The objectives of mining grade control are presented and examples of the techniques used in various open pit and underground mines are used to define the attributes of good grade control. Reasons are discussed for the success of various improved practices. The progressive development of grade control is presented and the balance between quantitative and qualitative data is analysed. The skills and resources required for grade control on mine sites that are using best practice are also presented. A number of problems in grade control have been solved recently however there are still issues that need to be addressed. Examination of the grade control process frequently stops after sample quality has been examined. There is much more beyond this that can now be optimised using conditional simulation models. Other future directions of mining grade control are also suggested. An extensive bibliography of published papers on grade control is included that will be maintained and updated on a website.

Re-commencement of mining in the Western Zone of Beaconsfield Gold Mine following a seismically-induced rockfall fatality in April 2006 required a change of mining method involving drilling and blasting from specially developed drives in the footwall of the orebody. Broken ore is mucked remotely from ore drives on each level. Support in the footwall drives is required to maintain stability during their development and as stopes are retreated, which increases induced stresses and further seismic events are triggered. The paper outlines the challenges involved and methods used to select the footwall drive support to handle both static and dynamic load demand. The importance of load development in the support system, its displacement capacity, the compatibility of support elements and energy absorption capacity of the support system are highlighted. It is usual in any support selection process to ensure that capacity exceeds demand to create a factor of safety. In this case the demands on the system relate to load, displacement and energy absorption and the support system capacity for each must ensure that appropriate factors of safety for each are achieved. The paper shows how these factors are not independent and that selecting a high factor of safety for load can lead to compatibility problems with support elements in the support system.

When a coalmine fire occurs, it is crucial to judge the developing trends inside the fire area by analysing the changes of gas concentration in order to formulate the proper rescue measures. At present, few researchers have focused on the relationship between the changing trend of gas product and basic characteristics of fire in the coal fire extinguishing process. To study the relationship of basic characteristics of coalmine fire during the extinguishing process, an experimental platform for coal combustion in a confined space was built, and gas production, flame image and coal temperature during the extinguishing process were monitored and analysed by an online continuous gas analysis instrument, camera and thermocouple. Research shows that during the burning phase of the coal sample in the confined space, the flame zone decreases gradually due to insufficient gas supply. The size of the flame zone fluctuates and shares a positive correlation with CO concentration, while sharing a negative correlation with O2 and CO2 concentrations. Then, in the extinguishing phase, the increasing rate of CO2 concentration and the decreasing rate of O2 concentration both decrease gradually, but CO concentration would rise for a period before it eventually decreases. A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.

Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has conducted an intensive VertiMill® (VTM) survey program at the Cannington mine concentrator as part of the ‘collaborative research in stirred milling technology’ program funded by Metso Minerals. Since 2003, Cannington has progressively added grinding capacity into the circuit through VTMs operating in secondary and regrinding duties. Cannington was one of the first mines to adopt this technology in secondary duty by installing two VTM-1500-WBs as part of a capacity expansion to produce sub-100 µm rougher feed. Subsequently, an additional VTM-800-WB was installed in the lead regrind circuit to prepare sub-20 µm cleaner stage feed.Several surveys were carried out to evaluate the VTM performance over a range of changed conditions. Among the key changes in operating variables were circuit power draw, feed rate and water addition to the bottom of the mill. The average specific energy for secondary duty was 3.7?kWh/t. The lead and zinc regrind mills consume 8.1 and 15.3 kWh/t respectively. Generally, the VTM installations have successfully prepared feed for rougher and cleaner circuits by reducing the top size into the floatable regime with steeper particle size distribution, which has led to enhanced recovery. Conventional industry tests used to determine leach recoveries are often fully monitored and may be time-consuming and expensive. Such tests may be limiting in geometallurgical applications where large numbers of samples are required to be processed for characterisation of an ore deposit. BHP Billiton currently use a fully instrumented leach test for characterisation of Olympic Dam uranium-rich samples. Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific Research and Industrial Organisation (CSIRO) were approached to develop an alternative to these full-scale leach tests that could allow for the ranking of samples in terms of their leachability. The novel geometallurgical test was required to use samples of small mass and be affordable and rapid.Three leach test protocols were pursued in developing the small-scale tests. Kinetic leach tests were performed using mild conditions at higher pH, low temperature and low oxidation reduction potential, moderate conditions at intermediate pH, temperature and oxidation reduction potential and aggressive conditions at lower pH, higher temperature and higher reduction potential.This paper presents results from 44 leach tests on 11 samples with varying uranium mineralogy. The developed small-scale tests correlate well with data from the more costly conventional industry laboratory tests, indicating the possibility of using this alternative test as a geometallurgical leach proxy. Simple regression analysis confirmed the importance of pH, reduction potential and temperature on uranium extraction. “Given the increasing scrutiny of the mining industry and its relatively poor record with regards to mine tailings management, increased requirements to minimise water usage (often accompanied by very high costs of water) and the need to demonstrate achievable long-term closure strategies, it is likely that the option of a filtered tailings system will need to be considered in many operations in future.” (Australian Centre for Geomechanics, 2018). Given such a statement as a conference introduction, it is only appropriate that a range of potential technologies are investigated and compared, to create awareness for even underrated but appropriate technologies. The advantages and disadvantages of all technologies need to be considered and analysed. Suppliers are swift to promote their technologies advantages; however aspects of sustainability are not always fully understood. Perhaps a combination of two filtration technologies is appropriate. This paper delves into the technical details, good or bad, of four mechanical dewatering technologies in tailings dewatering and provides insight on an undervalued and, in the author’s opinion, young technology – the screw press.

Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs Operations are currently mining iron ore in their South Central Pit. Prior to the commencement of mine operations, Hope Downs carried out an extensive archaeological investigation and identified an ancient rock shelter lying within the proposed mine boundaries. The site is significant to the traditional owners/custodians of the land in this part of the Pilbara, and thus the final pit design was changed to preserve the rock shelter, which now lies 30 m outside the mine boundary. In order to further preserve this ancient dwelling from blast-induced damage, blast design procedures were improved over time to minimise the vibration impact when blasting close to the shelter. Blasting and vibration monitoring commenced in May 2008 using pyrotechnic delay sequences and normal-direction firing. In October 2009 electronic delays were used to reverse-fire blasts close to the shelter in order to create a damage zone between the initiating holes and the rock shelter. A detailed statistical analysis of the vibration data shows a reduction in the higher levels of vibration for blasts fired after October 2009, which is most likely caused by the created damage zone. In May 2010, a site-specific vibration model was developed and implemented, and based on Monte Carlo waveform superposition. This model was used to give a further insight and improvement to the blast delay sequences when blasting close to the shelter. However, such models are expensive to implement and have limitations, which reduces their potential for estimating the probability of getting an excessive vibration due to a given blast design. In this regard, it is more realistic and significantly less expensive to use a recently developed probabilistic analysis based on simple charge weight scaling. This analysis shows that there was a higher probability of exceeding prescribed vibration limits at the rock shelter for blasts fired before October 2009 than there was for blasts fired after October 2009.

People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

Rock bolts are commonly used to reinforce ground in underground mining and civil tunnel environments. Rock bolts serve two main functions: i) they suspend large, loose blocks of ground, and ii) provide a protective pressure arch to restrain the deformation in an excavated void. Automated and precise tracking of rock bolt positions can assist with the operational success of ground support by reducing the amount of labour required in current manual practices. A point cloud is a large list of x, y and z coordinates in three-dimensional space, that when visualised, show a precise 3D representation of a physical environment. Point cloud data can be collected using accurate LiDAR scanners. These scanners can be mounted on a stationary tripod or on a moving vehicle. A key way point cloud data is used is in the bolt detection project being completed in conjunction with UNSW Sydney, which aims to provide an automated location of underground rock bolts from LiDAR scans. The immediate challenge with identifying rock bolts is that they constitute a very small portion of the data set amounting to approximately 0.01 per cent of some of the collected civil tunnel data. The process of detecting rock bolts from point clouds therefore requires a quick elimination of large background data while still preserving the bolt data. A further challenge is that the geometry of underground environments can often be very complex and non-uniform. To overcome these challenges, a two-step coarse to fine deep learning approach is taken. The first step is a coarse background elimination step aimed at removing as much of the background data as possible. The second step is a finer classification method, which uses deep learning to further segment the bolts from the remaining background. Additionally, a computer vision module is being implemented, which is expected to increase the detection rate by adding another dimension to the training data set.

Heavy fuel oil has been injected into blast furnaces in order to reduce the coke rate, to improve productivity and to control the furnace heat condition. However, in the first oil crisis at the end of 1973, it became necessary to develop an injection technique of new fuels into blast furnaces to reduce oil consumption. In Kobe Steel, Ltd., it was thought that the injection of a coal-oil mixture (COM) into blast furnaces could be developed in a shorter time than pulverised coal injection. The development of this technique was under- taken in 1974, and COM was injected through two tuyeres of the No.3 blast furnace at the Kobe works in 1977 and 1978. In addition, in order to study the combust- ibility of COM and the phenomena in the tuyere zone, the development of a gas sampling method was under- taken in 1975. In this paper, the results of the injection tests and gas sampling tests are reported.

One of the greatest practical difficulties of measuring airblast occurs when a significant wind is blowing onto the microphone. Small windscreens are usually used to mitigate the wind noise on the microphone, but in some wind conditions, sound pressure levels (SPL) of over 120 decibel (linear) are frequently recorded. There are no specific procedures to mitigate the effect of wind noise when measuring airblast in any of the standards or guidelines pertaining to the measurement of airblast from blasting operations, other than the requirement to use an effective windscreen. A search for relevant literature was undertaken and measurements were taken over a period of six months at a test site using alternative microphone measurement methods. Previous researchers’ experiments with windscreens in silenced wind tunnels showed that wind noise can be reduced through the use of large diameter windscreens, and that at low frequencies, the windscreen size and the material type makes no difference to measured SPL values. Other researchers found that wind turbulence caused significant SPL measurement problems. A comparison with field data failed to explain the extremely high SPL recorded by the field microphones at wind velocities much lower than those used in wind tunnel testing. It has been concluded that turbulent airflow over and behind the microphone is a significant contributor to extraneous noise in airblast measurements in windy conditions. This turbulence can be generated by objects upwind of the microphone or by the microphone itself if the windscreen is ineffective. Reducing the wind speed over the microphone by placing it on the ground is the approach required by the international standard for the measurement of noise from wind turbine generators (IEC 61400–11). This paper presents data that illustrates the extent of the problem, reports on the trial of three different microphone mounting locations for measuring airblast from blasting and concludes that in windy conditions, microphones placed on the ground substantially avoid wind problems and do not reduce the measured SPL of the airblast.CITATION:Henley, K, 2015. Sensor-based particle sorting of gold ores is the masterclass of preconcentration. The technical challenges of a grade in ppm scale makes a direct detection with currently available technology in milliseconds impossible. Consequently, the detection and classification of particles into ore and waste classes relies on detectable proxies which are the foundation for the classification. These must be reliable and repeatable across the ore bodies processed in future. A sensor-based particle ore sorting equipment must therefore be calibrated systematically by understanding the gold deportation in different lithological groups. Also, it must be in best operational state to minimise possible misplacement. The technical challenges are met by a stringent financial regime governing the business case. Many gold ore sorting projects require a stable grade of gold in the rejected waste significantly below 1gr/t. Two examples are introduced in this paper:  The pilot results and operational experience of X-ray transmission (XRT)-based particle ore sorting for pebble sorting of sulphide associated ore;  Laser-based particle ore sorting for pebble circuit of an orogenic, quartz associated gold ore. Usually, sensor-based particle sorters are installed in the crushing section of a plant. However, for large capacity plants, the number of equipment required, and the associated material handling costs result in significant capital and operating expenses for plants with 1200tph run-of-mine capacity. As a conclusion, it was decided to investigate sensor-based particle ore sorting applied to the pebble stream of two existing semi autogenous mills.

Over the last 100 years in the Polish mining industry considerable work has been done to assess optimum slurry, develop flexible delivery systems and adjust the fill technology to a wide variety of mining and geological conditions. Sand or industrial mineral waste materials for the backfilling of underground voids are used to control ground movement and surface deformation. This paper discusses various criteria to he considered in the preparation of a fill, including slurry properties, mine infrastructure, mining geometry, placement methods and the purpose of the backfill. This paper presents laboratory and in situ test data on the influence of materials parameters on the slurry flow in a pipeline system, stiffness, permeability, binding time and strength of a backfill, on the distribution of mixture in underground voids or the penetration between roof fall Materials.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance in terms of produced ore grades and quantity and extraction process efficiency often deviate from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.With the development of modern information and communication technology over the last decade, a flood of data about different aspects of the production process is available in a real-time manner. For example, sensor technology enables online characterisation of geochemical, mineralogical and physical material characteristics on conveyor belts or at working faces. The ability to utilise this additional information and feed it back into reserve block models and planning assumptions opens up new opportunities to continuously control the decisions made in production planning to increase resource recovery and process efficiency. This leads to a change in paradigm from a discontinuous method to near real-time reserve reconciliation and model updating, which calls for suitable modelling and optimisation methodologies to quantify prior knowledge in the reserve model, process and integrate information from different sensor sources, back propagate the gain in information into reserve models and efficiently optimise operational decisions in real-time.This paper introduces the concept of an integrated closed-loop framework for real-time reserve management, incorporating sensor-based material characterisation, geostatistical modelling under uncertainty, modern data assimilation methods for sequential model updating and mining system simulation and optimisation. To date, Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in AMIRA International LimitedÆs (the mineral industries research association) AMIRA P9 project, to develop models for several Anglo Base Metals flotation plants. Further detailed analysis of the data which was generated has realised additional benefits: the various hydrodynamic measurements were useful in comparing cell operating parameters to literature sources, while the laboratory batch tests give an indication of plant recovery potential. A detailed cell by cell mass balance, which is a critical feature of the modelling process, is in its own right a valuable diagnostic tool. Several examples of how this can be used to highlight potential improvement areas in the plants are presented. The added understanding gained from sampling each cell is clear and this is shown to more than compensate for any necessary modifications needed to allow sampling to take place. The model fitting process generates an ore floatability distribution, which is used in the JK SimFloat simulation package to assess the effect of possible changes to each of the circuits. An example of an actual circuit change as a result of this approach is presented. The current limitations of and the potential improvements to the modelling process are also briefly discussed. Future models will be extended to include enhanced size and mineralogical information where the basic models suggest this has potential to improve understanding.

Lithium battery electric powered vehicles and machines (BEVs) continue to gain traction inunderground mining use, with predictions they will dominate the underground light and heavy vehicle fleets for some mines within the next decade. There are clear advantages for ventilation systems through reduced heat output and the elimination of harmful exhaust gases and diesel particulates. However, the risks and effects of BEV fire emergencies for underground personnel and ventilationsystems are still largely in the early stages of analysis and understanding. This paper conducts an industry review of a selection of lithium battery fire incidents and research.A research paper review on lihthium fire behaviour, intensity and toxicity will be analysed and comparisons made with equivalent diesel machinery fires for context. Guidelines for mine firemodelling parameters will be offered to assist in predicting the behaviour, heat and emissions from BEV fires, and recommendations and conclusions will be drawn on the specific hazards of lithium battery fires compared to conventional diesel powered machines.

Choosing a ceramic capillary action filter is often favoured in processes where low energy consumption is important, such as the dewatering of iron ore. In addition, the performance of the filter medium is essential, and the possibility to regenerate the medium is an advantage compared to other types of filter media. Although low, roughly 8 - 9 w-per cent for iron ore concentrate, and even cake moisture is the primary goal of dewatering, the introduction of better filtration processes can result in significant improvements of water economy and material efficiency.As industrial beneficiation processes are often complicated in their chemistry due to impurities originating from the ore itself, from the up-stream processing equipment and from the process water used, the characterisation of the filter media after usage might provide relevant information on what actually takes place during long operating periods. The aim of this study was to obtain new information on the fouling of fi lter media in an iron ore process to enhance and develop the regeneration process of the media in the future.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterise ceramic filter media used in the dewatering of magnetite. Principal component analysis and discriminant analysis were introduced to identify trends in the data. Two types of media blockages were found to play an important role in an acidic iron ore dewatering process: fouling by slurry particles and by in situ crystallisation of a calcium compound, of which the latter originated from the combination of process water and process chemistry.
