No presente trabalho foi feito um estudo do escoamento multifásico do desgaseificador RH através do no sistema água/óleo/ar. A modelagem matemática do escoamento fluidodinâmico foi feito utilizando a abordagem de dois fluidos Euleriana-Euleriana. No estudo foi empregado o modelamento matemático para simular as vazões empregadas na indústria para prever o comportamento da escória. Os experimentos foram feitos utilizando o modelo físico do desgaseificador RH da USIMINAS nas escalas de 1:5. Através de filmagens utilizando câmera comum e cálculos de espessura do óleo pôde-se validar os resultados obtidos no modelamento matemático. Foi determinado que na camada de óleo entre a panela e as pernas de descida e de subida do desgaseificador RH foram as regiões que possuem a menor espessura da camada de óleo. Os resultados apontaram que a espessura do óleo entre a perna de subida e a panela a espessura do óleo são as menores e decrescem à medida que a vazão de gás aumenta.

There are a few ways to impact the capacity of a reciprocating compressor, by altering suction and discharge pressure and recirculation. By reducing the pressure drop in the section before the compressor it is possible to provide a higher suction pressure and subsequently achieve a higher compressor flow rate. The increase in the suction pressure while maintaining the discharge pressure reduced the demanded compressor Head. When considering oxygen compressors it is necessary to cautiously evaluate the safety norms and parameters due to the risk of explosions and fires due to high oxygen velocity.

Sinter maximization in the blast furnaces charge has proven to be the most economically viable way to produce pig iron at Usiminas. This fact has led the company to develop projects aimed at increasing the production of sintering. In this context, the present work shows the recent experience of Sintering Machines 1 and 2 drum mixer exchanging contributing to the increase of operational productivity due to the optimization of the original design. For 13 days was the replacement of the original drum installed in 1974 by a new drum with improvements in the design of the internal and the sprinkling water system. The improvements contributed to the effective formation of micro-pellets and, as a result, increased productivity of Sinter Machines. Several aspects of the project are presented: engineering, planning, safety, manufacturing, technical quality, schedule and a comparison between the parameters of the equipment operation before and after the implantation

Comparative study between standard and BigFLUX matrices for high intensity magnetic separation pre-concentration (WHIMS) stage for iron ore. The evaluation was carried out on GAUSTEC’s pilot equipment for samples from Viga Mine’s operation. Samples in different feed iron content on rougher stage were evaluated in 46 experiments with matrix variation. The analisys compared chemistry, mass recovery and metallurgical recovery results to define the most efficient matrix to use in a pre-concentration stage.

Whereas only a handful of decades ago, typical blast furnace working volumes were below 1000 m³, such furnaces are currently designated compact or even mini blast furnaces. For certain business cases, however, small furnace sizes remain an attractive option. Decades ago, this size blast furnace would have produced a maximum of 0.3 Mtpa with its 600 m³ working volume over a campaign of up to four years. The current state of technology and operational know–how will allow a similarly sized furnace to produce over 0.7 Mtpa while achieving the multiple decade campaigns that have become familiar to steel producers in full sized operations. This level of productivity, but especially the reliability and supply security associated with mature technology, allows for integration into minimills or taking a first step towards a full scale BF–BOF integrated mill. Steel producers considering such scenarios, which are typically attractive for emerging economies, are confronted with fundamental decisions, one of which is for the technological basis for the compact or mini blast furnace to be included in the plant. This article addresses some of these decisions from an operations–based perspective. A small number of case studies is included.

This paper shows an evaluation about effect of dispersant sodium silicate along to limestone, in the form of pulp, on the cold agglomeration process for iron ore sintering. Before that, it was verified the effect of pH, solids content and amount of dispersant on the stability of the system (limestone, water and sodium silicate). It was found that the lower the solids content, the more alkaline pH and the amount of sodium silicate equal to 20 l for each 1t of limestone, was the level of dispersion of the system. The influence of the limestone pulp with dispersant depended on the granulometry of the ore mixture and the type of technological route. For the thinner type (42,8% <0.15mm), the limestone pulp with dispersant reduced the resistance of the adherent layer of the cold agglomerates, regardless of the technological route. However, for the coarser type (24,7% <0.15mm), the limestone pulp with dispersant increased the average size of the aggregates, preserving the resistance of the adherent layer when manufacturing with two intensive mixers in series.

In the production of iron ore pellets, one of the factors that strongly influence the cost of ore-pellet processing is the specific consumption of natural gas that occurs during the thermal processing stage of the pellets. The filtration process is the step where the adequacy of the moisture percentage of the retained pulp occurs, so that subsequently there is the processing in the subsequent stages of the pellet formation and hardening of pellets. The water contained in the raw pellet is withdrawn at the stage of thermal processing. For this purpose, the literature indicates the demand of 600 Kcal/kg of water for the heating and vaporization of the moisture of raw pellets. The statistical analysis of the performance data of a pelletizing plant showed that for each decrement of 0.1% of water in the retained pulp is equivalent to the reduction of 0.091 Nm3 in the consumption of natural gas per tonne of pellets produced. Thus, the proper performance of the filtration stage is essential to reduce the percentage of pulp moisture retained and consequently to increase the energy efficiency of the pelletizing furnaces. The aim of this article is to present the main steps in conducting a work to increase the filtration performance to reduce the percentage of retained pulp moisture and the positive impacts on the specific natural gas consumption of a plant Pelletizing.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização mecânica de tubetes de papelão para a utilização em abrigos emergenciais.

Nowadays the biodiesel use is obligate in Brazil, in order to reduce the emissions of fuel burn. However, it is important to analyze which percentage of biodiesel is necessary to keep or improve the lubricant action of fuel for diesel engine, as well which kind of biodiesel give better performance. Therefore, this work aims to analyze the parameters that keep the lubricant action of biofuels, by using the Box-Behnken design type to optimize them. In this design was evaluated the input parameters: the type of the biodiesel (soybean, sunflower and palm), the concentration (5%, 20% and 100%) and the temperature of contact (25°C, 40°C and 60°C). The analyzed output parameters were the percentage of film formation, coefficient of friction, wear scar diameter (WSD) of ball, these output parameters were obtained by HFRR tribometer and they were analyzed applying response surface methodology. With this methodology was possible to determine the simultaneous influence and the interactions between two or more independent variables investigated. The response surfaces generated for the coefficients of friction, WSD, film formation showed a higher lubricant action for higher levels of concentration of biodiesel. An increase in lubricant action was found to high and intermediate temperature.

Os pós ou lamas de aciaria gerados nos sistemas de despoeiramento dos gases de exaustão do conversor LD têm papel relevante entre os coprodutos siderúrgicos devido às suas significativas gerações, dificuldades no manuseio e acondicionamento e expressivo custo para processamento e/ou disposição. Em contrapartida, o elevado teor de ferro que possuem lhes garantem um potencial de substituição dos materiais primários nos processos metalúrgicos. Um método desenvolvido para a reciclagem do pó de aciaria LD foi a aglomeração a frio via briquetagem, para utilização como refrigerante no conversor LD. O efeito refrigerante do minério de ferro é cerca de três vezes superior ao da sucata de aço. Os briquetes de pó de aciaria LD contém ferro em diferentes estágios de oxidação e assim, seu poder refrigerante se situa em uma condição intermediária. Neste trabalho são avaliados, teórica e operacionalmente, o efeito refrigerante dos briquetes de pó de aciaria em comparação com outros refrigerantes. Considerando que a sucata tem um poder refrigerante de 340 kcal/kg, constatou-se que o poder refrigerante dos briquetes é cerca de 1,8 vezes superior ao da sucata e o poder refrigerante das pelotas é 2,8 vezes superior ao da sucata.

Once installed rolling mills can look forward to a long life. Around 40% of the 140 conventional hot strip mills presently in operation were built between 1960 and 1970. 17 of the 29 CSP®-plants were commissioned before the year 2000 and have automation platforms that are obsolete and/or have outdated rolling technology. Keeping pace with the market requirements is an ongoing challenge for producers of flat steel. It is a real balancing act keeping production facilities performing at necessary levels, safeguarding the investment and keeping outage periods to a minimum. To overcome these demanding factors and strike the right balance allowing for the production of higher grade steel that meets the current market price the installation of mechanical equipment as well as automation platforms and process technology must meet the latest technology standards. Being discussed in this paper are the different motives for modernizations along with their impact on project handling and commissioning philosophies. Experience gained during recent modernization projects in the field of flat steel rolling relating to Steckel / plate mills or current CSP® modernizations will be shared and demonstrate that each modernization has its own individual solution. Specific strategies are explained to help optimize production, increase plant agility and maximize the return on investment.

Gontermann-Peipers GmbH (GP) Germany developed a new, high alloyed steel grade for the manufacturing of back-up rolls. The advanced GP double pour casting processes provide highest flexibility in being quite open in rolls work layer chemistry and hence microstructure with no influence on core respectively neck properties. GP took the process advantage to provide a brand new back-up roll grade with remarkably reduced roll wear while operating with textured work rolls. In the meantime several successful trials have been made with this new roll grade on different Skin Pass Mills. As a result the performance of back-up roll and thus availability of mill will be improved while specific costs for mill will drop. This quite new back-up roll grade has recently been launched. As next step increasing the field of applications is under progress.

The SMS group has developed the ultrasound technology “HD scan” for inspection of the internal quality of as-cast products. This method of sample analysis requires less preparation work and is safer than the current, most common technique of etching and/or sulphur printing. Furthermore, this technology offers a three-dimensional view into the sample of the cast product and thus more representative information for a better quality evaluation. The internal quality evaluation can be performed automatically and objectively by software based on clear statistical methods. A quantitative centerline segregation rating can be assigned to each sample, based on the size and distribution of segregates detected by the unit. Internal crack statistic (length, position, orientation, etc.) and narrow side profile can also be measured. Grain macrostructure can also be visualized which allows for a potential optimization of casting parameters like strand cooling, soft reduction or electromagnetic stirring. The accuracy of the new method was proven by parallel metallographic investigations of more than 100 samples of different steel grades and sample shapes. Automatic defect evaluation and classification was compared against macroetching results. It was found that HD scan identified more defects and the visualization of the macro structure could be performed in more cases than with macro etching. All tests, comparisons, further developments and analyses for various steel producers and steel treatment companies have been conducted at the HD scan unit, located at the SMS group headquarters in Düsseldorf, Germany (Figure 1). Based on the results, SMS group has designed a unit which can be used in industrial scale.

Laboratórios de ensaios têm buscado implementar Sistemas de Gestão da Qualidade baseados na norma ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025 e procurado a acreditação de seus ensaios. A norma ASTM E517 estabelece um método de ensaio para a determinação do índice de anisotropia plástica de metais laminados, um importante parâmetro em processos de conformação mecânica por estampagem. Atualmente nenhum laboratório é acreditado pelo Inmetro na realização desse ensaio. Assim, o Laboratório de Metalurgia Física (LAMEF) da UFRGS optou por aumentar seu escopo de acreditação para abranger esse ensaio. O objetivo do trabalho é apresentar as adequações gerenciais e técnicas ao Sistema da Qualidade existente para a extensão de escopo, assim como as não conformidades encontradas e os pontos fortes para obtenção da acreditação junto ao Inmetro.

A compreensão do comportamento de materiais soldados é de extrema importância para a produção de materiais resistentes mecanicamente e, também, à corrosão. Nesse contexto, esse trabalho tem por objetivo caracterizar metalurgicamente a microestrutura resultante do aço inoxidável usado como revestimento dissimilar em soldagem de chapas de aço carbono. Utilizaram-se duas chapas de aço carbono como metal base e o revestimento dissimilar de aço inoxidável no cordão de solda. O processo de soldagem utilizado foi o de Arco Submerso (SAW) e realizaram-se os ensaios de tração e dureza, além de observação da microestrutura por microscopia ótica. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que o revestimento dissimilar no cordão de solda proporcionou valores elevados de residência à tração. Além disso, os valores de dureza sugerem que o material estudado pode ser aplicado em ambientes de caráter corrosivo.

O pick-up de nitrogênio no aço deve ser evitado nos processos de fabricação em uma Aciaria de alto desempenho. Entretanto, o pick-up de nitrogênio pode ocorrer em inúmeros pontos na Aciaria, principalmente quando o aço líquido é exposto ao ar atmosférico. Alguns locais de controle têm grande relevância no resultado do pickup, tais como: durante o vazamento do aço do convertedor para a panela, no refino secundário durante a agitação excessiva do aço e no lingotamento contínuo devido a aspiração de ar atmosférico nas conexões. Neste trabalho, o foco do controle da incorporação de nitrogênio é no lingotamento contínuo e, para efeito de estudo, tomou-se como referência um pick-up de nitrogênio de até 5 ppm. Os dados históricos mostram que menos de 64,6% das corridas encontravam-se com pick-up de nitrogênio abaixo de 5 ppm. Assim, visando reduzir esse pick-up foi proposto um ajuste no ângulo da sede da válvula longa, melhoria do projeto do gasket e capacitação da equipe de operação. Após a efetivação dessas ações de controle esse número passou para 97,7% das corridas lingotadas.

All single machines can be delivered in short time “ready-to-perform” with a tested and proved automation system. Thus, the competitiveness of existing lines can be increased immediately with less effort. To find out which machines can be reasonably implemented SMS group offers an “Efficiency Check”. A special proceeding is used by experts to find out quickly which machines will have the largest effect on the efficiency of the line while demanding at the same time the smallest expense.
