Chromium resources in the United States are estimated at 1.8 million tons of recoverable chromium contained in 22.5 million tons of chromite-bearing material. Additional resource is presumed existent in large, but as yet undetermined, quantities of material containing less than 10 percent Cr203. No domestic resources are being mined presently (1969). Excluding transportation charges to domestic consuming areas, the total 1.8 million tons of chromim is estimated to be available, in ore or concentrate, at costs up to $0.64 per pound; 63 percent of the total is available under $0.11 per pound; and 38 percent under $0.08 per pound. It is judged that transportation from the resource areas to the existing market centers would add nearly $0.05 to the cost of a pound of chromium contained in ore or concentrate. Technically effective beneficiation methods have been developed for much of the known domestic resource, and further development might reduce costs of processing these materials. However, at present, domestic chromium resources are noncompetitive with foreign sources.

The design of a dual-inlet system for a Consolidated model 21-103C mass spectrometer is described in detail. The system permits both high-mass and low-mass samples to be run by using a single instrument. The difficulties of using a single instrument for both purposes are given and a method of minimizing these difficulties through the use of the present design is discussed, After examining the experience of five years of use, the conclusions are that the bimodal operation is practical and the low-mass analyses had nearly the same precision as before the modifications to the instrument were made. In 1951, O'Neal and Wier.5/ published the first description of the modifications made to a mass spectrometer so that the spectra of hydrocarbons with molecular weights up to 600 could be obtained. Further discussion of the equipment of O'Neal appeared in 1953.6/ Also, Brown, Melpolder, and Young7/ described a parallel inlet system designed to reduce sorption effects at room temperature.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.

"Inhaled dust particles of appropriate size contact cells of the alveolar region.' The acute response to coal dust appears to involve a variety of cell types, including alveolar epithelial cells, interstitial fibroblasts, both resident and recruited macrophages, and cells of the immune system. Direct and indirect effects of dust, which may be mediated by soluble factors,'' can initiate acute and long-term lung injury. While it appears that epithelial cell growth and differentiation, along with integrity of the epithelial basement membrane, may play a role in the long-term response to dust exposure, little is known of the role the alveolar epithelium may play in the progression of injury. The broad hypothesis that underlies these experiments is that short- and long-term consequences of coal dust exposure involve changes in structure and function of the alveolar epithelium and the underlying extracellular matrix. Recent studies show that coal dusts exert direct effects to modify pulmonary epithelial cell-extracellular matrix interactions in vitro.3EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURESType II cells isolated on day 0 by density centrifugation and differential attachment4 were plated overnight in D MEM containing 10% fetal calf serum before exposure to anthracite dust PSOC 867 sonicated into culture medium (750 ug/mL).3 Synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins was determined on day 3 of primary culture, as detailed elsewhere. 5 Cells were removed from extracellular matrix by extraction with NH4OH and high salt. Extracellular matrix synthesis and fibronectin content were evaluated based on radiolabeling with 3 H-leucine and on Western blot analysis, respectively. Additional analytical methods and calculations are detailed elsewhere.3-5"

This report covers the character, properties, origin, occurrence, and uses of the traprocks and describes briefly the methods and equipment employed in quarrying and preparing them for market. Production of traprock occupies an important place in industry. In 1960 the output in the form of crushed stone reached nearly 58 million tons valued at $87 million. Traprocks are also shaped into blocks of dimension stone for monuments, building construction and decoration, and specialized products such as surface plates.

The Bureau of Mines is currently conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate all aspects of recovering gold from large, low-grade deposits in the Golden Sunlight area, Whitehall mining district, Jefferson County, Mont. Prior to World War II this area produced significant quantities of gold. The study includes geologic mapping, diamond drilling, assaying, computer analysis of assay data, metallurgical research and ore testing, mine and mill planning, and an economic evaluation of all factors bearing on the establishment of a producing gold mine. Preliminary evaluation of the deposit indicates about 31 million tons of submarginal gold resources. American Exploration and Mining Co. (AMEX) has assisted the Bureau in this project by providing drill site preparation, control assays, and geological aid for the Bureau's exploration work and by furnishing comprehensive assay information of the property and copies of base and geologic maps. This report presents the geology and mining history of the area, together with a summary of Bureau work in progress.

As a part of the general chromite investigation in California designed to aid In the production of chromite during the recent war emergency, the Bureau of Mines explored the Coggins property in Siskiyou County, Work by the Bureau in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey began in October 1942 and was concluded in March 1943. This report presents a brief history of the mine, outlines the physical features of the district, describes the deposits) and explains the work completed by the Bureau of Mines, Table 1 shows the analysis of diamond drill-hole samples. The logs of drill holes are in the appendix.

"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Refuge chambers may potentially save the lives of miners during a mine emergency. For this reason, it is crucial that miners know how to operate them. Unfortunately, because refuge chambers provide so many services, they can be very complicated and difficult to operate. Therefore, NIOSH has created this document with suggestions for developing manuals and educational materials. A multidisciplinary team comprised of NIOSH engineers, sociologists, psychologists, health communication professionals, and geologists developed the recommendations contained in this document. These recommendations are based on an evaluation of manufacturers? instruction manuals from both the U.S. and globally, interviews with over 20 mining and safety experts, and an extensive literature review. This research, focused on the best practices for refuge chambers, led to the formulation of this document. It is intended to offer suggestions to manufacturers and mine operators on how to create effective and easy-to-understand training manuals for miners as well as tips to create the most comfortable and usable refuge chambers. It should be noted that these recommendations are not meant to substitute for manufacturer-supplied materials but rather to be used in conjunction with manufacturer?s materials. Manufacturers should always be consulted for up-to-date information about their chamber. Although different states and different mines refer to underground refuges by different names, this guide will simply refer to underground refuges nearest to the face as refuge chambers, whether inflatable from a skid or constructed from steel. Other popular terms for refuge chambers are rescue chambers, rescue shelters, and refuge shelters. Refuges that are nearer to the shaft, whether a prefabricated refuge chamber or one built into a crosscut, will be referred to as outby refuges because of their location in the mine. Outby refuges can be permanent, semipermanent, or portable and are usually located at every other SCSR cache. Outby refuges are sometimes called hardened rooms, outby shelters, and in-place shelters. When discussing outby refuges and refuge chambers collectively, this guide will refer to them as underground refuges. Other terms for underground refuges include refuge alternatives, locations of safety, and safe havens. This document is designed to be read either cover to cover or by specific section. It is recommended that on first read, this guide be read cover to cover. In subsequent readings, manufacturers and mine operators may find it easier to use the table of contents page to locate specific information on parts of the refuge chamber.

Research was done by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of a low-molecular-weight polymer on wet grinding of quartz, dolomite, and a copper ore. A 5-in ball mill equipped with a torque sensor for precise measurement of input energy was used for batch grinding tests. Grinding parameters were determined from size distribution data on the feed material and ground product. Zeta potential measurements were made to determine the effect of the polymer on the surface properties of the three materials, and a viscometer was used to measure the effect of the polymer on slurry viscosity. The addition of the polymer caused a sharp increase in the negative value of the zeta potential for all three materials, indicating that pronounced adsorption was taking place. At a constant slurry percent solids, addition of the polymer caused a similar reduction in slurry viscosity for each material. For quartz, dolomite, and the copper ore, grinding efficiency, as measured by kilogram of product per kilowatt hour passing a given screen size, was not affected by the addition of the polymer. However, the lowering in slurry viscosity caused by addi-tion of the polymer permits grinding at a higher slurry percent solids.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1943 as part of the Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3736 under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Previous to June 30, 1943." This list included 180 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to December 31, 1945, placed 10 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permis- sible list as a result of tests and changes in brand names.. Twelve permis- sible explosives were transferred from the active. to the inactive list. The present list contains 178 brand names. Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 3S0 meters (1150 ft.) and 488 meters (1600 ft.). The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broadband, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or F layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane.

Analysis of the data produced by a wide-band, sensitive, horizontal, biaxial motion sensor has revealed several distinctive patterns before, during, and after a roof fall. The signals prior to the roof fall are similar in spectra, but one thousand times larger in amplitude, than those after the roof fall. Immediately preceding the roof fall, by two to twelve hours, five events occurred which were larger in amplitude and lower in frequency than even the large pre-roof fall background signals. An interpretation of these events is offered.

This Bureau of Mines investigation determined the effects of so-called annealing at high temperatures on radon-222 emanation from domestic uranium ores. Concurrently, a method was developed for closely estimating the emanation coefficients of hot samples from measurements of their gamma activity after cooling. Emanation coefficients of 102 samples from 14 domestic areas of past, present, and possible future uranium production were investigated using modifications of the closed-can, gamma-only assay method at and after cooling from 100° to 1,000° C. True annealing probably does not occur below 500° C. In limited investigations at 500° C and above, effects of annealing are masked by the effects of other parameters. Emanation is commonly less at one or more of the steps investigated in the 100° to 500° C range than before heating. This decrease is tentatively attributed to water loss at temperatures dependent upon the minerals present. The average sample emanates least at 300° C; emanation increases with higher temperatures to at least 900° C. Emanation decreases sharply on cooling, but it is partially restored by prolonged exposure to the atmosphere at room temperature. Higher than average emanation of coffinite ores at 500° C and above may be related to destruction of the coffinite crystal structure.

This experiment investigated the effects of different machine mounted area lighting technologies on visual performance. The primary objective was to conduct a comparative evaluation of the lighting technologies based on the visual performance of thirty-six human subjects in a simulated underground mine environment. Incandescent (Incand), fluorescent (Fluor), and light-emitting diode (LED) technologies were used to create four lighting combinations. Visual performance was quantified for the detection of movement in the peripheral field of view and the identification of ground hazards. Measurements were made of the speed [response time measured in milliseconds (ms)], the accuracy (the number of targets and objects missed), and the subjective discomfort rating of the glare experienced for each lighting combination. A secondary objective explored the effects of aging on visual performance. The results indicate that lighting combinations which consisted of LED area lights significantly improved visual performance for the detection of hazards found in the peripheral field of view, as well as those found on the ground. They furthermore, indicate that age plays a significant role in visual performance.

"The realization that fuel costs, high as compared with those enjoyed prior to the war, are apparently permanent, has caused steam power plant operators to apply their best efforts towards improving the fuel economy of their plants.Though they have given much attention to the reduction in combustion losses by improving methods of firing and improved equipment, and to diminishing the heat losses by more care in maintaining clean heating surfaces and tight and adequate baffling, they have almost universally neglected the waste that occurs from discarding unconsumed combustible with the boiler refuse.This loss varies between extremely wide limits, depending on the quality of the coal, the type of plant and the firing practice in general, the higher the ash content of the coal the greater will be the amount of combustible appearing in the refuse, and the losses will be greater as the boilers are driven at higher ratings. The refuse from stoker fired boilers is apt to have a lower aver-eve percentage of combustible than that from hand fired boilers if operated at the same rating, but stoker fired boilers are usually pushed to higher ratings and the combustible in the refuse will run higher.In actual operating practice the amount of unconsumed combustible in the boiler refuse may range from a few percent to as high as forty or fifty percent. In an informal statement one well known combustion engineer estimates that the average amount of combustible in the refuse from a large stoker fired central station boiler plant is about 15 or 20%. Assuming that the coal burned contains 12% of ash, and allowing for flue dust losses, approximately two percent of the coal will be lost through this channel. The operating engineer of one large modern central power plant reports that when burning coal of about the same ash content, the average amount of combustible in the refuse was in the neighborhood of 33%, en tailing a loss of approximately 4% of the heating value of the fuel fired. Where the coal used daily runs up into hundreds of tons, an appreciable economy could be effected by recovering this percentage."

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 144 natural gas samples from 19 States. Of the total samples, 139 were collected during calendar year 1990. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1990. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

The Bureau of Mines investigated electrolytic techniques for preparing diborides of the group IV B metals. TiB2, ZrB2, and HfB2 were electro-deposited from their respective oxides dissolved in borate-chloride-cryolite electrolytes. Titanium diboride was also electrodeposited from rutile (Ti02) dissolved in a Na2,B4O7-Na2C03-Na3A1F6-NaC1 electrolyte at 1,050° C; 14 kW-hr were required to produce 1 pound of TiB2. Major impurities in the TiB2 produced in a 10-deposition cycle experiment, in weight-percent, were Al, 0.2; Cr, 0.3; Fe, 0.1; V, 0.3; C, 1.4; and 0, 1.0. Zirconium diboride was electro-deposited from zircon (ZrSiO4) dissolved in a Na2B407-NaOH-Na3A1F6-NaCl-NaF electrolyte at 1,050° C. The ZrB2 produced in a 10-deposition cycle experiment contained the following impurities in weight-percent; Fe, 0.1; Si, 0.5; C, 0.3; and 0, 0.6. Energy required to produce 1 pound of ZrB2 was 9.3 kW-hr.
