There are many points still obscure regarding the nature of coal-workers'- pneumokoniosis, but the interpretation of the disease has been greatly clarified in recent years. It is now known that exposure to fumes or gases or other conditions peculiar to coal-mining are not necessary factors in the production of pneumokoniosis. The same disease occurs in coal-trimmers working in the docks, and it is thus established that the inhaled dust is the primary factor. On the other hand, there is no completely satisfactory explanation of the distribution of the disease. Geological and petrological studies have not given an unequivocal explanation of the difference in incidence in different parts of the coalfield. It is an open question whether the quantity of dust inhaled is more important than its chemical composition. However, there is ample evidence from the medical side that elimination of dust and of tuberculosis from the environment of coal workers will be required to prevent pneumokoniosis. Much is being done with regard to elimination of dust, and a similar energetic action is required in regard to tuberculosis.

Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives. In 1903, seventeen years after mining of the Witwatersrand gold-bearing reefs started, the findings erf the Miners' Phthisis Commission (Transvaal) resulted in the initiation of measures with the object of controlling dust production. The substance of these measures was as follows: Removal of persons from places where they would be exposed to blasting fumes; use of water to suppress dust made in drilling and in other operations; supply and control of air to working-places; filtration of dusty air; and determination of the amount of the dust in the air. Broadly speaking, progress in dust control has followed these four lines with increasing success as the nature of the problem has become better known. Complete success has not, however, been achieved, partly because increasing mechanization of mining has intensified the problem and partly because the application of these measures is not infallible, being subject, in many cases, to human control. A brief summary of the development of these measures will lead to a description of present-day practice.

25th Julius Wernher memorial lecture given at Tunnelling '91, sixth international tunnelling symposium held in London, 14-18 April 1991. The title gives the lecturer a chance to share some of the lessons he has learnt in a lifetime of tunnelling and particularly in the last six years of his involvement with the Channel Tunnel and the International Tunnelling Association. These included: the difficulties of split contracts but the problems arising with Eurotunnel over the need to create a single owner to whom the banks could lend; the peripatetic nature of tunnellers who built London's underground in the 1960s and returned to build the Channel Tunnel from Egypt, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia; the increasing requirement for strategic planning resulting in tunnels between European countries and the need for engineers to deal with decision-makers; EU work on harmonising regulations so that there need no longer be, for example, arguments over which regulations should be followed for temporary electrical equipment in the section of the UK tunnel that is technically in France; the huge improvements in safety standards and attitudes; the enormous increase in the scale of undertakings and individual contracts, with an accompanying change in attitudes to logistics; technological advances to cater for the high performance now required of equipment; and the rising importance of environmental issues. The lecturer also briefly touches on the work of the International Tunnelling Association

Mixtures of silver chloride and copper chloride are produced during gold refining by the Miller process. A study was carried out into the reduction with iron of a synthetic Miller chloride containing 13.64 mass% Ag and 2.42 mass% Cu. The effects of smelting temperature and time and of additions of iron and borax were investigated. The results were interpreted in terms of metal recovery and quality. Temperature did not have a significant effect on metal recovery above the melting point of the metal product. Borax additions reduced vapour losses and improved metal recovery. With excess iron it was possible to achieve silver recoveries of about 100% and copper recoveries of about 70%. The metal product contained on average 76.1 mass% Ag, 7.5 mass% Cu and 12.8 mass% Fe.

Sequences in open pit mining must be planned and regularly revised to incorporate changes in the variables which affect profitability. Interactive computer planning with colour graphic facilities is an effective tool for this purpose in the short and medium term. An interactive computer planning system for medium-size, low grade porphyry copper-molybdenum open pits is described. The planning system proved especially valuable during the critical stages of pushback mining when deep, inner pit ore was nearly depleted and the erratic grades of the next pushback provided ore and marginal material at a time of depressed metal prices.

Carbon tetrachloride was found to be a very efficient chlorinating agent for anatase concentrate, even at the low temperatures that were investigated (250-400 degrees C). For example, at 400 degrees C about 90% of the anatase concentrate was found to have been chlorinated within 60 minutes

Two problems present themselves for examination from an analytical and critical point of view: 1. The first reactions of the alveolar walls to inhaled dusts. 2. The precise nature of the action of mineral dusts.

An account is given of the history and operation of the Straits Tin market and the Penang price. The procedure by which the official ruling tin price is determined is presented and the way in which bids are treated is outlined: the price declared in Penang is the result of a joint operation by the two Malaysian smelters and is arrived at by finding the highest price at which the whole of the day's offerings for sale can be sold, thus reflecting the marriage of the offerings of the individual mine producers with the demand for Straits Tin from the consuming countries of the world. A system of accurate weighing, sampling and assaying of concentrates delivered to the smelters' premises enables the various ore-buying agencies of the two smelters to notify their central offices promptly of the estimated tin content of the concentrates their customers wish to price that day, so that by 11.00 a.m. both smelters will have exchanged with each other figures giving the total quantity of metal they have for inclusion in the day's market, at the same time exchanging particulars of the bids they have received. Miners are encouraged to sell regularly for cash and an evenness is thus achieved which avoids large daily fluctuations in overall quantity.
