Epoxy and polyester-type resins were injected into coal-mine roof strata of the thick Freeport coal seam in Allegheny County, Pa., at test sites in roof that had been exposed several weeks, in newly exposed roof, and in strata over solid coal. Test results indicate that the method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof by injecting a bonding material into the roof strata can be developed into a safe, efficient support system. If roof bonding will become a standardized method of roof support and reinforcement or if it can be effective when used with other types of roof support can be determined only by extensive experimentation in various coal beds. Observations and conclusions are shown at the end of this report.

The Pittsburgh carbonization laboratory of the Bureau of Mines has determined the expansion or contraction of more than 300 coking coals in a modified Bethlehem-type sole-heated expansion tester. Information on the actions of coals or blends of coals when coked is extremely valuable to operators of commercial-scale coke ovens. Coals that expand abnormally or beyond expectations can cause extensive damage to coke ovens and result in costly shutdowns and repairs. Although test results for many of the coals have been given in various Bureau of Mines publications, considerable information was not published. Thus, it is the purpose of this report to furnish coal operators and the coking industry with a current appraisal of the expanding properties of all coals tested by the Bureau before September 1, 1958. These data should be useful in the normal long range planning of coal and coke production and will be essential if the demand for coking coals increases abnormally or when reserves of higher grade coals are depleted.

The Bureau of Mines, in pursuing its goal of extending the life span of strategic materials, conducted field corrosion studies at the East Mesa Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) in the Imperial Valley, Calif., to determine the optimum materials of construction for use in geothermal mineral energy resource recovery plants. These studies included characterization of geothermal environments and in situ corrosion testing. The corrosion resistance of 10 alloys exposed to 5 brine and steam process environments was evaluated using the low-salinity, high-temperature brine from geothermal well Mesa 6-1. Of these alloys, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy S, Incone1 625, titanium-2nickel, and 316 L stainless steel had excellent resistance to corrosion in all of the process environments; E-Brite 26-1 and 430 stainless steel had fair resistance. Although general corrosion rates for 4130 steel and 1020 carbon steel were substantially higher than those of the other iron-base alloys, these two alloys could prove useful in low-salinity process environments because of their low cost. Aluminum alloy 5005 was the least corrosion resistant alloy and pitted severely. Scales formed on all of the alloys in every process environment. Calcite, aragonite, and an amorphous silicate were the major components of the scales.

The southeastern region of the United States is becoming more important as a petroleum-producing area, and it is receiving increasing attention from oil operators. In 1948 total production of crude oil from six southeastern States - Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia - was 55,244,000 barrels, which represents 2.7 percent of the Nation's output during that year. Kentucky and Tennessee have produced crude oil since the early days of the industry, but the remaining four States have had production only few years. Data on annual production of crude petroleum in the six States are given in table 1.

This information circular describes open-pit mining methods and practices of the Bagdad Copper Corp., Yavapai County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A brief history of the Eureka district and of early developments at the [gdad] mine is given, and the are deposit is described with particular emphasis on those characteristics (physical, economic, or engineering) that affected the choice of mining methods. Prospecting, exploration, and sampling and estimating the tonnage and grade are outlined. Development of the open-pit mine is shown. Mining methods, including breaking ground, primary drilling and blasting, secondary drilling and blasting, loading, transportation, engineering, and operating control, are described. A brief summary of mining equipment is given. Percentage of extraction, production rate, mine drainage and water supply, wage, contract, and bonus systems, safety and fire prevention, and the processing plant also are described. The last section gives a breakdown of such costs as are available for publication.

This publication is intended to be of value to the mineral industry in establishing and maintaining effective programs for preventing noise-induced hearing loss. Factors involved in this loss and the need for and the requirements of an effective hearing conservation program are discussed. The legal and legislative history of compensation for hearing loss is briefly reviewed. A review of statutes is not attempted since several States have recently modified) or are in the process of modifying their laws regarding permissible noise exposures) required hearing protection) and/or compensation for hearing loss. A review of other aspects of the problem of industrial noise in terms of medical, physiological) and psychological frames of reference is included. A hearing conservation program is described in detail. Appendixes detailing the names and addresses of a few equipment suppliers are included. References are provided for those who may wish to delve more deeply into the medical, technical, and scientific considerations of noise and its effect on man.

The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the Items is confidential. It present's analytical data for 4,608 samples, representing the products of 101 companies. The samples were collected during December 1956, January and February 1957. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the Notional Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the post 10 years is given on page 5.

This report describes the development, construction and testing of a hydrogen-fueled underground mining vehicle. A hydrogen burning engine and a hydride fuel system, both previously developed, were installed on a modified utility vehicle, together with the necessary controls. In tests and in actual use, the vehicle performance in terms of speed, acceleration, and gradeability exceeded that of the standard, unmodified vehicle.

The use of extended workdays (regular shift lengths of 10 or 12 h (hour), while still maintaining a 4O-h workweek) in mining operations is attracting growing interest in the United States. There is very little doubt that extended workdays is a very popular alternative among the work force because of the significant increase in days off, including weekends, especially when compared with traditional rotation schedules of working seven straight shifts or having only one weekend off every 4 to 6 weeks. However, there are some serious concerns by management, workers, unions, and various governmental policymakers that working 10-or 12-h days may create an added risk of accidents and health problems. The U.S. Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature studies related to the safety and performance issues of extended workdays. This report presents a summary of those findings. The studies examined in this review are divided into three sections: (1) laboratory, (2) field, and (3) accident and injury analysis. In general, results are inconclusive. Studies have shown both positive and negative effects. It is concluded, therefore, that in industries such as mining where accidents are a serious concern, special measures and evaluation in the use of extended workdays be considered.

This study was made to present the mining methods and costs of a uranium mine typical of other mines in the highly productive Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison formation in New Mexico. Four mining methods have been used at the Section 23 mine: the retreat- room-and-pillar method, a sublevel-slicing method (also called top-slicing), the horizontal-cut-and-fill method, and a modification of the ring-drill method. The application of the methods at this mine and at other mines in the area should be of benefit to operators with similar problems. Ore bodies in the Section 23 mine are irregularly shaped and vary in size, in rock strength, in moisture content, and in uranium concentrations; different mining methods are required and mining costs are not constant. A 6-month period of operation at the Section 23 mine was analyzed and mining costs, not including amortization, depreciation, or Federal taxes, averaged about $6.80 per ton.

In the course of its investigations of the fuel resources in the United States and of the methods by which these resources could be utilized with greatest efficiency, the United States Geological Survey tested a great variety of coals and lignites as gas-producer fuel. Early in these testa it was found that many factors controlling the formation of gas in the generating chamber of the producer and, consequently, having a direct bearing on the management of producer-gas plants, were not as well understood as they should be. The Geological Survey therefore took up a detailed investigation of the chemical and physical processes that take place in the producer, keeping in view not only the possibility of increasing the efficiency of the producer as a source of energy, and the ensuing benefits to the public of cheaper power and greater utilization of low-grade fuels, but also the application of the results to the problems of boiler-furnace operations. - The Bureau of Mines, to which the testing and analyzing of fuels as carried on by the United States Geological Survey has been transferred, is continuing producer-gas investigations at the testing station at Pittsburg, Pa. Results of the gas-producer tests a made at the coal-testing plant erected at St. Louis, Mo., and of a study of some of the problems° that came up in the tests have been published by the Geological Survey. Results of the tests made at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa., and of further studies of particular problems, will be published by the Bureau of Mines. In the gas producer solid fuel is transformed into more readily combustible gaseous fuel. The transformation is relatively slow and consists of several processes: 1. The distillation of the volatile hydrocarbons from the freshly fired fuel at relatively low temperatures. 2. The combustion of the fuel by its combining with the oxygen of the air forming carbon dioxide (COO. 3. The formation of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (11 3), the essential constituents of producer gas, in accordance with the equations:

"SUMMARYFollowing a magnetometer survey on the McCoy iron deposit, a trenching and drilling program was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in August 1944.This deposit is 32.3 miles southwest of Battle Mountain in the McCoy Mining District, Lander County, Nevada, and lies on the east flank of the Fish Creek Mountains at an altitude of 5,400 feet, about 1 1/2 miles south of the gold camp of McCoy.Total production from the deposit has been 400 tons of magnetite, mined by hand and shipped to the west coast for ship's ballast.Bureau drilled two holes to a total depth of 92 feet and excavated 12 feet of trenches. Both holes were drilled in the same ore body and engineered magnetite ore 14 and 11 feet thick. Trenching was used successfully to show the lateral limits of the ore.Magnetite ore bodies were found to occur as replacements of a limestone bed in quartzite. They outcrop near and parallel to the exposure of a diorite entrusting that forms a long westward-trending ridge. Although magnetic outcrops can be traced for 5,000 feet trenching definitely proved the ore bodies to be disconnected to have little or no lateral extent beyond their outcrops. Only two ore bodies more than 10 feet thick were found; one of these is the inaccessible to and the other was drilled by the Bureau."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report presents a concise review on sources, processes, supply, and historical use patterns of domestic cadmium. It also covers a preliminary estimated cadmium material flow for the year 1989. This preliminary study contains information on cadmium and cadmium-bearing products in the United States. The data in this report were obtained from both published and/or unpublished sources of information. However, in order to estimate the fate of cadmium in each operation or application stage, some assumptions, judgments, and correlations were made by the USBM in an attempt to determine the material flows losses.

The size and accessibility of the Minnesota manganiferous iron ore deposits make them attractive as a potential source of erromanganese, which is essential in the production of steel. For several years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting experiments to determine the feasibility of producing ferromanganese from these ores by a three-step process which involves (1) the smelting of the ores in the blast furnaoe to produce a high-phosphorus spiegel; (2) the treatment of the spiegel produced from step 1 in an electric or open-hearth furnace to separate the manganese from the phosphorus and the iron; and 3) the smelting of the high-manganese slag from step 2 to produce forromanganese. The details of the first two steps of the process and the results of tests with the experimental furnaces Lave been given in previous reports.5 The m$ or part of the experimental work on the second step has been conducted in a half-ton open-hearth furnace. Some preliminary tests showed, however, that the electric furnace has some distinct advantages over the open hearth for producing, from high-phosphorus spiegel, a slag containing from 45 to 55 per cent manganese and phosphorus and iron in amounts required for ferro-grade ore. The electric furnace tests described in this paper were made to get more information as to the possibilities of the electric furnace in connection with this problem and to study the fluxing effect of alumina on high-manganese slags. Herty, Conley, and Royer have reported' results of laboratory tests which showed that slags containing from 60 to 75 per cent MnO, from 8 to 10 per cent S102, and small amounts of CaO MgO, and FeO, were sufficiently fluid at 1,450° to 1,550° C. to pour readily if 12 to 14 per cent alumina was present. In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a mine located in Ohio using a large stripping dragline, and truck and front-end loader (FEL) is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to mine planning and coal production. On the basis of the simulations, it was concluded that the production from the haulback operation should be increased to accommodate improvements in both the stripping dragline's availability and mean cycle time. Several alternatives were studied for the best use of equipment if the present operating parameters could not be improved upon. No economic analysis of these proposals were made.

Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. Disasters such as occurred at Oppau, Germany, in 1921, at Tessenderloo, Belgium, in 1942, and in this country at Texas City, Tex., in 1947 clearly indicate the explosive hazard associated with the manufacture, storage, and transport at ion of ammonium nit rate The importance and extent of the hazard may be Judged from the large amount of ammonium nitrate produced and transported annually in this country. Between July 1, 1947, and June 30, 1948, it was estimated that the United States produced 461,528 tons of ammonium nitrate commercially for agricultural purposes alone .5/ In addition, U. S. Army Ordnance plants have manufactured and shipped 779,730 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer to Germany, Japan, and Korea.6/
