Sampling procedures are an important aspect of geophysical exploration survey design. It is good practice that the selection of survey parameters ensures that the signal to noise ratio is optimised, while minimising survey cost.Sampling considerations for any geophysical method include the size of the target, scale of observation, aliasing associated with station and line spacing, nature and extent of overburden, and the presentation of data.As a guide to survey design, the specifics are discussed for three geophysical techniques in common use in mineral exploration; these include the magnetic method, transient electromagnetics and induced polarisation.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are seven major deposits; Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the subdistrict are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Bamck Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post, and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont Property.

Separation of leach residue suspended solids from pregnant liquor solution is an important step in hydrometallurgy flowsheets. Alternative flowsheet options are counter-current decantation (CCD) thickeners or counter current washing (CCW) horizontal belt vacuum filters. Extensive sedimentation and vacuum filtration simulations have been completed by FLSmidth on leach discharge slurries to indentify equipment capacity and performance. These data were used to compare Capex and Opex for CCD versus CCW alternatives. In addition, Capex and Opex for large horizontal belt vacuum filters with filtration areas greater than 250m2 are compared to current state of the art sizes of 150m2. This paper presents this information and discusses various advantages and disadvantages.

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) operates the Cayeli underground copper mine in Turkey. In response to a lost time incident (LTI) that occurred at the mine in 2022, the mine management decided to introduce a new safety approach on-site. The initiative began with a comprehensive safety culture analysis conducted by Arti Consulting, involving focus group studies. Employees actively participated in candid discussions, sharing their insights on safety issues and offering solutions. These conversations were meticulously audio recorded, resulting in over 150 000 words collected from more than 100 employees. These transcribed narratives then underwent rigorous semantic analysis, with the assistance of a sociologist, to identify and dissect patterns of unsafe behaviour. This analysis found areas for improvement, particularly in near-miss and incident reporting, quality of safety toolbox talks and effectiveness of pre-work risk assessments. Subsequently, mine management deliberated on these insights and devised corrective actions. An emphasis was placed on involving all employees in the corrective actions through communication training, empowering them to own the decisions and changes made. These impactful measures were seamlessly integrated into FQM’s Think! Safety Program, which embodies FQM’s sensible health and safety strategy. FQM partnered with Strika Entertainment (Strika) to develop innovative visual-first safety communication tools that use illustration, animation and graphic design to simplify complex messaging into easy-to-understand edutainment. As part of this approach to safety communications, Cayeli and Strika revamped the safety toolbox talks to encourage employees to voice their concerns and receive feedback when their suggestions were implemented. The response from employees has been positive, with over 200 unsafe behaviours and conditions reported within the initial two months of launching the Think! Safety Program. Remarkably, the Cayeli Mine has not experienced any LTIs for the past 500 days as of 9 December 2023. This paper encapsulates the dedicated efforts to transform Cayeli into a safer mining operation.

The Olympic Dam Mining Operation involves the supply of some 2.2 million tonnes per annum of ore feed for the metallurgical plant. To achieve this approximately 9 km of tunnels are developed per year to gain access to the long hole open stopes that supply the majority of the production tonnes.Vast amounts of data are produced in the mining activity from the geology, mine design, scheduling, surveying, shift reporting through to the statistical reporting and analysis of the performance of the mine activities. Care must be taken when obtaining the data to maximise the usefulness of the data to other users so not to impose constraints or additional processes on future users.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. The Ernest Henry Mine is currently a copper-gold open pit operation situated in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current throughput of 11 million tonnes per annum; however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in late 2011. The deposit dips at approximately 45¦ and extends for at least another 400 vertical metres below the final 530 m deep pit design. Resource drilling from 2002 until mid 2008 has enabled an Indicated Mineral Resource to be established to 1000 m below surface. Scoping and prefeasibility studies (PFS) have been completed toward determining if this resource is suitable for underground mining and a feasibility study is currently progressing with a sublevel caving (SLC) concept. This paper briefly describes the process by which the SLC method was selected, conclusions regarding the non-selected methods, and then discusses the optimisation process used to derive the mining plan. The key optimisation parameters include the production drive spacing, level spacing, draw strategy, cut-off grade and production rate. Key risks will then be assessed and economic sensitivities studied. Final sensitivities will use Monte Carlo simulations to improve the transparency of the projectÆs risk profile. The feasibility study (FS) began in March 2008 and this paper describes the main optimisation steps at the time of writing and outlines the plan for study completion through to March 2009.

The northern margin of the Arunta Block is characterized by a metasedimentary and volcanic sequence of lower metamorphic grade than that of the central Arunta Block. Whereas the Harts Ranges have granulite to amphibolite metamor- phic grades, the northern margin only reached greenschist to lower amphibolite facies. Most of the high grade area of the central Arunta Block appears to be unprospective, but the lower grade marginal fringe contains most mineral pros- pects to name a few: Barrow Creek, Molyhill and the Jervois Mine. Numerous smaller prospects occur in this marginal zone. Four major lithostratigraphic units can be recognized in the Jervois Mine area: 1. Gneissic Suite consisting of granitic and rhyolitic gneisses which are characterized by a distinct intersection lineation. 2. Metasedimentary Suite of cordierite- biotite schists and chlorite-biotite schists. 3. Mine Sequence, consisting of spotted schists with andalusite and cordierite, quartz- sericite-feldspar schists with distinct rhyo- litic remnants and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists which contain the lode horizons:

"An effective geotechnical design provides an accurate and appropriate assessment, balanced with a mining company’s risk profile. Justifying the cost of slope assessment requires an understanding of the input sensitivities, and resultant risk, to achieve a slope of a required functionality. As a project progresses from Scoping to Feasibility, the geotechnical risk becomes better resolved through increased expenditure on drilling, testing, analysis and modelling as long as the input data is appropriately spatially distributed. Providing accurate and appropriate geotechnical assessments in the early stages provides confidence in all following stages, especially where initial analysis indicates difficult geotechnical conditions. It is also in the early stages of project definition that there is most opportunity to maximise the value of the deposit through investigations into optimal mining methods.This paper examines the advantages of geotechnical engineering input through a project study period. Early geotechnical involvement allows the Scoping and Pre-Feasibility Studies to be more effective. Operational risks can then be better understood and dealt within the Feasibility Study phase, also ensuring that the correct risks and management controls are put in place.With commodity price pressure and cost of resource recovery in a downturned industry, reducing the risk to cash flow, resource recovery and safety should be a primary goal for all mining companies. The society in which we live is one of change, and we professionals are part of that society. The importance of this simple and obvious statement is often overlooked. My Presidential Address examines the question: can professionalism survive in our changing society?There is ample evidence to show that our society is changing, and that the rate of change is exponential. This rapid and accelerating rate of change is what Alvin Tomer refers to as "future shock". Rapid change means that we do not have time to become accustomed to what is happening around us and to feel comfortable with it; the greater the rate of change the greater the discomfort. The effect that this has on people is varied; the change may be either expected or totally unexpected.The rate and extent of change in society is not the same for all countries nor for all industries or occupations. Change is more rapid in Japan, Korea or Taiwan, than in Australia. It is more rapid in our cities than in the bush, more rapid for professional businessmen than for farmers. In our minerals and petroleum industries, we are still adjusting to the great changes that have taken place over the last fifteen years. In the past, products from our industries were sold on a free and open market. Today, mineral development and production in most undeveloped countries and some developed countries is manipulated for political, social and economic reasons. Changes of this nature have had a devastating effect on the operations of established mineral producers in the democracies.Because of the accelerating nature of change, we must recognise that the past is not a reliable guide to the future.Although extrapolation of the past into the future is a basic ingredient of commercial survival, extrapolation is less and less reliable.I borrow from others in quoting the Irish proverb: "The future is not what it was".The future is where our business lies and most of us at this Conference must endeavour to understand it and adjust to it. I believe in the old adage that:You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been and where you are at.There are a number of major factors which have created change within our social, economic, and industrial environment in recent years.

This paper is directed at the problems flowing from Australia's capital gains tax (CGT) on the disposal of exploration and mining tenements both in Australia and overseas. It will seek to identify the issues and give some idea of the dollar consequences of decisions lacking forethought. The paper should not only be seen in the context of Australian tenements. CGT applies to the disposal of any assets by an Australian resident anywhere in the world. Offshore incorporated companies are not necessarily free from CGT risk where it can be shown that control management and control of the relevant company is in Australia. Also the disposal by non residents of Australian tenements are potentially caught by CGT. Some will ask what has taxation got to do with a valuer who merely determines the value of assets. These days no determination can be blind to the consequences. Whether the consequences can encourage a movement in value is another thing dependent upon the circumstances; but? A role of an experienced taxation consultant is to point out parameters within which associated professionals can work. The parameters will vary from case to case, but these when clearly indicated may be of help to persons such as valuers. When one comes down to it real estate salesmen are never wrong. They have a feel for the market and almost through self fulfilling prophesies achieve sales at their guestimates. Whether they could have achieved higher considerations become virtually academic in the process. Of course I am not suggesting that tenement valuers can be compared to real estate salesmen, or am I? What is the value of a tenement? Is it the DCF/NPV type of generated value based on a large number of variable factors (ie what one may call the fundamental value)? Or is it what another may pay to purchase that tenement if it were on the market at an instant point in time? How big is the market, the quality of the bidders, the size of their purses, the needs of the buyer for comfortable fit, the premiums for foreigners, the standard of the marketing, the industry intelligence level of the bidders, the obligation to farm/sell down? The list goes on endlessly. One question must be.asked-"Is a range of values acceptable for tax purposes". ie Would any tax consultant ever provide a valuation to the Australian Taxation Office that indicates three or more possible values ie

The CSIRO acid alumina employs the essential steps of digestion, hydrolysis and calcination to produce pure alumina from ores too high in silica or too low in grade for the Bayer process. The two latter stages have been described in some detail previously but the digestion stage requires separate dis-cussion since ores vary widely in composition and reactivity. Kaolinitic clays require. roasting to 8000C to render the alumina soluble in the 11 per cent sulphuric acid used in the process while some ferruginous laterites require roasting to reduce the reactivity of iron minerals. The iron content of pregnant solutions is kept at a low figure by digesting at temperatures where the solubilities of ferric oxide or basic ferric sulphates are small. A.two-stage, counter-current digestion is necessary to extract a high percentage of alumina from the ores and to pro-duce a basic pregnant liquor, with an S03:Al203 ratio of 1. 9 suitable for high temperature hydrolysis. The second stage of digestion, called the modification stage, treats slightly acid liquors with exces's of ore in the temperature range 1200- 1400C. The first stage operates at 1700-190 C to extract further alumina from modification residues, using recycled acid obtained from later steps of the process. Both temperature ranges are critical for economic operation and for proper con-trol of the iron content of solutions. In batch experiments, thirty minutes is regarded as a suitable retention time for digestion and modification; ores which require much longer than this are less suitable for the process. Impurities. such assilica, titanium and vanadium oxides are discarded in the residue along with iron oxide and do not contaminate the final product. Bivalent metallic sulphates such as MgSO4 can build up in the circuit to a very considerable degree without affecting. product purity.Comparison with other processes shows that the C. S. I. R. O. process is superior for control of contamination by iron, which is the major problem in acid processes. The pure intermediate product (3 A1203. 4 S03. 9 H2O) is also more convenient for cal-cination to alumina than the hydrated aluminium sulphate usually recovered in other processes. Detailed cost comparisons must await pilot-plant evaluation of the C. S. I. R. O. process.

The interfaces between the Broken Hill ore lenses and the enclosing wallrocks are, on a broad scale, parallel to metamorphic layering in the wallrock gneisses and quartzites. In detail, however, the concordant contacts are interrupted by piercement structures, formed by plastic injection of ore into the wallrocks during metamorphism.These discordant bodies vary from minor projections measuring less than I m long, to major ore shoots ("droppers") as much as 60 m long. The intrusive bodies consist of fragmented ore and wallrock in amatrix of recrystallised sulphides. Wallrock fragments have been altered to manganese-rich and calcium-rich mineral assemblages. The injected ore is enriched in sulphides compared with the parent ore, and there has been enrichment in a number of minor elements.Piercement structures formed during the waning phase of high grade metamorphism, when incompetent ore was injected plastically under pressure into the wallrocks, particularly at fold crests. Adjacent to the "droppers", retrograde schists developed as a result of shearing along the ore-wallrock interface.

The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. Our studies emphasize the importance of source peridotite ranging from 'fertile lherzolite' (i.e. compositions with 3-4% CaO, A12O3, 0.3-0.5% Na2O) to refractory harzburgite (

Bentonites and active earths from N.S.W., previously analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties have been evaluated for use as bonding agents in quartzose moulding sands in terms of green properties and behaviour both with and without coal dust for iron castings poured at 1400°C.INTRODUCTIONIn the paper by Loughnan .and See (Part I) the occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties of the fuller's earth and bentonites of New South Wales were discussed and it was shown that some of the materials approached the quality of Wyoming bentonite. In the present paper the same samples from Marulan (Bl), Boggabri (B2), Wingen (B3), Muswellbrook (B6), Swansea (B8), Dubbo (89) and Trida (Bll) have been investigated with respect to their potential value as bonding agents in compounded moulding sands. Inaddition, the -20 micron fractions of the Boggabri (B2t) and Swansea (B8t,> were recovered and the former converted to a sodium clay, in order to assesE; the beneficiation possibilities. To study the creep properties and the energy evolution characteristics of the weakly cemented rock (WCR) in western China, the creep deformation damage law of weakly cemented mudstone (WCM) under graded loading and the energy evolution characteristics of each creep stage were analysed based on the triaxial graded loading creep test of WCR. The results showed that as the confining pressure increased, the creep failure strength of the WCM increased from 9.5 to 24.8 MPa, and the relative displacement of the mineral particles in the mudstone increased gradually, resulting in a reduction in the fracture angle from 79.7° to 58.3°. At the same stress level, the strain energy Ue, the total energy U, and the dissipation energy Ud all increased as the confining pressure increased, but the growth rates of U and Ud decreased gradually, while the growth rate of Ue remained high. At the end of the stable creep stage, Ue increased slowly with the confining pressure, while U and Ud increased rapidly with the confining pressure, and their growth rates were basically the same. At the end of the accelerated creep stage, the growth trends of these three energies were all positively correlated with the confining pressure, Ue was significantly lower than that at the end of the stable creep stage, and Ud and U were further increased. These results revealed the unique creep properties and energy evolution characteristics of the WCR, providing a theoretical basis for long-term stability control of roadways that are built with WCR.

Mechanical damage leads to the increase of effective stress of sediments, and pore closure hinders the discharge of methane gas. Ignoring the influence of mechanical damage leads to an excessive prediction of hydrate gas production. Therefore, a fully coupled model considering mechanical damage-chemical decomposition-gas-water two-phase seepage-temperature was developed in this study, and the model was verified by Masuda experiment. Based on the fully coupled model, the temporal and spatial evolution of the whole process of hydrate decomposition under the influence of three initial absolute permeabilities, three pressure drops and three water saturations were considered. The results showed that: • The gas production rate reached the peak value in a short time after depressurisation, and the peak value increased with the increase of the absolute initial permeability. The larger the initial absolute permeability was, the faster the damage variable reached the peak value. The porosity increased gradually before the damage variable reached its peak, and the gas flowed more easily. • When the pressure drop was low, the hydrate remained stable in solid form. As the pressure drop increased, the hydrate gradually began to decompose. The greater the pressure drop was, the faster the initial decomposition rate of the hydrate was. So the damage variable increased rapidly and the porosity increased continuously, resulting in a large gas production rate at the initial stage of decomposition. • The larger the initial water saturation was, the smaller the effective stress wss, resulting in the slow growth of the damage variable and the small change of porosity.While the gas relative permeability was small, it resulted in a smaller gas production rate, and hydrate decomposition was slower. • The damage variable showed a process of rapid growth first, then slowly increased to the peak, and then gradually decreased to a stable state. When the damage was considered, the hydrate decomposition time to the steady state was longer, and the gas production was about 80.68 per cent of that without considering the damage.

In recent times, with the global mining industry’s focus on sustainable development there has been a significant focus on mine closure and rehabilitation performance and reporting through the development of the International Council on Mining Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative and the Equator Principles. In addition, financial reporting obligations under International Financial Reporting Standards and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) have also led to better understanding and improvements with industry closure performance, liability management and reporting.Under these sustainable development principles and financial reporting obligations, mining companies are required to consider mine closure planning and associated cost estimates across all life cycle phases of the mine. Internal processes have been developed within mining companies to better understand their closure liabilities and obligations and likely costs and cost estimating processes are generally developed for long-term life-of-mine (asset) planning and budgeting, financial reporting for corporate balance sheet provisioning purposes, and regulator reporting for environmental bonding and financial assurances.These days mining companies need to plan for, prepare and actually mine for closure right from the start of a project. This means that their closure and rehabilitation liabilities throughout each stage of the mine life cycle phases must be understood, planned for, managed and controlled.So how is the industry performing? Understanding of closure liabilities is improving and reflected in liability cost estimations that are recognising the likely issues to be faced at closure, but there is a way to go to ensure that the industry doesn’t add to the increasing legacy liabilities being passed onto the wider community.CITATION:Slight, M and Lacy, H, 2016.
