This report covers operations at the Crystal-Victory and Minerva No. 1 mines in Hardin County, Ill., which are operated by the Minerva Oil Co., Fluorspar Division, with offices in Eldorado. It describes the exploration, development, and mining practices, giving costs of each. Transportation, equipment, power, labor, and other influencing factors also are discussed. The mining methods employed are those most applicable to the flat-bedded replacement deposits common to the Cave-in-Rock section of the Southern Illinois fluorspar district. The fluorspar beds occur from surface exposures to 1,000 feet deep. In this district churn drilling is the method practiced for exploring flat-bedded deposits from the surface. Aerial photography and geochemical methods for indicating mineralization have been helpful in planning a drilling program. A program usually includes enough drilling to obtain only sufficient data on the value of the ore body and its structure to justify initial development and purchase of the mineral rights under option.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past-several years the flow of natural bas through high--pressure pipe lines.4 This report deals with that part of the study involving the design of pipe-line, systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are deferred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is, connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. "The tests described in this paper were conducted under the sponsorship of Subcommittee VII on Pulverizing Characteristics of Coal, a subcommittee of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, with a view to evaluating various laboratory procedures for testing grindability of coal in connection with commercial pulverization of coal for use as powdered fuel. The subcommittee, at a meeting in New York City on February 21, 1934, selected for test four methods that had been developed during the past few years for testing grindabilitay of coal and were being used by coal-testing laboratories in the United States and Canada. These methods are:Bureau of Mines method, Cross method, Fuel Research Laboratory method, and Hardgrove method. Subcommittee VII agreed that the grindability tests should be made on five coals selected to cover a wide range of hardness. The Pittsburgh Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, was asked to direct the investigation and to prepare representative samples of the coals. Laboratories of the fol. lowing institutions and companies agreed to cooperate by making grindability tests: Babcock & Wilcox Co., Foster Wheeler Corporation, Fuel Engineering Co., of New York, Fuel Research Laboratory of the Canada Department of Mines, and Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSHelpful suggestions in planning the investigation were made by A. "Asbestos" is not the name of a distinct mineral species but is rather a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals. The origin and significance of names applied to asbestos by early writers are discussed in the section devoted to sources of supply and terms employed in ancient times. VARIETIES The most useful variety of asbestos is chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine the composition of which is expressed by the formula H4Mg3Si209. Chrysotile is characterized by a strength and flexibility that permit the use of the longer fibers for spinning. The bulk of the world production of both long and short fibers, is of this variety.

As part of an effort to establish the extent of the domestic chromium supply that could be exploited in case of adverse changes in international chromium production and trading patterns, a two-part study was conducted for the Bureau of Mines, to assess the domestic availability of critical metals in scrap containing significant amounts of chromium. This report describes the part of the study that deals with wrought stainless steels and heat-resisting alloys. Data were collected on types of scrap, sources, quantities, and ultimate disposition, leading to the conclusion that In 1917 about 62,000 tons of contained chromium was unrecycled. Unrecovered obsolete stainless steel scrap accounts for most of these uncollected chromium values. Error margins in the amount of uncollected scrap are estimated to be 10 to 20 percent.

The electron optics, vacuum system, and sample stage assembly for the Bureau of Mines? electron probe X-ray spectrograph were purchased. Four scanning curved-crystal spectrometers, two reflection- and two transmission-type, were designed and constructed by the authors. The reflection spectrometers are placed in a vacuum chamber for measurement of long-wave-length X-radiation. Detection, pulse-amplitude discrimination, and recording circuits are provided for the simultaneous measurement of four X-ray spectral lines. Minimum spot size is approximately 2 microns in diameter at 30 kilovolts and a sample-to-ground current of 5 x 10-8 ampere. At this voltage and current the limit of detection with reflection spectrometers is less than 0.05 weight-percent for most elements. The limit of detection for elements determined by transmission-type spectrometers, evaluated at 35 kilovolts and 5 x 10-8 ampere, is approximately 0.1 weight--percent for all elements having excitation voltages below 20 kilovolts. In general, reflection spectrometers exhibited satisfactory but poorer resolution than the transmission type, resolution of the spectrometers being limited primarily by crystal imperfections, with greater mosaic structure being introduced by the grinding process for the reflection crystals. Several applications of the electron probe X-ray spectrograph are described. Analysis of a uranium-steel is discussed in detail to illustrate calculation of composition from measured X-ray intensities.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the effects of two iron-based fuel additives on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of engines used in underground mines. One additive, ferrous picrate, did not measurably affect exhaust emissions. This report is mainly about a ferrocene-based additive that reduced DPM between 4 and 45 pet., depending on engine operating conditions. The report concludes that the DPM reductions were caused by the catalytic oxidation properties of a ferric oxide coating that developed inside the engine's combustion chamber. The ferric oxide coating also decreased gas-phase hydrocarbons and O2, but it increased CO2 and NOx, The increase in NOx, of about 12 pet, is considered the only adverse effect of the ferrocene-based fuel additive. The results suggest that the effectiveness of ferrocene was partially offset by increased sulfates because of the high-sulfur fuel used. Recommendations for continuing fuel additive research are presented.

[In the course of the investigation the Bureau of Mines is carrying on to determine the causes, behavior, and control of mine fires, the detection of incipient heating underground in the mines and above ground in refuse banks has received consideration. A report has been published5/ describing apparatus and tests made on anthracite to determine the amount and composition of the a oxidation products when normal dry air was passed through it at temperatures varrying from 100° to 350° C. These tests showed that the amount of evolved gases and their relative proportions varied with the temperature. From these results, graphs were prepared by which the temperature at which the coal was oxidized could be estimated thus giving a possible means of detecting incipient heating.]

The rapid growth of the organic chemical industry in the United States and abroad has focused attention on the future raw-material sources for this important industry. Chemical products are essential to modern civilization; and millions of tons of organic chemicals are used annually, ranging from basic raw materials to finished chemical products such as drugs, cosmetics, and soaps. Hundreds of chemical products are made directly or indirectly from coal, but in this report "coal chemicals" will be limited to crude tar, crud light oil, and ammonia recovered in the high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal and the important principal products obtained by processing these materials. Specifically these include benzene} toluene, xylene, naphthalene, creosote oil, tar acid oil, pitch, and ammonium sulfate. Therefore the term "coal chemicals", wherever used in this report, includes only these products and does not include the secondary or intermediate products such as styrene, synthetic phenol, aniline, phthalic anhydride, or finished products made from these, such as synthetic rubber, plastics, and dyes. The United States leads the world in production and consumption of coal chemicals. In the past five years nearly one-fourth of the total output of coal-tar crudes in the world was produced in the United States. Consumption of some of the more important products derived from these crudes such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and naphthalene, however, ranged from about one-third to one-half of the world total because of imports and production of benzene, toluene, and xylene from petroleum. The synthetic organic chemical industry of the United States was established during World War I on chemical raw materials obtained by the high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal but this source of supply currently furnishes less than 40 percent. More than 60 percent of the chemical raw materials used to produce organic and inorganic chemical is supplied by the petroleum industry and production of petrochemicals is rising rapidly.

The technical feasibility of gasifying powdered, noncoking, low-rank coal with steam in an externally heated tube has been demonstrated. The tube, 112 ft. of alloy-steel tubing shaped into a helix, served as an electrical conductor of electricity used for heating. The effects of the following variables were studied: Residence time of coal in reactor, average reaction temperature, steam concentration, and rank or geologic age of coal. Reaction pressure was maintained in the range 19-26 p.s.i.a. High carbon conversions and large yields of synthesis gas were obtained with low-rank coal. In one test, for example, about 88 pct. of the carbon in a subbituminous C coal was gasified at 1,910* F. with a residence time of 1 sec. The gas contained 58 pct. H2, 19 COD 15 CO, and 3 CH4; the yield was 30 cu. ft. (at 32' F. and 14.7 p.s.i.) of synthesis gas (CO + H2) per pound of dry coal.

Gnome shaft, situated about 24 miles southeast of Carlsbad, N. Mex., was designed and sunk by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for conducting a peace- time experimental nuclear explosion in the thick salt beds of the Permian Salado formation. Excavation was started July 1, 1960, and completed July 26, 1961. The 10-foot diameter shaft, lined with concrete through the rock section, was sunk 1,216 feet. A drift was driven approximately 1,140 feet on the 1,200- foot level terminating in a shot chamber. On completion of 100 feet of shaft, by means of a truck-mounted crane, facilities were installed for conventional sinking. About 709 feet of rock and 506 feet of salt were encountered in the shaft. Salt beds at this place are reported to be over 1,200 feet thick. The overlying rock section varies greatly in composition and thickness of beds and contains a 28-foot bed of water-bearing dolomite. The aquifer was sealed to facilitate shaft sinking and to prevent water-seepage damage in the salt section of the shaft. Sealing was accomplished by grout injection through holes drilled into the aquifer and by grouting behind the concrete liner.

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. This later program was initiated in July 1942 and was completed in May 1943. 4/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilisation of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circular pros. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted bench-scale investigations leading to the design of an integrated process for producing reactor-grade zir-conium oxide (Zr02) from zircon sand, which avoids the air pollution, water pollution, fire hazard, and odor problems associated with the hexone-thiocyanate process. The integrated process consists of three steps: production of crude zirconyl sulfate solution, solvent extraction, and production of Zr02 from strip liquor. This report describes the solvent extraction step. Multistage, countercurrent liquid-liquid extraction with a tertiary amine in kerosine was used to separate zirconium from a dilute H2S04 solution containing hafnium and other impurities. Process steps de-scribed include extraction from an aqueous feed solution to form a hafnium-contaminated, zirconium-bearing organic-phase solution, scrubbing to separate zirconium from coextracted hafnium, stripping to transfer hafnium-free zirconium into an aqueous strip liquor, chloride-loading to produce a chloride-bearing organic solution, scrubbing with the chloride-loaded organic solution to remove traces of uranium impur-ity from the zirconium-bearing strip liquor, and regeneration to pre-pare the organic solution for reuse. These steps were performed simul-taneously in steady-state, bench-scale experiments. Zirconium recovery of up to 93 pct was achieved. Results of an economic evaluation are included.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an overcore stress measurement on the 5300 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, to investigate the stress regime around an experimental stope in a rock-burst-prone mine. The result indicated a stress field with unexpected magnitude and orientation [s 1 ?135 MPa (19,600 psi) oriented S 80° W). An unusual amount of rock-burst activity was encountered during subsequent excavation. A careful review of the overcore data suggested the overcore strain measurements were valid. Moreover, concentrated rock-burst activity suggested that the measured stress field did exist, but was localized and therefore did not represent the far-field in situ stress field.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the threshold of dispersal of monolayers and piles of rock dust, anthracite, and Pittsburgh seam coal dust in a small wind tunnel that simulated a coal mine gallery, with the objective of preventing or limiting the formation of flammable dust clouds. The effect of selected variables on entrainment velocity was examined. Mode of entrainment and flow processes in the wake region of dust configurations were investigated by means of high-speed motion pictures. Significant results were as follows: 1. Local minimum air velocities required for dispersal were only slightly higher for shallow dust ridges than for dust particles. 2. Minimum velocities for entrainment of dust particles from smooth glass and coal surfaces increased in the order rock dust, anthracite, Pittsburgh seam coal. 3. The mechanism for dispersal of dust poles depended significantly on dust pile geometry, cohesiveness of dust, bulk density and compaction of dust, adhesive surface, and vibrations perturbing the supporting surface.

Costs of disposing of steel slag are estimated based on the present method and a proposed alternate method for a steel mill in the Pittsburgh area. Estimated cost data were calculated by the Bureau of Mines and do not reflect the investment and operating costs and credits of a specific steel mill and processing plant. The alternate method of steel slag disposal would result in an appreciable cost savings to the mill and concurrently supply the industrial and commercial markets with low-cost, high-quality construction materials.

This report describes how a limited number of preliminary exploration drill-hole assays from a mineral deposit can be used to design grid spacing that is both economic and efficient for subsequent evaluation drilling of that deposit. Relationships between desired precision of the estimate of grade of ore and drilling cost are used to determine the economic drill-hole spacing. The statistical concept of precision in estimating grade of ore is used to determine the efficient drill-hole spacing. Assay data from approximately 50 known copper deposits were studied, and the relationships of the statistical parameters of these deposits were computed. Drilling requirements for various precisions of the estimates of grade of ore were computed for some of these known deposits to serve as guides for drilling future copper deposits. The effect of various geologic factors on the trend in grade of ore and, therefore, on the drilling requirements is shown for certain deposits.
