full production in 1971 at a rate of 72,000 tpd (now 87,000 tpd) which at that time made it the largest designed copper plant in the world. In 1968, the largest milling units then available were selected; these included fourteen 16$ ft by 19 ft long ball mills (5 m by 5. 9 m), each equipped with a 3,000 hp motor. The primary crushing plant contains two 60 in. by 89 in. Allis- Chalmers gyratories; each is constructed for two-side dumping by 120- and 150-ton trucks. Access to the maintenance areas to service the drive motors, eccentrics, apron feeders, and speedup conveyor is through hatches between the crushers. This area also contains a good- sized elevator and a stairway. The rather shallow dump pocket, the 300 -ton crushed ore pocket, and the overall design make for a fine, compact arrangement for two 60 in. crushers installed in a total height of 89 ft (27. 13 m) from dump level to top-of-concrete at the lowest level beneath the collecting or speedup belt. This efficient layout is reflected in the short changeout time for mantle and concaves (8 and 30 hours respectively) and the low crushing cost of $0.0416 per ton (first half of 1975). The crushers are installed on 64 ft (19.5 m) centers (Bougainville and Palabora, both with 54 in. crushers, are 55 and 43 ft or 16.76 and 13. 1 m respectively). The switchgear room is located between the truck dumping positions on one side of the installation and the hydroset units on the other side, with dust collecting equipment mounted over the latter. Protection of these units from rocks falling from the trucks is provided by concrete walls. Truck dumping is controlled from a central 25 ft high (7.6 m) control room, which permits fine observation of operations. Removal of oversize boulders from the dump pockets is done with a hydraulic grapple or a rock hook or sling attached to the auxiliary crane hook. Spare mantle stands and a maintenance room with a zinc melting furnace are located at one end of the surface facilities. The maintenance room is equipped with an access door for the crane, which is equipped with 80- and 20-ton hoists. The two 84 in. (2. 135 m) apron feeders receiving the 6 in. (152 mm) crushed rock discharge onto a 72 in. (1. 83 m) collecting and wear belt operated at a speed compatible with the 60 in. (1.524 m) takeaway belt running at a speed of 630 fpm (192 mpm). This belt feeds a 54 in.

Discussion of the paper of M. E. Lormbardi,. presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 209 to 215. I. N. KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-Some years ago I made a swinging spider to carry a string of casing in a way somewhat similar to that described in this paper. The ground I tried it in was too soft for its successful operation. The spider had a central one-flange bushing to carry the slips. Under this flange and on top of the spider was a properly protected ball runway, or ball bearing, which permitted rotating the casing when it was in place and supported by the slips.

Lucien Eaton, Ishpeming, Mich. (communication to the Secretary *):—I began to use water Leyner drills at the Cliffs Shaft mine at Ishpeming, Mich., over four years ago, and now have over 20 in use. The ore in this mine is hard specular hematite, and is mined by the room-and-pillar system, the rooms being driven as breast stopes. For many years only 3 1/4-in. piston drills were used in the mine, each machine ordinarily being able to drill from 15 to 25 ft. of holes in a shift. In the hardest ground, however, it was often, impossible to drill more than 2 or 3 ft. in a shift. When water Leyner drills were used the footage drilled was materially increased, especially in the hardest ground, but it was found that in very hard ground the breakage of machine parts, and especially of drill steel, was very high. At this time round steel with lugs forged on the shanks was used, and most of the breakage occurred at or near the lugs. Many experiments were made in an endeavor to overcome this breakage, and it was finally decided to do away with the lugs altogether, and use hexagonal steel. Accordingly I designed a chuck to use hexagonal steel without luge, a tappet being interposed between the hammer and the shank of the' drill steel. The design of this chuck of the proper size for the No. 18 Ingersoll-Leyner drill is shown in Fig. I. The different parts are also shown photographed in Fig. 2. A is the barrel of the chuck, which revolves inside the front head. It is made of machinery steel. B is the bushing which screws into the front end of the barrel A, and in which the drill steel fits loosely. This is turned down from a steel casting, the hexagonal hole being cast and then broached out to the proper size. It is case hardened inside. C is the tappet, which fits smoothly inside A just behind the bushing B. It is made of " N " temper Crescent tool steel and is carefully tempered. The Molycorp operation at Mountain Pass, California, is unique in that it is the only place in the world where bastnasite is mined. The orebody is a metamorphic carbonatite; the mineral of importance is bastnasite, a fluocarbonate containing principally cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, and praseodymium, with small amounts of samarium, gadolinium, and europium. In addition, appreciable quantities of barite, calcite, and strontianite are present. Molycorp had mined and processed the bastnasite ore since the early 1950s at a rate of about 100 tpd by a unique hot flotation process in a plant originally used for cyanidation of gold ore. The concentrate was primarily used in high quality glass polishing, lighter flints, ceramics, and in specialty steel making. Then in the early 1960s, Molycorp and the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation developed a solvent extraction process to recover europium from the bulk rare earth concentrates. In 1965 a new SX plant was constructed to produce this material for use as a red phosphor in color television tubes. Because of the demand for this material, a new 500 tpd concentrator was designed and constructed in 9 ½ months. Then, because of a sharply increased demand for europium, the plant was expanded to 1200 tpd only four months after completion of the original construction. The crushing section of the new plant was designed similarly to those portable units used in road construction and arrived on the site in ten major pieces. Foundations were concrete piers; and after their completion, the entire crushing plant composed of primary and secondary crushers, conveyors, and a screen was erected in fourteen days by a crew of ten men assisted by a mobile crane. Pit-run ore is loaded into 35-ton trucks by a 7 yd (5.4 cu m) loader, trans- ported to .the crushing plant, and dumped into the 65 -ton concrete pocket. A 42 in. by 20 ft (1.07 m by 6. 1 m) apron feeder feeds ore to the 30 in. by 42 in. (760 rnrn by 1070 mm) single toggle jaw crusher. Crushed ore is trans- ferred by a scissors conveyor to a 5 ft by 14 ft (1.52 m by 4. 27 m) double- deck screen which produces a final ¾ in. (19 rnrn) product with the oversize being treated in a 4 ¼ ft (1. 3 m) standard cone crusher. Cone crusher product is returned to the first scissors conveyor to join the primary crusher product. Dust collection is by a wet scrubber, and an operator's control room is located to overlook the primary. The entire crushing is in the open, and a 30-ton mobile crane is used for maintenance. Molycorp’s two-stage crushing plant is an excellent example of functional design for a small mining and milling operation.

GEOLOGICAL engineering as applied to oil fields, or production geology as some prefer to designate the profession, is designed to fill in the border line between pure geology and pure petroleum engineering. Therefore the production geologist may, and frequently does, reach out to grasp much in both professions. Where once the oil geologist was content to pick samples out of a mud ditch and try to identify oil formations from the color or appearance of flakes of rock bailed out of a well, now he has to deal with graphic electrical logs obtained by intricate and highly technical electrical apparatus and to make exact determinations to the fraction of an inch of the depth and thickness of an oil sand 2 miles below the surface.

Direct identification in situ of x and a phase precipitates in stainless steel is possible with the electron probe microanalyzer. Although particles in the 1 p size range are too small to yield absolute percent composition, the relative % Crfi Mo ratio can be used to distinguish the two phases with better than 95 pct confidence. Wet chemical analysis of extracted residues gives Cr/Mo ratios in good agreement with electron probe results extrapolated to the 4 to 5 p size range. WHETHER the carbides associated with bainite precipitate from the ferritic component of bainite, as originally suggested by Davenport and Bain, or from the adjacent austenite at aus-tenite:ferrite boundaries, as proposed by Hultgren, 2 remains in dispute.3-5 A recent metallographic investigation in this laboratory has shown that the bainitic carbides formed in a plain carbon hypo-eutectoid steel nucleate entirely within ferrite at higher reaction temperatures3 and in both ferrite and austenite at lower temperatures." The present investigation was undertaken to ascertain the effects of alloying elements on the nucleation sites selected by bainitic carbides. A test is described in which the wellubility of porous rock is measured as a function of the displacement properties of the rock-water-oil system. Four displacemet operations are carried out: (I) sponlaneous displaceti?ent of water by oil, (2) forced displacement of water by oil oil in the same system using a centrifuging procetllrre, (3) spontaneous displacement of oil by water. and (4) forced displacment of oil by water. Ratios of the spontaneous displacement volumes to the total displucenlent volumes are used as wettability indicates. INTRODUCTTON Most investigators who have reported on the wettahility of porous rock have described such rock as prcferentially water-wet or preferentially oil-wet. In some cases a third classification, neutral wettability. has been used. The efficiency of water floods in each of these wettability groups has been described in numerous publications. Several methods for characterizing porous rock wet tability more precisely have been reported,' " but it appears that because of one weakness or another. none of these has been generally accepted. Early in our studies in this field, it was found that the displacement efficiency of oil by water in a particular porous rock having a strong preference for water was quite different from that in a similar rock having only a moderate preference for water. Thus, there appeared to be a need for a practical, reasonably precise wet tability test. one which could classify porous rocks into 10 to 20 different groups rather than the two or three broad groups listed above. The test developed to meet this need is described in this paper. Also, changes in wettability, as indicated hy this test, resulting from various core handling procedures are discussed. Finally, data showing the corrclation of wettability with waterflood oil recovery for two different types of cores are presented and discussed. Some confusion has resulted from the failure of certain writers to define clearly some of the wettability terms they have used. Accordingly, the following commcnts concerning definitions are offered. The wc t ta-hility of a solid surface is the relative preference of that surface to be covered by one of the fluids under consideration. It is felt that this is the generally accepted definition. The fluids being considered must bc specified (or understood) before the term wettability has any significance. In the work reported here these fluids are water (3 per cent brine) and oil (kerosene). The term preferential wettability is sometimes used, but we think that the word preferential is redundant here and should not be used. Tn line with the definitions of Jennings', a preferentially oil-wet solid surface is regarded as a surface which will show an oil advancing contact angle less than 90" (measured through the oil) in the water-oil-solid system. Oil will spontaneously displace water, if both are at the same pressure, from such a surface. A preferentially water-wet surface is analogous. This is consistent with the wettability definition above. As Jennings has said, frequently the term oil-wet is used to mean the same thing as preferentially oil-wet. However, oil-wet also has been used occasionally referring to an oil-covered surface when the availability of water was limited. To avoid confusion from this source, we do not use the terms oil-wet and water-wet. The term Boulder batholith was first applied in 1897 by W. H. Weed2 to the extensive mass of granite in western Montana within whose borders occur the ore deposits of Butte. In a general way this was known to extend from Helena on the north to the Highland Mountains near Butte on the south, and to be relatively narrow in its east-west diameter. Its intrusive relations to the surrounding sedimentary rocks, and its probable Tertiary age, were described by Weed, but in many ways his statements, based upon incomplete data, have required revision. Most notable of the errors of this description of the batholith were the failure,3 since corrected, to recognize the intrusive contact of the granite with the capping of andesite, and the complete absence of any reference to the many extensions of the granite beyond the somewhat narrow limits of its largest exposure.

This paper presents an analysis of the high-pressure, gas-driven LPG-slug process, based on fluid flow tests in areal models. Two types of tests were made. One series was made in low-pressure models which permitted observation of fluid movement. Three completely misci-ble analog fluids were used. A second series of tests was made in high-pressure models using methane, propane and a light refined oil saturated with methane at room temperature and 1,550 psig. Under the test conditions of room temperature and a pressure level of 1,550 psig, the phase diagram for the fluids used is similar to those for many of the field systems where the process is considered for use. A method for using these laboratory data to calculate field performance of the process is outlined. As a result of this work, it is concluded that small banks of LPG (5 per cent HV or less) are not effective in increasing oil recovery in horizontal reservoirs. Znstead, where small banks are used, the driving gas quickly penetrates the LPG bank because of fingering and channeling; and from this point on, the process behaves essentially as an immiscible gas-injection project. The validity of this conclusion was substantiated by: (1) laboratory studies of the effect of rate, model size and mobility ratio on miscible displacement in areal models; and (2) calculation of field recovery, which compared closely with actual field recovery. INTRODUCTION Field applications and pilot tests of the gas-driven, LPG-bank, oil-recovery process are on the increase. Most of these tests are employing small banks (2% to 5 per cent hydrocarbon volume) of LPG, which is miscible with both the driving gas and the oil in place, in an effort to attain an effective yet economical miscible displacement of oil by gas. The expectation of miscible displacement with small banks is based on the concepts that: (1) lengths of solvent-oil mixed zones, measured during miscible displacements in long slim cores, are representative of those that will occur in the field; and (2) areal sweep efficiencies5 measured in electrolytic model studies are applicable to miscible displacement in reservoirs. Our experimental evidence indicates that the mixed-zone lengths and sweep efficiencies mentioned are not applicable to miscible displacement in reservoirs. In this paper we present an evaluation of the gas-driven, LPG-bank oil-recovery process based on fluid flow experiments in areal models. These results are used to predict the performance of a field pilot test of this process, and the results are compared with the actual test results. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LPG BANKS The effectiveness of LPG banks of various sizes in accomplishing miscible displacement of oil by gas was determined by displacement tests in a model representing one-quarter of a confined five-spot pattern. The model, 12 X 12 X 1/4 in. in size, was packed uniformly with glass beads. It was operated at a pressure of 1,550 psig and at room temperature; the fluids used were methane, propane and refined oil saturated with methane at 1,550 psig. The saturated oil had a viscosity of 1.2 cp at room temperature. The results of these tests are shown in Fig. 1, where recovery is plotted as a function of the volume of fluid injected for: (1) an immiscible-gas drive with an oil-to-gas viscosity ratio of 85; (2) three sizes of LPG banks; and (3) two completely miscible displacements with mobility ratios of 85:1 and 10:1. (The miscible displacement data plotted are the averages of several tests.) The results show that a 2½ per cent bank of LPG does not increase oil recovery over that obtained by immiscible-gas drive. The 7 and 17 per cent banks are, respectively, about 30 and 50 per cent effective (with reference to the M = 85 miscible-displacement curve) in increasing oil recovery at the point where 2½ hydrocarbon volumes (HV) of fluid have been injected. The percentage effectiveness of the banks at a given volume of fluid injected is defined as Recovery by Bank — Recovery by Gas Drive Recovery by Miscible Recovery by Flooding Gas Drive We conclude from these results that banks of LPG smaller than about 5 per cent HV in an individual stratum will cause from little to no increase in oil recovery. This finding was substantiated by work in low-pressure models, which permitted visual observation of fluid movements. Thermal, metallographic, vapor pressure, and X-ray data were obtained to establish the phase diagram for the zinc-zzrconiz~m system. Five compounds corresponding to the stoi-chiometric formulas ZrZn, ZrZn,, ZrZn,, ZrZn,, and ZrZn14 were observed. All these compounds, with the exception of ZrZn2, which melts congruently at 1180°C under constrained zinc-vapor conditions, undergo pexitectic reactians. The temperature at which the zinc vapor pressure is I atm for a series of alloys was determined from vapor-pressure measurements. The data obtained are summarized in the construction of a I-atm-pressure phase diagram and a phase diagram corresponding to a pressure of less than 10 atm. THE purpose of this investigation was to establish the phase diagram for the zinc-zirconium system. Thermal, metallographic, vapor pressure, and X-ray data were employed in determining the phase regions. Partial investigations of this system have been conducted by Gebhardt1 and Carlson and Borders.' Carlson and Borders studied the high-zirconium region and established the existence of a eutectic at 69 wt pct Zr with a melting point of 1015°C. The terminal phases of the eutectic horizontal were shown to be an intermetallic compound ZrZn and a solid solution of ß zirconium containing 21 wt pct Zn. The ß solid solution decomposes into ZrZn and a zirconium at 750°C. The eutectoid composition is given as 15 wt pct Zn, and the solubility of zinc in a zirconium at temperatures below 750°C is indicated to be negligible. Gebhardt studied the zinc-rich region and observed a lowering of the melting point of zinc from 419.5" to 416°C and temperature horizontals at 545" and970°C. Some preliminary observations by Chiotti, Ratliff, and Kilp were reported by Hayes.2 pietrokowsky3 has reported the compound ZrZn2 to have a cubic MgCu2 structure with ao = 7.396A. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals employed in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc or Baker analyzed reagent granulated zinc, both 99.99 pct pure and hafnium-free iodide-process crystal bar zirconium obtained from the Westinghouse Electric Corp. The zirconium contained 200 ppm Fe, 200 ppm Si, 100 ppm C, and minor amounts of other impurities. The zirconium was milled or machined into thin chips or shavings. These were cleaned with a nitric-hydrofluoric acid solution, rinsed with water, and acetone, and dried just prior to their use in alloy preparation. The granulated zinc was similarly cleaned using dilute nitric or hydrochloric acid. Weighed quantities of these materials, 20 to 30 g total, were mixed and pressed at 20,000 to 70,000 psi to give relatively dense compacts. During the early part of this investigation the pressed compacts were placed in MgO-15 wt pct MgF, crucibles which were then sealed inside of quartz ampules. The compacts were given various prolonged heat treatments prior to their use for thermal analyses, or vapor-pressure measurements. Because of expansion of the compacts and the relatively high zinc vapor pressure it was difficult to heat to the melting temperatures of the alloys without failure of the quartz ampules. Homogenization at temperatures below the melting temperature gave brittle, porous alloys unsuitable for metallographic examination. It was also difficult to prevent condensation and segregation of zinc on the colder parts of the quartz ampules during heating and cooling operations. These problems were eliminated to a great extent by the use of tantalum crucibles. Tantalum proved to be a satisfactory container with little or no reaction between the alloys and the tantalum. Small tantalum thermocouple wells were successfully welded in the bottom of these crucibles. Pressed compacts were sealed inside the tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed caps under an argon atmosphere. Heat treating and differential thermal analysis were combined into a single operation. The experimental sample assembly is shown in Fig. 1. This assembly was enclosed inside a stainless-steel tube heating chamber which could be evacuated and filled with an inert gas. The thermocouple leads were brought out of the heating chamber between two rubber gaskets used to provide a vacuum seal for the water-cooled head. Most of the compounds in this system undergo peritectic decomposition. After heating above the temperature of a particular peritectic horizontal the sample was cooled to just below the peritectic temperature and held at temperature for several hours. The sample was then reheated through the peritectic temperature and the size of the thermal arrest, if still present, compared with the one previously obtained. If the thermal arrest was not characteristic for the alloy composition being investigated its magnitude diminished and repeated cycling and annealing eventually eliminated it. The peritectic thermal arrests characteristic of a particular composition were established in this manner.

I wish to express my keen appreciation of the article on the above subject by Coe and C1evenger.l It has been doubly interesting to me, for the reason that the experience recorded and the principles evolved practically parallel the results of similar investigations made by myself and others at The Lucky Tiger Mine, El Tigre, Sonora, Mex. An outline of the work at El Tigre may aid in confirming the principles expressed by Coe and Clevenger. El Tigre has the unenviable distinction of possessing a slime with a much lower settling rate than any recorded in the article discussed. Under most favorable conditions the settling rate is about one-third that reported for the Liberty Bell mill, and one-tenth that reported for the Nipissing, Golden Cycle, and Presidio mills. This slow settling characteristic of Tigre ore has necessitated careful investigation of settling phenomena throughout the various evolutions of the plant. Previous Settling Investigation at Tigre During construction work at the mill, the metallurgical engineer in charge, D. L. H. Forbes, ran a series of experiments on settling. His tests proved that deep settling tanks were not ordinarily necessary. The use of tanks 2 or 3 ft. in depth was suggested.2 Later experiments demonstrated that the following principles of settling applied to Tigre pulp.3 1. In settling dilute pulp, settling rates are independent of pulp depth. 2. In settling thick pulp, settling rates are approximately proportional to pulp depth.4

The term " Anthracite Coal-Field " is generally used to refer to a comparatively small territory lying in the eastern-central part of Pennsylvania. This territory includes about 3,300 sq. miles of area, located chiefly in five counties in which anthracite-mining is the dominant industry. Although an area of 3,300 sq. miles is embraced in the region, less than one-fifth of this area, or only 484 sq. miles, is underlain by workable coal-seams. Moreover, this prorluctive portion is not a continuous area, but consists of a number of detached basins. These are known as the Northern, containing 176 sq. miles; Eastern-Middle, containing 133 sq. miles; Southern, containing 181 sq. miles; and western-Middle,containing 194 sq. miles. From the standpoint of business and trade, the region is divided into three districts, known as (1) the Wyoming, which includes the Northern field and the small Bernice basin; (2) the Lehigh region, which includes all of the Eastern Middle field and that part of the Southern field east of Tamaqua; and (3) the Schuylkill region, which includes the WesL ern-Middle field and that part of the Southern field west of Tamaqua. The relative commercial importance of these districts at the present time is shown by the coal-shipments as given in the following table :

The wire textures for cold rolled and recrystallized iodide titanium and the sheet textures for this material produced by cold and hot rolling, and recrystallization at a series of temperatures were determined. &apos;The effect of the a + ß transformation on the sheet texture was noted. UNTIL recently it was believed that all hexagonal close-packed metals deformed by slip on the basal plane, (0001), and that rolling should tend to rotate this slip plane into the plane of the rolled sheet. The pole figures of cold rolled magnesium&apos; are satisfactorily explained on this basis. There is a tendency for the <1120> directions to align parallel to the rolling direction, and the principal scatter is in the rolling direction. Zinc% as a rolling texture in which the hexagonal axis is inclined 20" to 25" toward the rolling direction. Twinning is believed to account for the moving of the basal plane away from parallelism with the rolling plane. The texture of beryllium3 places the basal plane parallel to the rolling plane with the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction, and the scatter from this orientation is primarily in the transverse direction. Cold rolled textures reported for zirconium&apos; and titanium5 how the [1010] directions to lie parallel to the rolling direction and the (0001) plane tilted by approximately 25" to 30" to the rolling plane in the transverse direction. Rosi has recently reported that the mechanisms for deformation in titanium are distinctly different from those commonly reported for hexagonal close-packed metals. The principal slip plane is the prismatic plane, {1010), with some slip also occurring on the pyramidal planes, (1011). However, there is no evidence for basal slip. The slip direction is reported to be the close-packed digonal axis, [1120]. In addition to the twin plane commonly reported for metals of this class, {1012), Rosi found the twin planes (1122) and {1121), with the dominant twin plane being (1121). Information regarding the recrystallization and hot rolling textures of hexagonal close-packed metals is limited. Barrett and Smigelskas report that rolling beryllium at temperatures up to 800°C and recrystallization at 700°C produce textures not differing from the cold rolled sheet texture.3 McGeary and Lustman find that hot rolling at 850°C produces the same basic texture in zirconium as rolling at room temperature.&apos; These investigators also report that the texture for sheet zirconium recrystallized at 650 °C differs from the cold rolled orientation inasmuch as the [1120] direction, instead of the [1010] direction, is parallel to the rolling direction. In the case of titanium, it is not possible to deduce which direction is preferred in the recrystallized state from the pole figures presented by Clark." The purpose of this paper is to report an extensive investigation of the preferred orientations in iodide titanium. Since the deformation mechanisms for titanium are different from those commonly given for hexagonal close-packed metals, it is not surprising to find distinct differences between the textures of titanium and other metals of this class. Materials and Methods This investigation was carried out on iodide titanium obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. with an analysis as follows: N2, 0.002 pct; Mn, 0.004; Fe, 0.0065; A1, 0.0065; Pb, 0.0025; Cu, 0.01; Sn, 0.002; and Ti, remainder. The crystallities of titanium were broken from the as-deposited bar and melted to form 20 g buttons on a water-cooled copper block in a vacuum arc-furnace. Hardness tests conducted on the material before and after melting differed by only two or three Vickers Pyramid Numbers, indicating no or insignificant contamination. The buttons were hot forged, ground, and etched to sizes and shapes suitable for the rolling schedule, and vacuum annealed at 1300°F. Specimens for determination of the wire textures were reduced 91 pct in diameter to 0.027 in. in 24 steps using grooved rolls. In order for the orientation of the central region to be studied, portions of these wires were electrolytically reduced to a diameter of 0.005 in. using the procedure described by Sutcliffe and Reynolds.&apos; The sheet textures were determined on titanium cold rolled 97 pct to a thickness of 0.005 in. A reduction of approximately 10 pct per pass was used, and the rolling direction was changed 180" after each pass. Specimens used for determination of the recrystallized textures were annealed in evacuated quartz tubes at 1000°, 1300°, and 1500°F. The grain size of the 1000°F specimen was sufficiently small to give satisfactory X-ray patterns with the specimen stationary. However, it was necessary to scan the surface of the other recrystallized specimens. The microstructure of each annealed specimen was that of a recrystallized material. The diffraction rings all showed the break-up into spots typical of recrystallized structures.

THE hot working of chromium was first reported by Hunter and Jones; who used small pellets of the material obtained by the reduction of chromium chloride with sodium. Later, the working of chromium at 600° to 1100°C was reported by Marden and Rich,2 and at 1250°C by Kroll3 The hot rolled material3 had a Brinell hardness of about 150 (62.5 kg, 2.5 mm ball, 1 min) and was brittle at room temperature. Except for that associated with hardness indentations, no plastic flow in chromium at room temperature has been reported to the author&apos;s knowledge. Studies described here have shown slip markings in chromium after deformation at room temperature.

An hcp phase may be induced by cold working the ß&apos; phase of the Ag-Zn system. This phase reverts to ß&apos; on subsequent aging. No phase change occurs on cold working the o phase, but ß&apos; is formed when the deformed alloy is subsequently aged at room temperature. It is concluded that for alloys near 50 at pct Zn the ordered bcc ß&apos; phase is the equilibrium structure at room temperature. WhEN the disordered bcc ß phase of the Ag-Zn system is cooled to temperatures below 258o to 274oC, it transforms to a complex hexagonal phase <o.1,2 The nature of the o ß=o transformation has been the subject of some discussion,2&apos;3 and the structure of o has been described in detail.&apos; The latter phase appears to be stable on aging at room temperature but decomposes following cold work. When alloys containing approximately 50 at. pct Zn are rapidly quenched from the 0 phase field, the ß ? o transformation may be suppressed; but the ß phase undergoes an ordering reaction (ß ? ß&apos;). The ß&apos; structure may also be obtained as a result of cold working and aging at room temperature.4 Kitchingman, Hall, and Buckley4 have suggested that the decomposition of (o following cold work proceeds in two stages, (o ? ß followed by ß ? ß&apos;, but did not confirm this by experiment. When the ordered &apos; phases in the systems Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 are cold worked, they become unstable and transform to a close-packed hexagonal phase (( ) indicating that when order is destroyed in a ß&apos; structure the close-packed hexagonal phase may in many cases be more stable. It thus became of interest to study more closely the effect of cold work and annealing on the stability of both the ß&apos; and o phases in a Ag-50 at. pct Zn alloy. Predetermined weights of spectroscopically-pure Ag and Zn, supplied by Johnson and Matthey, were melted and cast under 1/2 atm of He in transparent vycor tubing. The ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 630°C and quenched into iced brine. Since mechanical polishing was found to induce a phase change, sections were first polished at room temperature, sealed in tubes under 1/2 atm of He, reannealed for several days at 630o or 200°C and then quenched into iced brine. Sections of the alloy thus prepared were found to be homogeneous when examined under the microscope. The sample quenched from 630°C (ß -phase region) was pink in color, whereas the sample quenched from 200°C (o-phase region) was silver. The latter sample showed the characteristic hexagonal anisotropy when examined under polarized light. Filings of the alloy were examined at room temperature, after various heat treatments, using an RCA-Siemens Crystalloflex IV diffractometer with filtered CuKa radiation. The X-ray reflections from flat powder specimens quenched from 630o and 200°C and sieved through 230 mesh were recorded graphically at a scanning speed of 1/2 deg per min. The resultant patterns are shown in Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) and may be identified as those of the 8&apos; and <02 structures respectively. The lattice parameter of the ß&apos; phase was determined as 3.1566Å.* This value compares very well withthatto be expected for a 50 at. pct Zn alloy from the data of Owen and Edmunds? and indicates that no loss of Zn occurred during casting. In order to study the effect of cold work upon the ß&apos; and o phases, filings made at room temperature and sieved through 230 mesh were mounted immediately in the diffractometer-i.e., without a strain-relief anneal. Changes in structure on subsequent aging were followed by scanning repeatedly over the regions of the low index reflections of the ß&apos; and o structures-i.e. , 28 from 35 to 44 deg. Immediately after filing the 8&apos; specimen, additional diffraction peaks were observed in the low-index region of the pattern, as shown in Fig. 1(c). These additional peaks do not coincide with those of the o structure, Fig. l(b), but may be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2), and (10.1) reflections of an hcp phase (<) with nearly ideal axial ratio. However, this hexagonal phase appears to be very unstable since within a very short time at room temperature it reverts back to the ordered ß&apos; phase, the reversion being complete within seven hours. The 5 ? ß&apos; reversion reaction is, therefore, very similar to those already reported in Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 7&apos;alloys. The action of filing caused the deformed surface of the originally pink ingot to become silver in color, indi-cating that the ( phase possesses similar reflecting properties to the o phase.
