Records show that systematic water flooding was begun as early as 1935 in Greenwood County and in 1937 in Butler County. Water flooding on some earlier projects in Greenwood County were described in a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation.2/ This report presents a discussion of 4 projects -2 in Butler County, 1 in Greenwood County, and 1 in Butler and Greenwood Counties. The location of these projects is shown in figure 1. The projects have been in operation 6 to 12 years and have recovered about 6.6 million barrels of additional oil from the injection of 84.7 million barrels of water. Three of the projects take advantage of the elevation of the nearby hilly terrain, and water from the treating ponds flows by gravity through the filters into the clear-water tanks. By utilizing gravity flow, fewer pumps and less electrical energy is required, resulting in more economical operation.

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. The metallurgy of manganese has developed along the lines of iron metal¬ lurgy. Enough high-grade ore has Been available so that by reduction with carbon it could be turned into an iron-ma.nga.nese alloy and a slag containing some 9 to 15 percent manganese. More siliceous ores have been smelted in the blast furnace to form iron-silicon-manganese alloys called spiegel. When lower-grade ores came in for serious consideration, which lias only been since l°l4, two types of processes received the most consideration — hydrometallurgical processes to produce a concentrate which could be smelted like the higher-grade ore and processes involving concentration of the manga¬ nese from manganiferous iron ores by preferential reduction of the iron (184)1. Special chapters in this bulletin are devoted to the production of ferro¬ manganese from ore, the hydrometallurgy cf manganese, and the Bureau of Mines modification of the preferential reduction process. Other methods of producing manganese alloys from low-grade or refractory ores have been suggested and may find future application. Manganese has a very high affinity for sulphur and is particularly adaptable to concentration by matte smelting. According to Betts (26), manganese silicate may be smelted with pyrite to give manganese sulphide and iron silicate. This method would be applicable to concentration of either the silicate or carbonate ores. The sulphide, once obtained, could be roasted to oxide and reduced in the usual way. Another possibility for the production of manganese from silicate ores involves their reduction by silicon or manganese silicides. Swedish Patent 52290, February 25, 1925. covers the reduction of a slag rich in manganese by silicon-manganese alloy containing more than 10 percent silicon, Joseph H. Brennan (38.) describes the concentration of manganese iron ores by partial reduction with silicon. Beckett (7,4,19) describes the reduction of manganese dioxide with a manganese silicide for the production of standard ferromanganese. Beckett gives as a typical alloy, manganese 64.4, silicon 24.6, and as a typi¬ cal ore, 5S.5O manganese as MnO^. The product of the reaction between these two is 80.11 percent manganese and 1.22 percent silicon.

"One of the functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to investigate the ability of electrical mining equipment to operate in a gassy mine without danger of igniting explosive atmospheres. To accomplish this purpose, tests are made in which mixtures of gas and air are ignited in the equipment while it is surrounded by explosive atmospheres of the same composition. In such tests, records of pressures developed by the internal ex-plosions are obtained and observations are made of any flames, sparks, or smoke which may issue from bearings and joints. Occasionally the explosion pressures in a mining machine rheostat or a compartment of some other machine reach a value which is judged to be excessive or abnormal.A number of factors are known to influence the explosion pressures, and both German and. British investigators have irate extensive research on their effects. Much of this work had been done with artificial compartment which certain conditions could c held, constant while others were being varied. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has not made any research on a scale to compare with that of the British or German investigators; however, special studies have been necessary from time to time to determine the cause and remedy for high pressures obtained in the routine test of some piece of mining machinery. Thus it has been possible to verify some of tee theories established on a purely experimental oasis by practical tests of machines as actually built for mine use.Some of the factors determined the pressure that will result when an explosive mixture in a compartment or connected compartment is ignited are: (1) The volume of explosive mixture ignited, (2) the percentage of as in the mixture, (3) the amount of coal-dust in the compartment or compartments, (4) the degree of movement or turbulence of the mixture at the time of ignition, (6) tightness of the joints and bearings, (6) the size of opening between, compartments, (7) the distance between the point of ignition and openings, and (8) the cooling, effect of surfaces and of material inclosed in the compartments."

This report, which covers the period from June 15, 1974 to May 30, 1975, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of Contract No. H0242065 and modifications 1, 2, and 3 thereto. The purpose of the original contract was to equip the second shuttle car in the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine, section 6R, with a refined design canopy and seats. In addition, several refinements and improvements were to be designed and installed at the same location on the cutter and the loader. However, during October 1974 in response to a request from the Technical Project Officer, the contract was modified to eliminate all of the cutter and loader tasks and substitute the design, fabrication, and installation of an improved canopy on the no. 2 roof drill in the above mentioned section of the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines study of U.S. roof and rib (roof- rib) accident statistics and related accident costs is to define current accident trends (1980-84) associated with fatal and nonfatal roof-rib fall accidents. Data were retrieved from a data base containing all recorded U.S. mining accidents, then sorted and normalized utilizing a computer software program. The statistics indicate that roof-rib accidents have significantly declined in the 5-yr study period. Moreover, they indicate that there have been increases and/or patterns of roof-rib accidents associated with specific mine characteristics, such as seam height, mine size, geographic location, and seasonal variations. Also, roof-rib injury characteristics produced pattern changes involving worker activity, lost workdays, types of injury, and severity of injury. A conservative estimate indicates that there has been a 30% adjusted increase in the cost of a roof-rib accident over the 5-yr study period.

[This report describes preliminary tests of samples from six deposits of oxidized copper ores .in Nevada. The tests for the most part were confined to laboratory-scale acid leaching to extract the copper.'The exceptions consisted of flotation tests to demons' ate the possibilities of treating the ore by that method. The samples tested were representative of oxidized copper ores from six counties in all parts of Nevada. The results obtained by the preliminary tests described were indicative of the extractions of copper to be expected, In the five leaching experiments, the approximate consumption of acid was also indicated.]

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington.The investigation consisted of transit and topcgraphic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and. analysed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing now sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

The U. S. Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 placed limits on the permissible concentration of airborne respirable coal mine dust. Evidence exists which suggests that the effects on health of respirable coal mine dust may depend on both host factors and dust properties other than concentration. Dust particle size, shape, density, specific surface area and chemical composition are among the dust parameters of interest in an epidemiological investigation of coal workers' pneumoconiosis and coal miner exposure to mine dust. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of techniques to determine selected properties of respirable coal mine dust. An approved underground horizontal elutriator which samples air at 36 cfm was designed, fabricated and utilized in this study to collect respirable coal mine dust in three mines representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coal seams. Analytical procedures for measurement of respirable dust sample particle size, density, random projected area, total surface area and chemical composition are presented. Results of analyses of three samples collected in each mine are presented. Up to five full work shifts of sampling were required to accumulate approximately five grams of respirable coal mine dust in each sample. Statistical tests were applied to determine the significance of differences between properties of dust samples collected in the same mine and between arithmetic mean values of dust properties representing three samples collected in each mine. The Bureau of Mines used several laboratory batch flotation schemes combined with magnetic separation to investigate the feasibility of recovering potash feldspar and glass sands from molybdenite tailings. Four molybdenite tailings or prospective tailings were used as test samples. Feldspar concentrates containing from 10.7 pct to 12.0 pct K2O were recovered from three of the four samples. The alkali content of the fourth sample met the grade for a mixed feldspar. All the feldspar concentrates contained iron in excess of the 0.10-pct-Fe203 specification for most uses. Electron-beam microprobe examination of the feldspar concentrates showed the presence of an iron-bearing potash feldspar in quantities that were excessive with respect to most iron specifications. However, a high-quality glass sand was produced from all of the samples.

The Bureau of Mines estimated reclamation costs for 13 surface coal mines in nine States west of the Missisisppi River. With the exception of the Pacific Coast coal province, at least one mine in each of the western coal provinces was studied. Cost estimates were, made using standard estimating procedures from data obtained from company records, interviews with industry personnel, and onsite observations. Estimated costs are presented in four categories which represent the four phases of mined-land reclamation: (1) Design, engineering, and overhead; (2) bond and permit fees; (3) backfilling and grading; and (4) revegetation. Estimated costs as of the first quarter of 1976 are expressed as averages and ranges in terms of per acre, per ton of coal produced, and per million Btu. Total reclamation costs ranged from $860 to $7,200 per acre, from 6 to 84 cents per ton, and from 4 to 35.3 mills per million Btu. A mine in the Northern Great Plains coal province (Region D) showed the highest per acre cost whereas mines in part of the western region of the Interior coal province (Region A) experienced the greatest per ton and per million Btu cost. The high cost of reclamation in the Western United States is reflected in the backfill in and grading category, particularly in the cost of topsoil removal and subsequent replacement as required by individual State reclamation regulations.

This report presents the results of a demonstration of the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of hydraulic borehole mining of shallow oil sands. Borehole mining offers a method for extracting the oil sands with minimal disturbance to environmental quality because (1) no overburden is removed, (2) no waste rock piles are required, (3) the tailings can be backfilled into the borehole cavity, (4) the ground water quality should be undisturbed, (5) a closed-loop water system can be employed so that no surface streams are polluted, and (6) surface subsidence can be minimized by backfilling the mined cavities. This project consisted of two concurrent tasks: mining operations and environmental monitoring. To generate the environmental impact, nearly 1000 tons of oil sands were mined from two boreholes. Water quality and ground subsidence were monitored. No significant changes occurred in the chemical composition of the process water, indicating that the borehole mining process does not dissolve the mined material. The average subsidence in the immediate vicinity of the boreholes was about 1/2 inch, although some points were noted to be slightly elevated. In general, the amount of subsidence increased with time and decreased with distance from the bore-hole. A mining cost analysis was used to project an estimated cost for production mining of about $38 per barrel of oil.

For nearly a score of years the American petroleum industry has faced the problem of maintaining its economic structure while oil -producing potentialities greatly exceeded the increasing market demand for oil and its products . However , the combination of maximum civilian demand with rising defense requirements caused an all - time peak in crudeoil production in the latter half of 1941 , with a daily production (as estimated by the Bureau of Mines ) of 4,139,000 barrels in December - an increase of 16 percent over the daily production of 3,573,000 barrels in December 1940. In the event of a long war , a continuing , steady, and adequate supply of petroleum and its products for military and required civilian needs is essential, and the efficiency of recovery of oil from natural underground reservoirs will have to be maximum. Whereas it may not be possible to increase production in some fields , the output from others may have to be drawn at a much faster rate than formerly . More than 10 years ' experience in operating oil fields under proration control has demonstrated to petroleum engineers that some of the efficiency of recovery of oil from reservoir sands and rocks is sacrificed if the oil and gas are withdrawn at too . rapid a rate . As petroleum is an irreplaceable natural resource for which suitable substitutes probably will not be available in desired quantities for many years , any producing method that jeopardizes the quantity of oil that may be recovered from underground reservoirs must be considered at this time of declared war against aggressor nations as conflicting with the best interests of national defense . At best, the efficient recovery of oil is a complex problem . It involves not only a knowledge and application of the fundamentals of fluid flow through porous mediums, but the sources of energy responsible for the movement of oil and gas through reservoir sands and porous rocks to wells must be known to determine the best practices for extracting these hydrocarbons . Reservoir energy is of two kinds - (1 ) water under hydrostatic head underlying the oil in the extraneous parts of the reservoir system and ( 2 ) natural gas under pressure as "free " gas in the reservoir or in solution in the oil . Inasmuch as the efficiency of oil recovery depends largely on the manner in which reservoir energy is used to move oil through reservoir sands and porous rocks to wells , optimum practices for withdrawing the oil cannot be determined until it has been established that the oil in the reservoirs is being forced to wells by an internal gas expansion, by a natural water drive , or by a combination of gas expansion and water drive . There is a fundamental difference in the performance characteristics of gas - expansion and water - drive reservoirs . In a strictly gas - expansion reservoir the energy available to move oil and gas through the porous formations to wells results solely from gas pressure , which is maximum when the reservoir is tapped by the first well . Pressures decline as oil and gas are withdrawn ; consequently, the energy available for moving oil and gas through the oil - bearing formations to wells decreases with production . Curtailing the oil - production rate or shutting in gas - expansion reservoirs entirely will not act to replenish energy previously used in the production of oil and gas ; in their operation , therefore , it is especially important not to waste reservoir energy - the production of oil with high gas : oil ratios will be reflected in lower ultimate recoveries of oil .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of the use of three unique numerical modeling methods to analyze cutter roof problems in underground coal mines. Cutter roof failures are common in coal mines where the immediate roof is comprised of thin laminae exposed to highly biaxial tectonic stress fields. The predominant mechanism for failure is assumed to be excessive shear stress at the entry corners exceeding the shear strength of the rock. Early work in this area utilized the finite-element method and then the boundary-element method to analyze several cutter roof control measures. Various stress control measures were simulated to estimate their respective effects on reducing the high levels of shear stress at the entry corners. More recent studies made use of the discrete-element method. This method was used to take the analyses beyond the elastic continuum limits to simulate the propagation of a shear fracture and subsequent redistribution of stress within the mine roof. A simple roof bolt model was implemented to show the benefits of bolting to increase the resistance to shearing and separation along horizontal bedding planes and maintain roof stability.

"Based on contact-angle measurements and the work of adhesion equation, the hydrophobicity of a wide variety of coals was found to decrease with decreasing rank, fixed carbon and total carbon content and with increasing oxygen and hydroxyl content. The estimated hydrophobicity, based on the water-sessile-drop contact angle, is '\.. 20% for lignite, increases with increasing rank up to a maximum of 'V70% for low (LV) and medium (MV) volatile bituminous coals and then decreases somewhat for anthracite. Using the captive-bubble technique, the calculated hydrophobicity ranges from '\.. 0% (below HV A bituminous rank) to a maximum of 55% for L V-MV coal. The former estimation is believed to be the more accurate. While the water-sessile-drop contact angle as measured on a polished-coal surface is usually larger than that shown by the captive-bubble method, the two values were found to converge at""' 95% relative humidity. It is proposed that the surface of coal consists of three kinds of sites: strongly hydrophobic, weakly hydrophobic and hydrophilic. The sessile-drop technique measures the total hydrophobic sites whereas the captive-bubble method measures only the more strongly hydrophobic sites. A water film covers the weakly hydrophobic sites preventing their detection by the captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a mixture of the degradation products of plants and of mineral matter. The appearance and properties of a specific coal is determined by the nature of the original vegetation and the extent of the physical and chemical changes which have occurred after deposition. The coalification process may be considered to have started with peat formation followed by a transition to lignite due to burial under sediments and metamorphic processes. Further metamorphic transformation to bituminous coals and, finally, under intense metamorphic action, to anthracite causes the carbon content and rank of the coal to increase. With such a wide variation in their genesis and composition, equally wide variations in the degree of hydrophobicity of different coals may be expected. It is the purpose of this paper to provide a means of estimating the hydrophobicity of a given coal sample based on rank parameters."

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined ilmenite-bearing sands in southern Texas as part of a program to discover sources of supply for the domestic titanium industry. Deposits were examined from May 1956 through January 1959 in the outcrops of sandstone beds in the Jackson group of Eocene formations in Lee, Burleson, Fayette, and Starr Counties on the Gulf Coastal Plain; in alluvial valley fill in Brewster County in southwest Texas; in the sand beaches of Matagorda Peninsula and the Galveston, Padre, and Brazos Islands--part of the offshore chain of barrier islands along the Texas coast; and in unconsolidated sediments in Willacy County on the Rio Grande delta in the southeast Texas.

Growing domestic and global demands for mineral resources have established an imperative need for developing comprehensive, versatile mineral supply analysis evaluation tools. The Minerals Availability System (MAS) of the Bureau of Mines is meeting this need with its computerized Supply Analysis Model (SAM). This paper describes the SAM system and the quantitative methods used by the MAS for mineral supply analyses. The MAS evaluating process consists of deposit identification, tonnage and grade determinations, engineering and cost evaluations, financial analyses, and supply curve generation. MAS has developed this computerized system primarily to facilitate the maintenance of data information for the constructing of commodity supply curves. The SAM system presently has the analytical capabilities of simultaneously (I) evaluating many mineral deposits, (2) updating mineral supply information to reflect inflationary changes in costs and prices, and (3) conducting sensitivity analysis to determine impacts on mineral supply under various conditions. Many potential users in both government and industry will find the SAM system a valuable tool for policy analysis, forecasting, and planning. The SAM system has been constructed so that any types of information that are similar to the data elements in the MAS data base may be used to perform supply studies. The storage space needed for the SAM system?s programs, files, and output data is approximately 14 million characters.
