"Belt and shaker conveyors, used singly or as combined units, have for many years been an integral part of many coal-mine haulage systems. The belt conveyor has also been used extensively as a main haulage unit in open-pit iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district, particularly on the Mesabi Range. Few underground metal mines, however, either in the ferrous or non-ferrous branches of the mining industry, use the conveyors exclusively or even extensively for underground haulage. At present, only five iron-ore mines in the entire Lake Superior district have belt- or shaker-conveyor installations of any significant size. Of these mines, three are in the Crystal Falls-Iron River district of Michigan on the Menominee Range, one is on the Marquette Range near Ishpeming, Mich., and one is on the Mesabi Range near Keewatin, Minn.Results of the studies of tackless haulage in the Lake Superior district will not permit the establishment of any formula to prove or disprove the advantages of belt or shaker systems at all underground mines. The studies do show that trackless haulage can be used to advantage where the proper conditions exist. Advantages are particularly apparent when development can be planned sufficiently in advance of exploitation to permit installation of belts or shakers as part of the development program and where the systems are extended to include haulage in stopes as well as main entries.During the winter of 1947-48, the Bureau undertook a study of all of the underground ore conveying systems known to be in operation in the Lake Superior district for the purpose of making available to the entire mining industry the technologic data developed in the area. Because conditions that led to the installation of the belt and shaker conveying systems were often a function of the character of the deposit or the method of mining, a brief description of those conditions is included in this report.After a preliminary investigation into the extent to which trackless conveyors were employed in the district, it was found that a detailed study at five bites would result in fair appraisal of that method of haulage in the underground iron-ore mines.Each of the five significant installations is described separately in this report. In one instance, however, company policy does not permit identification of the mine wherein the conveying is done. In that instance the operation is designated as mine ""A"".Unless otherwise specified, all tonnage figures quoted herein are gross.The cooperation of officials of all of the companies operating underground mines in the Lake Superior district permitted successful completion of preliminary studies of mining practices and conveying systems.Special acknowledgment is made to R. Before the present century there existed a fairly persistent demand for the establishment of a Federal Department of Mines, but relatively little was done about it until a considerable number of very serious coal-mine disasters in 1906, 1907, 1908, and 1909 created what might almost be termed a national scandal and virtually forces the Federal. Government to take action to try to solve the problem of the cruse and prevention of such disastrous occurrences. Instead of a Department of Mines, the mining people had to accept a bureau, which was created on July l, 1910; and while the Bureau of Mines was given numerous functions, unquestionably the promotion of safety in the mineral industries was and continues to be one of its main "jobs." The Bureau's organic act was approved in 1910 and amended in 1913. Both the original and amended acts indicated that promoting; the health and safety of the mine workers constituted the chief function of the Bureau, and that this was the construction placed on its activities by those put in charge in 1910 is shown very definitely by the fact that as soon as the Bureau came into existence on July 1, 1910, both health end safety activities were started in its Mine Accidents Division. Before the end of the first fiscal year (June 30, 1911) 6 mine safety stations had been established in various parts of the United States, add 6 nine safety cars had been put into the field; by October 1910 first-aid-training work was being done in mining regions. The Bureau eras able to function so promptly in its safety work largely because sections of the Geological Survey, which had been doing some coal-mine safety work since 1907 or 1905, were transferred into the Bureau when it began to operate in July 1910. On October 30, 1911, a national First-Aid Meet was held at Pittsburgh, Pa., at which first aid and mine rescue were demonstrated. During the fiscal year 1910-11, the first year of the Bureau's existence, 509 persons were given certificates indicating completion of the Bureau's training course in first aid.

The occurrence of dust in mines has always been a source of trouble, but for any years, and virtually up to the beginning of the present century, relatively little of a definite nature was known as to the numerous ill effects of dust in mining operations. Even today, with the west amount of time given and attention paid (for at least 40 years in various, countries) to research and observation en dust in mining, and in spite of the experience with it, much information remains to be obtained, before definite, well-authenticated statements can be made as to numerous features connected with the occurrence of dust in Dines an of its effect upon the health and safety of the worker. One statement that can be made with relatively good assurance of being uncontradicted in that dust is a real menace to the well-being of mine workers, and this includes both health and safety. In addition, dust in and around mines and mining plants is one cause of large financial losses to mine owners and operators. FORMATION OF DUST IN COAL MINES IN THE UNITED STATES One definition of mining is "the processes by which useful materials are obtained from the earth's crust; " since virtually all of the useful materials of or in the earth's crust either are solids or must be reached by penetrating through solids, the materials that are moved in mining must necessarily be broken or disrupted, so that almost every phase of the work of loosening the material and transporting it is likely to produce dust.

[This paper is one of series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes the mine of the Hanover Bessemer Iron & Copper Co. at Fierro, Grant County, N. M., which is the only operating iron mine in the southwestern part of the United States. This mine is in a district noted for the great variety of ores that it produces. Within a small area, as shown is Figure 1, there are noteworthy deposits of nearly all the common metals. The ore occurs in lenticular masses dipping at about 50°. An underhand stoping method has been developed that requires but a very small amount of handling of ore. As the ore is very irregular in iron content and also in the distribution of the impurities--chiefly sulphur, silica, and magnesia--a method has to be used that will permit selective mining and will also allow ore and waste to be taken out separately as conditions change. A magnetic cobbing plant raises the grade of the ore shipped about 10 per cent.]

Preliminary results of an in situ oil shale retorting experiment conducted by the Bureau of Mines in a shallow bed of Green River oil shale at Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, Wyo., are described. Eleven wells were drilled into a 20-ft-thick section of the shale lying between 68 and 88 It deep, and attempts were made to connect the wells through the shale with a fracture system created by application of high-voltage electricity (electro-linking), hydraulic fracturing, and explosive fracturing. Ignition of the shale through the central well was easily achieved with a propane burner, and shale oil began to collect in three wells within 3 hours. Propane injection was discontinued after 7 days, and combustion continues, although attempts to control the direction of the combustion front have been unsuccessful. Production rates as high as 4 ½ barrels of nil per day have been recorded, but too little is known about underground conditions to permit an estimate of recovery efficiency at this time.

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was done through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will be useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetime. The Bureau of Mines is engaged in research on ground probing radars for detection of geologic hazards in advance of mining. Penetration distances and interpretation models depend on the dielectric properties and wave propagation characteristics for coal measure stratified media. Relative dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured under ambient conditions for Pittsburgh Seam coal measure rock over the frequency range of 20 to 100 MHz by the susceptance-variation method. The rock types measured were representative sedimentary rock located above the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Extreme values for the computed attenu-ation distance ranged from 1.7 m at 100 MHz for siltstone to 230 m at 20 MHz for a particular limestone.

A recent survey of pumping plants in the anthracite region of Pennsyl¬vania showed that more than 90 percent of the pumps in use are the horizontal centrifugal types (1).2/ This report on the design and operation of centrifugal pumps should be helpful to engineers of the region who must select pumps that are best suited to particular pumping conditions in anthracite mines. Before a centrifugal mine pumping plant is designed, the special features of the pumps that may be used should be considered, especially when low repair costs and continuous operation during flood periods are prerequisites, and when acid mine water is to be pumped. Two important advantages of a centrifugal pump are that the flow is continuous and that it can be throttled without developing excessive pressure or overloading its driving unit.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of rare-earth oxides (EtEO), including yttrium, and thorium, which is also contained in the rare-earth bearing minerals monazite and bastnasite, from 38 'properties in market economy countries (MEC's). Only nine of the properties evaluated produce or would produce REO as the primary product; the others contain REO as a byproduct, chiefly from mineral sands operations recovering rutile, ilmenite, and zircon. Nearly 77% (2,578,000 mt) of the total 3,355,000 mt of recoverable RE0 evaluated is from producing properties. It is estimated that 21% (705,000 mt) of this total is from properties that could not realize a positive rate of return at the January 1984 market prices for the recovered commodities. At production capacities assumed for this evaluation, the amount of RE0 potentially available from producers ranges from an estimated 46,500 mt in 1986, to a peak of 50,900 mt in 1992, to 49,900 mt by the year 2000. Total MEG production in 1984 was estimated at 40,700 mt. Assuming demand does not increase sharply, producing properties can continue to fulfill overall REO demand through at least the end of this century.

"In at least three out of every four working faces in metal mines there is no attempt made to cause air circulation other than by use of compressed air, and in at least nine cases out of ten the compressed air is released merely by opening, or partly opening, the valve and allowing the compressed air to escape through open air hose used to convey the compressed air to the drilling machines. Usually no blowers are in use during periods of drilling, as the exhaust from the drill provides cool, comparatively fresh air for the driller; however, in some instances, the compressed-air line is provided with a tea connection, which permits taking air for the drill from one side of the tee, and air for ventilation through a separate hose used as a blower, simultaneously with drilling.Table 1 contains temperature and humidity data as to compressed-air blowers from open end of air hose at 36 working places in eleven metal mines of four States, embracing the mining of gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc ores, and at horizons ranging from 500 feet below the surface to as low as 4900 feet.It is noticed that the ordinary air surrounding the worker at the face gives an average wet bulb temperature of 81.7° F. for the 36 working faces, with 84.7° F. dry bulb and 87.2 per cent relative humidity. The average wet bulb tem¬perature of 36 readings at these working faces of compressed air at the end of the,hose as the air issues from the hose was 67.4° F., or 14.3 degrees lower than the average wet bulb readings of the air of the working places; however, the average dry bulb temperature of the 36 readings of compressed air as it issued from the end of the hose was 79.7° F., or only 5 degrees less than that of the general air (84.7°); the relative humidity was 51.1 per cent as against 87.2 per cent for the surrounding air. Readings were taken in five raises, seven crosscuts, ten drifts and 14 stopes.It will be noted that the velocity or movement of the general atmosphere at each of the entire 36 working faces, was found to be practically imperceptible; this might readily be inferred since compressed air is rarely used on blowers if there is adequate circulation of the general air of the place. Where rook temperatures could be obtained readily, they are shown; it is noticeable that the dry bulb temperature of the air of the working place varies little from the rock temperature, and that the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issues from end of air hose varies only a few degrees from the temperature of the surrounding rock; in some instances the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issued from the end of the air hose was higher than the rock temperature or the dry bulb temperature of the surrounding air."

Haulage accidents in the anthracite region cause fewer fatal and lost-time accidents per million man-hours than similar accidents in bituminous mines, a fact that may be accounted for in several ways, but primarily because haulage, in a large part of the region, is restricted to haulage crews operating only on the gangways where most of the miners seldom come in contact with movement or handling of cars and locomotives. Generally in underground mines the number of men injured compared with the number killed is greater for haulage than for roof-fall accidents, while the number of men killed by haulage is second only to the number killed by roof falls.

The Federal Bureau of Mines designed, constructed, and operated a demonstration plant at Louisiana, Mo., to produce gasoline, liquid fuels, and organic compounds from coal by a modified Fischer-Tropsch gas-synthesis process. Satisfactory equipment was developed to produce and purify synthesis gas and convert it into the desired products. Coal or coke was gasified with oxygen and steam to make a gas consisting essentially of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. Dust in the raw gas was removed by cyclone separation, water scrubbing, and electrostatic precipitation. Carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and organic sulfur were removed with diethanolamine, iron oxide, and activated carbon. The gas was passed over iron catalyst and was converted into synthetic liquids, which were then separated and fractionated into gasoline, diesel oil, other liquid fuels, and oxygenated organic compounds. A 39-day continuous run demonstrated the feasibility of the process. Addition of 3 milliliters of tetraethylead per gallon of upgraded (or finished) gasoline gave a product with an octane rating up to 90 by the research method. After a caustic wash, the diesel oil was of a superior quality; its cetane number was 60 or above.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied the locations and general features of 90 pegmatites found in north-central New Mexico. The dominant valuable product of the pegmatites is muscovite, both sheet and scrap. However, the Harding pegmatite in Taos County is mined only for beryl. Many attempts have been made to recover scrap mica on a large scale by mechanical beneficiation of pegmatite, but the operations heretofore have been short-lived. The Globe mine and the Apache mine, both near Petaca in Rio Arriba County, have been the most important sources of sheet mica in New Mexico. Recognition of the growing need for some of the minerals derived from pegmatites led the Bureau of Mines to investigate the occurrences of pegmatite.

An oil well penetrating the Pittsburgh bituminous coalbed in northern West Virginia was plugged and safely mined through 3 months later. A sensitive chemical tracer, introduced into the oil reservoir before the test, was not detected in the mine air following the plugging and during mining of the pillar and penetration of the well. Effectiveness of the plugging in preventing reservoir gas from entering the mine through the well hole was verified by continuous monitoring of the mine air for indications of sulfur hexafluoride, an inert gas detectable in amounts as minute as 1/2 part per billion. Expandable cement and fly ash-gel-water slurry were utilized to seal the well above and below the coal seam. Three other wells were also plugged using various techniques.

The polynomial method for estimating virial coefficients from experimental data suffers from three serious defects: (1) There is no known relationship between the polynomial coefficients and the virial coefficients, (2) the values of the estimates depend upon the degree of the polynomial and the particular set of values used for the independent variable, as well as the random errors in the dependent variable, and (3) the variances calculated for the estimates do not represent the mean square errors of estimation. Attempts to overcome these defects have thus far been unsuccessful; these attempts have also failed to account for the fact that none of the virial coefficients are uniquely determined by the values of the dependent variable for a finite set of values of the independent variable. The conclusion is that virial coefficients cannot be reliably estimated from experimental data unless additional information about the virial expansion itself, such as its rate of convergence, is available.

The low production rates associated with the underground metal mining industry have received considerable attention during the last decade. A number of significant technological advancements, in the form of new equipment, have taken place to improve the economics of ore production. Unfortunately, an extremely important factor in the equation -- the operator protection and safety -- continues to receive a low priority. The underground metal mining industry has one of the poorest industrial safety records in the United States. Equipment operators are constantly being placed in hazardous situations. Even one fatality is one too many. All of us bear the responsibility to eliminate it. This project is one of the important steps currently being undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to improve the operational safety of seven major pieces of ore handling equipment commonly used in underground metal and non-metal mines. The objectives of this study are; (a) to identify the existing hazards associated with the operation of the specific equipment, and (b) to recommend practical solutions that will minimize these hazards and reduce operator injuries. These recommendations are to be in the areas of equipment design improvements, additional operator protection and warning devices, equipment operating procedures and any modifications to the existing safety regulations.

As potash is more necessary to the agricultural economy of the United States now than ever before it is gratifying to find that the virtual stoppage of imports from Germany in late 1939 caused none of the anxious foreboding that gripped American farmers in 1914. For long decades this country, in common with tie rest of the world, depended upon German potash, but today our expanded needs can be mot from domestic sources. The present armed conflict in Europe, like that of 1914, disrupted a world monopoly, but the cartel that in recent years controlled 90 percent of the world output (see fig, 1) was an international syndicate comprising French, Polish, and Spanish as well as German producers and having reported sales agreements covering production in the U. S. S. R. and Palestine. The break-up of these commercial agreements has necessitated readjustments but generates no such alarm as the closing of a single source of supply. In striking contrast to the critical shortage that developed a quarter century ago, no increase in prices has occurred or is anticipated in the domestic market.
