O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar as propriedades em blocos de cerâmica vermelha. O diferencial e originalidade em relação ao que já existe em termos científicos são as evidencias de que gradientes de umidade são mais significativos em secagem rápida o que provoca a presença de tensões residuais, como também em termos da porosidade em temperaturas de queima diferentes e conformação sob condições de presença e ausência de vácuo na produção dos blocos. Nestes casos, danos estruturais como trincas, deformações e fraturas podem surgir no produto final ou durante o carregamento de serviço devido à diminuição dos valores de resistência mecânica. Os resultados evidenciam que corpos de prova submetidos à secagem rápida em comparação a secagem lenta, bem como a diminuição da temperatura de queima e ausência de vácuo durante o processo produtivo, decrescem a propriedade mecânica citada..

Hydro generators installed in Itaipu Binacional power plant with 824/737 MVA rated output power (50/60 Hz) belong to the largest ones in the world. Among many unique features the generators are equipped with the largest hydrodynamic thrust bearings ever built (external diameter 5200 mm, axial load equals approximately 3600 t). This paper is an attempt to propose a new thrust bearing design with the use of the state-of-the-art technologies and simulation techniques that demonstrate a reduction of friction power losses generated by the thrust bearing. This paper is divided into two parts. Within the first one the original thrust bearing design which was implemented in the generators is described. Related calculation results based on a thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) calculation software used by Alstom will be presented. A comparison between measurement results gathered in the 1980’s is given. In the second part a potential solution of a more beneficial bearing design is described. The proposed thrust bearing design modification is an implementation of Alstom’s PolypadTM coating. This modern polymer (PEEK) coating material has already been used by Alstom in projects around the world for many years. This coating allows pushing the operating parameters limits toward higher temperatures and lower oil film thicknesses far beyond the limits known for the conventional bearing materials.

Currently the industries of paint have directed their efforts on cleaner production of products that provide effective performance in corrosion protection of metallic materials. This work search introduce a new alternative of organic coating, without the presence of hazardous metals and replace equipments commercials used method of anodic protection for protection of oxidized metals. From this it, was produced Smart Paint (SP), consisting of Paint Acrylic Commercial (PAC) mixed the 1 % of binder, compound by the conducting polymer, Polyaniline Emeraldine Base (PAni EB) and plasticizer 4-chloro-3-methylphenol. The SP and PAC were applied to plates of carbon steel AISI 1010, with the aid of dip coat technique and then were subjected to drying for 48 h. The SP was characterized by thermals and physicochemical analyzes in order to verify possible changes in chemical properties of the ink produced, beyond perform electrochemical tests of Open Circuit Potential and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, employing equipment Potentiostat/Galvanostat Autolab PGSTAT302 Ecochemie, and aqueous 2 mol.L-1 of H2SO4. The results obtained allow us to state that the plasticizer does not alter the electrochemical properties of PAni and application of binder PAni EB to PAC does not alter the physicochemical properties of commercial coating. The binder PAni EB adds to PAC the capacity to induce the formation or maintenance of protective oxides in oxidizable metals submitted to harsh environments, method known as anodic corrosion protection.

Over the last 25 years the thin slab casting and rolling process has been gaining a major market share in the production of hot rolled strip, progressively eroding the areas previously of exclusive domain of conventional mills. This is mainly thanks to the competitiveness of the process over conventional ones, and to the growing ability of this technology to cover the majority of market niches, well beyond the boundaries of the commodity market. After having significantly contributed to the continuous expansion of this production mode and after an extensive campaign of theoretical research and physical testing in reference plants, Danieli has progressively developed over the years a new generation of thin slab casting and rolling layout, marking a new phase in the evolution of this process. The new step-ahead is epitomized by the name QSP-DUE. This configuration belongs to the Quality Strip Production (QSP) family, which is Danieli’s strip-quality-oriented thin slab based plants. The innovative features of the process are embodied in the acronym DUE, which stands for Danieli Universal Endless (Danieli patented technology – US patent n. 8087449, January 3rd, 2012). What makes this new concept different is the ability of “universal” rolling modes thanks to the fact that, now, within one single plant it is possible to perform coil-to-coil, semi-endless and endless rolling modes, making this plant a major technology innovation compared to the previous generation.

O presente trabalho buscou apresentar os resultados e benefícios oriundos da implantação de uma ferramenta de gestão logística denominada CCL – Centro de Controle Logístico na operação logística do minério de ferro na Gerdau, que por sua vez é caracterizada pela movimentação utilizando predominantemente o transporte rodoviário. Os resultados do trabalho apontam para obtenção da eficiência da gestão logística na operação de minério de ferro, mediante integração de sistemas de informação a uma central que consolida todos os dados gerando informações, ora em tempo real permitindo tomadas de decisão imediata, intervenção na operação e alteração de prioridades e, ora através da geração de KPIs permitindo uma visão global do sistema logístico que engloba a operação em referência. Além disso, os painéis gerenciais oferecidos a partir do CCL são chaves no controle e gestão do fluxo logístico da operação. Por fim, um dos maiores ganhos obtidos é o controle total da operação de transportes rodoviário, que por sua vez é realizada através de transportadores contratados, onde a Gerdau passou a ter acesso à visão geral dos aspectos operacionais e frota disponibilizada.

The high temperature erosion of Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) is one of the main factors that define the lifespan in gas turbine components as it is considered the second source of failure of hot path components in power and propulsion turbine operation. The worn Top Coat (TC) surface in components such as first stage turbine blades affects the turbine efficiency due to energy losses and the increment in heat transfer to substrate. The first part of this work consists in describing a HTE test facility developed to emulate the damage conditions found in a number of components of gas turbines; in this testing machine, the samples were exposed to combustion gases moving at velocities close to 1.5 Mach and temperatures of 1100°C. The second part consists in the characterization of liners and first stage turbine blades of a GE7FA gas turbine used for power generation. The last part deal whit correlation of the features of TC’s worn surfaces with the erosion conditions and the dominant degradation mechanisms between test samples and turbine components were compared.

A thyssenkrupp CSA (TKCSA), Rio de Janeiro, possui dois Altos-Fornos. Ambos iniciaram operação em 2010, Alto-Forno 01 em 13/07/2010 e Alto-Forno 02 em 06/12/2010. Em Dezembro de 2014, foram verificados problemas de deslocamento dos staves de ferro fundido e deformação dos staves de cobre. Analisando estes eventos foi identificado quebra dos parafusos de fixação dos staves de ferro fundido na carcaça. O trabalho apresenta histórico destes acontecimentos, as intervenções realizadas como meio de preservar a integridade e prolongar a vida útil dos Altos-Fornos e os resultados obtidos após retirada de água do interior do mesmo.

Os aços SAE J403 1045, SAE J403 1075 e DIN 100CrV2 são aplicados em diferentes setores industriais graças às diferentes propriedades que podem ser alcançadas através de tratamentos térmicos. Este trabalho visou caracterizar e descrever as fases formadas nos aços SAE J403 1045, SAE J403 1075 e DIN 100CrV2 após tratamentos térmicos de têmpera, normalização e recozimento pleno.

A seleção adequada da taxa de produção de um empreendimento mineiro tem influência direta na possibilidade de sucesso do projeto, assim como a definição do porte e quantidade de equipamentos empregados em sua operação influenciam a maximização do Valor Presente Líquido (VPL). Nesse processo, a análise de risco na variável de saída aliada à análise de sensibilidade fornece resultados mais consistentes, visto que considera os riscos e incertezas de um projeto ao longo de sua vida útil. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a operação em uma mina de agregados a partir da consideração de quatro diferentes conjuntos escavadeira-caminhões através do método do Valor Anual Uniforme Equivalente (VAUE), comparando-o com o método do VPL. Foram revistas as avaliações econômicas efetuadas em estudo anterior, no qual foi obtido o VPL e efetuadas as Análises de Risco e Sensibilidade em cada um dos cenários, e foi acrescida à análise a metodologia do VAUE, sendo esta também submetida à análise probabilística. Foi verificado o desempenho de cada escavadeira e seus correspondentes caminhões para diferentes taxas de produção em ambas as metodologias, permitindo concluir que, para um mesmo número de unidades de transporte e contanto que a taxa de produção requerida seja possível, quanto menor o porte do equipamento, mais econômico é o cenário. Por outro lado, quanto maior a taxa de produção do empreendimento, mais rentável este será.

Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) can be used to monitor electrostatic charges on the surfaces of materials. In this paper, we describe the use of KPFM to evaluate the electrostatic effect induced by silver nanoparticles incorporated as clusters in diamond-like carbon (DLC) films, before and after scratching. The results are compared to those obtained for DLC films without silver nanoparticles. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the DLC signature, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to confirm the presence of silver in the film. The morphology of the DLC film containing silver was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The findings suggest that the incorporation of silver nanoparticles in amorphous materials could offer new options for electrostatic energy storage on the surfaces of these materials.

A point of great importance in the cold rolling process for automotive sheet is the cleanliness of the strip, particularly critical in case of batch annealing with no degreasing line or inefficient cleaning before continuous lines. In this specific cases, pollution of the strip surface could be prohibitive when rolling in the early stands of tandem mill with conventional forged work rolls as ground. The strip cleanliness strongly deteriorates during rolling particularly with high roughness rolls: iron fines are generated at the strip surface due to friction and stick on the sheet. It is well known that chrome plating on ground forged rolls in the early stands improve the strip cleanliness. This paper summarizes the results of 3D surface roughness topography studies on forged work rolls, with and without chrome plating, combined with sheet cleanliness measurement during rolling. It shows that a well determined topography has to be obtained on the work rolls used in early stands in order to roll in the mixed lubrication regime, as described by the Stribeck curve, minimizing the friction coefficient and therefore optimizing the cleanliness of the rolled sheet. The main roll roughness parameters to take into account for that purpose are the roughness level Sa, and even more, the Kurtosis parameters Sk, Spk, Svk and Ssk. The ideal surface morphology promotes deep valleys to the detriment of peaks, leading to a roll surface capable of retaining/trapping oil in the valleys, while peaks are minimized, thus reducing the friction in the roll bite and the amount of iron fines produced. To achieve this objective, new grinding wheel technologies are currently developed, in dialogue with wheel manufacturers, to create such ideal morphology of roughness well adapted to HSS forged rolls.

Uma marcha estável do alto-forno (AF) está ligada à consistência das propriedades químicas, físicas e metalúrgicas das suas matérias-primas (MP), especialmente, as do coque. As propriedades do coque são reflexos das propriedades dos carvões que lhe deram origem. Em termos de propriedades ligadas à natureza do carvão, a qualidade do coque é bastante influenciada pelo rank dos carvões, que compuseram sua mistura, ou seja, quantidades de macerais reativos e inertes, bem como suas propriedades coqueificantes, que é, exatamente, a habilidade inerente aos carvões aglutinantes de quando aquecido, amolecer, tornar-se plástico e solidificar em uma massa coerente. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho se propõe a evidenciar as mudanças no modelo de britagem de carvões da Gerdau Ouro Branco, bem como a operacionalização do padrão criado. Após a implantação, verificou-se a elevação de 1.8% em DI.

Um importante problema das indústrias de fabricação de aço, decorrentes do uso de sucata de aço, é o de recuperação dos metais contidos nos pós e lamas produzidos nos fornos elétricos a arco (FEA) e nos conversores LD/FOB. Cerca de 10 a 20 kg de pó por tonelada de aço são gerados nos Fornos Elétricos a Arco, considerados resíduos perigosos pelos órgãos fiscalizadores (classe ? - material perigoso/NBR). Vários processos, utilizando tecnologias distintas (pirometalúrgicas e hidrometalúrgicas), buscam a recuperação técnico-econômica principalmente do Fe e do Zn, contidos nesses resíduos. Neste contexto, estudos básicos sobre a redução carbotérmica dos constituintes dos pós de aciaria, permanecem sob estudo. O presente trabalho foca a redução de ferrita de zinco gerada em laboratório, principal composto de zinco presente nos pós de aciaria, por meio de CO puro e misturas CO-CO2. A fenomenologia da redução considera a decomposição prévia seguida de reduções simultâneas, bem como as significativas influencias da temperatura, do tempo e do teor de CO.

Recently steel manufacturers have significantly focused their attention on safety and working conditions thanks to new labour laws, comprehensive operators’ knowledge and increased company social responsibility. Even with a reduced budget, investments on safety are now widely approved. Mill constructors aim at developing upgraded solutions to comply with these new requirements. In some cases mill constructors can even anticipate customers’ requests and consequently put into the market innovative solutions. In this text we will analyze some advanced solutions developed by Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche Spa - the leading company in long-product rolling mills - aimed at improving working conditions on wire-rod block settings. In particular, we will focus on rolling guides installed on fast-finishing blocks and on servo-assisted device for rolling rings changing. In fact, this equipment has shown effective benefits on our test plants and has mainly cut out the tendency of the personnel to be absent due to backache. This paper will first present standard working conditions, will then introduce the newest equipment developed by Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche Spa, will analyze its operation and finally will describe in detail the benefits that can be reached with its use.

A mathematical model of heat transfer and solidification for a continuous casting of round billets was developed. The water flux density of the secondary cooling zone was experimentally measured, using an apparatus in industrial scale with two types of nozzles, flat jet and full cone jet. The profiles of water distribution were applied on the mathematical model. The results showed that the water distribution is not uniform in both longitudinal and angular directions owing to the unevenness of the spray and to the curvature effect of the round billet. This non-uniformity causes important variation of the heat transfer coefficients and superficial temperature of the billet, especially in the first cooling zones, where the temperature is higher. The mathematical model was used to simulate a change of nozzle type in the first cooling zone. The results showed that the heat flux and superficial temperature variations were reduced with a full cone jet nozzle in comparison with the flat jet nozzles.

A finite element modeling approach was developed to study adhesion phenomena during the unidirectional contact between a two-dimensional plane-strain square and a flat slab. Surfaces were metallic or ceramic, different pairs of materials were analyzed and their adhesion was considered by means of a FORTRAN subroutine (DLOAD), which was connected with commercial finite element code Abaqus and provided surface attractive forces based on the Lennard-Jones interatomic potential. Adhesive loads were considered both during approximation and separation of the surfaces. During the separation step, material transfer between surfaces, due to adhesion, was modeled by means of damage initiation and propagation at the flat slab. The parameters considered in the simulations were normal load, chemical affinity and system size and the different conditions were analyzed by comparison of the interaction forces during approach and withdrawal. This work also presents detailed descriptions of: (i) the evolution of energy dissipation due to adhesion hysteresis, (ii) the formation-growth-breakage of adhesive junctions and (iii) the evolution of stress distribution during the process. Results have indicated that chemical affinity between the bodies in contact is more relevant for adhesion than the applied load. Besides, smaller asperities are less prone to promote adhesive wear, but they may be subjected to high stress concentration effects.

The Pickling Line Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM) from Ternium Pesquería started in 2013. It is a line with 5 stands, 6 high; focused mainly on the exposed automotive market, with a wide spread of products with high quality requirements. In addition the operational continuity is very important, for this, one of the greatest challenges is to ensure operational discipline, the order of production, the quality of the input (hot band), operational interruptions, equipment failure, breakage of strip in the mill, among others. In relation to this, it has a strong impact on productivity, customer compliance, damage to equipment, rolls, safety, quality, reprocessing among others. Here is present the results obtained in the project "decrease of strip breaks" which focused on several fronts, discipline in the order of production, previous review of raw material in surface and dimensional defects with automatic inspection equipment in the hot mill, as well as in PLTCM, generation of logic in the redundant systems of alerts and prevention to avoid or minimize strip breaks that were high impact in the past. All these multidisciplinary actions led as a whole to a significant improvement in the performance indicators of the PLTCM, in productivity, compliance, reprocessing and quality in the cold rolled mill.

With the increasing use of ornamental rocks, mainly in civil construction, sundry problems were identified in relation to rocks cutting, such as efficiency in the cutting process and rock quality lumber. In recent years several composites have been developed to solve these problems. In this context, the study of the binomial matrix metal-diamond interaction is of paramount importance for the development of new composite materials to improve the efficiency of the cutting tool. The diamond impregnated matrix metal often reveals a reaction between the diamond surface and the matrix. Besides the mechanical connection, chemical reactions can sometimes occur. Therefore, this study aims to assess the achievement of diamond composites in the system Fe / Cu / Ni / Sn via powder metallurgy, with added CRB2. Analyzes have been performed to characterize chemical / physical and mechanical. The results have showed that addition of CRB2 promote significant changes in the properties of composites, especially in wear resistance and fracture toughness. Furthermore, the presence of the composite CRB2 causes a significant improvement in thermal stability.

The use of tailings for the synthesis of new materials is a worldwide concern today. This paper approaches the utilization of tailings of soapstone (steatite) in order to produce ceramics. The results show that the addition of soapstone in a ratio over 20% in the ceramic mass has enhanced the bending resistance of the ceramic samples when they were fired at temperatures of 900°C or 1000°C.
