This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in nongassy noncoal mines and tunnels. This revised and supplemented listing supersedes an earlier publication2 released in 1963. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and outlined in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it for safe use in mines.

THE choice of a pumping plant for the drainage of a mine is a matter of such importance that it is obvious that in a short paper it is impossible to go fully into the reasons governing the adoption of any particular type. The author, therefore, proposes to briefly discuss the methods.in vogue, and, as far as possible, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the numerous systems. The probiem is of extreme importance to the mining engineer, and it appears that in the past sufficient thought has not been given to this branch, as shown by the numerous failures which are encountered.When water is met with in large quantities, the development of the mine depends upon the pumping plant to such a great extent that the most careful consideration should be given before deciding on any particular scheme for drainage. The pumpingplant in a mine should be looked. upon in the light of an insurance policy, and should be treated as such, care being taken that the premium is as low as possibl~, and to ensure this it is necessary that the most efficient plant be secured. Local conditions play such an important part ill the design of a plant that no hard and fast rules can be laid down. The details in small-scale variability of the geological occurrence and chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts are not yet well understood, although the northwestern Pacific seamounts are believed to be among the most promising areas for rare metal resources. Our belief is that geological observations and geochemical analyses are still insufficient for economic evaluation or for discussion of depositional processes and environments. Our team, composed of geologists, mineralogists, geochemists, physical engineers, and microbiologists has attempted to utilize an ROV for in-situ measurement and for sampling of undisturbed and uncontaminated ferromanganese crusts at three typical seamounts in the NW Pacific near the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. The first ROV geological survey of ferromanganese crusts was successfully completed, and the ROV proved to be the most powerful, efficient and elegant method to date. The collected samples (more than total 1 ton of crusts, at more than 100 sites along a total of approximately 10 km of survey lines) were most suitable to analyze water-depth dependency and secular variation of their composition. The intact surfaces of crusts, collected without the usual abrasion caused by dredging, were also valuable for microbial study of Mn oxidizing bacteria. The ROV sampling devices, however, can be improved with further sophisticated drills or rock saw blades in the future.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. PSC has been involved with the mineral sands business for several years with senior staff having in excess of 30 years global industry experience. Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

The two contracts of the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor(BWARI) sewer project for the City of Columbus, Ohio total nearly 35,000 feet of 14and 12-foot diameter tunnel. EPB TBMs will install precast concrete segmental lining through difficult glacial soils ranging from clean granular to hard till with high groundwater and boulders, crossing roads, railroads, and a large stream. Construction of 12 shafts and a large Interconnect Structure involving major ground stabilization work is required. The paper will review design of major project elements and present an update on construction progress.

"In mineral exploration and mining applications, it is sometimes necessary to reduce sampling error in order to improve representivity of individual sample assays. Historic efforts to reduce sampling error have relied on the belief that larger samples exhibit less sampling error. Justifications for this belief traditionally have coupled the binomial theorem with an ideal geological material consisting of ore and gangue particles of equal size and shape (an equant grain model) and empirical tests of geological materials, to illustrate an inverse relationship between sample size and sampling variance. To date, no proof exists of this sample size-sampling variance relationship in real geological materials exhibiting variations in grain size, shape, composition, and degree of liberation.Using first principles calculus and the formula for the mean, sample mass and sampling variance are proven to be inversely proportional in all geological materials. Distribution assumptions and physically ideal geological models are not used in this proof. Furthermore, algebraic manipulations of expressions describing the variances of equant grain models consistent with binomial, hypergeometric, and Poisson distributions reveal that these models also exhibit an inverse sample size-sampling variance relationship. Thus, the sampling behaviors of these models are numerically consistent with the sampling behaviors of real geological materials, and these models can be used to estimate sampling errors in real geological materials using simple sampling parameters."

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the history, characteristics, distribution, and mineral development potential of 21 lode gold deposits in or near the Chugach National Forest (CNF), AK. It includes findings from a 4-yr (1979 to 1982) mineral evaluation of the CNF conducted by the Bureau and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This evaluation, undertaken to provide the U.S. Forest Service with mineral resource data for use in making decisions on land use, included site-specific mapping and sampling of more than 200-lode gold deposits. The data presented here were compiled from the findings of this 4-yr evaluation and from existing literature. Fourteen of the 21 lode gold deposits described in this report contain a combined identified resource of 117,750 short tons (st) averaging 0.55 oz/st Au and 0.2 oz/st Ag. Two mineralized felsic dikes in the Summit Lake-Palmer Creek area contain a combined identified resource of 18 million st grading 0.02 oz/st Au and 0.16 oz/st Ag. Identified resources were not determined for the remaining five deposits because of a lack of information.

The size of bubbles plays an important role in flotation. Equations used to calculate the size of bubbles all show the effect of liquid/gas surface tension. However, the surface tension does not change much with frother concentration and experiments conducted using single capillaries (or single-hole spargers) do not reveal any clear effect of the frother concentration on bubble size. The size of bubbles does, however, strongly depend on frother concentration when multi-hole spargers are utilized (or when measured in a flotation cell); at low frother concentrations the bubble size is much larger indicating coalescence as a main mechanism determining the size. Coalescence can be prevented at frother concentrations exceeding the critical coalescence concentration (CCC), which in turn was found to be interrelated with the dynamic foamibility index (DFI).

The paper presents a study on the influence of face retreat rate in longwall coal mining on surface subsidence. It shows possibilities to influence dynamic ground movement by using a specific and controlled winning regime. For this, a dynamic stochastic prediction model used by DMT in Germany will be proved and adjusted on the specific character of geology in the Northern Appalachian coal field. Occurring ground movements such as inclination, curvature and deformation can be analyzed under static and dynamic points of view. It is theoretically shown that the face retreat rate has only a small influence on the static deformation values, but directly affects rate and acceleration of subsidence and deformation processes. The study shows that because of low mining depth and high mined thickness, static deformation values have the largest impact to surface objects. This implies that high face retreat rates don?t affect the impact on surface objects.

Large structures in mines (faults, dykes, pillars, abutments) fail when the load exceeds the strength. If the loading system stiffness (LSS, also referred to as the ‘local mine stiffness’) is lower than the stiffness of the structure the failure will be unstable. The greater the difference between these stiffnesses, the greater the energy release during unstable failure. A method has been formulated by which the LSS is established through cost-effective numerical modelling while insight into the structure stiffness (source stiffness - SS) is provided by apparent stiffness, a parameter based on the empirical relation between seismic moment and radiated seismic energy of small seismic events from the area/volume of interest. By plotting LSS vs SS a ‘stiffness diagram’ is constructed that is useful for seismic hazard ranking of different structures. A comparative back-analysis of the Dagbreek fault in Welkom, South Africa, (source of the 1990 Matjhabeng earthquake) and two other nearby faults confirm the applicability of the method. An extension of the method, where ‘hazard magnitude’ is used as a measure of the LSS, allows a ‘stiffness diagram’ to be constructed using seismic data only. Si la raideur du système de chargement (LSS, aussi appelé la « raideur de la mine locale ») est plus basse que la raideur de la structure, l’éboulement sera instable. Plus la différence est grande entre ces deux raideurs, plus l’énergie dégagée pendant l’éboulement instable est grande. Une méthode a été formulée selon laquelle le LSS est établi par modélisation numérique rentable, tandis que la raideur de la structure (SS – raideur de la source) est établie par la raideur apparente, un paramètre basé sur la relation empirique entre le moment sismique et l’énergie sismique radiée de petits moments sismiques dans l’aire/volume en question. On trace le « diagramme de raideur » en relevant les deux mesures (LSS et SS), ce qui est utile pour classer les risques sismiques de structures différentes. On vérifie l’applicabilité de la méthode en comparant la faille de Welkom, Afrique du Sud (foyer du séisme de Matjhabeng en 1990) avec deux autres failles proches. Une extension de cette méthode, dans laquelle on utilise la « magnitude du risque » comme mesure du LSS, permet de construire le « diagramme de raideur » avec des données sismiques seulement. Je grösser der Unterschied zwischen diesen Steifheiten, desto grösser die Energiefreigabe während des instabilen Bruches. Es wurde eine Methode formuliert, durch die das LSS durch eine kosteneffektive numerisches Modell erstellt wird, während ein Einblick von der offensichtlichen Steifheit in die Struktursteifheit (Quellensteifheit - SS) gegeben ist, ein Parameter der auf der emipirischen Relation zwischen seismischem Moment und ausgestrahlter seismischer Energie von kleinen seismischen Ereignissen vom Interessens-/Volumenbereich basiert. Durch das Kartograpahieren der LSS in Bezug auf die SS wird ein `Steifheitsdiagramm ' konstruiert, welches für seismische Gefahrklassifizierung der unterschiedlichen Strukturen nützlich ist. Eine vergleichende Postanalyse der Dagbreek Verwerfung in Welkom, Südafrika, (Zentrum des Matjhabeng Erdbebens 1990) und in zwei anderen nahe gelegenen Verwerfungen bestätigen die Anwendbarkeit der Methode. Eine Verlängerung der Methode, in der die `Gefahrengröße' als Maß für das LSS verwendet wird, gestattet, daß ein `Steifheitsdiagramm' konstruiert wird, welches nur seismische Daten verwendet.

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. This infold has been faulted and intruded by albite porphyry resulting in the formation of a composite body of slates...

NIOSH research has focused on the monitoring and the control of methane levels in active mine workings. Response times for instrumentation using catalytic heat-of-combustion sensor technology were evaluated. NIOSH research has modelled the flow of methane gas onto long-wall faces and gobs, developed engineering controls to limit methane levels during mining, and designed coalbed and gob degasification systems. Available methane control systems have been challenged by recent developments in longwall and room-and-pillar mining systems. This includes increased face advance rates leading to increased productivities, increased longwall panel sizes, and the generally deeper workings of U.S. coal mines. The potentially violent nature of any underground explosion or ignition requires the measurement, control, and reduction of methane emissions into the mine environment for continued worker safety.
