Como aplicación práctica de las herramientas hidrodinámicas de flotación desarrolladas por Flottec, McGill y otros investigadores, el objetivo del estudio fue crear, para Minera Fresnillo, una herramienta preliminar de control de procesos, a nivel de la primera celda de la flotación primaria del circuito de plomo, con el fin de expandirla luego a toda la planta. El trabajo determinó ecuaciones matemáticas que describen las relaciones entre las variables de proceso e hidrodinámicas para aumentar la recuperación de plata mientras que disminuye la cantidad de insoluble al concentrado. Se desarrolló usando diseño de experimentos con tres variables (nivel de espuma, adición de espumante en ppm, y flujo de aire en cm/s) para observar los cambios en la recuperación de plata y plomo.

The evolution of trapped geothermal heat in hot underground mine along with emission of toxic gases and dust during mine activity makes the mine environment unfavorable is hazardous to worker’s health. This imposes significant demand on cooling and ventilation systems. As a result, substantial costs are incurred while implementing environmental regulation processes to dissipate the heat and provide comfortable working conditions. Thus, as an alternative, the development of cost effective materials to act as efficient thermal insulators is on the rise. Thermal conductivity is an important property that is a direct measure of a material’s ability to facilitate/deter heat flow. In addition to their superior chemical resistance, adequate mechanical strength, abrasion and fire retardant as well as environmental benefits in comparison to existing building materials such as ordinary Portland cement, aluminosilicate based geopolymers are now gaining widespread interest as promising thermally insulating and sustainable materials. This paper begins with an overview of geopolymers, transitioning into a discussion of recent developments in the field of geopolymer development as a thermally insulating material broadly classified into: filled geopolymers and porous geopolymers resulting in structures with enhanced ability to impede heat flow.

El presente texto describe el proceso de preparación, extracción, recuperación del enmaderado y relleno, que comprende el método de explotación en los mantos de de la mina de Colquijirca, asi como los costos y rendimientos en el tajeo y sus servicios. El depósito mineralizado de Colquijirca se forma a través de los estratos de caliza, produciendo en esta zona circundante un anticlinal y un sinclinal de norte a sur. Sin embargo, dicho plegamiento no permitía una percepción adecuada de los minerales concentrados en las capas. Por tal motivo, surge la aplicación del método que a través de un corte este-oeste en la zona mineralizada, visibiliza la separación de capas mineralizadas entre sí, por otras capas estériles. Producto de esta escisión, la mineralización del porcentaje bajo señala la diferencia establecida en distintas capas diseminadas, mientras que en otras zonas, el proceso de penetración se concentra en los mantos y logra un terreno con mejores condiciones económicas para su explotación. Cabe mencionar que si bien el objetivo inicial del método responde a la recuperación de minerales a través de la visualización de capas mineralizadas y de relleno, la mejora de su modificación en el sistema de corte y relleno procesal permite un ahorro económico a la industria minera. Por tal motivo, se buscó aprovechar mejor el sistema de explotación por medio de una adecuada construcción de galerías paralelas a la dirección de mantos paralelos, el desmonte de rajos, construcciones de la tolva y camino hacia el rajo y la reutilización de la madera en el uso de los puntales. Así, dicho método permite explotar paralelamente varios mantos con la menor preparación y seguridad, aunque su aplicación se restringa a zonas no afectadas por el relleno antiguo y donde la consistencia del terreno es más favorable, aplicándose a los mantos de Mercedes Piritas Pisos y Mercedes Piritas Techos y eliminándose en tajeos inclinado° de 40° y 50° en la mina de Colquijirca.

Many different approaches have been used in the past to characterise iron ore sinter mineralogy to predict sinter quality and elucidate the impacts of iron ore characteristics and process variables on the mechanisms of sintering. Characterisation techniques include optical image analysis and point counting, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the objectives of the measurement. It is generally acknowledged that silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is very important to the quality of the sinter produced; however, strict definitions of the phases and textures of SFCA are not generally agreed. This paper summarises the state-of-the-art in sinter characterisation applied in Australia by both academics and industrial researchers. El presente artículo describe la importancia del acero en Estados Unidos de Norteamérica como el más grande productor de acero del mundo. Los principales minerales utilizados son los óxidos de hierro como la hematita, jimonita y magnetita. El mineral de fierro es extraído por el método de tajeo abierto, palas mecánicas separan la cubierta de detritus y cargan el mineral directamente a camiones o carros de ferrocarril. En Alabama y a lo largo de los Montes Apalaches existen depósitos de fierro sedimentario de formación más reciente que los del Lago Superior, produciendo cerca de 6% de la producción total de los Estados Unidos en 1963. Otros tipos de minerales de fierro explotados en los Estados Unidos son las magnetitas de New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania y las magnetitas y hematitas de Missouri, Utah, Wyoming y California.

En las centrales termoeléctricas alimentadas con carbón, las emisiones de gas están gobernadas por tres factores en los combustibles, donde el tamaño de particulas afecta directamente la temperatura de los gases e indirectamente el tiempo de residencia. En ese sentido, la capacidad de predecir y controlar el tamaño de particulas permitiría hacer ajustes en los paramentos operacionales de las calderas, de tal manera que las condiciones de combustión más eficientes sean alcanzadas. Por ello, el presente texto plantea el modelamiento matemático como herramienta que sirve para predecir la distribución de tamaño de partículas resultante del proceso de reducción de tamaño que se desarrolla en los pulverizadores de carbón a través de modelos de balance poblacional que puedan reflejar cambios en equipo, materiales y condiciones de operación.

Due to increased production of fine coal during mining during this century and inefficient fine coal recovery technologies, a vast reserve of high quality coal currently exists in refuse ponds. A novel fine coal circuit consisting of a hindered-bed classifier, an enhanced gravity concentrator and a flotation column has been evaluated for the recovery of fine coal from refuse ponds. The treatment of a pond derived from Pittsburgh No. 8 seam coal resulted in the production of a premium fuel containing less than 5% ash and a calorific value of about 30,173kJ/kg with 60% mass yield. The results from the treatment of two refuse pond materials will be presented in this publication.

Nas últimas décadas a crescente demanda por carros mais seguros, econômicos e menos poluentes exigiram das montadoras, siderúrgicas e comunidade científica investimentos na pesquisa e no desenvolvimento de novos materiais, tais como os aços avançados de alta resistência. Dentro deste contexto, neste trabalho foi realizada a análise da microestrutura e das propriedades mecânicas de um aço bifásico na condição inicial e submetido a tratamentos térmicos com aquecimento na região intercrítica e resfriamento brusco. Foram analisadas a proporção dos constituintes na microestrutura e as propriedades mecânicas por meio de microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura, de difração de raios X, dureza e de tração. Observou-se, em geral, que o aumento da temperatura intercrítica levou a uma elevação da fração de martensita e, consequentemente, influenciou de forma a aumentar os valores de dureza, resistência mecânica e diminuir a ductilidade.

La anisotropía y geoestadística local es una técnica que optimiza los parámetros geoestadísticos involucrados en los modelos basados en variogramas de forma local, lo que garantiza una mejor adecuación entre el modelo geoestadístico y los datos observados. Esta técnica se utiliza para determinar y tener en cuenta los parámetros que varían localmente para abordar las anisotropías no estacionarias y locales, permitiendo centrarse en las particularidades locales de la distribución de las leyes. Esta técnica es útil para mejorar la precisión de los modelos geoestadísticos, ya que permite abordar las anisotropías no estacionarias y locales, lo que resulta en una mejor adecuación entre el modelo y los datos observados.

Neste trabalho estudou-se o comportamento cinético das transformações de fases por nucleação e crescimento nas interfaces (faces, arestas e vértices), das matrizes poliedricas de Kelvin, Voronoi e de Monte Carlo, através da simulação computacional. Com o objetivo principal de comparar os resultados obtidos das simulações com os modelos analíticos de Johnson e Mehl, Kolmogorov e Avrami (JMAK), e de John W. Cahn. As matrizes foram geradas por modelos estocásticos e através do método de crescimento do Cone Causal. Em engenharia o entendimento do comportamento das transformações de fases por nucleação e crescimento são importantes para prever os possíveis locais de nucleação, assim como no entendimento do comportamento dos constituintes presentes do diagrama ferro carbono, na decomposição da austenita, no processo de recristalização, entre outros. Desta forma, o modelamento computacional foi utilizado para o estudo das transformações de fases por nucleação e crescimento, obtendo como resultados a fração volumétrica, o caminho microestrutural e a contiguidade, ambos resultados foram importantes para a caracterização microestrutural e para descrever a distribuição dos núcleos no espaço. Com os resultados obtidos observou-se que se os núcleos estão bem distribuídos nas interfaces o impingement será mais fraco, levando as simulações de Voronoi e de Kelvin a corroborarem com o modelo analítico de JMAK, já o Modelo de Monte Carlo, não apresentou o mesmo comportamento, ou seja, ficou evidenciado que nem sempre a aleatoriedade vai ser válida para todos os casos. Foi constatado também que se aumenta consideravelmente a quantidade de núcleos, a distribuição perde a característica de aleatoriedade e passa a se comportar como clusters, corroborando com o modelo analítico de Cahn.

LET'S imagine we are at the Grand L Coulee Dam, where daily 15,000 barrels of low-heat Portland cement and 27,000 tons of processed aggregate in various sizes are mixed to produce 30,000 tons of concrete. Inspect the autographic records which show for each 4-cu-yd. mixer batch of concrete the weights of its constituent materials including its several sizes of aggregate, cement, and water, and which also show the period of mixing and the consistency of the mix. Watch the inspectors sample and test the aggregate for gradation and moisture content of sand, and sample the concrete for homogeneity. Watch the huge buckets deposit the concrete in the forms. It looks too dry to handle, but the concrete vibrators make it melt away. Just enough vibration fully to com- pact the mass, but not enough to produce segregation of the materials; the inspector says when. See the sprinkler system covering all hardening concrete with a spray so that it may not thirst for water. Watch the cleaning of the top of an old lift preparatory to placing a new lift; the sand blasting; the blow-down; the mop-up; the minute inspection.

This project, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Division of Environment, addresses two major subjects: refuse removal and subsidence monitoring. The refuse removal task consisted of developing a methodology for selecting the most economical combinations of coal mine breaker refuse and rock banks, disposal sites and material moving systems (trucks, trains, belt conveyers and pipelines). To prepare plans for moving refuse in the Lackawanna Valley of Northeastern Pennsylvania, refuse banks were inventoried, underground disposal sites identified and unit cost data prepared for the various material moving systems. The subsidence monitoring task consisted of defining the phenomenon of coal mine induced surface subsidence, establishing operational requirements, cataloging sensors and techniques to detect and measure subsidence and testing of the most promising techniques (photoelastic patch, tiltmeter, strain gage, microseismic and precise surveying). A preliminary system for a 700 acre area in Scranton utilizing 267 grid sensors, seven microseismic sensors and precise surveying techniques was designed with initial and annual operating costs determined. Two minor tasks supported both main subjects: zoning in the Northern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania and Technology Transfer of subsidence vulnerability prediction techniques.

Coal mining in the United States established a good safety record in 1939. The death and injury rates per man-hour of exposure to risk were favorable compared with most previous years, and the number of persons killed or injured in proportion to the quantity of coal mined was also lower than in any other year for which figures are available. Moreover, productivity per man-hour was higher than ever before. The number of man-hours of work performed increased 9 percent over 1938, but there was a slight decrease in the number of men employed. Reports from operating companies showed 539,375 men employed during the year, and the period of operation averaged 179 workdays per man. Man-hours of work numbered more than 678 million. Accidents to the workers resulted in 1,078 fatalities and 54,015 nonfatal disabling injuries, causing disability of the employee for more than the remainder of the clay on which the accident occurred. For each million man-hours of exposure of the employees to mining hazards the fatality rate was 1.59 compared with 1.78 for 1938, and the injury rate was 79.65 compared with 82.61 for 1938. Production of coal averaged 0.661 ton per man-hour compared with 0.637 ton in 1938. The weighted average length of the workday was 7.03 hours or virtually the same as the previous year's average of 7.04 hours. Measured in man-hours, the average period of employment per man was 1,257 hours in 1939 and 1,147 hours in 1938.

O estudo do efeito da adição de nióbio em um ferro fundido branco alto cromo tratado termicamente com 25%Cr e 3%C foi estudado neste trabalho por microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Partindo de uma liga hipereutética, a adição de 2% de nióbio foi definida considerando que todo Nb adicionado se encontraria na forma de carbonetos de nióbio, NbC, e com o objetivo de obter uma microestrutura próxima à eutética. A adição promoveu um refinamento da microestrutura, sendo que uma fração volumétrica de 27% de carbonetos M7C3 foi observada. Carbonetos grosseiros, inicialmente formados, não são facilmente observados. Uma microestrutura formada por NbC e eutético, M7C3 + matriz (austenita ou martensita), foi obtida. Os carbonetos de nióbio formados são encontrados principalmente na forma compacta. É esperado, portanto, que, a liga com adição de 2% de nióbio apresente melhor resistência ao desgaste abrasivo que a liga sem nióbio, em razão dos carbonetos primários, frágeis e grosseiros, terem sido praticamente suprimidos após a adição de Nb e uma microestrutura mais refinada tenha sido obtida.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, as of January 1, 1934, there were 591 completed refineries in the United States, an increase of 86 ever the total reported at the beginning of 1933 and the largest total ever recorded. It should be noted that the 1934 total, although large, probably does not include more than half of the "pot-still" plants of 1 barrel to 50 barrels daily capacity which have sprung up within the last 2 or 3 years and about which very little information is available. However, the combined operations of these snail refineries are of negligible importance as altogether they refine less crude than one plant of average size. Of the completed plants, 454 were operating on January 1, 1934 and 137 were shut down. In addition, 13 refineries were under construction on January 1, 1934. Compared with the previous year these data indicate a marked increase in the number of operating plants, little change in the number of inoperative plants, but a decline in' the number being built. The material gain in the number of operating plants resulted primarily from the construction off approximately 25 refineries, averaging about 100 barrels capacity in the Kooky Mountain district, as well as from the addition of about 20 plants in the East Texas field.

Copper, sulphur, nickel, cobalt, palladium, silver, and gold can be recovered from the copper sulphide precipitated from the "copper boil" of the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process used at Western Mining Corporation's Kwinana nickel <refinery. The method is based on an oxidative ammonia leach of copper, nickel, and the precious metals at temperatures below 40°C to produce, in part, elemental sulphur, in the residue. This is followed by heating to decompose thiosulphate and remove some ammonia with precipitation of some of the copper, palladium, gold, and silver. Addition of sulphur dioxide to pregnant liquor precipitates copper, as either Chevreul's salt or copper(I) ammonium sulphite, together with the remaining gold and silver. Less than 10 per cent of the dissolved palladium and less than 1 per cent of nickel and cobalt precipitate to this stage.In one option, the Chevreul's salt is dissolved in a solution of copper(II) sulphate, acetonitrile, and water to generate a solution of copper(I) sulphate. Gold and silver do not dissolve. The solution of copper(I) sulphate is thermally disproportionated by distilling acetonitrile to give exceptionally pure copper powder, with desirable characteristics for powder metallUrgy. Nickel, cobalt, and ammonium sulphate are recovered from the motherliquor of the Chevreul's salt precipitation by return to the Sherritt-Gordon process, where recovery procedures already exist. Palladium is recycled for eventual removal as a sulphide with the gold and silver.In the other option, solid copper(I) ammonium-sulphite is <thermally disproportionated in water at 150°C to copper powder.
