THE growth of domestic requirements for motor fuel has been phe-nomenal, rising year after year in a fashion almost unique among com-modities, resisting depressions and forging rapidly ahead in times of prosperity. Consumption advanced from 226 millions of barrels in 1925 to 522 millions of barrels in 1938; or 130 per cent. The economic influ-ences generating and sustaining this demand are of vital concern to the petroleum industry. The general factors affecting utilization of motor fuel are well known but it is the purpose of this paper to employ the recently developed technique of economic dynamics to describe them mathematically. Such problems in economic analysis are complicated by the freedom of all the variables to fluctuate, their mutual interdependence, changing incidence upon one another, and the nonquantitative character of some of them. Economic quantities and relationships, unlike those of the physical world, are continuously changing and this dynamic characteristic is both a distinguishing and confusing feature in economic research. The com-plexities of the problems require application of the analytical devices of mathematical statistics to uncover the probable relationships between factors. The procedure employed is to formulate a logical relationship linking the dependent to the independent variables, and then simul-taneously, rather than sequentially, determine their separate effects by multiple correlation. This transformation of common knowledge to quantitative terms makes it possible to measure the probable effects of changing conditions upon requirements, assisting in the sound interpreta-tion of economic policies. The utility of the results of such dynamic analysis is in sharp contrast to the sterility of the trends and other simple empiricisms of descriptive statistics. It is not intended in this study to throw light on the reasons why any motor fuel at all is consumed; but to discover relationships explaining why more was consumed at one time than at another. Discussion of Mr. Baker's paper, read at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. MR. T. F. WITHERBEE, Durango, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) : Mr. Baker's paper is very instructive in that it shows how furnace-derangements sometimes originate from apparently slight causes. In 1896 a similar burning through of the lining occurred at the Mayville furnace of the Northwestern Iron Co., Mayville, Wis., in exactly 38 days from the time the furnace was blown in. At that time I attributed it to the fact that the bell was carried several inches to the front side of the furnace, the length of the versed side of the arc described by the lever, thus dumping a little more of the charge on the back side, which made the front side of the furnace-charge more open and consequently increased the circulation of the furnace gases through it. After reading Mr. Baker's description, I believe that possibly a little more ore was charged on the back side of the hopper, due to the fact that it was nearest to the elevator. This unequal charging, however, was unconsciously done, as the fillers were both honest and faithful. The illustration of the burned lining of Furnace No. 1, given in Fig. - of Mr. Baker's paper answers very well for the Mayville furnace. It shows that in both cases the destruction of the lining was largely due to faulty construction, in that there were no cooling-plates in the angle of the bosh and in one or two courses of brick above it, where I believe they are-more in demand than anywhere else in the furnace. The presence of these cooling-plates at the angle of the bosh would have obliged the current of the hot gases to turn the corner and would have prevented them from following the angle of the bosh com¬pletely through the lining and shell.

The precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstatten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. A complete solution has been obtained for the figure formed by Fe4N. The structure of Fe3P, however, is not fully known and a complete solution of this figure thus cannot be obtained; nevertheless, a study of this figure has furnished some new information. Precipitation of Fe4N from Alpha Solid Solution of N in Alpha Fe Constitution of System Iron-nitrogen A knowledge of the constitution of the whole of the Fe-N system is unnecessary for this work, though the recent studies by Eisenhut and Kauppl and by Lehrerz have clarified most of the moot points; it is sufficient for our purpose to state that a Fe of high purity dissolves 0.42 per cent of nitrogen in solid solution at the eutectoid temperature, 591' C., and that this solubility decreases at first rapidly and then more slowly until at room temperature the solid solubility amounts to approximately 0.1 per cent nitrogen.3

A numerical method for solving partial differential equations in steady state fluid flow is described. This method, known as the "relaxation method," has two advantages over analytical methods: (1) practically any problem can be solved, and (2) a solution can be obtained quickly. A disadvautage is that the solution is not general. The method is applied to core analysis and relative permeability measurement to calculate constriction effects and to calculate the true pressure drop measured by a center tap in a Hassler type relative permeability apparatus. Further applications are suggested. INTRODUCTION Many problems in fluid flow cannot be solved analytically because of the nature of the boundary conditions. For many problems, however. an exact answer is not necessary because boundary conditions are not exactly defined or the parameters describing the porous medium are not accurately known. The relaxation method can be used to obtain an approximate answer easily and quickly for the flow of incompressible fluids in porous media. The method can also be used for other types of problems, such as determining the stress in a shaft under load. or the temperature distribution during steady state heat flow. In this discussion only calculations concerned with the flow of fluids in porous media will be considered. The method was introduced by R. V. Southwell in 1935.' THEORY The treatment given here follows that given by Enimons.2 Consider a porous medium to be replaced entirely by a net of tubes of equal length and uniform cross-sectional area as shown in part in Fig. 1. Assume that the net of tubes behaves exactly like the porous medium which it replaces; that is, the net can be made fine enough to reproduce exactly the porous medium. Assume also that Darcy's Law can be used to calculate the flow from one point to another point through these tubes. The flow from point 1 to point 0 is KA . ------ P-P) .......(11 where a is the distance between points: K is the "permeability" of a tube; A is the cross-sectional area of a tube; is the viscosity of the liquid in the porous medium; and (P1 — P0) is the pressure difference between point 1 and point 0. In like manner the flow can be calculated from points 2, 3, and 4 to point 0. The net flow into point 0 is Qo = KA/µa (P1 + P2 + P33 + P4-4P0) . . (2) MB For an incompressible fluid the net flow into point 0 will be zero or, Q. = 0. This says that at point 0 fluid is neither being accumulated nor depleted. 'Therefore. If. now. with specified boundary conditions. the pressure i.; known at a finite number of points in a given region, as at the points shown in Fig. 1, Equation (3) will be satisfied at every point. If, on the other hand, the pressure is not known, the pressure can be guessed at these points. Then. unless the guess is perfect. Equation (3) will not be satisfied at all of the points. Equation (4) shows how much the pressure guess is in error at point 0 with respect to the surrounding points. A positive residual means that the pressure is too low, and a negative residual means that the pressure is too high. To bring the residual, 6. to zero in order to satisfy Equation (3). it is necessary to make changes in the pressure guesses. Equation (4) shows that a +1 change in Po will change the residual at point 0 by -4. A +1 change in the pressure at any of the four surrounding points will change the residual at point 0 by +l. Thus it can be seen that a change at any point will affect the residual at that point and the four surrounding points. By changing the pressure from point to point, all of the residuals can eventually be brought nearly to zero and the problem will be solved. This procedure is the essence of relaxation methods and is used to relax the residuals so that Equation (3) is satisfied at every point. The procedure can be most easily explained in detail by solving a simple problem. as Southwell says, "To explain every detail of a practical technique is to risk an appearance of complexity and difficulty which may repel the reader. Few subjects have attracted the attention of metallurgists more than oxygen in steel. From the days of Mushet and Ledebur interest in this subject has been increasing, and as additional knowledge has become available, the problem has naturally grown more complex. Instead of using the simple term "oxygen" we now distinguish between iron oxide, silicates of various kinds, oxysulfides, oxygen as gas and oxygen in solid solution in steel. There are five general methods for determining oxides in steel: hydrogen reduction; vacuum fusion; various wet-extraction methods, including electrolytic methods; methods depending on volatilization of the iron away from the oxides; and metallographic methods. For oxygen in solid steel each of these methods has both advantages and disadvantages. The hydrogen-reduction method is of no use on steels above about 0.20 per cent. carbon;' furthermore, it gives only FeO and possibly some MnO. The vacuum-fusion method2 is expensive and gives total oxygen, with the exception of some A12O3, and does not differentiate between the various oxides in which the oxygen exists. Most of the wet extraction methods3 give only the more insoluble oxides SiO2 and A12O3, though the iodine method gives MnO to an uncertain degree (information that may be more misleading than no information

AT the new Graham-Central Mill of Eagle-Picher, near Galena, Ill., material is simultaneously dewatered and introduced into the ball-mill scoop boxes by the use of variable-speed, 24-in. spiral classifiers. This arrangement has proved satisfactory in that the moisture content of the wet feed is reduced, thus allowing maintenance of density within the mills, and a constant feed at any desired rate to the mills is provided. In this mill the primary feed is wet crushed to minus 1/2 in. and preconcentrated by jigs to produce a bulk lead-zinc-iron concentrate and a waste tailing. The jig concentrate is then dewatered by a conventional dewatering classifier and stored in bins ahead of the ball mills. Even though this material is well dewatered, the discharge at the bin bottom is sloppy because of the gradual drainage of the water from the surface of the particles. Conventional belt feeders with vertical cutoff gates are unsatisfactory because of the flushing characteristic of the wet sand. The new installation employs 24 in. x 10 ft, 9-in. Simplex double-pitch spiral classifiers for feeders from the bin bottoms to the ball mill scoop boxes (fig. 1). These units are arranged with straight tanks and are driven by 5 hp motors through a U. S. Vari-Drive to provide a 4 to 1 speed ratio. Each bin discharges through a chute into the rising side of the spiral. The flushing characteristic of the material from the bottom of the bin is utilized to maintain a steady feed. A small amount of water tapped into the bottom of the bin insures uniform feed to the classifier. Excess clear water drains over the weirs. Feed rate to the mills is controlled by the variable-speed drives. The feed delivered by the spiral at a given speed setting is relatively dry, uniform, and steady, and as such is easily controlled by the operator. The classifiers are set on a pitch of 5 in. per ft and have a sand-raking capacity of from 8 to 32 tons per hr. It is believed that the solution of this problem offers possibilities for the storage of deslimed rod-mill sands and other similar products of the industry.

In a laboratory study of grinding and classification' of silica sand, a satisfactory means of producing the medium-fine specification sand desired by producers of flint-glass containers was developed. The best procedure consisted of ball-mill grinding and double classification, which gave a properly sized sand containing less iron than the feed.

THE statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Me Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. ½ in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5° B., flashing in open test at 199° F. The oil is heated to about 200° F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 lb. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-oz. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and "dog houses? to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent.

The existence of a grain size stabilization effect on martensitic type reactions as shown by Scheill in an iron-29 pct nickel alloy and by Troiano and Tokich2 in cobalt prompted a review of other martensitic reactions to determine if this stabilization effect is characteristic of all martensite type reactions. Preliminary work has shown this effect to be present both in the gamma —+ epsilon transformation in an iron-20 pct manganese alloy and the martensite transformation of SAE 4140 and 3 pct Cr-O.40 pct steels. No appreciable effect was found in an SAE 2340 steel. The M, temperature for the gamma —+ epsilon transformation was lowered from 380°F to about room temperature by varying the annealing treatment following cold work as shown in Table I. The effect of austenitic grain size on the M, of three steels is shown in Table 2. M, was deter- mined by the conventional quench-temper method of Greninger and Troiano. In a single crystal the change in external shape concomitant with the homogeneous shear mechanism of the martensite transformation can take place unhindered. In a polycrystalline specimen a restraint of these changes must occur at the grain boundaries. Therefore, the smaller the grain size the greater the shear strain energy necessary for the formation of a martensite crystal. The degree of lowering of M, due to the reduction of grain size is much greater when the change in crystal structure involves only a small energy change, such as face-centered cubic —+ close packed hexagonal (that is, CO and Fe-20 pct manganese alloy). The maximum lowering of M, observed in the steels investigated was 50°F with a change in the ASTM austenitic grain size of 1-2 to 8-9. In comparison, the crystal structure change face-centered cubic —+ body-centered tetragonal involves a considerable energy change. There is little doubt that with much finer grain sizes the increased grain boundary restraint would greatly enhance this stabilization effect. The implications of this phenomenon are multifold. Undoubtedly. under certain conditions it offers a method of stabilizing high temperature phases for room temperature

The degree of automation that has evolved in the dumping and hoisting of ore at the 3A and 3B hoisting shafts of the San Manuel mine is discussed. Motormen underground now dump their own trains at shaft pockets with rotary car dumps which operate semiautomatically. The ore is then drawn out of the 1200-ton shaft pockets into measuring baskets in skip loading stations, loaded into bottom-dump skips, hoisted, and dumped into coarse ore bins on the surface, in a fully automated operation. In an underground control room on the 2075 level midway between 3A and 3B shafts, car dumping, skip loading, and hoisting systems are monitored on lighted control panels which mimic each step in the operation. Here skip loading and dumping are viewed on closed-circuit television.

The Gaudin-Meloyl equation for the size distribution of fragments resulting from single fracture is where y is the mass fraction of material smaller than size x, and x, and r are parameters to be determined from the experimental data. In physical terms, r is associated with the number of active flaws in a particle of characteristic dimension xo . The special attribute of this equation is its emphasis on the coarse size region of a distribution. There are various procedures2-5 for obtaining the parameters in Eq. 1, but a simple graphical method is awaited. This situation contrasts sharply with that in the cases of the familiar Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and Rosin-Rammler equations.6 The purpose of this note is to present a method based on a procedure7 which has been successful in several other applications.8-13

To start, accelerate, and stop each motor vehicle demands the use of clutch and brake. Friction is applied intensively to both these mechanisms, and their linings must therefore be of materials that will resist wear and that will not ignite with the heat of friction. Asbestos, that curious fire-resisting: natural fiber that may be woven into unburnable cloth, is eminently suitable for this special' use, and no satisfactory substitute for it has yet been found Because- asbestos is regarded as absolutely essential to all types of motor transport on land, and in addition is indispensable to. many .other kinds of machines and equipment, the situation of the- United State's with respect to supplies of-raw-material-is of special interest: From the standpoint of national self-sufficiency, conditions are far, from satisfactory, for United States mines furnish only three to four percent of the total domestic require-

The low solubility of bismuth in copper and its segregation at copper grain boundaries with resulting embrittlement is well known.1-3 The heterogeneous diffusion of liquid bismuth into polycrystalline copper has also been studied.4 This work presents some further observations on these phenomena using high-resolution auto radiography to detect the presence of bismuth in copper polycrystalline and bicrystal specimens. The auto radiographs were made by the stripping film technique which produces an autoradiograph that is intact with specimen surface and can be examined simultaneously with the under-lying microstructure. The details of the technique have been described previously.3 In one series of experiments, high-purity copper was alloyed with 0.02 to 0.03 wt pct radioactive bismuth obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Frood mine (Fig. 1) is 2½ miles north of Sudbury, at a general elevation of 1000 ft. above sea level. It includes the original Frood location, which was the No. 3 mine of the Canadian Copper Co., and the adjoining Frood Extension, which until 1929 belonged to the Mond Nickel Co. Mine Openings The mine is operated from two vertical shafts and one underground incline shaft. No. 3, for men, supplies and ore, is a vertical six-compartment shaft in the footwall of the south mining area and extends froin surface to a depth of 3045 ft. No. 4 is a vertical three-compartment shaft, 2500 ft. north of No. 3 and adjacent to the north mining area. It extends from surface to a depth of 3345 ft., and is used exclusively for hoisting ore. No. 5 shaft, inclined at 65' to the horizontal and of three compartments, is near No. 4 and extends from the 2600-ft. level to 77 ft. below the 3100 level. It is used for development below the 2800 level. The ventilation shaft, No. 1, with which this paper is directly concerned, will be described fully in the following pages. Mining Methods The orcbody is laid out in 80-ft. sections at right angles to the gcneral strike and numerically indicated from the southern extremity toward the north. Each section consists of a 45-ft. stope and a 35-ft. pillar, extending the full width of the orebody. Pillars and stopes are superimposed from level to level. The present mining territory is divided into two vertical areas, a north and a south area. Both areas have the same number of stopes on each level, the two areas being separated by 10 sections to be mined later. In a few instances, at the ends of the south area, where the orebody has narrowed, longitudinal stopes are used, of more than the usual 45-ft. width. It will thus be seen that mining operations hare been concentrated in two relatively small areas, offering

There are two methods of determining the fusibility or refractoriness of fire-clays, the theoretical and the experimental. In the former, conclusions are drawn from the chemical composition; in the latter, from the changes which the clay undergoes when subjeoted to intense heat. It is well to use both methods, beginning with the actual heat-test and explaining the results obtained from this by the help of the chemical analysis. In discussing the subject, however, it is better to reverse this order. I. The Theoretical Method.* Leaving out the hygroscopic and combined waters and any organic matter, as not directly affecting the fire-resisting property, the refractory constituents of fire-clay are alumina and silica, and the fluxing constituents magnesia, lime, soda, potash and ferric oxide. According to Bischof,† alumina is the least fusible component, and silica follows close upon it. If, however, a mixture of the two be heated, it will be found that its melting-point is much lower than that of alumina, as a silicate will then have been formed. After an adventurous past-four changes of government in thirty years -the whole of Silesia and attached coal territories have become part of the Polish State. The coal resources of this area are the biggest among the European countries. Under a surface area of 5700 sq km are about 100 coal seams, with a total thickness of 150 meters. According to German estimates, there are some 150 billion metric tons of coal ranging in thickness up to 14 m within a depth of 1500 m. The seams are mostly level, free from faults, with good top and bottom; the coal is of excellent quality, hard and clean; and mining conditions are favorable. The mines are worked at considerable depth by means of vertical shafts and operate with cage and skip hoisting. Before the war, the mines were up to date, equipped with modern machines. Among the European countries, output per man shift was the highest ? 1.9 to 2.1 metric tons ? and cost of production was the lowest.

Crushed limestone is now being "de-dusted" at the Warner Co. plant in Bellefonte, Pa., by a new high-efficiency classifier utilizing aerodynamic principles not previously employed in classifiers. Crushed limestone for certain glass industry requirements must not have more than 10 pct fines in the overall aggregate, and it is the function of the new-type classifier to separate these fines from the coarse material. During the development of this classifier by the Buell Engineering Co. of New York, it was found to have possible applications for separating pulverized coal, sintered metals, ores, mineral flours, and fillers, among other items. Limestone from Warner's deep mine is initially crushed and particles larger than 3/8-in. mesh are burned in kilns to provide calcium oxide for the chemical industry. The 3/8-in. screenings are dried and crushed to -16 mesh for use by the glass industry. For those applications requiring a minimum of fines, no more than 10 pct -100 mesh material is allowable in the end product. Hence the need for high-efficiency separation.
