THE total crude production from the Dutch East Indies, and the British Protectorates of Sarawak and Brunei for 1932 is given in the following table: BARRELS BARRELS (42 GAL.) (42 GAL.) Exploitation drilling in the majority of the larger fields was suspended and existing production kept within predetermined limits by beaning. Most of the smaller fields were shut down entirely. The depth of producing levels varies widely in the different fields. Shallow fields with drilling depths to 500 meters (1650 ft.) are still numer-ous as well as those with depths between 500 and 1000 m. (3300 ft.). A few of the newer fields reach greater drilling depths. up to 1600 m. (5250 ft.). The deepest exploration well drilled to date (Djambi field, South Sumatra) reached a depth of 2332 m. (7650 ft.) before abandon-ment in March, 1930. The specific gravities of the various crude oils produced range between 0.65 (86.2° A.P.I.) and 0.95 (17.5° A.P.I.). The lighter crudes have a high gasoline content and fuel oils are derived from the heavier crudes, which usually are rich in paraffin.

The Ti-Pb diagram was investigated in the region 0 to 58 pct Pb and from 500°C to liquidus temperatures. Three reactions were encountered: I—ß?a+Ti Pb at 725 10°C; 2—ß+L?Ti4Pb at 1305+ 10°C; and 3—the possible eutectic L-+Ti,Pb and y between 1200" and 1300°C. LEAD-RICH alloys have been investigated by Nowotny and Pesl,' who used sintered compacts and studied the region from 37.5 to 100 pct Pb by X-ray diffraction analysis. The only phase found in addition to titanium and lead was the hexagonal compound Ti Pb. Alloy systems of lead with metals of the transition group, such as iron, chromium, tungsten, cobalt, nickel, or manganese, generally show little liquid or solid solubility.' Craighead et al.,3 however, indicated that lead is soluble in a and ß titanium to at least 2.1 pct. They also found that approximately 50 pct of the lead added was lost during the arc-melting of Ti-Pb alloys. In the present investigation, are-melting also was used to prepare Ti-Pb alloys and similarly large lead losses were encountered. Experimental Procedure Alloy Preparation: Considerable difficulty was encountered in the melting of the Ti-Pb alloys and a number of experiments were performed before the method described was developed. Alternate layers of lead and titanium were wrapped with titanium sheet and compacted. This "sandwich" was annealed at 300" to 350 °C and was melted according to the procedure described by Cadoff and Nielsen.' Using a low current, 150 amp, and an argon atmosphere, four to eight 10 to 20 sec melts were made on each alloy, with the button being turned over between each melt to insure homogeneity. In the high lead range, the preliminary sintering was found to be of doubtful value and was eliminated. In the region above the nominal composition of 70 wt pct Pb, the alloys prepared in this manner always consolidated into two phases. The outside appeared to be composed entirely of lead and the inside was a Ti-Pb alloy. In order to determine whether this phenomenon was caused by a miscibility gap, master alloys with a nominal composition of 40 wt pct Pb were machined and mixed with various percentages of lead sheet. This mixture was compacted and melted in the same manner as the other alloys. Although these alloys were not homogeneous, they did not show the layering that was observed

Dynamic elastic properties of dry and water-saturated Green River shale samples were computed from compressional- and shear-wave velocity measurements. P- and 5-wave velocity measurements were made in three mutually perpendicular directions with respect to the bedding planes. Measurements were also made in several different directions by varying the angle between the bedding planes and the direction of propagation of the wave for angles of 0, 30, 45, 60 and 909 The oriented samples were subjected to both confining pressure and axial loads, in excess of the confining stress, in the direction of propagation. In general, P- and S-wave velocities increased with increasing stress levels, with a corresponding increase in Young's modulus. Water saturation caused the P-wave velocity to increase and the S-wave velocity to decrease. Elastic moduli decreased upon saturation, except for Pois son's ratio, which increased, indicating some degree of weakening of the material. The samples showed a moderate degree of anisotropy; this was to be expected from the laminated nature and shallow occurrence of Green River shale. INTRODUCTION This paper presents some results of an experimental determination of the elastic coefficients of anisotropic materials (in particular, finely layered rocks and minerals such as Green River shale) from measurements of dilatational and shear-ultrasonic-wave velocities. Ultrasonic techniques have been used extensively in nondestructive testing. Several methods have been proposed by Mcskimmin, 1 and some of these have been used successfully to measure ultrasonic velocities in rocks. Hughes and Cross, 2 Wyllie et al., 3 and Birch 4,5 developed pulse first-arrival techniques for the measurement of dilatational and shear velocities. Williams and Lamb 6 used the method of cancellation of a traveling wave, which was later modified by Myers et al.' and perfected by McSkimmin. 8 Although this method is highly accurate, it has not been used as widely as the pulse-transmission methods recently reported by Jamieson and Hoskins 9 King,10 and Mattaboni and Schreiber. 11 It has been common practice to use some form of crystal transducers, either quartz or ceramic, that has been cut or polarized in different directions in order to generate either compressional or shear waves. However, accurate determination of shear wave velocities has been difficult due to problems that arise in obtaining a pure shear wave from cross-polarized crystals, which usually also generate a small amount of compressional energy. As reported by Gregory, 12 this energy can be seen as a long precursor preceding the sharp break of the shear first arrival. The need for generating pure shear waves led to interest in mode-conversion techniques, which are based upon conversion of the mode of vibration through wave reflection or refraction at a discontinuity. Arenberg13 showed that for certain materials and for certain angles of incidence it is possible to generate pure shear modes by reflection at a boundary. Jamieson and Hoskins 9 used a pyrex glass-air interface for generating pure shear waves, and King 10 used this method successfully for measuring shear-wave velocities in rocks. Gregory l4 arrived at a similar result by refraction of a wave at an aluminum-oil interface. A plane compressional wave, traveling in the oil phase, is incident on the aluminum at an angle larger than the critical angle for compressional waves, and thereby generates a purely transverse, plane-polarized wave in the aluminum. During the last few years methods have been developed that allow the simultaneous determination of shear and compressional velocities in solids.

IN my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in. flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there was any obstruction in. the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. This convinced me that the sulphides were all good " swimmers," and that if,

Bromine is the intermediate member of the halogen family of elements between iodine, a solid: and chlorine, a gas. The name is derived from the Greek "bromos," meaning stench. Bromine is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at room temperatures with a melting point of -7.2" C and a boiling point of 58.78" C. Reddish brown in color, it dissolves easily in water to yield a red solution. Bromine volatilizes at ordinary temperatures to a red vapor that is very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Density of the liquid is 3.12 and gas weighs 7.59 gpl at standard conditions. As the element is highly active, it exists in nature only as bromide compounds. Bromine was discovered by Antoine Jerome Balard in seawater bitterns in 1826 and first prepared in quantity in 1860. Distribution Bromine is widely distributed in nature and compounds occur in solution in natural brines, in seawater, saline lakes, oil and gas well brines, and in evaporite chloride minerals. The concentration of bromine salts ranges from 60- 65 ppm in seawater to several thousand ppm in oil well brines and saline lakes. The distribution of bromine in marine evaporite minerals and in the solutions from which they crystallized was determined many years ago by H. E. Boeke (1 908). Theoretical aspects regarding the geochemistry of bromine have been published in numerous papers (Raup and Mite, 1969). Bromine occurs in solid solution in carnallite and sylvite associated in potash de- posits; in halite in salt beds; salt in oil shales; and in trona deposits. Its presence is useful as a guide in geochemical exploration. The analysis of small amounts of bromides in the presence of large amounts of chlorides is discussed by W. Schwerdtner (1963). Manganese, iron, and iodine may interfere with the determination. Other analytical methods are discussed at length in the literature (Stenger and Atchison, 1964). Sources and Reserves The sources and reserves of bromine, given in [Table 1], appear ample to meet present and foreseeable requirements in all producing countries. With the occurrence of bromine salts in sea-water and other brines, the potential for bromine production is worldwide. It has been estimated that 99% of all commercially recoverable bromine is in the ocean. However, actual subterranean brines having a higher bromine content than seawater will continue to be the preferred sources of bromine for the foreseeable future. Markets and Prices About 17% (1968) of bromine produced is used in its elemental form, with the balance consumed as bromides and bromates. The largest use for bromine is ethylene dibromide which, together with tetraethyl lead, are used as an antiknock additive in gasoline. Tetra-ethyl lead is the antiknock agent. Ethylene dibromide combines with the lead after combustion in the engine to form a volatile com- pound that escapes from the engine with the exhaust gases.

FoR the convenience of those who do not care to enter into the details of this long essay, I begin with a summary of the most important results it presents. The extraction of silver by the lixiviation-process from ores which have been subjected to a chloridizing-roasting, is based upon the fact that silver chloride is easily soluble in solutions of sodium or calcium hyposulphite, and that silver is precipitated from such solutions by an alkaline sulphide, with regeneration of the hyposulphite salts. In case the ore contains lead a large portion of the latter is and dissolved, lead sulphate being soluble in hyposulphite solutions. If, at the same time, copper is present, the sulphides precipitated from the solution, contain silver, copper, and lead, a combination of metals not desirable for subsequent treatment. Mr. E. H. Russell, of Park City, Utah, is the inventor and the patentee in the United States and several foreign countries of a new lixiviation-process, based upon the chemical facts discussed in this paper. Mr. Russell has discovered that lead can be completely separated from a sodium hyposulphite solution, as lead carbonate, by sodium carbonate or purified soda-ash, without precipitating any copper or silver. After decanting the solution from the lead carbonate, silver and copper are obtained from it in the usual way. This method of separating lead prohibits the use of calcium poly-sulphide as a precipitant for the sulphides, because any calcium entering the regenerated lixiviationsolution would also be precipitated as a carbonate with the lead by soda-ash. Hence, a sodium sulphide must be employed. A full investigation has demonstrated that this is by no means detrimental. Sodium sulphide and hyposulphite are more advantageously used in the lixiviation-process than the corresponding calcium-salts. THE works of the Ore Knob Copper Company are situated in the county of Ashe in the northwestern part of the State of North Carolina, about ten miles from the Virginia line, at an elevation of 4600 feet above the sea. The nearest railroad station is at Marion, Smythe County, Virginia, about forty-five miles distant. The roads from the railroad to the works have been constructed by the company for the transportation of their material, and are very hilly, and in certain seasons of the year in bad repair. Transportation is therefore always limited and never easy, although it is done by contract at a very low price. The main difficulty with the transportation is not so much its cost as the fact that it puts a limit to the production of the works. These unfavorable conditions make it necessary for the owners of the mine to smelt their ores and to send to market nothing except the metal, which alone will bear the cost of transportation. The mine was opened previous to 1860, but has only been worked systematically during the last five or six years. The vein is a fissure vein from ten to twenty feet in thickness in the gneiss of the

The semiconductor heterojunction is considered in terms of simple models which may lead to an understanding of move complex heterojunctions. Metallurgical and electrical properties of hetero-junctions aye discussed including the interface structure, energy -band diagram, and carrier transbovt across the interface. It is found that in a heterojunction all mechanisms such as injection, tunneling, and junction recombination found in simple junctions play modified voles. INTERFACES between materials (grain boundaries, the electrical junction between two differently doped materials in a single crystal, the oxide-metal interface, or metal-metal junctions) are of considerable importance in many situations. These various interfaces all have one very fundamental thing in common. Quantum mechanically speaking, the wave functions of the electrons in one material may penetrate the other material but, in general, only to the extent of angstroms. From an electrical point of view the conduction mechanism changes as a current passes through such junctions. In some cases the change is tremendous, in others almost negligible. The interface, then, is the locus of a change of conduction mechanisms. Some of these, particularly in semiconductors, are well-understood. The ordinary p-n junction in a single crystal can be the locus of an injection mechanism or a tunneling process, depending on conditions. The mechanisms are probably best understood in semiconductors because of the possible simplified view of particlelike conduction. The bands are either nearly filled or nearly empty and band overlap is seldom involved. The same fundamentals are probably important in other situations too but they are very difficult to look at naively. Although the simple look at the semiconductor case only gives us a relatively rough picture which must then be refined, the other systems, which involve a more complex situation, immediately are in many ways too difficult. There are too many initial choices of complex systems and therefore it is not possible to be even reasonably certain of any one model. Because of the relative simplicity of semiconductors, their good and controllable structure, and because of the ability to make many measurements on them not normally available to either metals or insulators! they are probably the best understood materials. It is therefore desirable to use them as a tool to further the understanding of interfaces in general. Semiconductor-heterojunction concepts were first proposed by kroemer1 in 1957. This was followed several years later by reports on the fabrication and experimental characteristics of heterojunction structures by Anderson2 and Diedrich and jotten.3 I) THE HETEROJUNCTION STRUCTURE To get down to hardware, when we refer to a semiconductor heterojunction we imply that there exists an intimate contact between different semiconductor materials. We could put two pieces of material together, complete with oxide layers, we could remove the oxides, or we could even melt the interface and hopefully get wetting and a good "bond" on solidifying. In fact we could by some means grow a crystal of one material using the other as a seed. Essentially we are interested only in the last two because they are the simplest to look at analytically. The degree of perfection of fit varies greatly and is reflected somewhat in the arc welder's joint strength. The lattice match of the two materials, their orientation, and so forth. is obviously necessary for a good bond but so is the continuity of any polar bonds which are involved such as in the III-V semiconductors. The mechanical misfit between two similar lattices can be described in terms of edge dislocations. The edge-type dislocations must be very close together for the usual misfit and there must be dislocations for each of several different Burger's vectors in order to produce a lattice match. The .'dangling bonds'' resulting will be involved in producing interface charge. Order of magnitude estimates of the charge density extrapolated from low densities of dislocations in homogeneous materials give 5 x 1013 cm-2 Ge-Si and 1 X 1012 cm-2 Ge-GaAs electronic charges. Edge dislocations also act as very active recombination centers between holes and electrons. One lattice "matching" difficulty usually exists even if two structures have essentially the same lattice constants as they will have different coefficients of therma1 expansion. Thus, on cooling from the usually high temperature of fabrication to room temperature, dislocations are produced, a good fit not existing at both temperatures. In brittle materials this shrinkage may even result in cracking. For the Ge-Si interface the mismatch is about 2 x 10 -6 per degree whereas it is less than 10"7 per degree between germanium and GaAs. The effects of hydrogen content and strain rate on the static tensile and notch-rupture properties of the Ti-3Mn-complex alloy heat-treated to differed strength levels were investigated. The extent of embriulement was found to be proportional to the amount of hydrogen present and the strength to which the specimens were heat-treated. The research suggests the possible necessity of specifying lower hydrogen limits than are now allowed when titanium alloys are heat-treated to higher strengths than are presently used. The research also supports a hypothesis advanced earlier for a mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement. MUCH attention has been focused on the effects of hydrogen in in Most of the published in- formation has dealt with the effects of hydrogen on alloys in the annealed or lowest-strength condition. The work of Kotfila and Erbin3 is one of the few exceptions. In view of the fact that heat-treatments are now being used to produce high strength in titanium alloys,' it is necessary that more attention be given to the effects of hydrogen on these alloys in the heat-treated condition. Research was initiated to establish the effects of hydrogen on the properties of the Ti-3Mn-complex alloy at various strength levels. This research, which supplemented that of Kotfila and Erbin, was started because it was found that high-strength tensile specimens of this alloy were strain-rate sensitive. The essential results of the research are summarized in this paper. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Material for this investigation was a 41/2-in.-diam bar forged from a single commercial heat of the Ti-3Mn-complex alloy having the composition given in Table I. The as-received forging was reduced further by forging at 1750°F to 3/4-in. square bars. About one fourth of this material was vacuum annealed at 1400°F for 24 hr to obtain a base hydrogen content of 25 ppm. The remaining bars were hydrogenated to levels of 90, 140, and 260 ppm in a large Sievert's apparatus in the following manner: Four 3/4-in. square bars, 5 in. long, were placed in the reaction chambzr. The chamber was evacuated, heated to 1400°F, and a measured amount of hydrogen was introduced. When absorbtion was complete, as indicated by the drop in pressure, the reaction tube was cooled and the bars removed. Each batch of bars was then sealed in individual evacuated Vycor containers and heated for 24 hr at 1400°F in order to distribute the hydrogen homogeneously. After vacuum-annealing or hydroge nation, the bars were rolled at a temperature (1400°F) below the ß-transus to 1/2 - in. - diam rounds. Groups of the rolled specimens representing each of the hydrogen levels were given the following heat-treatments: 1) One hr at 1300°F, water-quenched. 2) One hr at 1300°F, water-quenched, and aged 8 hr at 1100°F. 3) One hr at 1300°F, water-quenched, and aged 4 hr at 1000°F. 4) One hr at 1300°F, water-quenched, and aged 48hr at 800°F. Heat-treated bars were machined into standard 0.250-in.-diam tensile specimens having 1-in. gage lengths. Throughout the processing and testing of this material, hydrogen analyses were made by vacuum-fusion methods to check for accuracy of hydrogen additions, homogeneity, and possible losses during processing. A summary of these analyses is given in Table II It may be seen that the actual hydrogen contents were reasonably close to the desired levels. The apparent activation energy, U, JOY plastic deformation of aluminium, copper, and gold single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum was found to he dependent upon surface condition. At low strains, the value for U for aluminum single crystals was 4200 cal per mole ; however, this value decreased to 920 cal per mole when the specimens were polished during the test at a rate of 50 X 10-5 win-1 The activated volume also was found to increase with the rate of metal removal. That the surface plays an important role in plastic-deformation processes has been adequately demonstrated.1-4 Of particular interest at this time are the observations4 that the creep rate of single crystals of fee metals is increased markedly when specimens are polished during the deformation process. These observations were interpreted in terms of a dislocation debris layer at the surface regions of the crystal. This layer, which appears to be a region containing a high concentration of dislocations or segments of dislocations, not only will impede the egress of dislocations on the primary slip system, but will also provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. By this means, a stress which opposes the motion of dislocations will be generated. It is considered that this stress must be taken into account in any theory which describes the plastic-deformation process. Although a detailed dislocation model cannot be given at this time, it may be stated that the stresses opposing the motion of dislocations arise from the dislocations in the debris layer, Ts, and ti due to the resistance to motion imposed by internal obstacles such as Lomer-Cottrell barriers, subgrain and grain boundaries, forest dislocations, and so forth, as well as the resistance due to the presence of jogs on dislocations and the interaction of the stress fields of dislocations, and so forth. In essence, we have added an additional term, ts, to the usual form of the equation T = Ta- Tb, where Tb is the back stress due to the various types of obstacles which impede the motion of dislocation. Accordingly, the net stress, t, acting on a dislocation may be written as where Ta is the applied shear stress. For deformation which occurs by a thermally activated process5,8 ?=Ae-u/kT = A e(u,-VT)/kT [2] and U = Uo- Vt PI where U = activation energy for plastic flow, y = shear strain rate, Uo = activated energy for plastic deformation in the absence of stress and depends upon the particular deformation process, V = activated volume, k = Boltzmann constant, T = temperature, OK, and A = frequency factor. From Eqs. [I] and [3], U = Uo- V(Ta - Ti - TS) [4] and it is seen that if Ts decreases, the activation energy, U, must decrease if V remains constant. However, as will be shown, V is a function of the surface conditions. In their work on aluminum, Lytton and coworkers7 reported that at low strains the activation energy was 3400 cal per mole and at high strains it was 28,000 cal per mole. The lower value was interpreted in terms of the energy necessary to overcome the Peierls force, while the higher value was associated with the energy necessary for dislocations to move by a cross-slip process. It will be shown that the lower activation energy is associated with the surface debris layer rather than with the Peierls force. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals having a nominal cross section of 1/8 in. and a 3-in. gage length were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. THE transformation temperature of hafnium from hcp to bcc is 1750° + 20 °C in contrast to previously published values by Duwez and fast2 which are believed inaccurate. The Bureau of Mines determined this value by measuring the temperatures at which a sudden decrease was observed in the electrical resistance of hafnium alloys containing up to 18 at. pct Zr, and then extrapolating the temperatures to 0 pct Zr. Duwez1 previously reported a transformation temperature of 1310°C, obtained by use of a rapid-cooling thermal-analysis technique. Later, Fast2 published a much higher value of 1950° 100°C based upon: a) his own determination of 1690°C for the beginning of the transformation range for hafnium containing 5.7 at. pct Zr, and b) his belief that lattice parameters reported3 for Duwez' hafnium indicated i contained 19 at. pct Zr and that the 1310°C value should be associated with that composition. Russell4 subsequently stated that Duwez and Fast probably were reporting their lattice parameters in different units and reassigned a value of 6.0 at. pct Zr to Duwez' hafnium. If this assumption were true, Duwez' hafnium was of approximately the same purity as Fast's, but his transformation value was considerably lower. The reason for this divergence is not known. Fast's value for hafnium containing 5.7 at. pct Zr agrees well with our data. McGeary5 determined a transformation value of 1660°C by metallographic examination of heat-treated specimens, but the zirconium content of his hafnium was not definitely established. The specimens used in this investigation were 1/8-in.-diam rods 6 1/2 in. long, fabricated by hot-swaging bars cut from arc-melted buttons. In this paper it will be my endeavor to trace the development of the marine engine and its appurtenances, and the general progress that has taken place in marine engineering generally during the past fifteen years, rather with the object of attributing much of it to the successful efforts of the makers of iron and steel, thereby rendering my thanks to them for the valuable service they have contributed to my profession, than to recount what has been achieved by the skill, ability and perseverance of my colleagues in shipbuilding and engineering. The engineer has been at all times dependent on the ironmaster, and on more than one occasion his progress has been barred by the inability of the latter to overcome some obstacle to success in his manufacture. But on the other hand, it is equally true that the ironmaster has often been ahead of the engineer, and has been prepared, long beforehand, to supply that which would make a success for the marine engineer if he would avail himself of it.

IN ITS capacity for service to the public the oil industry is truly gargantuan. But it is only in this respect that the industry is the voracious, many-headed, many-armed and many-handed creature it has been so often painted by those who know it not too intimately and only from the outside. Contrasted sharply with the immensity of the service rendered is the relatively modest share of the national income which has gone to those who provided the tools and the mental and manual labor with which the service was performed. No doubt the relative meagreness of the re- ward was the result of a combination of fortuitous circumstances respecting the nature and accessibility of the industry's raw material and the extensive development and application of the most advanced technology, spurred by an intense competition.

The Alaska Gastineau Mining Co.'s mine is located at Perseverance, about 4 mi. east of Juheau, Alaska. Its property consists of a group of claims, the lode system traversing these claims for a distance of 11,000 ft. (3352 m.). It is shown in Fig. 1. The ore deposits occur in what is known as the Juneau gold belt. This gold belt can be traced for about 50 mi. northwest of Juneau and 40 mi. southeast. It consists of a single band, several hundred feet wide, in which stringers and veins of quartz, carrying gold, occur in a slate formation near its contact with some altered volcanic rock known as greenstone. The Perseverance orebody consists of stringer lodes, having a strike northwest and southeast, dipping about 60° to the northeast. These

THE occurrence of such a large amount of gold in the Hartsel granite, even though the surmised existence of similar areas is not new, brings freshly to mind the pegmatite type of magmatic differentiation lately brought again to attention by occurrences at Silver Peak, Nev., described by Spurr; and in Alaska, described by both Spurr and Brooks. In both localities graunitic rocks or dikes are thought to pass into metalliferous quartz-veins. An interesting association in this connection is the occurrence of diamonds in residual pegmatitic clay of San Juao de Chapado, Brazil, described by Derby :1 (P. 142) "Bodies of pegmatite are quite common in the older rocks of Brazil, both in the. diamond regions and elsewhere, occurring not only in the gneiss and granite, but in the schistose series as well. Those that have been examined are dike-like in their mode of occurrence and granitic in composition." (P. 143) "The question of the eruptive or secretionary origin of pegmatites has long been a subject of discussion among geologists. . . . The recent studies . . . seem to have clearly established that most if not all of them are essentially eruptive masses, though possibly modified in some way by aqueous agencies. Even before becoming acquainted with the literature of the subject this view had seemed to me to be the only acceptable one as regards the typical pegmatites of Brazil." What is pegmatite ? J. F. Kemp says ". . . veins or dikes-it is an open question which is the more correct term-are met formed of very coarsely crystalline aggregates of the same minerals that constitute granite. These are called pegmatite and in them is the home of graphic granite, the curious intergrowth of quartz and feldspar, such that a cross fracture of the blades of quartz suggests cuneiform characters. . . . In regard to the larger veins or dikes it seems improbable that true igneous fusion could have afforded such coarsely crystalline aggregates, and so we are forced to assume such abundance of steam and other vapors, i.e, mineralizers, as to almost, if not quite, imply solution."
