This paper discusses the technical and cost benefits of alternative data collection techniques used to collect lithological information, obtain laboratory testing samples and perform in situ testing. A comparison between diamond coring and sonic coring techniques is made using data from a recent geotechnical investigation for a final pit slope cut-back. The impacts of the coring method on laboratory strength testing results, material character testing and, ultimately, the mass strength parameters and subsequent slope design adopted are compared. The sonic coring method was chosen out of necessity and enabled the collection of tube samples of a clay unit of interest as well as bulk samples for material character and geochemical testing. The sonic coring generated unexpected degradation of clastic units, while cohesive clay-dominated units were recovered well. The likelihood that disturbance due to the coring method would result in lower than expected triaxial strength results was recognised ahead of time, with surplus samples collected and single-stage triaxial strength testing undertaken. This testing compared favourably with historic three-stage testing, where sample degradation occurred during the later stages. Material character testing of fine-grained, clay-dominated units was comparable with historic diamond core testing, while grain size estimates for more clastic units tended to be finer than previous results. The use of sonic coring over non-cored methods enabled the collection of material texture data, geotechnical properties and a full suite of geochemical analyses. This provided a comprehensive understanding of the lithological and geotechnical character of the rock and soil mass. A high-confidence geotechnical model was developed. The end result was the development of a slope design that was more aggressive than was previously designed (5° steeper inter-ramp angle), which has proven to be appropriate to the conditions following excavation. The disposal of dewatered coalmine tailings and coarse reject within spoil piles is gaining popularity as a means of eliminating separate surface tailings storage facilities or dams. The contrasting characteristics of coalmine spoil, coarse reject and tailings are somewhat complimentary, making the co-disposal of dewatered tailings within spoil piles geotechnically feasible and environmentally attractive. However, the impacts of mixing plant rejects within spoil piles are not well understood; in particular, the effects of water draining from the mixed plant rejects on the moisture content of the surrounding spoil. Changes in moisture content can cause additional collapse and degradation settlements of the spoil pile. A series of laboratory tests has been undertaken on mixtures of dewatered coalmine tailings, coarse reject and spoil. The results of these tests have been incorporated into a spreadsheet-based settlement prediction tool to investigate the effects of incorporating mixed plant rejects on total spoil pile settlements. Froth flotation process requires the use of frothers. These important flotation agents are commonly characterised as either æselectiveÆ or æpowerfulÆ and are chosen following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or pilot plant tests. Fundamental properties of the flotation frothers have been extensively studied over the last few years. These studies have led to the development of standardised procedures to characterise frothers in terms of their ability to reduce bubble size and to increase foam stability. In this research project, the performance of five frothers in flotation of coal is evaluated and related to the fundamental properties of these agents. Since the recovery of water in the concentrate is closely related to the non-selective transport of solid particles by entrainment, the tested frothers are also assessed in terms of their ability to promote the transport of water towards the froth collection zone, both in absence and in presence of solids.

Cononish is a steep, narrow NE-SW trending vein system that was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments. It shows brittle style deformation and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian foliations. The ore shoots plunge 45¦SW, have a 40 to 80?m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 and 260?m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two and rarely three of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold. Silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally <100?¦m in size and locally clusters. Visible gold up to 2000?¦m in size is rare. Gold and silver are generally spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur also. Electrum and gold occur with galena in pyrite-hosted fractures. Gold is also associated with the contacts between galena and pyrite grains. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Over 16?km of diamond drilling and a 1.2?km exploration adit has provided data to support a Mineral Resource estimate of 169?000?oz Au and 631?000?oz Ag reported in accordance with the 2004 JORC Code.CITATION:Dominy, S C, Platten, I M, Xie, Y and Sangster, C J S, 2013. An overview is given of two new developments in mine atmospheric monitoring. A new personal dust monitor (PDM) that gives real-time respirable dust readings is discussed. The unit is mounted within the minerÆs cap lamp battery and internally measures the true particle mass of dust collected on its filter. Samples are available for later mineralogical analysis and results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as optically-based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram-level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. The monitor has been evaluated under an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) grant and is being adopted for statutory mine respirable dust determinations in the United States (US). The monitor has particular application for determining location of high dust sources. It can evaluate the efficiency of engineering means of suppression and other approaches to reducing dust levels. It has been recognised that the PDMÆs unique measurement approach has application to allow real-time atmospheric diesel particulate matter (DPM) monitoring. The industry has no real-time atmospheric DPM monitor at present. Recent surveys in New South Wales and Queensland show significant numbers of miners continue to face full shift DPM exposures in excess of internationally accepted levels. Real-time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pinpoint high exposure zones where a number of trucks and other vehicles work in areas of poor ventilation. Knowledge of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground minersÆ exposure. Approaches to uses of the DPM form of the monitor and the design of tag boards are discussed. Some outcomes from mine tests with both these new instruments are given.

Blast fragmentation size distribution and thus blast design have been found to have a direct impact on the load and haul cycle through excavator dig time and bucket payload. Previous studies have demonstrated that by reducing the excavator dig time and increasing bucket payload, significant improvements can be made in both productivity and unit cost. Simulation work reported in the literature indicates that a 20 per cent improvement in dig time may result in only a three per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. At the same time, a ten per cent improvement in bucket payload will directly translate to a ten per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. Based upon these findings, extensive laboratory and field work have been undertaken in the past to correlate blast fragmentation distribution to bucket payload. In contrast, the literature reports limited studies quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on excavator dig time. Field work was conducted at Placer Dome Asia PacificÆs Granny Smith Mine (Wallaby Pit) in Western Australia, concentrating on quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on the dig time of a Liebherr 994 hydraulic excavator (shovel attachment with 14 m3 bucket). Fragmentation was assessed for each truck load of material using the Split Desktop system, while the excavator cycle analysis was conducted manually. Measured fragmentation P80 (fragment size at which 80 per cent of material passes) values ranged from 200 mm to 1200 mm. The field study investigated the impact of various fragmentation parameters (P20, P50, P80, cumulative per cent passing 250 mm size fraction, and uniformity index) on the average and total dig times. The results indicate that the fragmentation P80 provides the best correlation to average dig time (total dig time divided by the number of bucket passes to load a truck). The total dig time was found to be dependant upon the fragmentation P80 and the number of bucket passes to fill a truck. Monte Carlo simulation results, based upon these relationships, indicate a 26 per cent improvement in average dig time and a 12 per cent to 46 per cent improvement in total dig time (bucket passes ranging from 4 to 8), with a change in fragmentation P80 from 600 mm to 200 mm.

The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

The Obuasi Mine has been in operation for the past 100 years. Within this period a host of mining methods have been employed during its various changing phases. The causes for the changes are multiple, ranging from orebody capability, dynamics, technology, safety, economics, production levels, geotechnical, etc. Mining methods applied have also ranged from timber square setts, conventional cut-and-fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel caving, mechanised cut-and-fill, longitudinal and transverse open stoping, and lately longitudinal retreat mining method (LRMM).The Obuasi Mine has a world class underground resource potential of about 27 million ounces. A third of this is in reserve. The orebody is subvertical, with multiple lodes and with widths ranging from 1.5 - 40 m. It stretches along 8.5 km N/S strike. A cursory statistical analysis on the various resource ore widths show a higher percentage (60 per cent) of the resource being within the range of about 1.5 - 10 m. Thus a high proportion of the resource is amenable to narrow vein mining methods. This has enhanced the choice of LRMM as an alternative method. Also, with the increasing cost of mining over time, LRMM, which eliminates expensive and time consuming footwall drives, will become far more advantageous as compared to the transverse/longitudinal open stoping methods which currently constitute about 40 per cent of the total underground production.The LRMM currently delivers about 20 per cent of the Obuasi Mine production. Plans are underway to improve total underground production from the current average of 160 000 tpm to about >180 000 tpm in the next few years and about 20 - 40 per cent more in the foreseeable future. Recoverable ounces will also increase from 26 000 to about 34 000 ounces per month. The proportion of LRMM in the business plan is also expected to increase from the current modest level to about 50 per cent. Despite its tremendous advantages in terms of economics and productivity, the method is facing some challenges during its inception. Spent Pot Lining (SPL) is an unavoidable waste product of the electrolytic process in the smelting of aluminium. SPL is considered to be a hazardous waste in various countries because it contains significant quantities of absorbed fluoride along with traces of cyanide. The disposal of SPL has been primarily in landfill because of difficulties in the development of a successful techno-economic SPL treatment process. Increasing concern about SPL landfilling practices is resulting in regulations in some countries to ban this form of disposal. As a consequence stock piling of SPL is occurring in an increasing number of countries pending the development of a successful treatment process. In 1992 Portland Aluminium investigated a SPL treatment process based on pyrometallurgical technology and approached a company called Ausmelt in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, to ascertain if their submerged lance technology furnace process would be suitable to treat SPL. This approach resulted in Portland Aluminium, Alcoa and Ausmelt personnel working together on trials during 1992 - 1994 in Ausmelt's demonstration furnace to produce a slag and off gases containing hydrogen and sodium fluoride. The trials also evaluated the effect of oxygen enrichment to increase the concentration of hydrogen fluoride and the ability to recycle sodium fluoride particulate produced as the furnace off gases cooled. Other separate developmental work by Portland Aluminium, using CSIRO, resulted in the production of aluminium fluoride from the offgases from the pyrometallurgical process. The results of these projects influenced Portland Aluminium and Alcoa to authorise up to $A26 400 000 in December 1995 to construct a Research and Development processing facility to treat SPL at Portland. The Portland Aluminium unique gas treatment process converts hydrogen fluoride in the furnace offgases to aluminium fluoride in a multistage fluidised bed reactor, designed by Portland Aluminium. The aluminium fluoride produced in the reactor has been trialed successfully in Alcoa's aluminium smelting process as a replacement for imported aluminium fluoride. The installation in mid-2001 of a slag granulation system has enabled the production of a granulated vitreous slag having leachability qualities that conform to Victorian EPA criteria for the unrestricted use of the granulated vitreous slag from 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process'. The unrestricted use of the granulated slag successfully completes 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process' which treats the hazardous waste material SPL and converts it into non hazardous useful products.

"Regardless of orebody value, at some stage, the pit will reach a depth where the reward for mining wider and/or deeper is not justified by the anticipated returns. ‘Last-blast’ strategies may help to some degree in recovering additional quantities of the resource but when a pit remains, there is often significant value left in the ground. In addition, in many cases, one or many good reasons may dictate why going underground and pursuing the orebody below the pit is also not justifiable. Whereas the company can hopefully move on to other more prospective parts of the orebody, the remaining options for the pit are usually very limited. Typically the pit is either held for potentially more favourable future pit expansion opportunities or it could be used for an alternative purpose, such as tailings or waste storage. This paper will present an alternative option that involves the direct extraction of values using in situ recovery (ISR) methods to recover additional value metals from the walls and/or floor of the pit. ISR involves circulating a fluid through the remaining orebody, solubilising the target metal and subsequently returning the solution to the surface for metal recovery. ISR is not the panacea to all but it has been employed selectively in the minerals industry for some time and the production of metals, such as uranium, rely heavily on this approach. ISR is not yet considered by many operators as an approach to compete with open pit or underground mining, largely because of the perceived limitations of this approach and the perceptions of risk. Rapid recent development of tools and enabling technologies relevant to ISR have made us reconsider the most economic approach to extracting many other metals from known mineral systems, even those currently listed as subeconomic. We suggest that ISR has the potential to make mine operators rethink the end of the pit life and adopt an innovative ISR approach to work toward a more complete recovery of value metals from existing pits.Citation:Kuhar, L L and Robinson, D J, 2016. The demands of the economy require larger manufacturing facilities using greater quantit- ies of raw materials which must be mined, handl- ed, stockpiled and recovered with efficiency and dependability. All over the world, mining com- panies, steel manufacturers, power stations and process plants are not only seeking but finding methods of increasing outputs and'reducing costs in the field of materials handling. In mining bigger continuous mining machines and shovels, larger trucks and crushers are digging and processing greater quantities of differing materials which have to be handled and shipped at rates once thought to be impossible. To implement such schemes demands the blending of a lot of diverse-equipment, mining machinery, bins, feeders, reclaimers and it is here that the belt conveyor assumes a role of ever increas- ing importance. Significant developments have taken place in the seventies with respect to conveyor belt transportation; not only in the systems but also in the components which combine to make such systems work efficiently.

The acidic and metal rich waters that are generated from acid sulfate soil (ASS) drainage can have damaging impacts upon ecosystems. The most obvious impact has been the discolouration of water and occasional fish kills. ASSÆs produce these acidic and metal rich waters when pyrite in soil is oxidised. Land management techniques are an essential long-term requirement to minimise the amount of pyrite oxidation. Acidic water that cannot be prevented through land management can be neutralised by other techniques. Powdered lime is the most common material in agriculture that is applied directly to soils and waters. Powdered lime can be expensive and if applied dry it may aggregate. Since the aggregated particles of lime are larger they could sink rapidly in the water column and not react. In waters with high concentrations of dissolved iron and aluminium the lime particles may become coated with a metal oxy-hydroxide precipitate, which will decrease its reactivity. A unique lime-dispensing machine, the Waterways Lime Spreader, has been developed to neutralise acidic waterways. The Waterways Lime Spreader can produce a solution rich in fine lime from larger limestone fragments. The current size of the machine means only 3.5 grams per second of limestone can be emitted. This output will neutralise low acidity waters, however, for high acidity waters the time for neutralisation can be long. More reactive chemicals such as hydrated lime or increasing the size of the machine will reduce this neutralisation time. The Waterways Lime Spreader is also capable of producing slurry mixtures if powdered materials are required. Trials with the Waterways Lime Spreader were undertaken in part of the Clothiers Creek catchment located in northeast NSW, Australia. A small drain with a water volume of 4 m3 was neutralised with crushed limestone to pH 6.9 from an initial pH of 2.6 and an acidity of 902 mg/L CaCO3 in 160 minutes. In comparison a drain with a slightly larger volume of 6 m3 that had an initial pH of 3.2 and an acidity of 753 mg/L CaCO3 was neutralised with hydrated lime to pH 11.8 in five minutes. The Waterways Lime Spreader has been used successfully to neutralise water from acid sulfate soils. It is expected that future applications of the machine may be for the neutralisation of acid rock drainage or acidified lakes.

The Morning Star Gold Mine has operated over a 101-year period, producing gold from narrow quartz veins and sulfide stockworks hosted mainly within a dioritic-gabbroic dyke. The deposit has been developed over a vertical depth of 980 m with drilling extending the vertical depth to greater than 1200 m. Currently there is a total Inferred Resource of 4.6 million tonnes at a grade of 6 g/t for 910 000 ounces of contained gold resources, which comprises an underground project and a surface project. Significant variation exists between the grade of drill core intersections and that observed in face sampling and subsequent production reconciliation (250 - 650 per cent). Studies were carried out on ten major production reefs, where the grades of drill intercepts were compared with face samples collected during development and mining. The implications of this study have been used as justification to assign production or stope/development grades where applicable to resources that are direct extensions of the historical development headings. Grade assignment and its impact on sensitivity for gold resources are detailed and show a 40 per cent variation in the gold resource, depending upon whether a production or calculated stope grade is used in grade assignment for the major reef deposits. Recent diamond drilling has intersected approximately 40 new gold bearing quartz reefs and sulfide zones that contain all the key mineralogical and structural indicators, and traditional large variations in gold grades similar to the historical major production zones. The implications of grade factoring and grade assignment are the greatest challenges confronting the resource estimation team in defining grade for these new zones. Grade assignment is seen as a method of balancing known historical production observations with the irregular grade distribution inferred from drill core assay results. Ongoing mine development and bulk sampling works are planned to validate the grade assignment process. The first stage of this process is the trial mining of the newly discovered Maxwell Reef (MR). The stope drawpoints were completed in August 2008 and the MRS1 stope is scheduled for completion in September. The stope reconciliation results will be presented at the October 2008 conference.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage. A series of ON/OFF trials were conducted, with the finding that a very low dose of AEROPHINE® 3418A increased nickel recovery by 0.6 per cent compared to using xanthate alone.This paper provides a brief operational history and overview of the Forrestania operations, a description of the trial and an analysis of the results.Citation:Emery, S, Flynn, M, Tan, K and Munro, C, 2016. Rio Tinto Alcan has undertaken feasibility level assessments into the expansion of its bauxite mining operation in an area south of the Embley River in far north Queensland. The project has the potential to extend their Weipa operations by approximately 40 years.The construction and operation of two additional mineral ore processing plants are proposed for the South of Embley project. Golder Associates was engaged to develop and conduct modelling assessments of potential sources of water supply required by mineral ore processing.Two models were developed using GoldSim: a dam yield model and a water balance model. GoldSim is a graphical object-oriented modelling environment with a capacity to carry out dynamic probabilistic simulations. Originally developed by Golder, GoldSim has been applied successfully in a decision support role to a range of mine water management operations.The dam yield model was used to provide estimates of reliability and volume of annual water supply of several potential surface water dams. This information was then used to determine a hierarchy of water supply options for processing plant operations. The water balance model dynamically simulated the water demands of the two production plants and the consequential response in water supply, with respect to the timing and discharges provided by the various source options.Use of the model provided a preliminary operational tool to assist with water supply management decisions. Water quality issues required a blending of water from separate sources and attention paid to scheduling to ensure water supply through the dry season. The model also helped identify risks to water supply in the event of underperformance of one or more water supply sources. A critical issue associated with mining operations has been the stability of tailings impoundments. Some breach events have produced catastrophic tailings flows that have caused significant economic damage, mass casualties and long-lasting environmental impact in the downstream environment. This paper reports independently estimated values of runout distance, inundation area and fahrboschung of 16 tailings flows. The adopted methodology involves the geospatial analysis of satellite and aerial imagery to classify each tailings flow into a primary impact zone (Zone 1: main overland flow) and a secondary impact zone (Zone 2: along-creek diluted flow) to characterise runout. Only Zone 1 runout values are reported herein given the greater significance in relation to downstream impact. The fahrboschung is calculated using elevation data from global 30 m digital elevation models (DEMs) and source literature. The results show that all the selected tailings flows travelled long distances (2.4 km to 98.5 km) and inundated large areas (0.35 km2 to 27.0 km2) over very low fahrboschung values (0.04° to 4.8°). This indicates very high flow mobility that is largely governed by the high water content sourced from interstitial waters and, in many cases, supernatant ponds. Scatter plots display poor correlations owing to the complexity and variability in travel path characteristics (confinement, slope angle and obstructions) and the inherent properties of the flowing mass. The slope angle of the travel path exerts a strong control over the flow velocity which has implications on kinetic energy and downstream geomorphological impact. Mean tailings flow velocities may range from ~6 m/s on near-flat, open terrain to over 30 m/s in relatively steeper, channelised travel paths, indicating that tailings flows fall within the extremely rapid and high mobility spectrum of global mass movements. The presented work forms an inceptive part of the CanBreach tailings project, a major component of which is to develop a comprehensive database of case histories to examine the role of geotechnics, failure modes and downstream terrains in influencing tailings flow behaviour.

The Republic of Uganda aims to exploit its’ significant, un-developed iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its’ iron and steel industry across all the stages of the supply chain. Large prospects of iron ore exists in Uganda in the eastern (Tororo) regions and southwestern (Kisoro-Kabale) regions of the country. The Kisoro-Kabale iron ore projects covers mineralisation in hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-eastern Congo-Tanzania Craton; covering ten Iron ore prospects. The prospects include Kamena, Karukara, Nyamiringa, Kyanyamuzinda, Rugando, Katagata, Rwengongo, Kijuguta, Kihumuro and Katuna. High-grade hematite ore prospects in south-western Uganda have known grades ranging from 55 per cent to 68 per cent iron ore content with an exploration target estimated at over 500 million tonne (Mt). Small scale production of iron ore from the south-western regions provide raw material to existing steelmaking and direct reduction iron ore plants located in the Jinja and Iganga districts of eastern Uganda. Large quantities of iron ore and other steelmaking raw material, however, are required to be imported into Uganda due to the limited exploration and development of their own iron ore mining operations. A joint collaboration between the European Union (EU), the Department of the Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), Ugandan Ministry of Mines in partnership with Australian drilling and mining consultancies, ADT Africa and Kalem Group as a EU funded project was undertaken during November 2022 and September 2023. Exploration and evaluation of the ten iron ore prospects in south-western Uganda was undertaken through geological mapping, drilling, assaying, and technical studies with the view to attract investment for the development of Uganda iron ore mining and steelmaking industry. The collaboration developed mineral exploration policy, guidelines and standards, an iron ore exploration manual, a geological data management policy, and to support the sustainable development of iron ore mining in Uganda through building the capacity of local Ugandan geology and mining personnel through the transfer of knowledge and expertise from experienced iron ore experts. The quantification of these resources is an important first step in assessing their economic potential and attracting mining investors. This paper presents an overview of the investigation program and the preliminary results as an important first step in attracting mining investors to this exciting new iron ore province.

Mining operations have large power requirements. The biggest consumers of energy are the drives for the mills located in the concentrators. Assuming that the decision is made on how many mills are needed and how big these mills will be, it can be determined how these mills should be driven. The decision as to which drive should be applied depends on design limits for different mechanical or electrical drives, anticipated operation modes, capital expenditure optimisation and lifecycle cost optimisation.The task for the engineer specifying the drive equipment is to select a drive solution that can debottleneck the operation, avoid interruption of production and enhance the reliability of the process. At the same time, the engineer must choose a design that enables cost optimisation either in a single investment or in relation to the total cost of ownership (TCO).This paper outlines different mechatronic or electric drive alternatives for tube or horizontal mills applied in the mining industry, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Over the past three decades, mining operations have seen a significant increase in the use of contractors for mining, camp management and catering, recruitment, maintenance, power management, and commissioning. More recently contractors have been engaged for stores and logistics, OH&S, environmental, exploration, training etc. In some countries, such as South Africa, the trend is towards total outsourcing of all aspects of a mining operation which is coordinated by the owners’ management team.During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) more Australian companies considered and/or took on this approach to recruiting for both projects and operations as mining companies were forced to rethink their corporate strategies as commodity prices plummeted to low levels, pushing operations and projects into potentially financially unviable territory.This paper discusses the labour recruitment, commissioning and operating strategy of Western Areas NL (WSA), with the assistance of Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd (IMO), as it progressed construction, commissioning and operation of the Cosmic Boy nickel concentrator at the Forrestania Nickel Project during and post GFC. The use of IMO contractors allowed Western Areas to mitigate labour cost risk during the uncertainty caused by the GFC and let their management team focus on the task of bringing a new operation into viable and profitable production.
