The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

The factors influencing mobile equipment fleet cost and performance commence at the time of mine planning and continue to exert an influence over the life of the mine. These factors must be understood at the early stages of any operationÆs planning process as they continue to impact both positively and negatively on fleet performance and operating cost throughout the life of the mine. The key factors examined in this paper include: grades; rolling resistance; fragmentation and truck loading.

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

The Corridor ore body is so named because it occurs in an east-west zone or corridor of schist bounded on the north by the siliceous conglomerates of Mount Lyell, and on the south by similar conglomerates of the Tharsis ridge (Fig. 1). It was discovered after the geophysical prospecting methods described below had defined a target zone for diamond drilling.Since the proving of copper mineralisation by drilling, the corridor orebody has served the vital function of a convenient known target body for the orientation of more recently developed geophysical methods. Traversing of the orebody by these new methods has provided experience for the evaluation of anomalies elsewhere.Some of the methods applied had not been used in Australia before, and were introduced to the west coast of Tasmania through the undertaking there of modern regional exploration programmes. The authors feel that the information gained could be of assistance to others engaged in geophysical prospecting.HISTORY OF DISCOVERYProspecting in the Mount Lyell district has been more or less continuous since 1881. The first geological report was published by Thureau (1886).In 1934, Blazey and Douglas (1934-38) commenced geophysical surveys at Mt. Gold mining in Australia and globally has a long and variable history. In recent years, due to ongoing public concern over long-term environmental impacts, the mining industry globally has been moving towards a more sustainable framework, presented as the æMining, Minerals and Sustainable DevelopmentÆ (MMSD) framework at the Johannesburg Earth Summit in 2002. There are a number of fundamental issues and concerns with assessing the sustainability of mining. Firstly, long-term trends show that ore grades for almost all metals and minerals will continue to decline (some rapidly so), increasing waste rock is being produced due to the trend towards large-scale open cut mining and more complex ores are now commonly being developed. The impact of these trends on the resource intensity, or unit cost, of gold production is of major concern as it could lead to an increase in energy, water and reagent consumption and greenhouse emissions per unit gold produced. A detailed compilation of these fundamental sustainability indices for gold mining has been undertaken, and is presented with respect to indices over time, ore grade and ore throughput. A clear observation is that the resource intensity of gold mining is extremely sensitive to the ore grade, with energy, water and cyanide consumption and greenhouse emissions rising significantly as ore grade decreases. Based on the gold ore resources at operating mines and other known gold deposits, it is most likely that the average gold ore grade will continue to decline, leading to increased resource intensity and consequent environmental impacts (assuming no breakthrough new technologies occur). These findings are of major importance to understanding the sustainability of gold mining. The final judgement of the sustainability of gold mining therefore must take into account the sensitivity of the ore grade in the resource intensity of gold production.

The coalmining industry in most countries has, at various times, suddenly been confronted with a decrease in demand for coal. Readjustments made to reduce productive capacity to match the reduced demand for coal have often resulted in hardship to mineworkers, loss of capital investment to mineowners and loss of coal reserves. The consequences of the methods of readjustment adopted in the past have contributed to the low esteem in which coalmining has come to be regarded by a large section of the gel).eral public in many countries.Four sections of the coalmining industry, representing different periods of time, different countries, and different methods of industrial organisation have been examined:Great Britain and the U.S.A. during the inter war years, the post war European Coal and Steel Community, and post war Great Britain under the National Coal Board. An assessment has been made of the methods adopted in each case to reduce productive capacity to match a reduced demand for coal. Finally the fundamentals of the problem-as it affects the coalmining industry of any country-are considered, and possible solutions put forward.During the 1950's, surplus productive capacity was a problem in many coalmining countries, including Australia and New Zealand. As a rule no techniques are developed beforehand to solve problems introduced by a sudden decrease in demand for coal. The situation is usually tackled by a series of short term decisions based on expediency, which often in the long run only aggravate the problem.

Cement production in Australia approximates 6.5 million tonnes per year. Cement clinker is sourced from 15 plants which operate 28 kilns. Cement grinding is conducted at 14 of the clinker plants plus 7 grinding plants. Average annual capacity per kiln or plant is lower than in many overseas countries, but kilns introduced since 1970's have been of larger size more in keeping with size trends overseas, although still smaller than the large units overseas. Substantial economies in capital and labour costs can be achieved in large production units, particularly with dry process kilns using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. Precalcination techniques have been introduced to the Australian cement industry but as cement transport costs form a major part of supplying diverse market areas, the size of kilns is likely to remain less than maximum owing to balance with distribution costs. The cement industry uses significant amounts of thermal and electrical energy which can be minimised by proper selection of equipment and technology. Labour costs are also significant and can be contained by automation and computer control of the process.

In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

The State of New South Wales is highly favoured in having vast deposits of coal adjacent to and within easy reach of the coastal Ports. Not only is the quality of the fuel generally superior to any found in the other States, but it is greater in extent than in any other part of the Continent. For interesting and reliable details of the history of the discovery of coal, the geology of the coal bearing strata, analysis of the various coals and other valuable data, the readers are referred to the book recently issued by the New South Wales Government, entitled The Mineral Resources of New South Wales, by Edward F. Pittman, A.R.S.M., etc., by the direction of the Hon. T. L. Fegan, Minister for Mines. The mining community is indebted to the Minister for having had published the most valuable condensed record of the mineral resources of the State extant.For the purposes of this paper we will only give such a general description of the coal fields as will make it intelligible in connection with the subject of the coal mining in the State of New South Wales.

A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of copper cementation with zinc in sulphate solution. For copper concentrations of the order of 10 p.p.m., a porous, adherent deposit is formed on the zinc surface and this has a significant influence on the reaction rate. When the specific mass of deposit is less than about O· 35 mg/cm2 the surface may be considered as smooth and the rate is described by simple convective counter diffusion of zinc and copper ions through a laminar diffusion boundary layer to the deposit-solution interface. In the presence of additional deposit, the diffusional mass transfer rate is increased by increased surface roughness.The rate under these conditions is first order, with the degree of enhancement independent of further increases in the specific deposit mass. The enhancement in rateis, however, directly related to the initial mass flux and the species involved in the reaction.Preliminary work showed the same mechanism to apply to cementation from chloride solution, solutions of high zinc concentration, and cementation of copper with iron..

This paper describes the behaviour, under creep conditions, of a cast lead creep specimen consisting of five crystals, the boundaries of these crystals being substantially at right angles to the direction' of tension, i.e., across the long axis of the specimen. This particular specimen was obtained in an attempt to produce a single crystal in the manner described in the appendix of a previous paper (1).Thus, the specimen was of the same shape and size, was composed of the same purity lead and received the same preliminary treatment as the single crystal test-pieces.The object of the experiment was mainly to observe the effect of the crystal boundaries on both the deformation of the test piece and the process of recrystallisation and to compare the creep rate of the test-piece with that of a specimen consisting of one crystal only.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe specimen had an effective test length of 10 cms. and a cross $ection of 0·5 in. x 0·25 in. The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit occurs in pervasively altered andesite of the Waipupu Formation and in the Waiharakeke Dacite. The unaltered, post-mineral Whakamoehau Andesite overlies these units. The Empire zone of the Golden Cross deposit contains a stockwork which is currently mined by open pit methods, and a series of veins that are mined underground. Alteration envelops both the underground and open pit mineralisation. The core of the alteration zone contains silicification, as quartz veins, and adularia. Shallow portions of the system contain illite-smectite and a thermally unstable chlorite, tentatively identified as corrensite, which pass downward into illite and chlorite, respectively. Replacement calcite occurs widely throughout the altered zone; pyrite is nearly ubiquitous. This alteration assemblage indicates formation from near-neutral alkali chloride waters. A late, post-mineralisation alteration assemblage of calcite, smectite, illitesmectite, kaolinite and siderite presumably formed from weakly acidic, steam-heated CO2-rich waters.   We have identified eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren.

THE Talisman mine is situated on the Waitawheta (pronounced Wytaffetta) river just above its junction with the Chinemuri (pronounced Chinnemurre) river near Karangahake, NZ. The explored reef-bearing portion of the claim includes the angleformed by the junction of the rivers and extends southwards for slightly over a mile (See Plate V.). The country is mountainous both rivers flowing through precipitous gorges.The trig. station on Karangahake mountain is almost directly above the workings on the Bonanza section and is 1680 ft. above river level, the adit from the gorge giving 1200 ft. of backs measured vertically. The officers of the N.Z. Geological Survey are engaged in a detailed survey of the Waihi district and the rocks of Karangahake are under examination. The rocks of the district are andesites and dacites much altered and silicified. The seams of black coal occurring in Victoria are so disturbed by faulting, wash-outs, thinning, etc., that it is necessary, for the prevention of costly errors in development, that close boring be undertaken so that the correct positions of the shafts, tunnels, main and auxiliary roadways can be set out in order that the area can be economically worked. The State Coal Mine has two boring plants continuously at work, which have given good service for the last twenty-five years.The information supplied herein is merely our experience in boring at the State Coal Mine over an extended period. The type of plant in use is that known as the Victoria Drilling Plant, equipped with an 11 h.p. portable oil engine, using power kerosene as fuel. It was purchased in 1914, complete with mechanism for cable drilling, capable of boring to a depth of 1500 ft. with a guarantee of 1000 ft., with Calyx cutters, boring rods and all necessary equipment for the sum of £1473. The chief mechanical features of the plant are as follows:-The derrick is in the shape of a tripod (see Fig. 1), two of the legs being of steel channel built together to form a frame which, when lowered on to two sets of road wheels, forms a carriage for the transport of a portion of the boring equipment. The third leg is made of oregon in the form of a double bow, with bolts and distance pieces between the wooden sides. The top of this is hinged on to the steel frame, and the bottom is fitted into a cast iron block, having two small wheels to facilitate erection. The presence of gold or tin in a particular place in payable quantities may be suspected from geological and prospE;cting reports. It behoves the engineer by judiciously spaced boreholes or pits to establish whether the place is exploitable with profit, and it is the purpose of this paper to set out the ways in which this is done. The various types of deposit to be considered occur in Malaya, Thafland and Borneo, in which countries the writer spent four years in estimating alluvials.The methods described were used in actual practice both by the writer and previous engineers for the same company. The subsequent exploitation of the alluvials evaluated by the methods given below shows that the recovery was as good as, and sometimes higher than, expected. No claims are made to the originality of the methods, but it is 'felt that they may be new to some engineers and< interesting to others contemplating alluvial testing.

Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.
