With the increased focus on the need for more uranium mines, this paper presents the design process currently underway for the development of the Millennium deposit in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. This deposit, located 630 - 750 m below surface, will be accessed by two shafts and will be mined by blasthole stoping methods at less than 500 t/d. Mining grade will approximate two per cent U3O8 and mine life is expected to be six to seven years. The project is a joint venture between Cameco, AREVA and JCU. This paper discusses in detail methods used to predict worker radiation exposures, the methods used to monitor the work environment and procedures unique to the uranium industry necessary to minimise worker radiation exposures.

Sustainable development is a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The topic is necessarily broad and complex, covering an entire spectrum of related areas, from geology to end-use products. The objective of this keynote address is to focus on the chemicals and chemistry aspects - especially research and technology transfer - in sustainable mineral processing. Chemicals came to play a critical role in mineral processing during the last century, and they will play an equally vital role in confronting the sustainability challenges of the 21st century, particularly in the areas of greener chemicals, water efficiency and water resource management; waste reduction and remediation; minimising environmental impact, safety and health risks (meeting and exceeding the requirements of regulations); energy efficiency; and converting mineral resources into reserves. This keynote address argues that the current research framework is no longer adequate to serve the goals of sustainable mineral processing. The problems studied are often too narrowly defined or irrelevant, while the research efforts are fragmented and the methods and approach employed are often too reductionistic to produce useful knowledge. A new framework for research is needed. This address further argues that a new framework based on a holistic or systems approach can best tackle the challenges of sustainable mineral processing. Central tenets of this approach include a recognition that, in complex systems, the behaviour of the whole system is more than the sum of the individual contributions, and that interactions occur in real time, often in subtle and complex ways. The focus is thus on the behaviour of the whole system. Indeed, a comprehensive understanding of the system through large-scale measurements should precede a study of parts or of idealised models of the complex system. The result will be a sound knowledgebase, better solutions to the challenges of sustainable development, and improved technology transfer. Developing such a framework will pose a formidable challenge, requiring significant time and effort as well as a confluence of diverse specialties and strategic collaboration. Fortunately, recent developments in the context of reagent optimisation provide us with a prototype of a holistic approach. We can also draw upon methodological innovations in the biological sciences, where the critical need for a systems approach is well recognised and significant advances have been made.

Gold is often present in solid solution with pyrite in the Carlin Trend. The presence of organic carbon along with gold hosted in sulfide, referred to as double refractory ore, requires that ore with high carbon-in-leach (CIL) preg-robbing potential and poor leach recovery is routed to a roaster. During roasting, the pyrite is oxidised to (ideally) form hematite (Fe2O3), and the gold that was present as solid solution in the pyrite forms colloids within the hematite. The ideal texture of the produced hematite is porous to allow for the penetration of cyanide for gold dissolution. Temperature and other conditions of roasting, as well as ore characteristics (pyrite mineral associations, arsenic) can affect the texture and the type of iron oxide formed. Many of these alternate iron oxide minerals result in incomplete leaching. Comprehensive gold deportment studies have proven that the majority of the gold losses in Barrick GoldstrikeÆs roaster leach tailings occur within the iron oxides created through the roasting process.The iron oxide phase that hosts the majority of the gold in tailings is in the form of by-product maghemite (?Fe2O3), which is highly magnetic. Barrick Goldstrike has designed a magnetic recovery circuit to capture these iron oxides, and with subsequent reprocessing, recover the lost gold. Pilot plant results and analysis using scanning electron microscope mineral liberation analyser (SEM MLA) shows that up to 30 per cent of the gold in tailings can be recovered with a three per cent overall mass pull to magnetic concentrate. This magnetic concentrate can be economically reprocessed, resulting in a three per cent improvement in roaster recovery.CITATION:Douglas, W and Semenyna, L, 2013. The Ebor Volcano in north eastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19 - 20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2 - 19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (~48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at ~19.0 - 19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichmentof SiO2, SFeOlMgO, alkalies and HFSE.

Within the first full year of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine operation, the Lake Cowal Foundation Limited (LCF) has already been delivering results consistent with its goal to protect and enhance the natural environment of Lake Cowal and its catchment area. The LCF is a non-profit Environmental Trust established in June 2000 in conjunction with the development consent process for the construction of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine. Its primary goal is to protect and enhance Lake Cowal, a nationally significant ephemeral wetland located 350 km west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Significant concentrations of water birds visit the lake and the Australian Heritage Commission listed Lake Cowal on the Register of the National Estate in 1992. The LCF is managed by a Board of Directors from representative member organisations including the Total Environment Centre, National Parks Association, Nature Conservation Council and Barrick Australia Limited. Although largely funded by Barrick, the Foundation also attracts external funding and works in partnership with a diverse range of other groups and organisations, beyond the mine fence. The total value of currently approved projects is estimated to be in excess of $7.1 million, which includes æin-kindÆ contributions made by the local community and in particular the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority (LCMA) and local farmers. To date, LCF has been involved with the development and implementation of 30 projects with a total of 34 project partners. LCF has worked with over 60 landholders to improve Lake Cowal and its catchment, with 6180 ha of land now being managed for conservation or sustainable farming in the local area. Many landholders have been, or are involved in property planning or participating in other training opportunities. Sustainability of LCF programs and outcomes will be assured by commitments to projects within four key themes: conservation, research and research support, sustainable farming and community education and training. The LCF works independently from the mining company and has no responsibility for the environmental management within the mining lease. It is about capitalising resources generated by the mine to enhance environmental outcomes in the wider Lake Cowal catchment area by working collaboratively with the local community, industry and government authorities to ensure the long-term protection of a unique wetland ecosystem affected by landscape scale degradation.

Fragmentation is one of the most relevant parameters in the design and operation of a mine using the caving mining method. Fragmentation affects all subsequent operations, including extraction, comminution processes, secondary blasting and transportation.There are a number of different models in the literature to estimate the size of the ore fragments that report to the drawpoints; however, there is still no industry consensus about which one to use. This paper proposes a new model for predicting the fragmentation reporting to the drawpoints that is based on the geotechnical unit characteristics, extraction height and column of primary ore. Distinguished guests ladies and Gentlemen. As many of you know, before I became a Labour Member of Parliament, I had an unusual career path for a politician, in that I spent quite a few years working in the business community. In other words, I was mainstreamed before I was institutionalised. Given that some of this time was spent working for the then Macraes Mining Company Limited, now Gold and Resource Developments NL, I feel that I may have a perspective on how things are seen, on both sides of the fence. In terms of public perception and esteem I am not sure which career option was the step up and which was the step down. So far what I have found very familiar, is that in both roles there is a gulf between the reality and the perception of that reality - a gulf that is both huge and hard to bridge. I think it is a point worth making here amongst another busy industry cluster, that we can all too easily get so embroiled in the day to day activities, that we lose sight of how this might look to those running on a different treadmill. I can still remember scratching my head at the beginning of some days, as I worked to get new mining projects started that I knew were going to bring real jobs and economic benefit to New Zealand, but ending the day feeling like I may instead have been proposing bringing back both strip mining and slavery. If I learnt one valuable lesson out of that time it was this: .... mining has become so publicly demonised on the road to ecological nirvana, that even attempting a lucid dialogue on mining issues, with some, is incredibly difficult.

The installation of the Flotation Capacity Project flow sheet in the copper concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The project involved increasing the flotation capacity with Wemco tank cells and Jameson cells as well as changing the copper cleaner circuit layout. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion had significant involvement from operational, maintenance and technical personnel adopting the same approach as the highly successful George Fisher project in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at MIM. The involvement of people familiar with the concentrator allowed for smooth integration of the changes into an operating concentrator with minimal downtime. Detailed circuit analysis over many years identified opportunities for improvements in the flotation circuit for both grade and recovery. This paper describes the program of work that led to the Copper Concentrator Flotation Capacity Project, and the implementation of the circuit expansion and flow sheet changes that resulted in an overall improvement in the circuit recovery.

Within the last decade, major research discoveries have been made in the submarine realm of magmatic and hydrothermal activity of arc-backarc systems in the southwestern Pacific. These include identification of numerous particulate-poor, gas-rich (CO2-CH4) hydrothermal plumes emanating from arc front volcanoes, actively forming porphyry-copper-gold style mineralisation, and new backarc spreading systems erupting alkali basalt-trachyandesite magmas. Major goals of these studies have been identification of modern analogs to ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide ore bodies, and quantification of the volatile fluxes though supra-subduction zone systems.

There are several well-known, extensively researched and tested methods of suppressing a coalmine methane and coal dust explosion. The choice of method used is dependent on the legislative requirements of each country, which in turn are influenced by mining conditions in that jurisdiction. For example, seam gas content and the dustiness of the coal will combine to create the hazard, while the physical and chemical properties of the seam might influence the possibility of ignition sources such as frictional ignitions. The mining method and layout will also influence the choice of preventative or proactive suppression devices. The decision as to which method is approved and adopted should be based on currently tested and available technology and the latest research outcomes, and should be subjected to a rigorous risk assessment, since a methane explosion propagating into a coal dust explosion cannot be countenanced.Every new technology must undergo stringent tests and these tests must be certified by accredited research facilities or laboratories. Upon approval, an explosion suppression system or the critical components of such a system should be tested in a more realistic environment. This environment can ideally be found in an operating underground mining section for evaluation purposes. Based on the insight gathered in such an environment, a realistic evaluation of the effectiveness of a potential system can be carried out. The explosion suppression system described in this paper has been tested on numerous occasions at accredited test facilities. The technology described in this paper has been used in various applications in underground coalmines and has been adapted to fulfil and exceed the requirements set out for methods currently in use. This paper describes the underground evaluation results of the latest technology in active suppression systems as used on continuous miners was adopted to perform as a roadway explosion barrier.CITATION:Spaeth, A, Belle, B and Phillips, H, 2017. The Favona low-sulfidation epithermal deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield is less than one kilometre southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The veins are hosted by Miocene andesite of the Waipupu Formation, have a total strike length of over 900 m, a vertical extent of at least 350 m and are on average 1-3 m wide. Individual veins have been traced for 200 m with vein widths up to 25 m. The dominant vein textures are massive, crustiform and colloform banded veins and vein breccias, with subsidiary textures including comb, zonal, flamboyant, lattice-bladed, ghost-bladed, microbotryoidal, feathery, ripple and dune, and mosaic. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral in the veins at Favona. Accessory gangue minerals include pyrite, chlorite, adularia, illite, calcite, and apatite. Electrum is the only gold-bearing mineral and is associated with acanthite, tetrahedrite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and rare galena. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that gold grades correlate with textures/vein types. The highest gold and silver grades are associated with vein breccias and banded veins, with the former containing 28 g/t Au and 136 g/t Ag on average. To date, veins with significant base metal sulfide minerals, and massive and crystalline quartz veins lack significant precious metals (Au and Ag), except for one banded base metal sulfide-rich vein at Favona. An overall zonation of the veins exists, with base metal sulfide minerals dominant at depth (1050 m RL) of the system are characterised by massive quartz veins.Fluid inclusions from a total of 31 quartz, amethyst, and platy calcite veins reveal homogenisation temperatures of ~190-250¦C, with final ice melting temperatures between 0.0 and -0.8. Ice melting temperatures correspond to apparent salinities of 18O value of the water that formed these veins is approximately -4.3 per mil, which is similar to meteoric water-dominated, near neutral chloride fluids in geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

A research project was commissioned by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) to improve the understanding of tailgate strata mechanics and to provide a more rigorous engineering basis for tailgate support design. A deformation mechanism termed æskew roofÆ was defined which relates the regional influence of differential horizontal strata movement (shear) about longwall extraction to gateroads. Confirmation of the mechanism was achieved by field investigations which included measurement of the shear displacement along weak interfaces. Under geological and mining conditions where the skew roof mechanism operated, strata units were found to move progressively further towards the goaf with height into the roof. 3D numerical modelling was used to assess the major geotechnical factors controlling the mechanism and to determine appropriate support strategies within a æskew roofÆ environment including the role of cables versus standing supports. The skew mechanism is considered relevant to; all roadways in the vicinity of longwall extraction including the faceline itself, chain pillar design, and support design.

With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.
