"In the past, simulation was considered to be an offline tool disconnected from plant operation. Advancements in the computation power combined with utilizing physics and chemistry sciences have allowed us to significantly improve the modeling and simulation technology for mining and mineral processing. This paper investigates the benefits of first principle models and simulation by connecting them to real time operation. Process data are connected to high fidelity models executed in parallel to the operation. In recent literature, this concept is known as Digital Twins. The Digital Twin is used for various purposes such as optimization, virtual instrumentation and condition monitoring. Using IDEAS™ simulation software we are able to construct a digital twin for different equipment inside a mineral processing plant. Two case studies for building a digital twin for the primary hydrocyclone feed pump and thickener underflow are presented. Using the pump’s model, a digital twin is developed and is installed in a gold extraction plant that is able to infer the slurry density in real time. Additionally, it is used for detecting sanding in the pipes and impeller condition monitoring.INTRODUCTION Since the eighties, thanks to advances in computation technologies, computer based simulation of processes using first principle models has become a well-known engineering tool for various industries. As our understanding of processes has increased, their representative models have become more realistic and more sophisticated. Due to this increase of accuracy, use of simulation is becoming more fundamental in process industries. The main goals to use accurate simulation is to decrease the engineering and construction cost, optimize the process design and improve the operation performance by decreasing operation cost and increasing efficiency. The term Digital Twin was first introduced in 2010 by NASA (Shafto et al., 2012) in aerospace industry. Subsequently, the concept quickly spread through other industries. As of today, no standard organization has provided an official and unique definition of Digital Twin for process industries. However, there are three important aspects that are common throughout various descriptions. When simulation is core functionality of the process (1) along the entire life cycle of the plant (2) with direct linkage to operation (3), it is called that process has a Digital Twin. According to Gartner, the concept of Digital Twin has elected as fourth most important disruptive technology for the year 2018 (https://www.gartner.com/, 2017)."

The 14MW SAG mill at Tarkwa, Ghana, experienced a frozen drop charge incident on 10 February 2010. This caused downtime of 112 hours, a repair cost of $200k and production loss of 162,000 tons, corresponding to a loss of $8.9M. A new locked charge protection system was installed on the two Tarkwa mills on 30 July 2010, mitigating this risk. This system calculates the ore angle in real time while the mill is starting up and trips the mill if the ore angle exceeds a trip angle setting. The calculation of the ore angle is derived from the mill motor rotor currents only - no mechanical transducers are required. The head of Gold Fields West Africa, Peter Turner, says of the new system: "This is excellent work and the type of technology that has had and will continue to have, major opportunity cost impacts on our business."

Successful demonstration of The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) was achieved in November 2004 at the pilot-scale, About 30 tons of magnesium producing recipe was smelted in the DC arc furnace over a continuous operation of 8-days, Twenty-two furnace batching-tapping operations were carried out at a feed rate of 525kg/h and a smelting temperature of 1600-1700°C, The MgO content in the produced slag was as low as 6,7%, and averaged 9,2% MgO, resulting in an overall magnesium extraction of 77%, which reached 87% during good operating periods, Magnesium vapour was extracted at a rate of 70-85kg/h and was delivered to the condenser that was operated at 680-720°C, The magnesium was captured in the condenser crucible in a liquid state, allowing its prompt tapping, More than 3500kg of crude metal were produced over 15 on-line metal tapping operations, On average, a condensation efficiency of 85% was achieved during the entire testwork, which peaked at 87% during steady operations, The quality of the crude metal was similar to, if not better than, that of the Magnetherm's crude magnesium, A pre-feasibility study has indicated that the MTMP has the potential for lower capital and operating costs as compared to the electrolytic process, and therefore Mintek and its consortium partners are exploring opportunities for a commercial production facility.

"The flow of slurries in pipelines is governed by many variables, and the study of the influence of each of these variables is difficult, if not impossible, in some cases. Many correlations are available which fit data within a given range. However, no one method is yet available to design a slurry pipeline for all desired conditions without at least some physical measurements on the slurry itself. For this reason, the slurry pipeline facilities at the Saskatchewan Research Council have been developed during the past 12 years and it is hoped that the development will continue until the process is thoroughly understood and test facilities are no longer necessary. This paper outlines methods currently used and under development at the Saskatchewan Research Council for measurement, control and study of the variables governing the flow of slurries."

"To comply with the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, the automotive industry is aiming to reduce weight and increase the power and efficiency of small displacement engines through the application of forced induction technologies. As an example, there are now several 2.0 litre turbocharged engines in production, producing in excess of 240 hp. To meet the need for improved fatigue properties in the engine blocks used in these high-output engines, a new water-cooled chill technology is under exploration at UBC in partnership with General Motors and Nemak. A series of experimental techniques were used to assess the capability of the new chill to extract heat from an A319 casting in the vicinity of the main bearing bulk head. The results show that this method has the potential to achieve a reduction in secondary dendrite arm spacing thus meeting the new microstructural specifications for these engines.INTRODUCTION The automotive industry is working to meet the stricter efficiency requirements laid out within the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations (Bastani, 2012; Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000), while at the same time not sacrificing performance. One approach is to increase the use of lightweight materials, which leads to a decrease in the overall vehicle weight and fuel consumption (Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000). Other approaches include smaller displacement engines and gas-electric hybrid drivetrains. However, one trend that is becoming clear, is a greater emphasis on force induction gasoline engines. This allows for weight reduction to be achieved with smaller displacement engines without sacrificing performance. One consequence of this approach is that the engine block materials are subject to higher in-service thermal and mechanical cyclic loads (Cole, 1995; Miller, 2011; Heysler, 2001) The fatigue properties of an alloy are strongly affected by a number of the, as-cast, microstructure features including, Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS), porosity and eutectic lamella spacing (including intermetallic ß-Al5FeSi platelets) (Mackay, 2010a; Mackay, 2010b; Viet-Duc, 2015; Casellas, 2005). It is generally accepted they can act as fatigue initiation sites and that a reduction in their size will result in an improvement in fatigue performance. For a given alloy chemistry, one of the key parameters affecting the length scale of all three is cooling rate (Mackay, 2000)."

"Manufacturing of Jaw CrushersOriginIn 1858 Eli Whitney Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock breaker-the Blake-type jaw crusher. Blake adapted a mechanical principal, the powerful toggle linkage system used to transform rotating motion and energy into oscillating mot ion and tremendous compressive forces. Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. However, about this time the jaw crusher came to life when the Power and Mining Machinery Co. built an even larger sized opening crusher-a giant 84-inch by 60-inch jaw crusher for a trap rock quarry in Pennsylvania. A 24-inch gyratory crusher became the ideal sized secondary machine for this size jaw. From that time on jaw crushers were looked on favourably as primary breakers and lines were brought up to date to parallel the already developed gyratory lines.FunctionMost heavy duty Blake-type jaw crushers work basically the same way. They are ruggedly designed and capable of crushing material in some cases in excess of 80, 000 p.s.i. compressive strength. They are very simple machines with few moving part s and, with the exception of replacement of renewable parts, are relatively maintenance free. It is quite common to have these machines in product ion for 20 to 30 years. The following will de scribe how these machines work. Large-diameter high-inertia flywheels which are connected to the main eccentric shaft, rotate inside a connecting rod type mechanism called a Pitman. It transforms rotating motion into vertical oscillating motion. This vertical motion is in turn transformed into reciprocating mot ion by means of a system of 2 toggles, each connected to the Pitman. The rear toggle is connected to the fixed rear head, and the front toggle is connected to the swing jaw which is hinged at the top of the crusher. With each rotation of the eccentric shaft the swing jaw opens and closes on rock which is fed into the crusher chamber, crushing the rock in a series of bites. These bites, or strokes as the y are called, usually vary between 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch at speeds of 120 to 200 strokes per minute. The reduction ratio of feed input to discharge is usually about 8 to I. Output capacities can vary from 100 tons/hour to 1200 tons/hour depending on the size of machine and its discharge opening. Horsepower requirements can vary from 75 hp to 400 hp.The entire crusher chamber is lined with replaceable 14070 manganese steel liner plates. This material is ideally suited for the job since it hardens as it wears during crusher operation. Manganese is also used in the high wear areas at each end of the toggle plates."

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. In the last four years, Compañia Minera Doña Ines de Collahuasi has been working in the application of advanced multivariate statistical techniques for the improvement of the metallurgical processes. In this paper the main conclusions for the application of multivariable analysis to the EW process are presented; including the identification of (target) process patterns according to throughput and quality criteria. Based on the process patterns, process variables hierarchies were identified by selecting the most influential ones, as well as to identify and isolate the root causes of pattern deviations and sub-standard operating conditions, cause-effect relationships were established, leading to the definition of process policies and controls to give early corrections to potential failures. The analysis was focused on cathode quality, specifically in its sulfur content, using an empirical model based on those variables that from a phenomenological and statistical stand point appeared to be the most influencing ones.

THE property of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is in Falconbridge township, approximately thirteen miles northwest of Sudbury. From the mine and townsite, a gravel road leads to Sudbury and a branch line of the Canadian National railway to Sudbury Junction. The ore deposit is at the southeastern corner of the 'Sudbury Basin'. It lies in a sheet-like mass, striking in an east-west direction, between norite to the north and greenstone to the south. The general attitude of the ore-body is vertical, but with frequent variations in dip of as much as 10° to the north or south. The deposit is very irregular in outline, the width varying from a few feet to eighty or ninety feet. In the vertical plane, rolls are frequently encountered. Gouge is very often present at one or both ore contacts. The norite to the north shows much jointing. The chief ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. The nickel content of the ore is usually double the copper content, average assays ranging from 2 to 2.5 per cent nickel and 1 to 1.5 per cent copper. The ore is of three main types: massive, breccia, and disseminated. The breccia ore, the most common type, consists of sulphides containing rounded inclusions of highly-altered country rock, which, in places, are so large that sorting is necessary in the stopes. In the norite, the breccia ore may grade into disseminated sulphides, which frequently are sufficiently concentrated for profitable mining. In places in the breccia ore, concentrations of solid sulphide masses occur. Until early in 1935, all mining at Falconbridge was by shrinkage scoping, but this method was found to be less and less suitable as greater depth was attained. When mining had reached the 1,000-foot level, ore drawn from large shrinkage stopes was found to have been diluted as much as fifty per cent by sloughing of the wall-rocks, caused by increased rock pressure and insufficient support. It was apparent that this method of stoping was un-suitable and -Mr. E. J. Martin was engaged to superintend the introduction of a method of cut-and-fill stoping.

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has been studied for a long time as a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technology for inspection of concrete structures. Currently, the most widely used technique for interpreting GPR data of concrete bridge decks is the one that based on the amplitudes measured at various interfaces such as asphalt-concrete, top rebar, or slab bottom. The assumption behind this technique is that a sound concrete deck should have the same reflection amplitude at these interfaces while any low number would indicate some sign of deterioration. Unfortunately, this assumption is not completely valid in most cases. As a consequence, the reported test results usually do not reflect real condition of concrete bridge decks in question. The main goal of this paper is therefore twofold: (1) to discuss the limitations of the amplitude analysis method, and (2) to propose a new model that interprets GPR data of concrete bridge decks. The model methodology is based on the comparison of GPR A-scans between two inspections, using the so-called correlation analysis. The results, indicated by the correlation coefficients, are then employed to develop a contour map that estimates different levels of deterioration. The model is then implemented to a case study in order to illustrate its methodology.

"IntroductionTHIS IS a brief discussion of certain regional and economic aspects of the Coast Range of British Columbia. Between Portland canal and the 60th parallel of latitude, only the eastern margin of the Range is in Canada. The solely British Columbia interval extends from Portland canal to Burrard inlet. Personal observations in various parts of this area form the basis for much of this paper.Regional GeologyGranitic RocksSome of the best, most continuous exposures in the Coast Range are found at sea level. Reconnaissance study of the coastline has shown that the Range is predominantly granitic in character, but there simplicity ends, for the term 'granitic' as applied to the Coast Range covers a variety of mineralogical compositions. Actual granite is quite uncommon, occurring mainly in irregular or dyke-like masses that do not achieve batholithic dimensions. It is commonly pinkish, relatively homogeneous, and exhibits few of the deformational features that are obvious in much of this plutonic complex.Most of the granitic rocks of the Range fall well within the compositional limits of quartz diorite and granodiorite. The problem of resolving the great mass of these rocks into smaller coherent units is in general a difficult one. As noted above, granitic rock of uniform composition and texture is found in restricted areas and can be outlined without much difficulty. One such body occurs on the southern shore of Nelson island."

The Zinifex's Hobart Smelter uses the paragoethite process to remove dissolved Fe(III) from concentrated zinc leach liquors. This produces a residue consisting primarily of 6-line ferrihydrite (a hydrated Fe(III) oxyhydroxide), several insoluble components derived from the calcined zinc concentrate neutralization agent and other precipitated phases, such as jarosite and silica. The precipitation of 6-line ferrihydrite in the paragoethite process was studied using a laboratory-scale continuous crystallizer, and the conditions were selected to limit high levels of dissolved silica and jarosite. This approach allowed the reactor pH and the rate of precipitation to be correlated with residue solid-liquid separation, particle size, morphology, residual zinc and sulfate concentrations, and phase formation (e.g., goethite, jarosite, schwertmannite, and 2- and 6-line ferrihydrite). These studies delineated the mechanism of 6-line ferrihydrite precipitation in the kinetically controlled paragoethite process, and its inter-relationship with goethite and jarosite precipitation under conditions where 6-line ferrihydrite is favoured. Unexpectedly, the generation of a more crystalline goethite precipitate with larger "primary" particle size did not produce a residue of improved properties, as bulk aggregates dictate the physical properties of the residue and not the crystallinity. Furthermore, it is difficult to precipitate 2-line ferrihydrite or schwertmannite under existing paragoethite process conditions.

The White Earth project is situated in a 31 km2 alkalic-carbonatite complex intruded into Precambrian granite and metamorphic rocks about 570 million years ago. "To minimize ore dilution induced by blast movement in surface mines, it is necessary to quantify such movement. This will enable more accurate location of the grade boundaries beneath the surface of a blasted rock pile before excavation. A method has been developed and tested to accurately measure the direction and magnitude of subsurface blast movement. This technique uses a cesium vapour gradiometer and a real-time, differentially corrected GPS system to locate pre- and post-blast position of magnetically enhanced target objects placed within blastholes inside a bench. The procedure developed does not require the blasted rock to be disturbed, and the movement information is available within a sufficient time to allow for modification of the selective mining boundaries for each surveyed blast. It was found that the maximum depth of target detection was 18 m, with the overall accuracy being measured as ±1 m (horizontally) and ± 1.2 m (vertically). IntroductionOre dilution is a critical concern for many mining operations. In some instances, it may be the cause of considerable mineral loss. Where the mineralization is finely grained, sedimentary and disseminated in nature, and exhibits no clearly defined visual ore/waste boundary, there is a heightened possibility for ore grade dilution. In most modern open pit gold mines, it is economically desirable to minimize dilution in the production process through the practice of selective mining by defining pre-blast ore digging boundaries, called digging polygons, on the preblast bench area. The polygons’ positions are defined by sampling the production drill holes, with the resultant assay and survey data being used to estimate the areas of specified grade content within the bench. Once the ore is blasted in the bench, the pre-blast locations of these digging polygons are flagged as designated areas on the broken ore pile. The purpose is for the loader operator to be able to recognize which areas of blasted rock are to be sent to the appropriate processing facility or to the waste dump."

Conventional casting at low pouring temperature was employed to produce semisolid metal, SSM, billets of A356 Alloy. The deformation behavior of the as-cast SSM billets was studied using parallel plate compression viscometry. The compression tests were carried out at different applied pressures, and fractions solid. The rheological studies were conducted assuming the SSM slurry behaving like Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids respectively. THE SULLIVAN MINE The Sullivan mine of the Consolidated Mining and ? Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, is situated at Kimberley, B.C., nineteen miles from Cranbrook, a divisional point on the Crowsnest Pass branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. Production started on a small scale in 1900, and in 1914 the mine became the largest lead producer in Canada. In 1925 it was the largest single producer of lead and zinc in the world. Since operations commenced, 4,800,000 tons of ore have been produced from stopes and 170,000 tons from development. At the present time, ore is being mined at the rate of 1,100,000 tons per year, with a yield of about 200,000 lb. lead, 110,000 lb. zinc, and 4,000,000 oz. silver. The town of Kimberley is easily accessible by road as well as by rail. The altitude at Mark creek, a tributary of the St. Mary&apos;s river, is 3,700 feet. To th&apos;e north of the creek, Sullivan hill rises to a height of 6,100 feet, and it is on the southern slope of this hill that the mine is located. Sullivan hill is in the Purcell range, which rises between the Rocky Mountain trench on the east and Kootenay lake on the west. It thus lies within what is commonly referred to as the East Kootenay district.

To those who may not be familiar with the history and organization of the Flin Flon mining property from the rime of its examination and option by the Harry Payne Whitney interests until the present start of operations by the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, this paper may give a better understanding of the property. More technical discussions are being presented to you by the men most closely connected with the various operations of the property. Location The Flin Flon mine is situated along the boundary line between the Provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan at approximately. 54° 45? north latitude, but largely in Manitoba. Prior to the advent of the railway, the property was quite isolated. The summer route was over a course of some 175 miles, consisting of a 125-mile boat trip from The Pas, first up the Saskatchewan river, then across Cumberland and Sturgeon lakes to Sturgeon? Landing. From Sturgeon Landing, a .16-mile portage was necessary to Camp 2 on lake Athapapaskow. From Camp 2 the route consisted of a canoe trip of 32 miles across lake Athapapaskow, up the northwest arm of Schist lake, then up Ross creek to the Company&apos;s docks, and finally a 2-mile walk to the property. The winter route was just under 100 miles in length, the difference being due to the fact that a more direct route could be followed over the frozen lakes. It went up the Saskatchewan river for a short distance above The Pas and then, leaving the river, the road followed Reeder, Rocky, and Sturgeon lakes to Sturgeon Landing, and from there over the same route as the summer one, only across the frozen lakes.
