This paper summarises the influence of slurry rheology on the grinding throughput of batch laboratory and continuous plant-scale mills operating in open and closed circuit configurations. The results of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals are demonstrated. An underlying rheological explanation of the above factors is offered which involves tying the specific rates of breakage that are occurring in the mill with the specific rheological character that the slurry is exhibiting at any given set of operating conditions. Some industrial scale operating guidelines are presented which have proven useful in increasing the net pro- duction capability of grinding circuits.

Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.

Accurate estimation of rock load and selection of types of ground reinforcement to match post-failure behaviour of rock mass are important issues to assure tunnel stability. This paper focuses on the main factors affecting rock load to evaluate the capabilities of the existing models for prediction of rock load. Rock mass properties, project features and excavation method, as well as ground conditions and stress condition were found to be the key factors affecting the magnitude of rock load. Field data from tunnels of about 37.5?km driven in several geological structures in non-squeezing ground was used in this study. An in depth statistical analysis was performed on data to find correlations between the input parameters and measured/observed rock load. A weighting system was proposed to obtain the proper contribution of each factor for estimation of rock load in tunnelling through various ground conditions. The new classification system offered predicted values for rock load that were in a good agreement with the actual field measurements. The high disturbance factor (D>0.4) was the prime factor which controlled the rock load. Rock mass quality was the second key factor influencing rock load, which could be estimated by GSI, GSIresidual , especially when combined with tunnel depth.CITATION:Afshar, T, Sharifzadeh, M and Rostami, J, 2014. Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified. The recycling of process water comes with increased electrolyte concentrations that affect water quality, which may in turn affect the flotation performance of valuable minerals (Hirajima et al, 2016). Electrolytes such as Ca2+, SO4 2- , Mg2+ and S2O3 2- have been surmised to have an impact on the action of flotation reagents such as collectors (Ikumapayi et al, 2012). Xanthate collectors are known to play a significant role in imparting hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces to enhance their flotation. The interaction between minerals and xanthates is well known to be electrochemical in nature. Such redox processes may be elucidated by electrochemical techniques. Since the mechanisms involving the interactions between electrolytes in process water with sulfide minerals and the subsequent adsorption kinetics of collectors are not well understood, this study therefore aims to provide fundamental knowledge to unpack the mechanisms involved when electrolytes interact with Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and how these interactions may affect xanthate adsorption. The interaction of sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) in the presence of electrolytes at increasing ionic strength was investigated by rest potential measurements, to explain the impact of electrolytes on the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs in the flotation process. Rest potential measurements for PdTe2 and PdS were conducted in an air saturated 0.05 M di-sodium tetraborate decahydrate solution, in the absence and presence of SIBX and electrolytes. It was found that the existence of sulfide and telluride on palladium affects the mechanisms in which electrolytes interact with Pd mineral surfaces. An increase in the ionic strength of Na2S2O3, CaCl2 and MgCl2, increased the interaction between the salts and PdS, thus decreasing the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdS. An increase in ionic strength for Na2S2O3 increased the interaction between Na2S2O3 and PdTe2 and therefore decreased the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdTe2. Other salts investigated in this study increased the rate of oxidation of PdTe2 with an increase in ionic strength thereby enhancing the interaction of SIBX and PdTe2. This study has shown that mineral type, electrolyte type and concentration all have an impact on the mechanisms that result in the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs.

Newcrest’s Cadia concentrator operated from 1998 to 2012 with a traditional SABC grinding circuit treating Cadia open pit ore. The Cadia comminution circuit was well characterised through surveys and data that are available in the public domain, and became a benchmark standard for the industry and practitioners modelling large SAG mill based circuits. In 2012, the HPGR-based crushing circuit was introduced in front of the SAG mill to increase throughput when treating the Cadia East ore that was derived from an underground block cave. This ore was expected to be more competent and have a coarser run-of-mine size distribution.Numerous previous papers have described the design and commissioning of the Cadia HPGR-based circuit.This paper describes the improvement in comminution energy consumption resulting from the introduction of the HPGR, including identifying the impact of process complexity and an increase in ancillary energy consumption for conveyors, screening, and crushing.CITATION:Lane, G S, Seppelt, J and Wang, E, 2018. "In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. This paper provides an overview of Newmont’s diverse comminution circuits, discusses recent performance and offers some insight into optimisation and design considerations based on recent experience in both endeavours.Citation:Giblett, A and Hart, S, 2016. Brief summary of results obtained by a French-Japanese cooperative study on the bottom of trenches around Japan. The geophysical prospection, multi beam echo sounding and direct observation with submersible dives of the trench bottom clarified the details of the subduction of oceanic plates. It may be noted, among many new facts found: 1. The subduction and geologic structure resulted from the process is different according to the nature of subducting oceanic plate, and the geology of the land behind the trench. Thus the Nankai trough characterized by the developpement of accretionary prisms is contrasted to that of the Japan Trench where the basement rocks are exposed on the land side cliff of the trench wall. 2. The compressional tectonic situation prevailing in the trench bottom provokes the venting, along the fissures on the bottom, of water contained in sediments. Hydrocarbons contained in the sediments are comming out with water and give nutrients for bacteria. Clams, tube warms, sea slugs and shrimps are taking these bacteria as their food and biological communities with exceptionally dense population for the deep sea of more than 3000 meters in depth are formed on the field of accretionary prism and wall of the land side cliff. 3. An intense compressional tectonic field resulted from the subduction is inducing the transition from the subduction of oceanic plate to the collision of a part of the plate to the continental plate.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

In recent years, due to advances in designing of various magnet assemblies, a wide range of magnetic materials with different properties can be concentrated. Jalal Abad iron ore beneficiation plant, which is located in Iran, Kerman province, is currently producing iron ore concentrate with the capacity of 0.8 Mt/a by having medium intensity magnetic separators (MIMS) with rougher and cleaner stages that finally leads to the production of an iron concentrate with the Fe grade of about 65 per cent. In this plant, the rougher tailings directly goes to the thickener as the final tailings and cleaner tailings feeds to the ball mill for regrinding. Since some hematite particles with weak magnetic properties cannot be recovered from only these two stages of magnetic separation, the obtained tailings from this concentration plant has approximately an iron grade of 25 per cent to 27 per cent. Accordingly, laboratory processing tests were conducted on the obtained representative sample of the final tailings. Based on the experimental results performed on final tailings, a new magnetic drum separator with a specific magnetic assembly was designed that could finally lead to product with iron grade range of 58 per cent to 60 per cent with relative and total weight per cent of 8.6 per cent and 3.86 per cent. Finally, it could be concluded that feeding of magnetite particles to the existing drum separators, due to their high magnetic field intensity, cannot efficiently lead to improvement of the grade of concentrate. Therefore, pilot magnetic separation tests were done on the final concentrate for evaluation of product upgrading probability. Consequently, by increasing another stage of cleaning and by decreasing the magnetic field intensity, the final product grade could be enhanced from 65 per cent to 67 per cent.

The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

In this study, the use of carbon neutral biochars as reducing agents in the pyrometallurgical treatment of nickel slag was investigated at 1400°C in order to recover valuable elements such as copper and nickel from the slag. A large amount of slag is generated during the nickel matte smelting. Nickel slag contains valuable elements such as copper, nickel and cobalt, which can be recovered. Disposal of this slag results in loss of resources and may cause pollution of the environment. It is important to retrieve these metals for environmental and economic reasons. In this study, the slag was reacted with non-fossil reducing agents (biochar) which were produced from hydrolysis lignin and black pellet biomass pyrolyzed at 600 and 1200°C and with metallurgical coke for comparison. The reduction experiments were done at 1400°C for 15, 30 and 60 mins under inert gas atmosphere. The samples were quickly quenched and analysed with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The results showed that the use of biochar resulted in faster reaction kinetics in the reduction process compared to coke. The fast reaction kinetics is attributed to the relatively high content of volatiles in this biochar, leading to gas formation and thus mixing of the sample material. Moreover, thermodynamic modelling was also performed using FactSage™ to simulate equilibria with different amounts of biochar. The metal to slag distribution coefficient calculated from the results of thermodynamic modelling were consistent with experimental results. In addition, thermodynamic calculations confirmed that nickel is reduced rapidly and it deports to the metal alloy phase. As the reduction progresses or extra reductant is available for reactions, more iron is deported to the metal phase. The calculations also revealed that Zn vaporises into the gas phase.

This study demonstrates the application of HyLogging™ technologies for mineralogical characterisation of different iron ore types throughout the Hamersley Province (Western Australia), including a channel iron deposit (Murchison Metals Ltd) and bedded iron deposits in the Brockman and Marra Mamba Iron Formations (BHP Billiton Ltd).Drill core from these deposits was analysed using CSIRO’s hyperspectral drill core logging systems (HyLogging systems), which are commercially available at the AMDEL and AMMTEC laboratories in Perth (Western Australia), through a leasing agreement. These HyLogging systems provide high resolution photographs at 0.1 mm pixel resolution as well as visible and infrared spectroscopic refl ectance data at 1 cm spatial resolution. The minerals identified include haematite, goethite and its subtypes (ie vitreous and ochreous goethite), AlOH-clays (kaolinite, Al-smectite and white mica), carbonates, gibbsite, chlorite, amphibole and hydrated silica as well as water content. The abundance and composition of these minerals was established from the spectral data and was validated against XRF analyses.The full potential of HyLogging systems in the iron ore industry is only starting to be unveiled, but some major benefits have already been demonstrated:• HyLogging systems can delineate different ore zones by mapping the vitreous and ochreous goethites. This has a potentially large impact in mine planning and operations, as hard, vitreous goethite and soft, powdery, ochreous goethite have different processing characteristics that can affect plant throughput if not carefully managed.• HyLogging mineralogy can also be used to support stratigraphic interpretations of the host, for example in subdividing the Dales Gorge 1 - 4 submembers of the Brockman Iron Formation.• HyLogging can have a potentially signifi cant impact on waste rock characterisation, as many of the waste materials can be identifi ed and quantifi ed with hyperspectral data (eg clay-type,• hydration state).• HyLogging can provide accurate three-dimensional (3D) mineralogy to iron ore companies that will empower them to improve future exploration and resource planning.• Application of high resolution photography to further improve ore deposit domaining is also to be considered.

In the flotation of fine particles, problems arise which do not occur with coarse-ground pulps. For example, the presence of colloidal or near-colloid- al gangue particles gives rise to ex- cessive entrainment in the froth, with reduced grade as a consequence. If the values themselves are finely dissemi- nated, the recovery usually decreases as the particles diminish in size, so a low recovery is combined with poor grade. Sutherland and Wark (1955) referred to the complications arising from the presence of fines, indicating (p.382) that fine grinding "introduces diffi- culties that have not yet been satis- factorily overcome". At the time of writing, very little work has been done on fines flotation specifically, yet the groundwork has been well laid. The availability of better scientific instruments, together with the general advance of understanding in a wide variety of relevant research fields, has taken us a long way toward finding the reasons behind the problems as- sociated with fines, and also toward finding practical solutions. It would be useful to define what is meant by "fine" particles before going further. To some extent, the definition is somewhat elastic as far as flotation is concerned, because the density of the particles has a bearing on whether or not they act as fines. But in general we are dealing with particles less than about 20 pm in Diameter.

Any future developer of underground mining on the Bendigo goldfield will need to understand the unique geology and gold occurrence of this field. The development and sloping system employed will be primarily designed around these unique features. Modern techniques and equipment used in narrow vein mining will be applicable in this situation.The purpose of this paper is to examine the important geological features of the field as well as the known historical occurrences of the type of gold deposition in the ore bodies. This information will point to a system of development and extraction which will accommodate these features.

In September 1988 the Imperial Smelting zinc - lead blast furnace at Avonmouth England, was uprated from its then 52 week annual rated capacity of 90 000 tonnes/year of furnace zinc to 110 000 tonnes. In order to provide sufficient extra feed the sinter plant was likewise uprated in April 1989 by increasing the blowing rate of the sinter/acid plants from 100 000 to 120 000 Nm3/h, effectively a 20 per cent increase. In the 12 months after the uprate zinc production was only 85 000 tonnes. Two years after the uprate zinc production had increased to 100 000 tonnes, but it was not until January 1992 that a rolling 12-month zinc production of 110 000 tonnes was consistently achieved. This paper describes the problems encountered with the uprate and how they have been or are being overcome. It deals chronologically with events starting with the restart of the ISF at the end of 1988 and covers the following issues and their resolution: 1. Initial shortages of sinter due to an offset in uprate timing. 2. Greater difficulties in operating the larger furnace particularly on start-up, the greater tendency for iron production and serious slagging problems. 3. Coincidental timing of deleterious trends in slag chemistry. 4. Refractory problems in the furnace shaft and condenser. 5. Shortages of sinter due to commissioning problems with the wet gas and sinter tip end fans, and difficulties in obtaining sufficient sinter hardness. 6. Unrealised full benefits of the sinter-acid uprate due to a late change in design to dispense with sinter gas recirculation, but offset by successful use of oxygen. In a planned maintenance stop in September 1992 further improvements to the furnace design were carried out to resolve the refractory problems, and with improvements to the sinter plant the furnace zinc output capacity is planned to rise to a rate of 120 000 tonnes/year within two years.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore from sublevel open stopes annually. Extraction of the narrow, steeply dipping silver-lead-zinc orebodies requires a strategy quite different to that used in the massive copper orebodies. A range of blasthole diameters, explosive types and initiation systems gives the flexibility needed to adapt open stoping to a variety of situations. Hole diameters from 70 mm to 200 mm are being used, with lengths of up to 100 m common for the latter.

This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. The New Zealand Minerals Industry Association was incorporated as the NZ Mineral Exploration Association in 1982, with a membership that consisted of the gold exploration companies then active in New Zealand . As its membership broadened, it changed its name to the Mining and Exploration Association in 1994, and more recently the Minerals Industry Association. It is a non-profit-making incorporated society relying on voluntary membership, and is not funded by industry levies.   It has employed a full time executive director since 1988 when Robyn Ross was appointed, followed by John Pfahlert (1991 - 1996) and now with Doug Gordon managing the Association.   The Association is one of a number of organisations that represent the mining industry in New Zealand. Others include the Coal Association of NZ (CANZ), the Aggregate and Quarry Association (AQA), The West Coast Commercial Gold Miners Association and Minerals West Coast.   NZMIA membership comprises the main exploration and mining companies that account for over 80 per cent of New Zealand Æs mine output, and nearly all of its exploration investment. Its membership has expanded from gold exploration to encompass exploration and mining companies active in coal, gold, aggregates and industrial minerals.   The Association has developed a National Minerals Strategy that determines its priorities, implemented via a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee. This group was established six years ago to advise the Associate Minister of Energy on issues relating to the long term development of the minerals sector in New Zealand.
