GENERALThe lode, for purposes of description, may be said to be divided into two portions which are usually referred to as the Southern and Northern Orebodies.The southern ore-body is the larger and in places attains a width of 200 feet. The northern ore-body is, generally speaking, comparatively narrow. These ore-bodies have a northerly pitch of approximately 45' and a westerly dip of 60. In the southern ore-body a grid of ore chutes is provided at 31 ft. 8 in. (5 square set) intervals and this necessitates an elaborate arrangement of cross-cuts, portion of which have to be driven through the foot-wall. Crushed country rock adjacent to the foot-wall makes it necessary for drives to be placed at least 60 feet from the lode.In the northern ore-body the ore chutes are arranged along a longitudinal drive, thus making a much simpler layout. These layouts were described in detail by A. R. West (Proceedings A.I.M.M. No. 117). In opening up a new level from the shaft plat, a heading is extended in a westerly direction until a point approximately 60 feet from the footwall of the lode is reached.At this point the direction of the cross-cut is altered to a bearing approximately 90 to the general strike of the ore-body, and the cross-cut continued until the hanging-wall is intersected. From the information obtained together with that from diamond drilling, the outline of the ore-body is plotted as closely as possible, and this serves as a basis for the layout of the level. Drives south and north from the main cross-cut are made in order to determine the southern and northern extremity of the southern ore-body. The development of a water accounting framework that enables consistent and contextual reporting of minerals operationsÆ water use, represents a key sustainable development objective that many Australian minerals companies have committed to. A future water accounting framework will require: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that are consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current regulatory requirements and voluntary approaches were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (eg water loss through evaporation). The adopted terms and definitions typically require a combination of empirical and estimated data. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites, selected to test a variety of commodity and biophysical situations. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and following a period of stakeholder engagement and third party review, is being refined as a first step towards developing nationally consistent water use reporting for the Australian minerals industry.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1977, 12 companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 65% of production capacity. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 31% of the total capacity; Gulf Coast States 23%, Northern States 26%, and other Southern States 20%. Based on estimated producer prices output of primary metal in 1977 Has valued at $4.6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered 'in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1977, building accounted for about 25%; packaging 22%; transportation 21%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 9%; and other uses, 12%.

El presente texto señala la situación del carbón en el valle del Santa, al tiempo que busca reivindicar su posición, producción y demanda del mismo. Para ello, el doctor Fraser describe las características del mineral, encontrando que el carbón del tipo "La Limeña" contiene una elevada gravedad y friabilidad, como un buen porcentaje de los "middlings". Posteriormente se realizaron pruebas como la del carbón R.O.M. en una planta Bradford improvisada, demostrando que el carbón y los "middlings", se trituran fácilmente gracias a la friabilidad del mismo y que el producto de tamaño mayor puede ser escogido a mano fácilmente para su disposición futura. Mientras que las pruebas de diversas clases de "middlings", evidencian dificultad en el tratamiento para la recuperación de carbón puro, pues el triturado a tamaños finos libera sólo pequeñas cantidades de carbón "float", manteniéndo su calidad inferior en comparación con los finonaturales, que se trituran fácilmente del R.O.M. y del producto de la planta Bradford. De otro lado, se describe el beneficio del carbón en las minas, la conservación de maquinaria, uso de briquetas, el empleo del ferrocarril como transporte y las instalaciones de las plantas lavadoras del banco minero en Chimbote y planta pallasca en Chimbote.

This report presents the results of a study to develop optimal designs for light-weight mine roof supports for use in underground coal mines. A load capacity of 196 kN (22 tons) and a height adjustable between 1.829 m (72 inches) and 2.438 m (96 inches) were taken as the design parameters and the design goal was a unit weighing less than 22.3 kg (50 lbs). Three alternative design concepts were explored, viz. mechanical, hydraulic, and hydro-mechanical and a total of 13 designs analyzed in detail. Steel, aluminum alloy and composites were the main potential construction materials investigated for suitability from structural, life, and safety and other considerations. The designs considered most promising for development were: (i) the mechanical screw-pin type using telescopic tubes and a fine adjustment screw thread section (ii) the all-hydraulic type, of steel, aluminum alloy or aramid graphite construction (iii) the hydro-mechanical design using telescopic tubes and a short stroke hydraulic cylinder for fine adjustment It is shown that by using realistic mathematical models for stress and deflection calculations, it is possible to reduce prop weight to the design goal. The analysis presented for all-hydraulic props is applicable to hydraulic cylinders on all mining equipment and similar machinery. This report includes the computer program and user's guide for analyzing hydraulic cylinders as well as a cross-indexed bibliography on structural composites.

This report summarizes the results of an investigation into the causes of coal mine roof instability caused by the environmental characteristics of the air ventilated through a mine. The field studies, which were mostly in the Illinois Coal Basin, concentrated on collecting data of surface weather conditions, mine air characteristics (relative humidity and temperature), roof material types, roof movements, and characteristics of roof deterioration. The field studies revealed seasonal changes in weather are reflected in the mine air. The intake air undergoes rapid tempering along its course as it interacts with the ambient mine conditions. There are seasonal moisture interchanges between the mine rock and air, and a mine will lose more water than it gains on a yearly basis. The field studies also established that when the roof rock is shaley, seasonal changes in the humidity will cause roof deterioration because of the detrimental action of moisture on the shale. Roof falls were inventoried and classified by geometry. In the laboratory investigations, physical tests proved unreliable for evaluating shales for roof stability. The Franklin slake test lacks the sensitivity needed to differentiate shale durability for roof stability. A relative humidity test that reveals the sensitivity of a shaley rock to moisture change was devised. Environemntal chamber studies showed that neither temperature nor barometric pressure have a direct influence on shale durability. Photoelastic studies showed that the rate and depth of moisture absorption into a shale is controlled by bedding planes, fractures, and holes interrupting the exposed surface.

Neste trabalho foi avaliado um método alternativo de redução dos óxidos de cobre, a técnica de redução assistida por plasma de hidrogênio em reator de plasma pulsado de corrente continua (cc). O plasma de hidrogênio apresenta como possibilidade a produção de espécies de alto poder redutor, derivadas da molécula de H2 [1], além de produzir majoritariamente, como produto da reação, o vapor de água que não é prejudicial ao meio ambiente [2]. A pesquisa se limita ao estudo da influência da pressão do processo de redução a plasma sobre a redução de pós de óxido de cobre (I) (Cu2O). Os experimentos de redução foram realizados em um reator a plasma pulsado DC, sob fluxos de hidrogênio de 300cm3/min, temperatura de 300°C, tempo de 60 minutos e pressões variáveis de 267, 534, 800 e 1068 Pa. Determinou-se a eficiência da redução através de um balanço de massa e foram feitas as seguintes análises nos produtos da redução: difração de raios-X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e EDS. Os maiores valores de frações de redução foram obtidos a 800Pa, o que pode estar associado à formação de uma bainha catódica que envolve por completo e de maneira uniforme a superfície das camadas de pó.

AN acute current shortage of copper, with the prospect that conditions may become worse, indicated by Office of Production Management information. Present estimates of copper requirement for defense indicate that nearly all the available metal will be required in the future for this purpose. Severe dislocations are, expected, but the objective is to distribute the copper available for civilian use in such a manner as to minimize these dislocations. The advisory committee on metals and minerals has been asked for a suggestions which may be helpful in meeting this situation.\

The Bureau of Mines is conducting investigations to determine how fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Govern- ment can be utilized with greater efficiency. As a result of these investigations a number of reports have been published, each report treating of one phase of fuel utilization. A list of these publications is given at the end of this bulletin. The efficient utilization of coal depends on the correct design of furnaces and on their proper operation. To attain both of these conditions a knowledge of the fundamental principles of combus- tion is necessary. Therefore, the study of the combustion of coal in industrial furnaces has been made a part of the bureau's fuel in- vestigations. The desirability of investigating the fundamental principles of combustion was suggested by the study of a large number of steam- ing tests made by the fuel-testing division on coals from all of the more important fields in the United States. The results of these tests have been published in Bulletin 325 of the United States Geological Survey and in Bulletin 23 of the Bureau of Mines. As a result of that study a plan to investigate the combustion of coal in a special apparatus in which all conditions could be controlled was presented to the National Advisory Board for Fuels and Struc- tural Materials at its meeting of April 10 and 11, 1906. The plan received the approval of the board, and since the establishment of the experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh the investigation of the combustion of coal has been carried on intermit- tently. The history of these investigations is given in Technical Paper 63.

O sistema de despoeiramento primário da Aciaria da thyssenkrupp CSA é um equipamento complexo utilizado durante o sopro no conversor para captação, limpeza e resfriamento dos gases. Estes gases são indiretamente resfriados em uma caldeira de recuperação de calor quase vertical de grande altura. Em seguida passa por resfriamento direto (resfriador evaporativo) com injeção de água e vapor, onde há uma decantação das partículas maiores. Em seguida os gases penetram no precipitador eletrostático, onde é retirada quase a totalidade do pó restante. Um ventilador de grande potência faz a exaustão destes gases, através da caldeira, resfriador evaporativo e precipitador eletrostático, para em seguida comprimi-los para a chaminé ou para o último resfriamento dos gases antes do envio para o gasômetro. A chaminé possui um queimador piloto que queima o monóxido de carbono (CO) transformando-o em dióxido de carbono (CO2). Do gasômetro, os gases podem ser fornecidos para outras unidades da usina onde é consumido como combustível. O objetivo deste trabalho foi aumentar a energia do gás BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace), através de um conjunto de ações, visando à redução de emissão de gás CO2, redução de consumos de gás natural e aumento da geração de energia.

Processos de fundição de ligas de alumínio com altos teores de Mg são um desafio da indústria, uma vez que diferentes taxas de resfriamento ocorrem em geometrias diversas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a liga de alumínio AA5052 com variações em teores de Mg por meio de experimentos de solidificação direcional transitória, e compreender seus efeitos com relação a evolução de parâmetros térmicos, microestruturais, e propriedade mecânica. As leis experimentais de evolução do espaçamento dendrítico primário (?1) com relação a taxa de resfriamento resultam em: ?_1=640 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_1=300 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga com 3,2%Mg. As leis de crescimento de espaçamento dendrítico secundário (?2) com relação a velocidade de solidificação resultaram em: ?_2=27 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_2=15 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para as ligas com 2,6%Mg e 3,2%Mg. Maiores teores de Mg na liga AA5052 proporcionaram uma expressiva redução no valor de ?2 para uma determinada VL. A evolução da dureza mostrou-se diretamente relacionada ao tamanho e a distribuição dos intermetálicos presentes, sendo ?2 o fator predominante neste controle.

El presente trabajo presenta alternativas indirectas para la exploración de depósitos de pórfidos de cobre (DPC), en los dos arcos magmáticos desarrollados entre Arequipa y Tacna. Estos dos arcos están representados por la Formación Guaneros y los batolitos de Punta Coles e Ilo, con edades Jurásico a Cretáceo inferior, y El Grupo Toquepala con el Batolito de Yarabamba de edad Cretáceo a Paleoceno. El análisis tectónico, aeromagnético y geoquímico de estos dos arcos, evidencia posibles áreas favorables al emplazamiento de cuerpos ígneos que puedan haber originado yacimientos económicos. De forma que se busca reevaluar los conceptos geológicos en tectonomagmatismo para la exploración de pórfidos de cobre, así como el desarrollo de ideas conceptuales a nivel regional de los patrones magmáticos y estructurales especialmente entre Perú y Chile y contribuir la exploración de Porfidos de Cobre desde el punto de vista geoquímico y tectónico.

Componentes de alto custo como rodas ferroviárias estão em pleno desenvolvimento a fim de aumentar o desempenho em operação. Para isso, diversos materiais microligados têm sido testados para obter melhores propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas. Esses materiais estão fortemente sujeitos a fraturas devido às solicitações térmicas e mecânicas durante o trabalho. Muitas dessas fraturas frágeis são ocasionadas por propagação de trinca, impacto, fadiga ou alguma falha metalúrgica. Essas fraturas e riscos operacionais vêm aumentando gradativamente com as maiores cargas transportadas. Portanto, novos materiais e processos produtivos devem ser exaustivamente testados a fim de garantir alto desempenho e confiabilidade. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar as propriedades dos materiais atuais e de diferentes composições de aços microligados de rodas ferroviárias de vagões, fabricadas pelos processos de fundição e forjamento. As amostras foram submetidas a ensaios metalográficos, mecânicos e de tenacidade à fratura. Foram avaliadas rodas convencionais, microligadas ao vanádio e microligadas ao nióbio. Nas rodas forjada e fundida, foram observadas propriedades de tração e dureza similares, e superioridade para o microligado em relação ao aço convencional. As rodas forjadas apresentaram melhor resistência ao impacto e a tenacidade a fratura, destacando-se a microligada ao nióbio.

The general distribution of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera can be related to its tectonic evolution. The Canadian Cordillera is naturally divisible into five longitudinal tectonic belts within which rocks are broadly similar in type, age and history. From west to east they are the Insular, Coast Crystalline, Intermontane, Omineca and Eastern Marginal belts. Seven classes of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera are defined and their characteristics described. These classes are skarn, porphyry, massive sulphide, stratiform, magmatic, copper in basic lavas, and vein deposits. Maps showing the distribution of medal and metal-group concentrations serve to illustrate the relations in space and time between mineralization and geologic evolution.

La lixiviación con cianuro es el proceso utilizado por la industria minera para extraer oro y plata. El cianuro es un compuesto tóxico para la mayoría de los organismos vivos. Sin embargo, muchos microorganismos son capaces de tolerarlo e incluso degradarlo. En ese sentido, el texto caracteriza y analiza la composición de las comunidades microbianas de suelos y aguas contaminadas por residuos de cianuro, producto de la actividad minera en la región La Libertad a través de la metagenómica dirigida al ADNr. De forma que se logró aislar e identificar molecularmente 89 cepas microbianas, como los géneros Pseudomonas, Bacillus y Alcaligenes. Asimismo, la capacidad de degradación del cianuro ha sido establecida en base a pruebas in vitro considerando estas cepas, ya sea individualmente o en consorcios.

"INTRODUCTION The Federal Explosives Act (55 Stat., 863), as amended, was passed by Congress on December 26, 1941, and became effective immediately; it amended the Act of October 6, 1917 (4o Stat., 385). The purpose of the Act was to regulate the manufacture, storage, use, and possession of explosives in order to prevent sabotage and to assure that explosives and ingredients would not fall into unauthorized hands. Under the provisions of the Act, the Director of the Bureau of Mines was authorized to administer its provisions under the supervisions of the Secretary of the Interior.EXPLOSIVES-CONTROL DIVISIONTo administer the Act, necessary personnel were employed in accordance with the appropriation made from a special presidential fund and later by Congress, and the Explosives Control Division was organized as a part of the Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Mines constituting the fourth division of that branch. A central office was established in Washington, D. C., and field offices were designated largely at the offices of the Health and Safety Branch throughout the country, and 50 explosives investigators were employed and assigned to work from these offices under the direction of the district engineers of the eight districts into which the United States is divided by the Health and Safety Branch. The territory assigned to each investigator was based on the approximate amount of explosives stored in that area; however, smaller territories were assigned to investigators stationed near the Pacific coast, which was indicated as critical by the armed forces."
