"Haulage costs, in most operations, represent a large portion of total cost. Quebec Cartier Mining Company came to the conclusion t hat an electric trolley assist providing more horsepower than available from dieselgenerator sets presented the best oppor tunity for improvement. Accordingly, a testing and development program was carried out which resulted in the design, installat ion and application of a practical system. This paper describes the development of the system, the equipment used as well as the actual operation. A projection is also made to indicate further improvement in productivity. A comparison is made of truck operating data before and after activation of the trolley assist system in order to determine its economic impact."

It is the purpose of this paper to present an initial report on the construction and operation of the Fluo-Solid roaster at the property of Campbell Red Lake Mines, Ltd., Balmertown, Ontario. The roaster prepares for subsequent cyanidation the bulk flotation concentrate obtained from four hundred tons per day of gold ore. The mill flow-sheet 'includes jigging and amalgamation; flotation; cyanidation of flotation tailing; and roasting followed by cyanidaition of flotation concentrate plus amalgamation tailing. Overall mill recovery for the year 1950 was 90.2 per cent. Recovery possible by straight cyanidation of this ore would not exceed 80 per cent. The ore contains considerable arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as well as pyrite, with lesser quantities of nickel, zinc, and copper minerals. The mineralization is for the most part extremely fine. The roaster first went into operation on August 7th, 1949, and at the end of 1950 it had roasted 10,916 tons of concentrate. The average recovery of gold from calcine during that period was 94.86 per cent in the primary stage of calcine cyanidation. The average assay of calcine residue from primary cyanidation for the entire period was 0.37 oz. per ton. Both laboratory tests and plant metallurgical balance calculations indicate a further recovery of approximately 10 per cent of this 0.37 oz. when the calcine residue is again cyanided, in the flotation tailing cyanidation circuit.

"Nuclear explosions are currently being planned for use in oil and gas production, the recovery of oil from oil shale, gas storage and copper leaching. The current status of each of these projects is discussed, with emphasis on the economics of each application. The first commercial application of nuclear explosives will be in gas stimulation. Project Gasbuggy will be rapidly followed by two additional shots, also related to gas production. These three events, each in a different formation, will be described in this paper with a discussion on their significance to the world's oil and gas industry. The use of nuclear explosives in oil and gas stimulation should be a standard accepted practice within a few years. Calculations based on explosions in media such as tuff, alluvium, granite and dolomite predict large increases in productivity when nuclear devices are used in tight, thick formations. The broken-up rock resulting from the explosion becomes the new well bore, with a production rate of six to twelve times that of a normally completed well.Also included in the paper is a discussion of the real or possible problems associated with nuclear explosive engineering. The only major foreseeable problem is the seismic shock wave. This limits the size of explosive which can be used near important surface structures. A discussion is included on the radiation problem, which we believe to be largely psychological in the case of contained explosions."

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. Operations downstream of mining and beneficiation are still being subjected to increasing scrutiny as highly capitalized projects have been either slow to achieve their targets or have actually failed to do so. Leaching and smelting projects have fundamentally high calls on capital and technology as reaction rates are increased and the capture and disposal of unwanted products are subjected to greater restrictions. Separating value from waste inherently becomes riskier as the purification of the desired product imposes greater demands on the process to produce benign wastes. When we superimpose on the chemistry of the project severe predictions of throughput rates, that bring in facets of manufacturing, we are introducing complexities that the records show are not handled well. This paper discusses some of the more common challenges that operators face and what methods are available and are likely to be successful in preventing the loss of value as projects are brought on-stream. This thinking needs to start much earlier and at greater intensity than our industry has normally chosen to employ.

"Most of the minerals employed in Canadian refractory production are imported; in fact, most of the refractories consumed in Canada are imported. Whereas this situation is partly due to a definite shortage of suitable raw materials, e.g., fire clays, it is possible that the potential of certain mineral deposits which could be usefully exploited has not been recognized. There are exceptions, notably magnesite and dolomite, from which refractories are produced in Canada.In many cases, known mineral deposits are located either in inaccessible areas or in areas where transportation would be a major economic factor. This paper lists some minerals and their respective known deposits which could be employed in the production of refractories, irrespective of economics."

"LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."

The particular purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the development of underground conveying as applied to methods of working coal in the mines of Alberta. Historical A retrospective view of coal mining discloses a continuous effort, on the part of those interested, to substitute mechanical contrivances for hand labour. A patent for a coal-cutting machine was granted to Michael Menzies in 1761, at which time much of the transportation of coal underground was accomplished by means of sledges. Early forms of cutting machines attempted to duplicate the action of a miner's pick, and one hundred years lacer than Menzies? patent we still find this class of machine, driven by water power or compressed air, in use to a limited extent. A coal-cutter using the principle of a circular saw and worked by hand was exhibited in London in 1851, and from these crude beginnings the machines of today have been evolved. Transportation of coal underground has similarly been subject to considerable improvement. The above mentioned Michael Menzies took out a patent in 1750 covering the use of a self-acting incline plane, which is probably the earliest record of any system devised to lighten the load of the crammer or car-pusher of those days. In the year 1868 the Gillot & Copley machine was patented, this being a compressed-air-driven disc coal-cutter which proved highly successful. The chain cutters were a natural development from this type, and for a number of reasons they have been even more successful in the majority of cases.

The solutions to unsteady-state gas flow in a radial system have been reviewed in order to aid in the interpretation of drawdown data. It has been the practice to evaluate the time and rate conversion constants, directly or indirectly, by using reservoir data. This paper presents a method of determining these constants from drawdown data. A simplified approach to the de-termination for the various boundary conditions is presented. An example of a problem which illustrates the use of this theory appears in the appendix. "There is concern that hydraulic fracturing (HF) near an existing critically stressed fault could trigger slip and generate a seismic event of significance. To this end, a mathematical discontinuum model representing a naturally fractured rock (NFR) mass containing a fault is created, and fault slip response to fluid injection is studied. UDECTM is used as a Discrete Element Method (DEM) approach to define the seismic moment, and also to assess the influence of injection and slip on further shear slip propagation. In most of the simulations, slip and dilation take place along a number of oriented fracture surfaces, so it is reasonable to assume that in a real case, microseimic emissions would accompany each slip “event”. The moment magnitude scale (Mw) is used to measure the size of the microseismic event in terms of the energy released. Seismic moment is a measure of the total energy (work) released during a seismic event and is used to measure its size. From another aspect, the injection energy is calculated as the total energy required for achieving the hydraulic fracturing; this is viewed as energy to open fractures against the ambient stress field and much of it is potential stored energy that can be released and create discontinuities (work of fracture), deformations (W=F·d), heat and radiated seismic energy. A small amount of the total released energy is transformed to radiated seismic energy and another small amount results in tensile fractures. Fracture energy is used to calculate the work required to create fracture surfaces. Comparing the energy release by fracturing or seismic events indicates their contribution to the total amount of released energy or total work. The amount of energy associated with the stick-slip event is small compared with the overall work done to generate the distortions (i.e. increases in aperture by forcing them open) in the rock mass, and much of the energy in slip is lost as heat from the plastic deformation, rather than as radiated seismic energy.Microseismic monitoring shows the spatial distribution and magnitude of seismicity associated with slip of bedding planes and natural and incipient fractures. Work calculations have been undertaken to look at the various sources of energy storage (elastic strain energy) or dissipation (slip), and likely the energy losses from viscous dissipation could be addressed as well, helping to clarify HF processes in NFRs."

Introduction By far the largest part of the money raised for mining is raised by honest and legitimate means; but a not inconsiderable amount is raised by fraudulent sales methods. It will be conceded without argument that the greatest menace to the mining business is the fraudulent promoter. The sale of worthless mining stocks to the public by high-pressure. salesmen, house to house canvassers, telephone campaigns, fraudulent use of the mails, fraudulent statements, and reloading, has seriously prejudiced the public against even legitimate mining. A very small percentage of the funds raised by such fraudulent means is ever spent on the property, but instead is absorbed by the promoter in illegitimate' profits, enormous commissions, high office rents, and other expenditures, and is just so much subtracted from the fund which the legitimate developer needs to bring new mines to the point of production. The mining fraternity has been at fault in that, while they recognized this situation, they made no adequate attempt to rectify it. They knew that these fraudulent practises were conducted by parasites who attached themselves to the mining business in boom times and claimed to be part and parcel of it, but who were merely professional salesmen and promoters who, when there was not a mining boom, were selling sky-line real-estate, worthless oil stocks, or fraudulent securities which happened to be popular with the public. While mining people had this distinction well in mind, the public did not differentiate between the crooked promoter temporarily selling fraudulent mining stock and the honest promoter who made mining finance his life work; and we did little to make this distinction clear to the public or to sweep these money grabbers out of our house. The historic boom of 1927-8 and '29 brought with it the usual crop of crooked mining promoters, and the scandals resulting from their operations forced the Governments into the enactment of laws to attempt to protect the gullible public against the operations of these meanest of thieves and to appease public clamour.

This paper briefly describes some of the phenomena encountered when materials are submitted to extremely high pressures, such as those produced by the detonation of an explosive charge placed in contact with the material. It was found that extensive changes take place in the? microstructure of iron and steel. Diffusion-controlled processes, such as the transformation of lamellar pearlite, the recrystallization and grain growth of ferrite, and the homogenization of the pearlite-ferrite structure, can take place within micro-or milliseconds. Mechanical twins can propagate without deviation from ferrite to pearlite, thus indicating a proeutectoid ferrite-pearlite-ferrite orientation relationship. The propagation and interaction of intense stress waves in materials was demonstrated with the use of Armco iron. "The Lower Jurassic Iron Mask batholith intrudes Upper Triassic Nicola Group volcanic rocks in the Quesnellia terrane of southcentral British Columbia and hosts Cu-Au mineralization. The batholith comprises three mappable intrusive phases, including: Pothook gabbro to diorite, Cherry Creek monzodiorite to monzonite and Sugarloaf diorite. The Iron Mask hybrid forms a fourth mappable unit that makes up to 45% of the areal exposure in the batholith. It is highly variable in texture and composition and subdivided into three types; Type I and II have abundant (partially digested) xenoliths, many of which are derived from the Nicola Group, whereas Type III is xenolith-poor and shows extreme outcrop-scale textural diversity.Pothook and Cherry Creek rocks are similar in texture, mineralogy, whole rock and mineral composition and style of alteration. Contacts between the two can be intrusive or gradational. Rocks collected from these two suites have compositions that are permissive of a single magma batch, although simple crystal fractionation does not explain all chemical variations within and between the two suites. The Sugarloaf unit comprises a diverse group of amphibole-phyric rock types and is texturally and mineralogically distinct from Pothook and Cherry Creek suites.The Iron Mask hybrid represents progressive stages of physical and chemical interaction between Nicola Group country rocks and Pothook magma. Magmatic assimilation (selective or partial) is supparted on the basis of field relationships, petrographic observations, and REB compositional data. Thermal dehydration and partial assimilation of Nicola Group rocks by Pothook magma is shown to be a valid means of promoting early and extensive volatile saturation in the Iron Mask batholith."

"In contrast with the well-publicized Pittsburgh coal, and the Everglades of Florida, most coal-forming swamps of Cretaceous time in western North America occupied relatively limited areas. They formed in areas of irregular subsidence, bounded by the changing levee systems of meandering streams. Coke quality is determined by the physical and chemical behaviour of the vitrain during thermal decomposition. Vitrain is at least in part a colloidal substance, originally containing large proportions of water; its formation and survival depend on maintaining a shallow cover of stagnant water up to the time of burial. Heat from swamp fires or subaerial dyhydration could destroy it or impair its quality. Observed patterns suggest that the metamorphism is almost entirely thermal, and that there is little relation to tectonic stresses, or loading. These coals had probably achieved essentially their present rank prior to deformation. Evidence of frictional heating along the thrust planes is minimal or absent. Normally, coal beds are aquifers. Oxygen carried into the subsurface becomes available and reacts with the vitrain to destroy its natural thermoplastic properties. The tolerance of oxygen without loss of thermoplasticity is inversely related to the volatile content. Significant lateral variations of coal thickness are common and sometimes occur in short distances. In deformed areas these thickness changes are more commonly due to differential tectonic stress rather than to original thicknesses of coal. Locally, coal is known to have flowed into cavities, or fractures. These principals are discussed in relation to coal deposits of western Alberta and eastern British Columbia."

We believe that it will remain so as long as there are economic cycles.The fortunes of the industry are tied to those sectors of the economy where decisions can be postponed until more favourable times: automobiles, housing, appliances, inventory building and capital spending. Over the past two years, while U.S. GNP fell by 3.8%, automobile production declined by 31 %, from 9.7 million units in 1973 to 6.7 million in 1975. Housing starts plummeted some 43% from 2.1 million units in 1973 to 1.2 million in 1975. Little wonder that U.S. copper consumption fell by 37% and zinc consumption by 38% over the same period.With the rest of the world's economies moving in unison with that of the United States, it is also not surprising that times have been tough for mining.Arthur Burns, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, contends that each recession sows the seeds of its own recovery. The worse the recession, the better the subsequent recovery. If this is true, then the lot of the mining industry should improve significantly over the next two to three years."

"I.-IntroductionAn attempt bas been made in this paper to provide a basis for appraisal of the future of the coal briquetting industry in Alberta by outlining the processes used for briquetting various ranks of coal, by specifying the requirements of a briquetted fuel, by indicating .the status of the industry in the United States, by giving developments in Western Canada, by assessing costs of processing, and by discussing briquetting researches in progress. Much of .the detail bas been omitted since this might mask, rather than reveal, the more important phases of the problem. Reference will be made when possible to published articles where many of the details can be obtained.It should be stated at the outset that, in the writer’s opinion, there are three possible developments in Alberta as regards briquetting: (a) an expansion of the briquetting of the fines of • non-coking and coking coals of semi-anthracite, and of low and medium volatile bituminous rank; (b) the processing of the fines of high-volatile C bituminous coals; and (c) the upgrading of the lower rank high-moisture sub-bituminous coals. Details of the chemical and physical properties of these coals can be obtained in publications of the Research Council of Alberta (1, 2), and of the Fuel Research Station, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa (3).Semi-anthracite and low and medium volatile bituminons coals occur in the mountain areas of Alberta, where, during the upthrust of the Rocky mountains, the coal beds served as the sliding surface. This resulted in the coals being; crushed and consequently they contain a h1gh percentage of fines. In some cases they are high in mineral matter and require to be cleaned before being processed. However, the cleaning of fine coal is both difficult and costly. Both the amount of fines present in the mine-run coal and the amount of mineral matter associated with the coal have increased through the introduction of mechanized mining and through the recovery of coal by stripping operations."

Abstract-Gahnite, a zinc-bearing spinel, is a resistate mineral that may be used as an indicator mineral of polymetallic deposits in high-grade metamorphic terrain. The Ontario Geological Survey recently completed surficial mapping and sampling programs in the Separation Lake area of northwestern Ontario and Kinniwabi Lake area of northeastern Ontario in which gahnite was recovered from samples of surficial sediments. Ternary plots of the composition (ZnO, MgO, FeO[t]) of gahnite recovered from these surficial studies reveal three distinct groups: Group 1 is characterized by low (< 1 wt%) MgO values; Group 2 by higher (>1 wt%) MgO values; and Group 3 by higher FeO(t) values than Groups 1 and 2. The composition of in situ gahnite recovered from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization, Zn-rich Sedex-type mineralization and peraluminous rare-element mineralized granite and pegmatite also was determined. The composition of the gahnite obtained from surficial samples was compared with that of in situ material. Gahnite from the peraluminous rareelement granite and pegmatite overlapped very well with surficial gahnite of Group 1. Gahnite from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization and Sedex-type mineralization overlapped well with surficial gahnite of Group 2. These results suggest that determination of gahnite composition in indicator mineral surveys may be useful in exploration programs when assessing the mineral potential of a region.

ABSTRACT An overall study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of consolidation for oil sands fine tailings produced using different extraction processes. As part of the overall study, a comprehensive description of physical and chemical characteristics of fine tailings generated by caustic and non-caustic processes was carried out. Ultimately, the influence of these fundamental properties on the compressibility, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength properties of the fine tailings was assessed. The characteristics of the fine tailings are presented in terms of index properties, mineralogy, specific surface area, water chemistry, liquid limits, particle size distribution and structure. A difference in water chemistry was concluded to be the cause of substantial differences in particle size distributions and degree of dispersion of the comparable caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The degree of dispersion was consistent with predictions for dispersed clays established by the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values for these materials. A linear variation of increasing dispersion with increasing SAR up to a SAR value of about 40 has been suggested, above which fine tailings are completely dispersed. The observed dispersed or flocculated structures (viewed using a scanning electron microscope) supported the predictions based on SAR values.

Pig iron and silicospiegeleisen were produced experimentally from a very low-grade manganiferous iron ore from Steep Rock, Ontario, by a two-stage electric smelting process. The most favourruble operating conditions were determined for each stage. Cement clinker then was made by calcining the slag from the second stage of smelting, with additional limestone and alumina. (This slag would normally be a waste material). The cement clinker produced had the composition of commercial Portland cement, and met the physical test requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Specification A5-1951 for normal Portland cement as well as could be expected for a material produced on .such a small scale.
