"Florida, the State that supplied 82 per cent of the phosphate rock sold in the United. States in 19284, has two producing areas - the hard-rock and the land pebble districts. Production of the hard-rock field, decreasing importance in recent years, is now confined to mines near Dunnellon, in Marion and. Citrus Counties. The land-pebble district, with a production of almost 80 per coat of the nation's requirements, is located, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties. In the land-pebble area the phosphate deposits - probably Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying, older, phosphate-bearing formations - consist of beds of phosphate matrix, covered by practically barren sands and clays. The overburden, ranging in thickness up to 45 feet, is removed by hydraulic methods or by drag-line excavators. The matrix, ordinarily less than 25 feet in thickness, is mined by hydraulicking and is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The dried product of the washing plants is the Florida pebble rock that is sold in foreign as well as domestic markets.The beneficiation of phosphate ores in the land-pebble district of Florida has been largely limited in the past to the recovery of the coarser pebbles. By washing and screening the crude matrix a separation is effected at about 20 mesh (0.033 inch). The coarser material is the phosphate-rock product of the plant and the finer material is discarded. The amenability of the washer- rejects to treatment by other processes is being investigated. Of methods that may have some application to the treatment of the low-grade phosphatic sands that comprise the greater portion of the washer-rejects, gravity concentration has received some study.Laboratory experiments to determine the amenability of phosphate sands to gravity methods of concentration were first performed in October, 1927. Later, in the winter of 1928-1929, a further series of teats was made,. In these later tests phosphatic sands were concentrated by hydraulic classification, and. also by hydraulic classification followed by tabling. In these experiments concentrates with an analysis above the minimum grade of commercial phosphate rock (66 per cent bone phosphate of lime - B.P.L.) obtained. The recovery of the phosphate varied but was promising enough to warrant further study. A more comprehensive investigation was therefore outlined. This paper presents the results obtained from an investigation, of classification and tabling of phosphatic sands recently completed by the United States Bureau of Mines Su cooperation with certain Florida phosphate companies, the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and the University of Alabama."

Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

En esta investigación se plantea una metodología de planificación estratégica de una operación minera que incluye el tiempo en el valor del bloque; es decir, basada en múltiples corridas sucesivas de planes mineros con diferentes conjuntos de fases de minados. Su objetivo de optimización está regido por el valor presente neto de cada bloque del modelo económico, sometido varias veces a la versión mejorada del algoritmo de Lerchs y Grossman, pseudoflow, de manera que se mejoran enormemente los tiempos de estimación de las nuevas propuestas de fases de minado. Asimismo, al hacer uso de la programación lineal entera mixta, se consigue el plan minero óptimo de mayor valor presente neto.

Paper presented at conference and first published in preprint volume of: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in University of Exeter, 23-24 March 1994. London: IMM, 1994. Large, unpredicted ground movements resulting from open cast or underground mining present risks to the safety and economy of extractive industries. As large, sudden failures are usually preceded by small displacements at a much slower rate, the detection and monitoring of these minor changes to the ground surface provides a means of assessing the risks. It is recommended that a visual approach is often preferable to surveying or fixed instrumental measurements. An optical system has been devised, incorporating a 35 mm camera, which allows an immediate comparison on site between a colour transparency taken on a previous inspection and the scene it represents. The observer fuses the transparency stereoscopically with the directly viewed scene. The impression is close to that of normal vision except that differences in detail which have occurred since the transparency was taken are immediately obvious, enabling a qualitative assessment of changes to be made on site. If repeat photography is required it can be taken with exactly the same alignment and coverage. The two images are then available for office analysis using simple micro-photogrammetry

The Kingsgate molybdenite pipes are considered on petrochemical data and field occurrence to be, possibly, epi-magmatic plutonic offshoots grading into hydrothermal bodies. There is reason to believe that the ore is derived from a highly acid granite of type similar to that of the tin bearing areas of northern New England. The mineralogy, microtextures and paragenesis of the ore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Kingsgate Mining Field is situated in steep, heavily timbered terrain 18 miles E.N.E. of Glen Innes and 430 miles north of Sydney. Bismuth and molybdenum ores were discovered at Kingsgate (Yarrow Creek) in 1877. Subsequently some 50 pipes were developed yielding tonnages which at the peak of operations, 1905 to 1920, rivalled production from the rich deposits of northern Queensland.Attempts to revive the field have been made periodically and small parcels of ore have been forthcoming.' During World War II demand for piezioelectric quartz again focussed attention on Kingsgate but twinning and other imperfections of the quartz prevented all but a minor exploitation of the otherwise noteworthy crystals of this locality.There is reason to believe that the ore at Kingsgate is not exhausted through exploration and mining costs would probably be high due to the capricious nature of the pipes and to the irregular distribution of rich ore shoots within them.

Industrial wastes containing 30-50 wt.% Al2O3 and 40-60 wt.% SiO2 may serve as an alternative resource for producing Al-Si alloys. Various raw materials such as used refractory materials from metallurgical furnaces, coal fly ash, andalusite residues, and so on were tested in laboratory to produce Al-Si alloys using carbon-thermal reduction process. A mixture of anthracite and petroleum coke was used as reducing agent. One of the most important operations was to prepare the briquettes made of different raw materials with varying contents of Al2O3 and SiO2. The effects of briquette property, A/S ratio (mass ratio of Al2O3 and SiO2), the amount of carbon reducing agent, on the reduction process and the resulting metals were investigated. The results are useful for development of an alternative technology for Al-Si alloy production, which has the potential application in recycling metals from industrial wastes containing Al2O3 and SiO2.

The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. Geological understanding must advance as mining progresses to ensure continued resource growth and optimal extraction of reserves.CITATION:Lorusso, G, Rogers, J and Tripp, G, 2017. The mining industry of the United States has-long been severely criticized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, net only as compared with other major industries-in the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries particularly Europe. Statistics (often not of strictly comparable nature) indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These figures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in. the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. This picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that. on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar types of mines in Europe, particularly England and Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. However, these foreign accident statistics should be carefully analyzed before we become very mush concerned about them, because they are clot strictly comparable owing to several considerations, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions axe definitely dissimilar to ours in many if not most phases, and numerous ether factors affect the comparability of foreign mine-accident statistics with ours. Unquestionably it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 130,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United. States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, throe, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favorable mine-accident rates than those of the United States. Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity- rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little mere, favorable than the comparable figures in the United States, namely, that mining-has an accident-severity rate about seven times that of the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso de la conductividad como herramienta de manejo de la aglomeración y la lixiviación en las pilas. En este sentido, dicha conductividad es un recurso necesario de manejo que garantiza la calidad de producto según los requerimientos hidrometalúrgicos. Para ello, se realizó un periodo de aplicación en la S.M. Cerro Verde, cual permitió eliminar las consecuencias de la deficiente aglomeración de entonces. De forma que el criterio de control operativo para el manejo de la aglomeración es mantener el valor de conductividad eléctrica del aglomerado en el rango de 150-180 mA,- aplicable al mineral muy alto o muy bajo en finos o arcillas- y el que garantiza un estándar y deseable calidad, sin segregación en las pilas, etc. En consecuencia, las operaciones mineras con mayores problemas en la permeabilidad de sus pilas por finos o arcillas en calidad indeseable, encuentran bajo este desarrollo, la solución para mejorar su aglomeración, así como el conocer la permeabilidad que tendrá la pila en emplazamiento, se pueda realizar las medidas correctivas.

Recent innovations in atomization of molten metals have occurred in the area of single fluid atomization. Impulse Atomization (IA), one of the single fluid techniques, provides unique capabilities to study different regimes of atomization in a controlled environment. By changing processing variables, a mono-dispersed distribution of droplets above one millimeter in diameter can be produced. This is accomplished through proper characterization of the forces influencing the process and in particular the flow of melt through the orifice. This paper will discuss the approach and illustrate results with molten aluminum and cobalt.

Demolition blasting next to an active railroad can be very challenging because of track safety, blasting vibrations, potential track fouling by blast debris, and short work windows on a live track. Recently, in eastern Washington, one of the major railroad companies has been aggressively constructing a second main track to accommodate the expected increase in rail traffic of natural resource products. To accommodate construction of the second line, the railroad company used blasting demolition techniques to remove an old railroad trestle pier on the Milwaukee Road that was in the footprint of the new track bed. The trestle bridged the present rail line and flanked the track with two massive 550-ton (499 tonne) twin-columned steel reinforced concrete piers. The railroad contracted with a specialized contractor to remove the south pier using blasting demolition techniques. The blasting design presented the following challenges: blasting during live track conditions and short work windows; designing a V-notch blast pattern to ensure the pier fell away from the live track; drilling, loading, and timing of the shot; maintaining blasting vibrations at the track below 4 in./sec (102 mm/sec); maintaining ambient overpressure noise below 133 dB; control of fly rock and debris; and track protection and emergency debris removal plan.

"In mechanized mining, poor equipment efficiency (availability, utilization, productivity, and quality) can endanger the success of the operation. This case study will show how an initiative to improve equipment performance developed into a comprehensive turnaround plan for the mine that placed it in the forefront of performance achievement.As part of a company-wide review process, poor overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) was identified as a major reason for the mine not achieving its targets. A project to improve the OEE identified eight improvement areas (elements) that contributed significantly to the poor performances. Measurement metrics were determined for these elements, followed by determination of baseline and target (improved) key performance indicators (KPIs). Cost savings associated with the improved efficiencies were calculated and tracked throughout the project. The mine team determined the specific actions required to achieve the target KPI in each element. These were individually developed and managed like mini-projectswith allocated responsibilities for delivery. The paper will indicate how this OEE improvement initiative triggered an improvement in almost all sections of the mine. Soon after launch, the initiative gathered momentum as the KPIs starting to improve. A visible tracking system exists at the mine and each employee can see the improvements and feel the success. The original eight elements were extended by five more, and the mini-projects grew as participants saw the success of the initiative.This paper concludes that through management and worker involvement, visible measurement and controls, and carefully chosen improvement elements, the mine was turned around. It is now achieving and exceeding its targets, and employee relations and motivation as well as safety have improved considerably. All of these achievements are reflected in the bottom line."

The rock mechanics approach to stability problems of steep rock slopes dealt with in this article has particular reference to the concept and methods of analysis developed by the Salzburg, Austria, school of rock mechanics. These theories are based on the principal postulate of the anistropy of the technological properties of in-situ rock masses. The present approach, which is more in line with geological engineering concepts, differs distinctively from the soil mechanics and engineering geological concepts commonly practiced in the United States. PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING APPROACH TO GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVAILABLE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS At the present time two different concepts are available for engineering analysis of underground structures and foundations in different earth material: soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Of these two branches, soil mechanics is, after 40 years of initially revolutionary and more recently evolutionary development, well established. Its principal concept of replacing in-situ soils or rock masses by perfectly homogeneous substitues has resulted in many practicable methods of analysis which, if applied with judgement, have resulted in successful applications throughout the world. Conversely, rock mechanics is still in the early stages of revolutionary development. Few, if any, standard concepts or methods of analysis have been established. Opinions vary widely. At present the professional background of an investigator very often determines the engineering concept to be applied to a particular problem, rather than its actual requirements if considered objectively. This paper stresses the rock mechanics or geological engineering point of view advocated by the Salzburg group. A review of the soil mechanics concepts is considered beyond the scope of this paper. At Waiuta near Reefton there is a remarkable vein of quartz <1 m thick which, apart from small offsets on late-stage faults, is a sheet like body essentially continuous down-dip and along-strike for> 1 km. The vein strikes NNE and dips steeply west (032/78¦W). From 1906-1951 the Blackwater mine produced 740,404 ounces of gold from the vein, called the æBirthday ReefÆ, which was one third of the total production from Reefton Goldfield and the fourth largest gold mine in New Zealand. Within the mine the vein is disrupted into a series of northeast-plunging shoots by late-stage faults. Similar faults, but with larger displacements, were thought in the past to truncate the vein at the northern and southern ends of the mine. The implication of this fault dissection model is that offset remnants of the vein await discovery. This study investigated the geometry of the vein and its relationship to host-rock structures and late-stage faults. A new model considers folding and lithological variation in the host-rocks to be fundamental in controlling the scale and geometry of veining, but does not rule out the possibility of some late-stage fault dissection. The Birthday Reef truncates 200-400 m wavelength folds in Greenland Group host-rocks at c.10¦ angle, that results in variation in the structural properties of host-rocks along strike every ~1350-2500 m. The spacing of fold hinges in the wall-rock veins is equivalent to the strike length of historic mining, implying that the Birthday Reef is probably hosted in a single limb of a fold. Similar relationships between mineralisation and host-rock folds appear to be present elsewhere in the Reefton Goldfield (e.g. Capleston and Murray Creek group of mines). Exploration targets are located one fold wavelength (c.1350-2500 m) further along strike from the Blackwater mine and relatively barren rock is expected in between the mine and target areas. Refining the location of folds and different host rock lithologies, using geophysical data and quality geological mapping, is the key to reducing exploration risks and discovering further resources.

In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

One of the lithium minerals most widespread in the earth's surface is spodumene (Li20-A1203-4Si02), a lithium aluminium silicate. For some time, deposits of this mineral were known to exist in the Black Hills of South Dakota, but it was only quite recently that Hess4/ pointed out the great magnitude of the low-grade deposits in forth Carolina. The theoretical lithia (Li20) content of spodumene is 9.04 percent. The only other minerals with such high lithia content are the phosphates, but these occur only in pockets and are not in extensive deposits5/. Actually, however, the lithia content in spodumene is never found to be this high, being nearly always below 7 percent for the pure mineral, and part of the lithia is apparently replaced by other alkalies.
