The estimation of some properties of South African coals from proximate analyses by J. W. de KOCK, Pr. Eng., Ph.D. (Chem. Eng.) Cantab. (Fellow) and J-P. FRANZIDIS, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Correlations have been obtained whereby calorific values, ultimate analyses, and Hardgrove Indices can be estimated from proximate analyses of South African coals. This has been done by the application of stepwise multiple linear-regression analyses of a mass of data published by the Fuel Research Institute.

A critical comparison of specific cooling power and the wet kata thermometer in hot mining environments By J. de V. Lambreehts. D.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) A new formula for the wet kata thermometer has been established in place of the currently used one which is believed to be fundamentally wrong and the new formula is compared with the recently proposed specific cooling power concept. Apart from a constant multiplier, it is concluded that the difference between. the two concepts lies solely in the value of 'n' in the function vn and that this value for the cooling power of air on the sweating human body remains to be established reliably. The kata thermometer might yet be found to be a reliable predictor of heat stress in hot environments.

The presence of impurities such as Se and Te in copper sulfate leach solutions can have a detrimental effect on electrowinning efficiency. These elements can be removed from the solution by precipitation; sulfurous acid is commonly used as a precipitation reagent, while studies have also reported improved precipitation with the addition of metallic copper. This paper aimed to determine the effect of conditions used during the solution purification step on the characteristics of the precipitates that formed. Precipitation tests were performed in a batch reactor with copper sulfate leach solutions obtained from the base metal refinery of a platinum group metal producer. The effects of agitation rate (250 and 500 rpm), SO2 flow rate (4.4 and 5.8 mL/min.L), temperature (65 and 95°C) and metallic copper powder addition (0, 1 and 2 g/L) on the characteristics of the precipitates formed during the tests were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The major phases detected in the precipitates formed when using SO2 as the only precipitation reagent were elemental Se and Cu2Se. The introduction of copper powder led to the production of different sulfide phases for the experiments conducted at 65°C irrespective of the values of the other reaction parameters. At 95°C, Cu crystals, Cu2O and tiny inclusions of Cu2(Se,Te) were the prominent phases noticed in the precipitates produced from all the tests conducted with copper powder as precipitation enhancing reagent. The Skorpion Zinc Project demonstrated the viability of the production of zinc from non-sulphide (commonly called ?zinc-oxide?) ores, using the leach/solvent extraction/electrowinning process route. The success of Skorpion raised the profile of a number of other zinc oxide deposits, considered to be similar. However, a study of three such deposits demonstrates that the application of whole-ore-leaching may be limited and that the concentration of zinc, or at least the separation from acid-consuming gangue minerals, prior to leaching is essential to the successful recovery of zinc from these deposits. The recovery of zinc is dependent on an understanding of the geology of the deposit, the mineralogical association of zinc minerals with gangue minerals (Boni, 2005) and limitations of mining practice. Flowsheet development and the associated metallurgical testwork to derive an economically viable treatment route from two of these deposits are discussed. Key parameters affecting zinc recovery by gravity separation and flotation are presented, demonstrating that even minor differences in mineralogy have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption. The study also deals with the determination of appropriate design parameters through metallurgical mapping of the dense media separation process.

Modelling and scheduling for Grootegeluk coal mine, situated in the north- western Transvaal, is by means of a series of modular systems. Modelling of the multilayered body, which is part of the Waterberg coalfield, was based on a detailed study of the behaviour of coal and waste qualities and the sub- sequent use of standard geostatistical techniques. A notable improvement on previous methods was attained. Scheduling procedures and systems were developed to model a multibench pit producing coal for several metallurgical plants as well as a power-station. Scheduling was done by producing a series of longitudinal cuts, the cuts being subdivided into increments. By allocating cuts to certain periods, the resulting calculated product tonnages were com- pared with production targets, and by iteration a final scheduling sequence was determined.

In this study, potassium ferrocyanide, a non-toxic cyanide precursor in dark and diffuse reflection environments, was applied as a reagent for the leaching of gold. The free cyanide ions were gradually released from the potassium ferrocyanide solution under the ultraviolet light. Orthogonal leaching experiments were performed in gold ore to analyse the effect of solution pH, potassium ferrocyanide dosage, and temperature in potassium ferrocyanide solution system under UV light. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to explore the role of potassium ferrocyanide in gold leaching, Optimised results showed that the gold recovery reached 67.74% in a high-alkaline environment at a 12.6 pH, 3.8 kg/t potassium ferrocyanide dosage, 62°C, and irradiance of 10mW/cm-2. The gold leaching kinetics was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) of potassium ferrocyanide solution. The results indicate that the gold extraction process consists of two processes: adsorption and leaching, and a rigid adsorption layer formed on the reaction surface. Furthermore, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the gold sensor surface after leaching reaction showed that -C≡N appears on the gold sensor surface, and the gold is oxidised to form AuCN complexes. The venue was the Auditorium 100 at the campus of the Vaal Triangle Technikon in Vanderbijlpark. Project and contract management A Project and Contract Management Conference is to be held on 19th and 20th September, 1989, at the C SIR, Pretoria. Powder metallurgy The PM 90 exhibition is to be held in Wembley, London, from 2nd to 6th July, 1990. The wide range of powders, processing machinery, and powder-metallurgy components at the exhibition will reflect the growth in this highly specialist industry. Castings and forgings Exhibition organizers, FMJ International Publications Ltd, are set to build upon the success of Castings & Forgings '88, which was held as a joint event with Pat- Cast '88. "As part of the mining engineering curriculum, students are required to be placed in industry for vacation work or work-integrated learning (WIL). In this paper we review work-based placement as done at the four South African mining schools: the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of South Africa.Key aspects of past and current WIL (pre- and post-graduation) practices that may need attention are highlighted for consideration by all universities that provide professional qualifications. Work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, workplace learning, and simulated work experiences are discussed as legitimate approaches to WIL.Regardless of the choice each institution makes, commitments of universities, preparedness of university teachers, and the desire for equity and excellence will play an important role in the provision of WIL.DefinitionsAccredited Qualification: a qualification awarded on successful completion of an accredited programme.Advisory Boards (or Committees): are essential infrastructure for a WIL curriculum that is built on the integration of the workplace and the university. This requires the collaboration of experts from both environments. Open pit slope stability analyses for large scale instabilities are often carried out using limit equilibrium, finite element or finite difference computer programs. All of these require empirical estimates of rock mass shear strength when calibrated values are not available, which is a common occurrence. A common method of estimating rock mass shear strength is the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which often over- or underestimates rock mass shear strength when used in limit equilibrium or elastic linearly plastic slope stability analyses, resulting in published alternative estimates for the coefficients of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. This paper investigates the differences between limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic slope stability analysis based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The investigation consisted of a comparison of 3840 RS2 finite element analysis models completed with strain softening, and 216 Slide2 limit equilibrium models. The models were used to evaluate a methodology to determine equivalent limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic shear strength parameters that provide the same stable slope angles and instability back break distances as the more representative strain softening stress analysis methods. This paper presents the methodology and compiles the results into design charts and equations for equivalent limit equilibrium Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters, that simplify calibration against actual case studies. The results compare well with older empirical shear strength estimates, however, a detailed calibration of the results against case studies will need to be carried out. The analysis also did not consider pore pressure effects; this is left for future publication.

Methane explosions in underground coal mines are a major concern across the mining industry. After the Pike River disaster, Arnot Coal became even more aware of the explosion risk. To determine whether Arnot has adequate precautions against a methane explosion, such as the one that led to the Pike River disaster, a literature survey covering the causes of the incident and what preventative measures should have been in place was conducted. Many different methane explosion prevention methods were evaluated, as well as codes of practice. Based on the findings, Arnot?s measures to prevent conditions favourable for a methane explosion were evaluated.

"A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation.Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression.The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be Possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficiaL."

Global trends stipulate the need to optimize existing assets while reducing environmental impacts. This paper illustrates the procedure that was followed to achieve such goals at one of the coal burning flash dryer units at an Anglo American smelter. An in-depth study of the process and related literature led to the development and installation of a revised control philosophy. This system includes modifications to the existing regulatory control structure as well as a hybrid rule-based and model-predictive advanced process control (APC) layer. Since commissioning of the APC, this flash dryer?s average throughput has increased by more than 6%, despite higher feed moistures. Furthermore, even though coal consumption has increased slightly, operating efficiency has improved by close to 5%. This was made possible by improving stability of the drying column outlet temperature by approximately 40%, which in turn enabled selection of a more optimal setpoint. Recent data has shown that APC utilization now exceeds 95%. This is indicative of a successful controller installation with good site acceptance. The same philosophy has therefore since been rolled out to most of the other flash dryers in the group.

South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

The number and scale of backfilling operations in the South African gold mining industry have grown rapidly in recent years. The application of backfilling as a means of stope support in a wide range of geological conditions and mining systems has resulted in the development of a variety of alternative fill systems. Experience gained in the evaluation of operating fill systems has contributed to a knowledge of the essential concepts to be considered in their design. This knowledge can also influence management's perception of what is expected of a backfilling system. The factors to be assessed in stating and satisfying these objectives are examined. The areas of investigation cover the selection of a suitable material, its preparation, distribution and placement, and the engineering logistics involved in the management of such a system. Finally, the integration of a filling system with an existing mining operation is examined.

Fracturing of the rock caused considerable difficulties during the boring of a deep-level tunnel in hard rock. A pilot bore was suggested as a possible means of reducing the effect of the fracturing, and this possibility was investigated theoretically by means of a three-dimensional elastic stress analysis. Failure criteria were applied to the results of this analysis, and it was found that fractures predicted by the use of a simple criterion of limiting tensile macrostrain criterion agreed remarkably well with in situ observation. It was concluded that fracture could not be avoided and that a pilot bore was likely to aggravate tunnelling conditions.

A school on the principles and practices of ladle metallurgy, organized by the Technical Committee: Metals Technology of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held at the University of Pretoria from 13th to 16th November, 1989. The course leader, Professor R.J. Fruehan from the Carnegie Melon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, presented the main part of the course. Three papers were read by local steelmakers on the experience gained in the field of ladle metallurgy in South Africa. The School also included a special half day seminar on new and innovative steelmaking and casting processes presented by Professor Fruehan.

Over a period of three years, since samples first became available, laboratory and pilot plant experiments have been conducted to develop a method of treatment to recover copper and zinc in saleable grades of concentrates from the Prieska complex sulphide orebody. These experiments have been based on adaptations of principles investigated by research workers and applied to similar ore types throughout the world. The differential flotation process finally worked out involves a comparatively coarse grind, flotation of the copper at near-neutral pH with the use of a zinc-cyande sphalerite depressant, followed by flotation of the reactivated sphalerite. This procedure has had such success that the construction of a full-scale plant is proceeding with confidence that the small-scale operations will be duplicated or improved upon. It is to be expected that the large plant will follow the pattern of almost every flotation plant that has been built in that modifications to the circuitry and reagent systems will be made as experience is gained.

The behaviour of mild steel in aqueous cyanide solutions similar to caustic cyanide elution solutions was investigated at high temperature in electrochemical experiments. The anodic polarization diagrams of mild steel indicated that steel may undergo active dissolution under these conditions. The rare occurrence of gold plating in practice is the result of the limiting of the anodic dissolution of the steel by the presence of a passive layer on the steel. This passive layer is stable only in a certain potential range, and the free corrosion potential attained determines whether the steel will be passive or active. For conditions typical of elution columns, several corrosion potentials are possible, depending primarily on the initial condition of the steel and the concentration of oxygen in the solution. If these conditions result in the formation of a passive layer on the steel, changes in concentration and temperature will not necessarily result in plating since the layer may exist in a metastable form.

Bracken Gold Mine ceased mining operations during February 1993. The clean-up of the gold plant, which had already commenced in September 1992, was completed in January 1994. The mine had been in production since early in 1962 but, because of a decreasing ore reserve, increasing working costs, and a relatively low gold price, closure had become inevitable. The closure had been under consideration since August 1983, when the first estimate was made regarding the amount of gold that could be recovered from the clean-up operations. Until that stage, it had been accepted that Bracken would conform to the commonly accepted idea that 0.25% of the total gold produced by the plant would be recovered during the clean-up operation. This idea was dispelled when the initial estimates indicated that the gold recovery would vary between 0.049 and 0.095%. The actual figure realized was 0.036%, showing that there is no generalforl1ula for the calculation of the amount of gold to be recovered from such clean-up operations. During the clean-up operation, Bracken became an unexpected contributor to the State's Reconstruction and Development Programme by having al the mine and plant buildings purchased and converted into a community development centre. This shortene4 the time available for the clean-up, and several of the buildings remained intact. However, the foundations and sub-soils had been sampled extensively, and it is considered that no recoverable gold was left behind.

This paper explores the behaviour of methane in the goaf during longwall mining, together with some methods for the control of methane emissions into the goaf, the working face, and the ventilation system. Experimental work done at Twistdraai Colliery, Sasol Coal, is referred to, as well as the gas-drainage system being practised at West Cliff Colliery in New South Wales, Australia. Gas drainage is discussed briefly, and certain suggestions are made in regard to coal mining in South Africa.
