The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. This paper, which describes the milling practice of the Verde Central Mines, Inc., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Verde Central concentrator is located in Walnut Gulch, about 1 mile west of Jerome, Ariz., and on the Jerome-Prescott highway. It is about 1,000 feet distant from the main shaft of the Verde Central mine and treats ore from this mine only. The mill is connected with the main shaft of the mine by a 24-inch gave railway, over which the ore is hauled in 5-cubic yard capacity, rocker, side-dump cars, by a 3-ton Brookville gasoline locomotive.

Four samples of manganese-bearing material from the Aroostook County, Maine, deposits were tested at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., to determine their amenability to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods. The samples represented material from the Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit, the Dudley farm, and the Burnham farm and contained 11 to 14 percent manganese. None of the tests produced appreciably enriched concentrates suitable for further treatment for the production of ferromanganese. The intimate association of the manganese minerals with iron and siliceous minerals requires extremely fine grinding to liberate the manganese minerals in these ores and prevents efficient concentration by physical means.

Magnesite is of importance primarily as a refractory material for lining steel furnaces , although substantial amounts are used in the production of flooring compositions and other building materials and for certain chemicals , notably epsom salts . Since consumption for all of these purposes is largely in the eastern United States and domestic deposits are situated in California and Washington , this country's magnesite mining industry , which was created largely by war- time conditions , has subsequently been sustained by tariff protection .

Explosion hazards that may exist when air becomes polluted with combustible gases and vapors are extremely dangerous, particularly if the volume of gaseous atmosphere is large, and an explosion under such circumstances could do tremendous damage to persons and property. The hazard is even greater if explosive mixtures are confined under high pressure, as the pressure could increase to tremendous proportions just before the container would rupture. Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the flammability (explosibility) of various types of combustible atmospheres and published its findings. The explosibility of natural gas has been studied, and the limits of flammability have been determined and published. Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

"IntroductionThis paper on the kata thermometer is issued by the Bureau of Mines on account of the general interest in this instrument and the fact that it is frequently used in studies of mine ventilation conditions with regard to comfort and health of miners. It has been used in the studies being conducted along this line by the Bureau of Mines on the effects of high temperatures and humidities of air in mine working on the comfort conditions, as well as in studies of atmospheric conditions in mine, railway and vehicular tunnels.The study of the various physiological responses of the human body to different degrees of temperature combined with different percentages of relative humility in still and in moving air, now being conducted at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in the research laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, cooperating with the Bureau of and the U. S. Public Health Service, presents an added opportunity of investigating the instruments that have been devised to measure atmospheric conditions as they affect the comfort and health of human beings.The ordinary mercury thermometer, as pointed out by Heberden3 almost hundred years ago is a very inadequate instrument for measuring the physiological effects of atmospheric conditions. It merely accounts for that part of the body heat lost by raliation and convection, while as a matter of fact greater part of the body heat resulting from the metabolic process within the body is eliminated by means of evaporation from the surface of the body."

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites. The objective of this study was to compare two mines, each affected by this pillar load transfer mechanism, and to show how this interaction affected underground workings by the installing and monitoring underground instrumentation. At mine site A where the overburden was 1,000 ft, the innerburden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft), overlays of the mine layout show pillars were not superpositioned, excessive roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only. At mine site B, the overburden was approximately 555 ft, the innerburden thickness was approximately 105 ft, overlays of the mine layout show pillars were superpositioned, minimal roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated a skin loading only.

During the investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines received a 100-pound sample of manganese ore from the Doyle-Smith property, Yuma County, Ariz. Laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of this ore to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration to produce a marketable-grade product. The Doyle-Smith claims are in northern Yuma County, within 15 miles of the Artillery Peak deposit. The lot of ore used in the test work was taken from the outcrop of a large, massive, irregular bed of oxide manganese ore found on the claims.

"The first study of this subject has been made in Illinois, but as opportunity affords, similar studies will be made in other States. "The limestone deposit utilized by one of the plants of the Universal Atlas Cement Co. is covered in part by a stratum of cherty limestone. If this overlying deposit could be utilized by removing the excess of chert economically, quarry costs could be reduced and the amount of rock economically available would be increased greatly. On account of the distribution of flint and limestone, a product fairly free of flint can be obtained until the quarry face is about 50 or 55 feet high. As the face is worked farther back into the hill, the comparatively clean stone is overlain with a constantly increasing amount of high-flint limestone. If this flint remained with the limestone, there would be a prohititively high silica ratio in the finished cement; if the flinty layer were removed as overburden a very large tonnage would be handled and much good stone lost. Consequently it was felt that means should be devised for separating the flint from the limestone after it reaches the plant.The investigation was undertaken by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Universal Atlas Cement Co. and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.CONSIDERATION OF PROCESSESMany schemes for the separation of Minerals are based on differences in the specific gravities of the minerals to be separated. In this case the flint has a specific gravity of approximately 2.62 while the limestone averages about 2.70. This differential is not large enough to permit separation by any method based on specific gravity. Furthermore, all the limestone particles in any given sample are not alike; usually about 10 percent of them have a specific gravity the same as, or lower than, the flint."

"The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Gas Association investigating the relation of properties of gas oils to the gum-forming properties of carbureted water gas. The present report deals with the effects of operating practice on the composition of the light oils from carbureted water gas. A general outline of the gummy meter problem has been presented in a previous paper.*Carbureted water gas is a mixture roughly of 80 per cent water gas by volume and 20 per cent oil gas. The latter, though small in relative volume, supplies more than half of the heating value of the gas under the present-day standard. Therefore, it is logical that the oil used in the carbureting process and the operating practices involved should be subjected to scientific study. Many investigations***** bearing on the aspects considered in this paper have been carried out in the past."

Use of nuclear reactors to furnish high-temperature heat is a field that has not received as much attention as propulsion and electric power production. Investigations are being conducted under a joint Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)--Bureau of Mines research program to determine the feasibility of using nuclear heat for chemical processing. A part of this process-heat-reactor program is the study of a system in [hich] helium transfers heat from 8 nuclear reactor to a chemical processing [essel]. This requires construction of (1) a nuclear reactor to operate with helium exit temperature of 2,500° F. and with pressures in the range of 250 to 500 p.s.i.g. and (2) a processing vessel (heat exchanger) to convert the enthalpy of the helium into chemical process reaction heat. Neither component exists at present, and development of each promises to be a formidable task. To aid in the study of such a system, the Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed a vessel heated by electrical induction to simulate a source of nuclear fission heat. This vessel is undergoing preliminary testing. Gasification of coal and reforming of hydrocarbons are promising uses for nuclear heat. It appears that a higher price per unit of nuclear heat can be tolerated for chemical processing than that allowable for power generation.

This publication reports on the design, fabrication and test of an Improved methane monitor system for compliance to 30CFR75.313. The system will Initiate automatic shutdown of mining machinery when excessive concentrations of methane are encountered. The prime consideration: In the design were small size, Improved accuracy and reliability, fast response and a transient resistant power supply capable of reliable operation from any mine power source. The power supply contains an internal battery that provides operating power to the detection system prior to mining machine start-up or after machine shutdown. This report documents the development program from conception through in-mine testing.

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a program to increase the utilization of chromium by providing samples to individuals and institutions requesting chromium for research investigations. This report consists of a tabulation of the disposition of chromium samples distributed from July 1953 through June 1961; 109 requests for chromium were answered by providing chromium as electrolytic plate, powder, or wrought forms. The demand for samples reached a peak in fiscal year 1959 and declined to a relatively low level in fiscal year 1961. The largest number of requests came from individuals engaged in mechanical property studies; there were also many requests from those concerned with vaporized metal and physical properties studies. Most noteworthy application for chromium was the experimental use of the radioactive form, Cr61 in radiotherapy of cancer.
