The Pacific Northwest has an abundance of seamy, coarse granite and basalt rock. It is used primarily for road construction. Small quarries are opened nearest the road work to cut the cost of hauling. The crushers are portable. Small diameter holes 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" are placed close together to insure proper fragmentation. It is not unusual to load and shoot 100 to 700 holes 40' deep.

This paper discusses development, test data, field trials, performance, application and possible economics of high-energy blasting agents fueled with Nitropropane that can be bulk loaded into downholes or packed into waterproof packages at densities between 1.10 and 1.25 gm/cc and that yield calculated detonation pressures of 50 kilobars in small diameters to 100 kilobars in diameters over six inches. Using high-density nitrate, downhole densities of over 1.4 have been attained in field trials with correspondingly high calculated detonation pressures.

Large production blasts involving many series in parallel have long been a source of complication. When speed and accuracy are most necessary in blast preparation an efficient and precise method of wiring is required. After loading a large number of holes and being pressured for time, due to lack of daylight, equipment shutdown, etc., an effective hook-up plan can eliminate many last minute problems. It is the intention of this paper to offer a simplified wiring proceedure which when employed can save precious time and encourage efficient and economical utilization of blasting personnel and material.

The velocity with which the burden moves after blasting is of concern for safety and economic reasons. Models developed for motion velocity by various researchers were reviewed and likely model parameters were used to develop statistically significant models. Regression analysis and residual analysis were used to determine the model coefficients and the accuracy of the models.

Recovery of contaminated groundwater migrating through bedrock can be very difficult due to the low transmissivity of many bedrock fracture systems. To overcome these difficulties, a system of controlled "trench" blasting has been used on several projects to assist in cutting off and collecting groundwater plumes in bedrock. By using a combination of trench blasting and presplitting techniques, linear "fracture" zones are created in appropriate locations to significantly increase flow into recovery wells and control plume migration.

Sands Hill Coal, located in Wellston, Ohio produces coal for steam generation and crushed limestone for the aggregate market in southeastern Ohio. This paper concerns the blasting and production of the limestone which lies between the #5 and #4 coal seams. The limestone bed averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness and is overlain with 17 to 20 feet of shale from the floor of the #5 seam.

Accidental explosions occur throughout the world. They can happen at chemical plants, fireworks plants, grain depots, or as a result of collisions involving volatile or hazardous chemicals. It is interesting, as we know as blasters, that we can take two very harmless products and mix them under certain conditions and produce a violent explosion. It is often very difficult for the investigator to determine the magnitudes of blasts after the fact. However, an estimate must be made to settle vibration and airblast damage claims. The blasting consultant or technical representative is often called upon to act as an expert to mitigate these claims.

The reformulation of military explosives and solid propellants into commercial explosives offers a unique solution to the problem of disposing of high energy materials with essentially zero environmental impact at a low cost and with a salable product. Studies using the insensitive PBX PBXN-4 have been completed through the pilot plant stage and have been successfully tested as a mining explosive. A number of other military explosives have been examined and their VODs and heats of explosions determined and in some instances tested in 'field" operations.

Air transport is limited to 1.4 explosives on cargo aircraft and 1.4S classified explosives on passenger aircraft, so most samples cannot be transported by air. Ocean transport is a possibility, but due to stowage and segregation regulations of the IMDG code, a very expensive one. Road transport is often the only solution, but high explosives require special trucks with licensed drivers. The solution to these logistic problems is solved by creating a 1.4S (Class C) classification for all high explosives, when packed in special containment vessels.

Structure is the main aspect affecting the performance of emulsion explosive. Calculation of such structure parameters as osmosis pressure, interface area per unit volume etc. must be helpful to the understanding of the structure of emulsion explosive. This paper has solved the Laplace-Young Equation for simplified monodisperse emulsion system by Galerkin method, and gained the relationship between mean curvature, contact angle, volume fraction, fractional film area and interface area per unit volume. The paper also presents a new expression of osmosis pressure at non zero contact angle.

There are four large limestone quarries, located nearby Cairo metropolitan. Drilling and blasting operations are used to extract limestone for the cement industries. In these quarries, the blast vibration should be kept below a certain limit. One of these quarries is Tourah Portland Cement Company (TPCC) limestone quarry which, lies near important and historical large caves, within Tourah Mountain. Therefore, control of blast vibration level becomes very critical.

Drill trajectory deviation is a recurring problem in vertical retreat stoping operations. As a result of this deviation, 60 kilogram (165 millimetre diameter) and 103 kilogram (302 millimetre diameter) explosive charges are routinely detonated beyond ore/waste contact zones. Consequently, there follows a reduction in finished stope wall stability and an increase in ore dilution.

Griesemer Stone located in Springfield, Missouri has supplied aggregate in Southwest Missouri since 1946. In 1954 the decision was made to mine the formation and utilize the mined out area for warehouse space. As advancement proceeded, entrances and small diameter air shafts for ventilation were needed and had to be added. It was decided in 1989 to sink an 8' diameter air shaft designed to move 200,000 cubic feet of air per minute with the help of (4) four 50,000 CFM Loren Cook Fans.
