The depression of pyrite in marmatite flotation by a new depressant Sodium Glycerine-xanthate (SGX) has been investigated through microflotation, zeta potential, and adsorption measurements in systems open to the atmosphere. The flotation tests of single mineral show that in the presence of SGX, marmatite can be activated by Cu2+ and shows good flotability, while pyrite can?t be activated and therefore shows poor flotability, as a result these two minerals can be separated using butyl xanthate as the collector. The depression mechanism of SGX on sulfide minerals is discussed based on Zeta potential and adsorption isotherm. Zeta potential experiments demonstrate that at the presence of Cu2+, SGX can strongly adsorb on the surface of pyrite, while it can?t adsorb on the surface of marmatite, thus the results are in accordance with those of flotation experiments; the results of adsorption isotherms show that the adsorption density of SGX on pyrite is greater.

Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.

"Integrated utilization of natural resources using energy-saving and waste-free technologies is relevant around the world. This applies to such type of raw material as titanium-magnetite ore. Shortage of ilmenite raw materials in the Republic of Kazakhstan for titanium slag melting challenges the search of alternative titanium-containing raw materials, titanomagnetites in particular. At the same time there are deposits of indigenous titanomagnetite ores of huge reserves, which can become the complex raw material for production of iron, titanium and vanadium. Tymlay field in the South-Eastern part of Chu-Ili watershed is of particular interest, within the Karasay ore unit with iron content of 30,4 and titanium dioxide - 10%, and after beneficiation titano-magnetite concentrate contains Fe-52,4; TiO2-of 16,06%. Technology of titanium-magnetite concentrate ore-thermal melting was developed at Tymlay deposit producing hot metal and low titanium slag that can become the raw material for titanium production using chloride method. Slag produced in course of titanomagnetite ore-smelting consists mainly of alumosilicates and sodium silico titanates, magnesium and calcium titanates, titanium dioxide and lower titanium oxides. Following operations were carried out to improve titanium slag quality: slag sintering with sodium hydroxide; cake leaching with water to remove water-soluble impurities; to reduce the number of operations impurities leaching with hydrochloric acid was combined with pyrohydrolysis of titanic acid; rutile concentrate production (85% TiO2, 7,66% SiO2), silica removal by means of sodium hydroxide solution treatment, finally sellable rutile concentrate was produced with titanium dioxide 91-92% and silica 1,7 to 2,0% content. Based on research results technological scheme of titano-magnetite concentrate processing at Tymlay deposit was proposed producing hot metal and certified rutile concentrate, suitable for chlorination."

"This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the REE-Y-Nb-Zr complex ore from the ‘Khalzan Buregtei’ deposit, Mongolia. Pre-concentration based on mineralogical studies was investigated at the Unit of Mineral Processing (AMR) and the Institute of Applied Mineralogy and Economic Geology of RWTH Aachen University. In order to minimize the energy consumption in the most energy intensive grinding process a pre-concentration process using dry magnetic separation of particle sizes coarser than required for the liberation of the valuable ore minerals was designed. Dry magnetic separation in the particle size range of 63-250 µm is suitable as the pre-concentration method, due to the intergrowth of REE-Y-Nb-Zr bearing minerals with magnetic minerals determined by QEMSCAN© analysis. The results showed that a mass reduction of 45.3 wt.-% at high recoveries of REE, Y, Nb and Zr (90 wt.-% and higher) in the pre-concentration product was achieved at the beginning of the process chain. The improvement of process efficiency as shown in this study depends on the abundance and association of minerals affecting the magnetic properties (e.g. hematite) of the ores. Therefore, these mineralogical parameters are as important as grain size and ore grade for the geometallurgical evaluation of potential mining operations at ‘Khalzan Buregtei’.INTRODUCTION Polymetallic deposits containing other critical elements besides REE have the advantage of being robust to economic development and fluctuations of individual metal prices. (Gronen et al., 2016). These deposits can host economic grades of heavy and light REE, Y, Nb, Ta, Zr in complex mineralogical compositions. About 120 deposits of this type are known worldwide, including ‘Norra Kärr’ in Sweden, ‘Strange Lake’ in Canada and ‘Khalzan Buregtei’ in Mongolia which are not valued economically yet. "The process modeling and simulation studies aim for better process operation and favorable environmental impact. The objective of this work is to set up a simulation model of the Assarel copper flotation circuit for planning and optimization of the process with the aim of increased metal recovery. The model is parameterized based on laboratory flotation tests of ore samples from the Assarel mine together with mineralogical studies by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). A combination of several techniques allows reliable identification of mineralogical composition of the selected samples. The changes in the proportion between sulfide minerals in various products along the circuit have been also documented. Further, this information is used in the simulation model and in data reconciliation procedures for establishing mass balance. The simulation accuracy is studied by comparing the simulations with the plant survey based mass balance. Constructed simulation model can be used to run alternative process scenarios. As an example, the flotation circuit performance with different reagent regimes is simulated based on data from batch flotation tests. Two reagents were considered for this purpose, dithiocarbamate-based one and xanthogen formate/mercaptan blend. It has been revealed that these reagents do not have the same influence on the selective flotation. The one improves flotation of gold and overall recovery but without notable selective action. In contrast, the other showed better selectivity towards copper, rejecting more gangue and lowering gold recovery. The model is also applicable for process optimization studies with different feed compositions, flowrates and circuit configurations. INTRODUCTION In the pursuit for elevated technological indicators, finding an optimal set of process parameters fully utilizing the potential of the equipment is a key factor to success. Over the past decades, there has been a substantial development in flotation circuit optimization through performance benchmarking using metallurgical modelling and steady-state computer simulation. Practical simulation engineering tools are based on experimental data obtained from laboratory tests and from plant surveys and operation data. With the help of flotation models, it is possible to study grade-recovery response with different feed compositions and throughputs, and with various cell-operating parameters, as well as to evaluate and design different flowsheet configurations. Outotec’s HSC Chemistry® software, which incorporates simulation and mass balancing modules alongside with several other tools, can assist with this optimization (Mattsson et al., 2015)."

Deposit of Jinbaoshan platinum group metals (PGMs) ore ranks the second in Yunnan province, China. Study on process mineralogy shows that the grade of copper and nickel in the ore is just 0.16% and 0.20% respectively. Moreover, the impurities magnesium and iron and silicon are rich in the ore. The copper and nickel sulfides in the ore, especially the minerals of PGMs, are finely disseminated with the gangues like serpentine. Fine grinding is necessary, and high content of MgO in the concentrate is inevitable through traditional flotation technology on the basis of process mineralogy studies. Achievements on process mineralogy studies are applied to guide the flotation tests successfully. Progress on flotation has been made through comprehensive studies. Suitable grinding by two stages is required for the finely disseminated PGM sulphide ore to achieve the liberation of valuable minerals. Stage grinding and stage separation shall be conducted for a better recovery of valuable minerals. The oxidation state of mineral surface of sulphides has a profound effect on flotation of the ultra-fine sulphides, especially the pentlandite. The combined use of collectors enhances the selective collecting on the ultra-fine and low-grade valuable minerals, is of critical importance.

With the scarcity of fresh potable water on mining sites, particularly those in arid and remote regions, the use of sea water is being contemplated and actually used at a number of mineral concentrators worldwide. The use of sea water, with its associated high dissolved solids content and ionic strength will affect all aspects of processing (e.g. frothing and froth stability, buffering capacity for pH control, solubility of minerals and corrosion of media and equipment). Selective depression of pyrite is more difficult in sea water due to the increased lime addition to achieve a high pH. This results in a reduction in molybdenite recovery. The use of grinding media with various chromium contents and its effect on subsequent Cu and Mo flotation has been investigated in the current study, with both grinding and flotation testing conducted in artificial sea water. Pulp chemistry (pH, Eh and DO) have been logged during grinding, and flotation testing was conducted on subsequent slurries. The flotation results show that the system is remarkably robust and able to cope with wide ranges of pulp chemistry parameters. The simulation study on the process of iron ore beneficiation plant of Essar Steel, Kirandul was carried out. The iron ore fines and slimes generated nearby Bailadila mines of NMDC are used as raw materials for this beneficiation plant. The capacity of the plant is 1400 TPH operating in parallel in two streams. The capacity of the plant was utilized about 60% of throughput capacity. To improve the plant capacity as well as quality performance, the simulation study was conducted to detect the bottleneck of the process. The process samples were collected from input and output of each processing unit operation to generate the data base for simulation study at the feed rate of 400 and 500 TPH of iron ore fines in a single stream. The characteristics data i.e., breakage and selection functions were generated using MILLSOFT package for simulation of ball mills. Then MODSIM package was used to evaluate the performance of each unit operation to identify the bottleneck. It was established by a simulation study that the intermediate thickener draws high current when the feed rate is more than 400 TPH due to high torque drawn by rotating rake because of presence of coarse particles in the input stream to thickener. The problem was sorted out by classification of input stream of thickener to remove the coarse particles. Then the process was simulated at its rated capacity, and experimental validation studies at the plant were also conducted at the feed capacity of 600 and 700 TPH by modification of process flowsheet. The experimental data was almost matching with simulated data. Finally, the processing plant is running with full rated capacity without any bottleneck. A citric acid leaching test after heavy medium separation process was performed to remove the heavy metal contaminat such as Pb, Cu, and Zn from contaminated soil. The lead component was removed from soil by heavy medium separation whereas zinc component shows 0 % - 37.9 % removal ratio with particle size. The citric acid leaching was conducted to remove the remained zinc component. The removal ratio of Zn reached to more than 95 % under the conditions; 10 % in pulp density, 200 rpm in agitation speed, 50 °C, 2 mol/L in citric acid concentration at 2 hrs in leaching time. These results suggest that the heavy medium separation method followed by citric acid leaching is effective for treatment of soil contaminated with various chemical forms of heavy metal. "A phosphate deposit of estimated 6 billion tons of P2O5 is located 180 to 300 meters below the sea level, 185 kilometers north of port Luderitz, Namibia. The ore bed is 6 kilometers wide and 220 kilometers long. The ore deposit analyzing 16% P2O5 is loose sediment of 1.5 meters thick without over burden. Sizing of the ore to - 1.4 mm + 0.150 mm improves the grade to 23.54% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery at 83.75% containing phosphate pellets and flakes of sea shells. Clay, bacterial debris as organic matter, flakes of broken sea shells and fine phosphate containing particles report to - 0.150 mm fraction and + 1.4 mm fraction contains sea shells and few phosphate containing pellets. The mineralogical composition of phosphate containing pellets is estimated (Droste, T.C., 2004) 80% frankolite, 6% pyrite, 4% illite, 3% quartz, 3% amorphous SiO2, 1% carbonates, 1% organic carbon and = 1% ilmenite, magnetite, zircon etc. The phosphate content in the pellets is around 27.7% P2O5. Trials to separate by gravity or flotation processes were not successful. Leaching of carbonates (sea shell flakes) under mild acidic condition (= 2% acetic acid or HCl solutions) or calcinations followed by leaching however yielded residues (concentrates) of grades 27.85 - 32.74% P2O5 at P2O5 recoveries ranging from 78.45 - 96.8% P2O5."

Bioleaching method makes use of bacteria in solving metallic sulphides, so that these bacteria tend to convert insoluble metal sulphides into soluble sulphates. Since the kinetics description of this process is inevitable for better interpretation of relation between metabolism and growth of live organisms, as well as optimization of metals extraction processes, in this paper, this description is represented and designed in mathematic (kinetics) model for copper sulphide minerals based on Monod kinetics model. According to this model, special growth rate of bacteria (?) is a hyperbola function of restrictive substrate concentration (S). By Solving and developing of Monod kinetics model, a comprehensive kinetics model for bioleaching of copper sulphide minerals results. The designed is also applicable for other metal sulphides.

"Relating flotation performance to the electrochemical characteristics of a pulp is complex both in fundamental research and in practice. In the case of thiol collectors, different Eh values in the flotation system can result in the formation of the dimer or the metal thiolate which may or may not enhance the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, are usually manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system. A variation in pulp potential may also be achieved by the addition of potential modifiers such as sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). There exists anecdotal evidence which suggests that the addition of small amounts of H2O2 to the flotation process can improve sulphide mineral recovery. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the addition of the potential modifier, H2O2, on sulphide mineral recoveries and grades in the flotation of sulphide minerals from two copper bearing ores from China and compare the results to those obtained for a PGM bearing ore South Africa. Batch flotation tests were conducted using the three different ores at the natural pH of the different systems, in the presence of a xanthate collector and the absence and presence of H2O2 as a potential modifier. The results indicate that the addition of carefully controlled low concentrations of H2O2 resulted in improvements in flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONElectrochemical potential as a control parameter in the flotation of sulphide minerals has been widely studied (Allison et al., 1972; Gardner and Woods, 1979; Ross and Van Deventer, 1985; Chander, 2003; Woods, 2003; Javadi, 2013). There is concensus that in order to be recovered during flotation, sulphide minerals require a suitable redox environment. During the flotation process thiol collectors and sulphide minerals are involved in electrochemical reactions which result in the formation of hydrophobic species at the mineral surface (Finkelstein and Goold, 1972; Rand and Woods, 1984). Sulphide minerals act as semiconductors and electrons are transferred during the interaction of the mineral with collector. The resultant potential difference and its magnitude are responsible for the transfer of electrons and the rate of the reaction (Bard and Faulkner, 2001; Fuerstenau et al., 2007). Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, may be manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system (Heyes and Trahar, 1979). The use of potential modifiers viz. reducing or oxidizing agents which include H2O2, NaClO, and NaHS, is an alternative method by which to control the potential of the pulp in a flotation system which may or may not promote the flotation of desired minerals (Rao, 2004). The oxidizing agent, H2O2, undergoes a cathodic reaction which can result in the enhanced flotation of valuable minerals. The potential of the system is increased which results in a shift in the mixed potential of a mineral. The magnitude of the over-potential influences the rate of the oxidation process and thus the flotation response of sulphide minerals (Kocabag and Guler, 2008). Equation 1 shows the proposed oxidation of xanthate by H2O2 (Lipkina and Streltysn, 1970)."

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. Tangdan copper oxide deposit, the largest independent copper oxide deposit in China so far, is located in the northeast of Yunnan province, southwest of China. The ore from this deposit is characterized by: low grade, high oxidation ratio, and fine-grained disseminated, resulting in poor flotation recovery. The analysis of plant flotation data reveals that the loss of copper minerals into tailings is mainly with coarse size fraction due to insufficient liberation and fine size fractions, especially minus 10 microns fraction, which proved to be very difficult-to-float with conventional flotation. In order to improve the performances of plant flotation of this ore, laboratory flotation tests were conducted with the pure malachite, which was the principle copper oxide mineral in Tangdan copper ore deposit. The results obtained suggested that a finer grinding (up to -325 mesh or even -400 mesh) be needed to decrease the loss with coarse size fraction, and vacuum flotation is a promising way for the recovery of the fine malachite effectively.

The downstream treatment of chloride leach solutions of WPCB for recovery of base and precious metals by a combination of adsorption and precipitation processes were carried out. A synthetic leach solution (1 M HCl, 116.5 g/L Cl-, 30 g/L Cu2+, 2.5 g/L Fe3+, 5 mg/L Au3+, 10 mg/L Ag+ and 20 mg/L Pd2+), which was prepared based on the composition of the pregnant leach solution obtained in the previous study was used in the tests. The leach solution was initially subjected to activated carbon (AC) adsorption (20 g/L AC, 80°C) in which gold was selectively recovered over silver and palladium i.e., 88% Au recovery at 0.5 h (92% at 3.5 h) compared with only 3-6% for Ag/Pd. Copper and iron were also observed to adsorb on AC as indicated by 1.4% and 17% decline, in their respective concentrations. Following the adsorption and filtration stage, metallic copper was added into the gold-barren solution to allow reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, and to cement Pd on metallic copper. Over the mixing period (1 h), 93% of the Pd was recovered while only 1.4% of silver was cemented onto metallic copper. Subsequently, the leach solution was gradually neutralised by NaOH to pH 4, 7.5 and 9.5 for the precipitation of copper as cuprite (Cu2O). It was found that 41% and 46% of Cu and Ag, respectively, were precipitated at pH 4 at which iron was almost totally (99.8%) removed from solution. Precipitation of copper and silver was increased further at high pHs. At pH 9.5, cumulative recoveries for copper and silver were 91% and 85%, respectively. XRD analysis of the precipitates confirmed the presence of cupric copper oxides/hydroxides and revealed that copper losses occurred at pH 4 was due to the undesired presence of cupric copper in the solution.

A detailed study was undertaken to beneficiate sub-grade iron ore sample from Kenojhar District, Orissa, India containing 57% Fe (T), 7.7% SiO2, 4.8% Al2O3, 4 % L.O.I. 0.4% TiO2,1.3 % Mn and traces of S(T) to make it suitable for the user industry. The mineralogical study indicated that it predominantly consists of haematite with subordinate amounts of goethite and clay. Quartz, Cryptomelane / Psilomelane, Pyrolusite, Gibbsite, Feldspar and Muscovite mica were present in very minor to trace amounts. The Denver grind ability tests indicated, that the sample could be categorized as ?medium soft to medium.? The Bond ball mill work index was determined to be 14.19 kwh per short ton. The beneficiation process involved classification followed by tabling of the classified sand, ground to minus 48 mesh size. The table slimes were subjected to Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). The developed process yielded a composite concentrate from tabling and WHIMS operations assaying 65% Fe(T), 2% SiO2, 1.8% Al2O3, 2% Mn and 0.9% LOI with a recovery of 60.1% Fe (T), amounting to 52.5 wt.% yield. To meet the size specifications for pellet making, it was further ground. Dewatering studies were also carried out on the ground combined concentrate and rejects. The thickener area of ground combined concentrate using 0.02 kg/t of Sufloc A 1115 flocculant was 0.02 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. And for the combined rejects using 0.12 kg/t of flocculant, it was 0.035 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. The moisture content, in the pressure filtration cake, in the ground combined concentrate product was 10.0%, and productivity was 506.7 kg/m2h. Thus, by thickening and filtration of process products, 90% of water used in the process could be recovered. The study highlights the development of a simple and cost effective flowsheet with almost complete water recovery for a subgrade iron ore sample. Keywords: tabling, WHIMS, thickener, filtration

Often plans to increase plant throughput provide an opportunity for optimising plant equipment and operating methods. This was the case in 2005 at TISCO Jianshan Iron Mine, when an increase in production was planned. The thickening circuit had presented a limitation to the plant throughput and operation with poor overflow clarity and underflow density. Following a course of test work by Outotec, a 53m diameter Supaflo® High Rate Thickener (HRT) was selected for the duty. From early stages of operation of the new thickener, the benefits have been dramatic, including: ? Improved tailings underflow density by 9% ? Improved Overflow clarity to less than 150ppm ? Considerably decreased the water and energy consumption as well as operation cost ? Stable and reliable operation This paper looks at this installation as a case study and compares the previous thickener installa-tion performance with the performance of the single 53m HRT.

The Minas-Rio Project, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is currently under construction. The new plant will have a regrinding circuit that uses VertimillTM. The objective is to process itabirite iron ores and it is expected that the consumption of media will represent a large part of the plant operating cost. Many studies in the literature indicate that the size of the grinding media directly influences the grinding efficiency. The size distribution of the charge media is related to the surface area of the charge. In this study, a sample of itabirite iron ore was tested with respect to grindability in a laboratory scale ball mill. The test mill was equipped with a torque device to accurately measure power consumption, as required for the determination of energy specific kinetic parameters. Five tests were carried out with different sizes of steel balls and with SICAM (sub-inch Cast Media). The size distributions of the feed and product of the several grinding tests were used to calibrate population balance model parameters for each condition. The results confirmed that the ball charge with smaller diameter is the most efficient among the different media charge tested.

The effects of trace element substitutions in sphalerite mineral structure on optimised floatation response have, as yet, not been fully constrained or fully understood. To further this important field of study, this contribution focusses specifically on mineral and surface chemistry, and electro-chemistry of Cd- and Co- substituted synthetic sphalerites using Raman spectroscopy and Zeta potential experimentation. Raman spectroscopy illustrates that the presence of these impurities results in the introduction of a new mode, the relative intensity of which can be correlated (Cd r2=0.95 and Co r2= 0.99) to the dopant concentration. Comparison to X-ray Diffraction results measuring the unit cell parameter further shows that this relative intensity (Cd r2=0.81 and Co r2= 0.99) may provide insights into the degree of lattice strain within the mineral structure. The zeta potential distribution of an un-activated Cd-sphalerite show no detrimental effect as function of Cd content. Although the iso-electric point shifted from 2.45 at 1 wt.% Cd to 2.69 at 3.68 wt.% Cd, the zeta potential remained negative at alkaline media. Conversely, cobalt at low concentration of 0.36 wt.% had a detrimental effect on the surface charge, resulting to a close to neutral zeta potential at different pH. The adsorption of Cu ions on the surface of Co-bearing sphalerite conditioned in an alkaline media slightly increases the zeta potential of Co-sphalerite. While the Cd-bearing sphalerite decrease in negative zeta potential at >1 wt.% Cd indicating a complete exchange between Cu and Zn. The results presented herein illustrate that, based on the chemical nature of the substituting metal; sphalerite will exhibit multiple response to flotation reagents. Maximum recovery of zinc can thus only be achieved through multidisciplinary study and fundamental understanding of the effects of cation substitution on mineral structure and surface chemistry, the latter necessarily affecting the floatation response.

The alteration of surface properties of chalcopyrite after biological conditioning with Leptospirillum ferriphilum was studied by adsorption, zeta-potential, contact angle and bioleaching tests. The strains of L. ferriphilum cultured using different energy sources (either soluble ferrous ion or chalcopyrite) were used. The adhesion of bacteria to the chalcopyrite surface was a fast process. Additionally, the adsorption of substrate-grown bacteria was greater and faster than that of liquid-grown ones. The isoelectric point (IEP) of chalcopyrite moved toward that of pure L. ferriphilum after conditioning with bacteria. The chalcopyrite contact angle curves motioned diversely in the 9K culture with and without chalcopyrite powders. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis indicated that in the bioleaching process by L. ferriphilum, the surface of chalcopyrite was covered with sulfur and jarosite. Furthermore, iron phase dissolved preferentially from chalcopyrite surface during bioleaching from EDS detection. The copper extraction was low resulting from the formation of a passivation layer. The major component of the passivation layer that blocked continuous copper extraction was sulfur, not jarosite.
