In undermined urban areas, new solutions to subsidence problems are being sought. The Bureau of Mines is investigating a hydraulic backfilling technique whereby fill material is pumped as a slurry through a closed system and widely distributed in inaccessible mine workings from a single borehole. A full-scale demonstration was completed in 1973 in Scranton, Pa., which is underlain by abandoned anthracite mines in several coalbeds superposed one above another. A 30-acre residential area was stabilized by injecting about 450,000 cubic yards of crushed mine refuse into two coalbeds through five injection boreholes. Nearly 200,000 cubic yards was injected through one borehole from which the material moved into the mine workings on all sides; the injected material reached a maximum lateral distance of 640 feet and filled mine openings from floor to roof. In the gravity-feed method formerly used to backfill inaccessible mine workings, quantities of fill injected per borehole averaged about 300 cubic yards. The gravity-feed method required many closely spaced injection holes and provided incomplete filling. The new method, designed for inundated mines, proved successful also in mine workings about mine-water pool level. TO ASSIST users in the selection of reliable and satisfactory respiratory protective devices, the Bureau of Mines bas established five schedules of minimum performance requirements for the approval of respirators. The current revisions of these schedules3 include 13D for self-contained breathing apparatus, 141F for gas masks, 19B and the amendments to 19B for supplied- air respirators, 21B for dust, fume, and mist respirators, and 23B for chemical cartridge respirators. Copies of these schedules may be obtained from the Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Section, 4800 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa., 15213. Approval tests on respirators are performed only at the request of the manufacturer4 of the respirator and at his expense. If the device meets the approval requirements, a certificate of approval is granted on the complete respirator. This certificate states that as long as the respirator is manufactured as originally approved, or in accordance with any changes covered by an extension of the original approval, the manufacturer may advertise and sell his respirator as being approved by the Bureau of Mines. Many industries and regulatory agencies require that respirators approved by the Bureau of Mines he used where respiratory protection is needed. The Bureau of Mines, however, has no regulatory power over the use of the respirators that it approves. It acts as an impartial testing agency to insure the availability of suitable and safe respirators.

The Metaline mining district was examined in 1942 by Bureau of Mines engineers with the cooperation of geologists of the Federal Geological Survey. Because the demands of war production were rapidly depleting reserves in some of the older zinc-lead producing districts of the United States, it was decided that an attempt should be made to increase the proved or indicated ore reserves of the Metaline district. With this objective, certain areas to be explored by diamond drilling were selected. The Bureau of Mines began work on this program. January 15, 1943; work terminated September 8, 1945. Forty-five holes were drilled in seven areas, The holes ranged from 154 feet to 2,050 feet in length. Their combined length was 38,150 feet. Thirty-three of the holes were drilled in. the North Pend Oreille and the West Bella May areas.

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies were designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena.4 This report is the fifth of a series5/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the constant pressure flame temperature of acetylene-air for a range of pressures.

A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the summer 1951 is presented in table 1, and for comparison, a similar summary for the summer 1950 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. As indicated, octane numbers of motor gasolines sold in the United states decreased approximately one-half to one octane unit from the record levels attained during the winter of 1950-51 and are a little below the octane numbers of summer 1950. However, average vapor pressures of the summer gasolines did not change, and certain distillation temperatures varied only slightly from those of the year before.

Engineered scavenger compounds (ESC's) developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are a novel class of compounds that selectively can recover a desired element from a solid or molten alloy. Lithium titanate (L2Ti307 or Li2O?3Ti02) is used as an ESC to recover lithium (Li) from aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that Li2Ti307 undergoes a phase change during scavenging from an orthorhombic structure to a hexagonal structure. This change is due to the incorporation of lithium in the matrix of the material and the effect of temperature. Although both phases are metastable, the hexagonal phase that forms during the scavenging of lithium from Al-Li alloys appears to be the more stable phase. Recovering lithium from the ESC by electrodeposition does not cause the structure to revert to the orthorhombic phase. The orthorhombic and the hexagonal structures of Li2Ti307 have similar scavenging capacities for lithium. This report proposes a new mechanism for the phase transformation.

The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.

The potential usefulness of reclaimed surface-mined land has received much attention recently. In an effort to develop a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials, specific mines in various regions of the U.S. were studied to determine the extent of current mined-land planning and to discover characteristics that are regional in nature. As part of this investigation, the Chinook Mine-West Field, located in western Indiana, has been studied. The Chinook Mine is presently operated by AMAX Coal Company and has been in continuous operation since 1928 under various ownership. The status of current reclamation and land use planning was reviewed. In addition, site planning principles were applied to the active mine area. This application included formation of a data base and development of postmining land use plan alternatives. Key factors affecting site potential realization for midwestern area mines have been identified along with suggestions for applying land use planning processes to mined-land planning.

"INTRODUCTION The Eva Tanguay property is in Crittenden County, Kentucky, about 1 mile south or the village of Mexico, and can be reached from Marion, the County seat, by travellng south on State Highway 91 for 6.8 miles and then turning southwest on State Highway 70 and traveling 2 miles farther.Although the property lies between the Huffaw and Pigmy properties, which together have produced 200,000 tons of fluorspar ore, production from the Eva Tanguay has been estimed at only 1,000 tons. Geological factors on the property indicated the likelihood of an ore occurrence, and the author examined the property in April 1944. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Geological Survey wrote a report on the property, which was not published. A drilling program was initiated by the Bureau of Mines November 1, 1944, and continued until eight holes totaling 3,137.5 feet were drilled.The holes showed that the Tubb fault system on the Eva Tanguay property is composed of three members, all of which contained commercial ore. The line dividing the Haffaw and Tanguay properties crosses the vein outcrops, causing a part of the ore indicated to be on each property.The mineral rights, which are leased by Robert Frazer of Marion, are owned by Mrs. O. S. Denny and W. C. Bohn, both of Marion."

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for Zambia for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work done through the Bureau of' Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J0225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) timber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and blasting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 19274 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil-, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein. Bulletin 2916 states that many oil producers and refiners use the word "base" much as it is used in pharmaceutical work. For example, the "base" or "basis" of an ointment or salve is the fatty material (lard, petroleum, or lanolin) used as a vehicle or carrier for the active medicinal principles. Apparently many of the pioneers in the petroleum industry considered crude oil similar in nature to these medicinal products in that it consists of a semisolid, nonvolatile base and 1 volatile portion can be distilled off to make gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Many crude oils when chilled slowly deposit a waxy material (paraffin); this fact may have been one reason for the use of the term "paraffin base" in referring to such oils. Almost all of the petroleum first discovered in the United States was of this nature; not until the oil industry was extended to California and along the Gulf coast was petroleum found that contained no wax but apparently did contain asphaltic material Accordingly, these oils were known as "asphalt-base" oils. The use of this term, however, seems unfortunate, as better-grade oils of this type contain little if any asphalt; the descriptive term "naphthene base" now seems to be a more desirable term than "asphalt base." The term "intermediate base" is also used commonly in referring to oils intermediate in oharacteristios between those of paraffin and naphthene base.

The Bureau of Mines t.ced its investigations into sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to define the scaling law for safe separation from detonating AN-FO. Both missile- and non-missile-producing AN-FO donors, weighing up to 5,400 pounds, were employed with acceptors of the same size. The usual cube-root scaling law was not confirmed; exponents for the relationship S = f(Wx) for AN were 0.51 with non¬missile-producing donors and 0.61 for missile-producing donors. For AN-FO an exponent of 0.80 was indicated in the missile-producing case. AN-F0 in polyethylene bags appeared somewhat more easily initiated than bulk AN-FO. The efficacy of barricades in protecting AN charges was investigated. detonation distances were reduced from one-third to one-seventh when filled barricades were employed. The investigation was extended to dynamite with both types of donors. With 1,600-pound missile-producing donors and an equivalent weight of dynamite, initiation would be expected in 50 percent of the trials at 167 feet. The corresponding value in the non-missile case was 67 feet. The data developed in this program of sympathetic detonation will allow the development of a rational set of safe separation distances for AN, AN-FO, and explosives.

The integrity of mine structures, such as the roofs, ribs, face and supporting pillars, is difficult to assess beyond the exposed surface. To mitigate potential rockfall hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is assessing the usefulness of Rayleigh wave dispersion analysis to detect damage and stress-relieved zones in mine structures. Classical surface wave dispersion modeling is utilized at both laboratory and field scales in damaged and undamaged material to assess the integrity of a mine pillar and roof. To more fully exploit Rayleigh wave propagation characteristics, derivation of a novel dispersion parameter was conducted using a convolutional model. The development of a suitable Rayleigh wave dispersion system based on insight derived from forward modeling is presented. The application of inverse modeling for damage and stress assessment in the mine environment is also discussed.

[Fugitive Just is generated alone unpaved mire reads from intermittent equipment traffic. Typically, the majority of such traffic consists of trucks hauling either mine product or waste [rum the surface mime pit and/or the processing plant. Fugitive dust generated along these unpaved mine roads includes particles of all sizes which become airborne. The potential hazards include the deleterious effects to human health of inhaled dust, traffic visibility hazards and environmental impacts on the localized area by the larger-sized visible airborne dust. Two held surveys were recently conducted to quantify fugitive dust generation and dispersion from truck traffic on unpaved and untreated mine haulage roads For these surveys., airborne glow sampling was conducted at multiple sampling fixations away from an unpaved haulage road at a limestone quarry/plant and at a coal mine preparation plant lo measure the size characteristics, concentrations. and dispersive behavior of the dust cloud generated from truck traffic- Results show that at least 80% of the airborne Just generated by haul trucks was larger than 10 µm- Airborne respirable, thoracic, and total dust concentrations all decreased and approached background concentrations 30.5 in (100 feet) from the road This report describes the average and instantaneous peak dust levels that were measured tip to 30.5m (100 feet) Iron the haulage road. This report presents a detailed study of low temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of an Australian coking coal. The coal studied was high-volatile B bituminous from the Foybrook mine, an open-cut operation in the Liddell seam, New South Wales, Australia. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, continuous vertical reactor at several temperatures from 960° to 1,300° F. It was demonstrated that this bituminous coal can be carbonized within this temperature range to produce tar and a nonagglomerated char, without prior oxidation or char recirculation. Carbonization rates from 138 to 287 lb/hr (as-carbonized basis) were investigated. It was found that the carbonization temperature and the air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values to insure continuous operation. At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coa1 ratios, part of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. On the moisture-and ash-free basis, the yield of tar plus light oil ranged from about 26 to 44 gallons per ton, and the char yield ranged from approximately 1,160 to 1,370 pounds per ton. The heat in the gas ranged from about 900 to 3,000 Btu/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal. Carbonization product yields correlated well with air-to-coal ratio and carbonization temperatures. The volatile matter in the char was found to be temperature dependent. At 1,300° F carbonization, the volatile matter in the char was 8.7 percent (dry basis), whereas at 9600 F carbonization, the residual volatile matter was about 16 to 18 percent (dry basis).

Wyoming County had for many years supplied large quantities of coking coals to coke plants throughout the eastern United States and Canada. Up to the present most of the coal has been produced from relatively few beds, but in the future the coal will be produced from beds not previously mined in quantity. This trend is shown in the entire Winding Gulf field, of which Wyoming County is a part. This publication is one of a series of Bureau of mines reports appraising the Nation's coking coal, which y be used to determine the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. This investigation of the preparation characteristics of Wyoming County coals is the third of the series undertaken in West Virginia.

The rapid; depletion of' known high-grade ore deposits in the Tri -State lead-zinc district and the recognized need for the development of additional reserves led the Bureau of Mines to make preliminary examination of sites possibly adaptable to low-cost open-pit mining methods. Abandoned mines whose ore deposits were known to have occurred at shallow depths naturally presented favorable test points for the development of possible open-pit orebodies. The Lone Elm mine was in this category.

Part 5, the last of this series, deals with the theoretical confirmation and application of results developed in parts 1 and 2. The bulk-sampling variances of Hassialis and Kassel and Guy are compared with those in part 2, both as to formulation and as applied to ores and coal. The results provide confirmation for much of the development in part 2. Examples are presented for determining the reliability of bulk samples with respect to various measurable characteristics. These characteristics include, for example, assays for elements or compounds and particle surface area. The bulk samples considered consist either of a given weight, a given volume, or a given number of particles. In addition to problems of sample reliability, some of these examples may also be applicable to quality control. Several possible applications of results developed in parts 1 and 2 are outlined. These include tests for random data, degree-of-mixing indices, and particle-fineness indices.
