The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

Ok Tedi mine has become one of the major copper producers in the world. In the process of becoming of age, it overcame the challenges of operating in a locality which is young in geological terms, experiences very high rainfall and has a topography which gives rise to frequent landslides. This paper discusses some of the geological, mine and geotechnical engin- eering aspects of the Mt Fubilan ore deposit.

A study was made of zircon powders bonded with phosphoric acid or aluminium orthophosphate. The influence of strength of solution of the phosphatic binders on the modulus of rupture over a temperature range was investigated. Physical properties of three grades of zircon powder bonded with phosphatic binders were studied at various temperatures. Examination of x-ray diffraction data indicated that phosphates ofzirconia are preferentially formed to phosphates of silica. However, zircon in the presence of excess phosphoric acid also forms phosphates of silica upon heating.Resistance to attack by slags from blast and open hearth furnaces was determined on phosphate-bonded zircon mortars in a cup test with industrially made ladle bricks. Zircon powders bonded with phosphates proved to have high P.C.E. values. The first satisfactory results of a plant trial with phosphate-bonded zircon mortar, used in a steel ladle, are now being assessed in larger scale industrial tests prior to accepting the mortar as a steel plant refractory.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route.The Australian Atomic Energy Commission is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and· calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site.

Many mining operations are uncertain of what costs they should be achieving. The majority of cost estimates are based on historical costs that have added contingency factors. Historical costs are a valuable source of information but a more precise costing method is necessary. There are several alternative methods for predicting costs. A methodology which provides the best indication of the achievable costs is one using a standard inventory list and a bill of quantities. The model is termed a Basic Principles model and addresses basic design principles and engineering constraints.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic.This hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so; it is concluded that there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field.However, the stratigraphic interval between the postulated source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (Pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

This paper discusses the prediction of subsidence over partial extraction systems in thick coal seams. A model based on empirical techniques using influence functions is developed to calculate the surface ground settlements above extraction panels. Independent of the influence function, two field parameters, the subsidence factor and the angle of draw (limit angle) are required to define the model. Both these parameters are best observed from critical or super critical subsidence areas. However in thick seams, extraction widths are typically sub critical and therefore it was necessary to refine an estimation process for sub critical conditions. Partial extraction systems in NZ are characterised by variability with respect to extraction thickness and depth. As extraction proceeds along a panel, conditions deteriorate once the critical span width is exceeded and therefore percentage extraction decreases. A further variable was introduced to the modelling which allows for varying extraction sequences. Two comparisons with field observations, one over a partial extraction panel, the other over abandoned workings, showed the method gave good agreement to measured subsidence values.

Forecasting, particularly when applied to meaningful issues, is known irreverently as 'futurology'. There is quite a range of opinion ext.ant in the world when mineral resources are looked at. The opinions range from the doomsday view that there will be acute shortages of all essential commodities, to the optimistic outlook that new 'discoveries will prevent any possibility of shortages. The environment is, as yet, only studied locally and quite parochially; surprisingly there is little integration when considering the spatial atmosphere, the seas in depth and the earth's crust.

Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, a wholly owned Government of India Enterprise, was established in the year 1976 to develop mine and plant facilities to produce 7.5 Mtpa of high-grade iron ore concentrate at Kudremukh. The mine and plant facilities were commissioned in 1980. In view of high demand for iron oxide pellets in iron and steel industry worldwide and as a diversification activity, a pelletisation plant of 3.0 Mtpa capacity was commissioned in the year 1987 at Mangalore for production of high-quality blast furnace and direct reduction grade pellets for export. The pellet plant capacity has been increased to 3.5 Mtpa by technological improvement which included installation of roll press for quality and productivity improvement. In addition, the pellet capacity is being increased to 4 Mtpa by the addition of Shaft Pelletising Furnace plant.

Before presenting this address I desire to express my appreciation of the honour which has been conferred on me by my election as iPresident of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. At this stage it might not be out of place to recall that Broken Hill was the birthplace of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, originally formed as the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers in 1893.In selecting for my address the topic of "The Broken Hill Mining Industry and its Contribution to the Economy of Australia" I realise it is impossible to cover fully every aspect of the nation's economy which owes all or part of its origin to the Broken Hill field. Nevertheless, I feel that some attempt should be made to give credit to the Broken Hill mining industry for its part in the progress which Australia has made over the past seventy years.. If we care to reflect for a moment it soon becomes apparent that, not only is the Broken Hill mining industry an important producer of base metals for domestic and overseas consumption, but its profits have provided the means whereby many of Australia's leading secondary industries have been established or built up. Examples which come to mind are the founding of the iron and steel industry by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company; the establishment of plants at Port Pirie in South Australia, and at Risdon in Tasmania, for the production of metallic lead and zinc; and also at Port Kembla for the smelting of copper ores. OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

Gold and Silver bearing epithermal veins of the Golden Cross deposit are hosted in Miocene and Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanics occurring 8 km northwest of Waihi at the southern extent of the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Veining occurred during a period of hydrothermal activity that began early to late Pliocene, and possibly continued into the Pleistocene.   Field relations and petrographic relationships reveal that multiple generations of FeS2 occur in the Golden Cross region, with FeS2 occurring in all nine rock types recognised at Golden Cross. The variability of FeS2 morphology was investigated by preparation of high purity FeS2 separates, and grain counting. Marcasite is the dominant FeS2 phase at Golden Cross, and along with pyrite is shown to have a systematic habit variation. Pyrite shows a sequence from cubes through octahedra to pyritohedra to dendritic growth. This pyrite sequence conforms to an experimentally determined sequence. The parallel sequence for marcasite at Golden Cross is from tabular through bladed aggregates to euhedral miscellaneous marcasite morphologies. The FeS2 sequences observed are believed to be due to increasing temperature, and perhaps also increasing FeS2-oversaturation and fluid flow.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted part of mineral-prospective eastern Australia. Geologically credible comparisons between selected trans-Tasman and SW Pacific geological provinces and units, especially those that contain significant mineralisation in Australia, can help provide a useful exploration framework for New Zealand. As part of a six-year Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ (MWE) research programme, we have targeted selected geological units in eastern Australia for comparison and contrast with their potential New Zealand counterparts. In future years, the programme will focus on geological units in New Caledonia.

The paper describes the search for mineral deposits in an area of 4,500 sq. miles of south-west Tasmania. The area is one of difficult access and the problem of speedy movement and maintenance of field parties was solved by the use of helicopters. The programme has followed a systematic pattern of the aerial photography of the exploration area with the preparation of photQmosaics and topographical base sheets from these mosaics. Geological maps were initially prepared by photogeological interpretation and making use where possible of pre-existing information. The maps produced were later checked by ground traverses. Geophysical maps were obtained by the use of airborne magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric methods. Geophysical and geological anomalies were checked on the ground by a campaign using ground geophysical equipment in the former case and geological and geochemical work in both instances. Audio Frequency Magnetic and Induced Polarization techniques were used in an area which was covered by several hundred feet of Tertiary sediments.The campaign has reached the stage of the drilling of specific targets.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the activities of Lyell-E.Z. Explorations (L.E.E.), an organization which was formed in 1956 by the Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Co. Ltd. and the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. to explore for mineral deposits in an area of approximately 4,500 sq. miles in southwest and southern Tasmania. To provide the necessary personnel and equipment for this project the exploration resources of both Companies were pooled and augmented and a headquarters was established in Queenstown. The work was directed by a Committee of four made up of officials from both Companies; a review of this structure has recently been presented by Hall (1959).

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Australians have made some notable innovations and discoveries both in mining techniques and in the processing of ores. Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.
