In multiphase ternary diffusion studies, plots of the variation bf the composition on the isotherm constitutes one of the most effective methods of presenting experimental results, especially if such plots are made in a manner which relates the composition path on the isotherm with the diffusion layer structure in the couple. Unfortunately, if different conventions for plotting are used serious misinterpretations occur readily, causing apparent disagreement between investigators who actually share the same viewpoint. A common convention for mapping these diffusion paths is needed at this time because with the increasing use of the electron-probe X-ray microanalyzer, a much greater number of ternary diffusion studies can be expected in the near future. In an effort to prevent unnecessary confusion in the future litera- ture, a convention for these plots is proposed, as outlined below. A hypothetical example of the use of these conventions is given in Fig. 1 where the path of composition through the diffusion structure of the 100 pct A/50 pct B, 50 pct C couple is plotted on the appropriate isotherm of the ABC system. The lower case letters relate the region in the diffusion layer structure to the appropriate composition on the ternary isotherm. 1) The diffusion path is plotted on the isothermal section corresponding to the diffusion temperature of the couple. 2) The terminal compositions of the plotted diffusion path are the initial compositions of the couple halves—provided infinite boundary conditions are maintained. If, in either couple half, infinite conditions are not maintained, then the path terminates at the composition of the exterior surface of the couple. If, at this surface, the composition varies with time or if the plotted path is time dependent, then the diffusion time should be noted beside the plotted path. 3) A solid line crossing a single phase field (e.g., line a-b in Fig. 1) denotes an existing layer of that phase in the diffused couple. 4) A dashed line crossing a two-phase field parallel to the tie lines (e.g., line g-h) represents an interface between the two phases with interfacial compositions designated by the ends of the tie-line. The line represents no spatial extent. 5) A solid line crossing a two-phase field so as to cut tie lines (e.g., line b-c or line j-k) represents a locally equilibrated columnar two-phase layer. The solid line should cut those tie lines which correspond to the lateral interfacial equilibria along the columnar

The characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previosly ously in the literature.' This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors1 previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (I) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calciurn-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. Once again, a history of sand-free production dictated the use of 60-mesh gravel flow packed liners. The Upper and Lower Tar

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more TiO2 than the formula FeTi03 would indicate, and some Fe2O3. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates. (') The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amaphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide. Other studies(2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal pr0cesses.(3,4,5 Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering. (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived. (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions. ETCH FIGURES ON ILMENITE CRYSTAL PLANES A rather large ilmenite crystal from Sannidal, Norway, about 11/2 x 11/2 x 2 inches, bearing a few natural faces with imperfect surfaces, was prepared for etching by grinding and polishing crystal planes whose Bravais-Miller indices (referred to hexagonal axes) had been determined by X-ray methods to be 00.1, 10.0, and 10.2. Metallographic examination showed that the crystal was homogeneous, and uniform in orientation, except for the presence of twin lamellae which were oriented with their broadest surfaces parallel to the 00.1 planes of the large crystal. Since ilmenite is rather inert to standard etch reagents, strong solutions of hot sulfuric acid and cold hydrofluoric acid were used. Preliminary tests established that better etch figures were obtained using HF than with H2So4 solutions. The etch figures produced on 00.1 and 01.0 planes of ilmenite by etching 3 to 5 minutes in cold concentrated HF solution are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. THE title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. DEFINITION OF MINERAL AGGREGATES "Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without portland cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. Mineral aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theoretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. EXPLORATION AND POSSIBILITIES OF DEVELOPMENT The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth's crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (1) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. DURING the last 10 years, several grain-growth studies have been made using zone-refined metals with controlled amounts of solute to elucidate the interaction of solute with moving boundaries. In all these studies, it was more or less implicitly assumed that the alloys used were, after recrystallization and grain growth, homogeneous within the grains with respect to solute and lattice defects. This note deals with observations made on microstructures originating from solidification of dilute alloys and from grain growth. Briefly, the experimental procedure used in these studies was the following: zone-refined cadmium and master alloys were melted and cast in Pyrex under vacuum to produce bars 14 mm in diam and about 150 mm long. These bars were cut into 8-mm-thick slices which were mechanically and chemically polished. The specimens were then deformed 30 pct in compression and given a 1-week anneal at 260°C in argon. After this anneal, a second deformation produced completely recrystallized samples 4 mm thick. The time-temperature controlled anneals were carried out in a bath of silicone oil. After the grain-growth anneal, the specimens were polished in Gil-man's' solution (33 g CrOs, 6 g NazSO, in 100 ml of water). Several etches were used depending on the alloy investigated, but mostly a mixture of concentrated HC1 and HNOj (98:2 vol) was employed. In all the alloys examined, the ease with which substructures could be revealed depended strongly on the crystallographic orientation of the surfaces of the grains. However, very frequently the microstructures to be discussed here etched up over broad areas comprising several grains. Fig. 1 is a micrograph of a Cd-0.05 at. pct Mg alloy annealed for 100 sec at 270°C. Different substructures are seen in this photograph. A denotes the now existing grain boundaries. The well-defined lines and points marked B are the remains of a solidification substructure. The lines are boundaries between cell colonies, and the points are nodes located on regular two-dimensional cells. This cellular structure has the same appearance as that found by weinberg2 for rapidly quenched Zn-Au alloys. The "ghost boundaries", marked C, are very similar in appearance to a grain boundary array in a polycrystalline sample. Repeated polishing and etching showed that all the substructures observed were three-dimensional. To date, the ghost boundaries have been clearly observed in all samples containing 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, and 1 at. pct Mg, and in samples containing 0.01 at. pct Zn. Attempts to outline these ghost boundaries in cadmium alloys containing 0.01 at. pct Ag and Au were only partially successful. In these alloys, parallel lines, having a resemblance to the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Mg and Cd-Zn alloys, were observed, but it was not possible to obtain complete arrays of ghost boundaries which extended over several grains. It is possible that a different etch than that presently employed would reveal the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Au and Cd-Ag alloys as clearly as in the Cd-Zn and Cd-Mg alloys. A close examination of the ghost structure showed that it consisted of linear etch-pit arrays, Fig. 2. The ghost boundaries were resolvable even in grains which showed over-all faceting due to the etching, as seen in the corner of Fig. 2. The general appearance of the ghost structure suggests that it originated during grain growth. This is supported by the observation that the mesh width in the ghost-boundary array generally increased with increasing final grain size. To test whether the ghost structure was formed during the long homogenizing anneal or during the grain-growth anneal, some as-cast samples were deformed and given a grain-growth anneal. Gardner[$] THE present known petroleum reserves are limited, and unless important new fields are discovered the Nation will be dependent, in the not too distant future, upon imports or upon synthetic liquid fuels to supplement domestic petroleum supplies. As a national defense measure, it would appear desirable to develop a substitute source of liquid fuels within the borders of the country if new discoveries of petroleum should prove disappointing. Congress undoubtedly had this in mind when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944). The act directed the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate demonstration plants for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and oil shale, and from forestry and agricultural products. As a part of this program, the Bureau of Mines has built a demonstration plant at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., for retorting the oil shale, and has developed a mine to supply the plant with oil shale. At the beginning of mining operations, the physical qualities of the oil shale, which would have a bearing upon the selection of mining methods and practices for exploiting the deposits, were largely unknown. A comprehensive mining-research program has been set up to determine the best methods and practices to follow to obtain the lowest overall practicable mining cost for producing the oil shale on a large scale. Unusually low mining costs will be necessary for shale oil to be produced commercially. Consideration now is being given to exploiting a series of flat-lying beds 70 ft thick by a room-and-pillar method of three benches with the advance heading at the top. This report is one of a series giving the results obtained in research on mining problems. INTRODUCTION The structure and physical qualities of the oil shale indicate that the 70-ft interval of the oil-shale measure can be safely mined in open stopes; studies indicate that this method would be the most economical one to use.1 As labor will be a major item of expense, the largest equipment that could be operated efficiently in the workings would be required to obtain the lowest practicable mining cost. It was therefore desirable to know the maximum safe span of unsupported rooms and the size of pillars necessary to support the overburden. This paper describes the work done at the Columbia School of Mines Barodynamic Laboratory in determining the maximum safe unsupported roof spans and the minimum safe pillar dimensions for the oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo.

IN the development of the incandescent electric lamp one aim of the investigators has been to establish the fundamentals of lamp design, so that the performance of any new lamp may be accurately predicted. The study of the temperature relations in lamps has done much toward establishing these fundamentals. The outstanding differences are the filament form and the bulb shape. The ideal lamp is one in which the filament operates at a uniform temperature throughout its length. In practice, it is necessary to disturb this uniformity by the introduction of supports and terminals. The amount of cooling at the supports and terminals affects the over-all efficiency of the filament as a light producer. Production planning techniques, particularly a production scheduling model are proposed for use in taconite mining in Minnesota. Applications of the scheduling model, on a two-year mine plan, which evaluates the equipment involved, are detailed. Data and tables are included. INTRODUCTION Fifty years ago Walter Swart, a mining engineer investigating the Minnesota taconites for the Jackling interests, made this report: "There is no doubt in my mind that this taconite mining is a game worth playing and that it can be played to a successful finish. It seems now only a question of men, money, methods and details."' The prosperous industry envisioned by Swart and other taconite pioneers is today a reality. Its growth has been spurred by technological advances in mining and beneficiation, depletion of natural ore reserves, and improvement of the economic climate. However, the massive problems that were solved to make this development possible are only a foreshadowing of the questions of "men, money, methods and details" that will be encountered in the future. The increasing demands for higher quality taconite pellets have already forced producers to examine better methods of quality control for their operations. THE NEED FOR PRODUCTION SCHEDULING The maintenance of fairly constant crude ore characteristics is of major importance to mill quality control. Through careful mixing of ore from storage bins, the concentrator staff can partially reduce the deviations of the feed analysis from the analysis desired. However, the limited effectiveness of bin mixing systems has caused some mining companies to utilize large capacity blending piles to reduce grade variations. Although the analysis of material being reclaimed from such a pile is relatively uniform, raw materials still must be scheduled from the mine into the pile in such a manner that the average analysis of all material is close to the feed analysis prescribed by the mill. PRODUCTION SCHEDULING MODEL Minnesota taconite mining companies have used three analyses to estimate how a certain ore will react to concentration. These factors are the crude magnetic iron content of the ore, the iron content of the plant concentrate produced from the ore at a standard grind, and the grindability index of the ore. The actual laboratory tests used to determine these factors have been described by Apuli.2 These data are obtained from analysis of diamond drill cores, and are the established criteria used by mine planning engineers to formulate taconite production schedules. Variations in the grade of mine output should be controlled by any production scheduling system. However, to be truly practical, production scheduling methods must also consider many of the less tangible variables that affect mine operation. These include pit layout, available equipment, and ownership of ore leases. The number and scope of the variables inherent in this type of mine planning suggested that a computer simulation could be used to solve the problem. The preparation of information for use with a computer simulation program was the initial phase of this project. Meaningful data was developed from logs of diamond drill cores. Analyses were related to their respective areas of influence by means of mine maps, Fig. 1. The three assay variables and tonnages for each area were punched on cards. In addition to these values, a location code number was punched in the first eight columns of the cards. This code is explained as follows: Column 1 Bench number Column 2 Quadrant location as determined by mine reference lines Columns 3-5 East-west coordinate Columns 6-8 North-south coordinate The heart of any simulation techniques is a well engineered mathematical model. To develop a model for taconite production scheduling, the relationship between the three assay variables had to be established. Because changes in each analysis factor affect the mill circuits in different manners, a weighting system was used to determine the relative im-

The authors are to be congratulated for presenting the first comprehensive paper on the theory and practice of threshold pressure determination in connection with underground gas storage. It is of particular value since most previous experimental work on this subject has been proprietary to the commercial laboratories engaged in such testing and to their clients. This dlscussion is presented in amplification of the subject paper, not in criticism, and is based upon our experience with approximately 5,000 threshold pressure determinations. Our comments are directed primarily to the experimental procedures as described by Thomas et al. It should be noted that, while clay mineral-rich lithologies are the most common caprock materials, the samples used (Table 1) include low permeability sandstones and carbonates, but do not include shales or other formations in which clav minerals exert a dominant effect. While our experience on samples analogous to those investigated by the authors generally confirms their findings, we have found that even more rigorous experimental conditions must be imposed where clay minerals are the controlling factor. These additional conditions result from the well-known molecular character of the clay minerals themselves in which water is interlaminated with, and bonded to, silicate sheets, thus becoming an essential component of the molecule. In many clay minerals the character of the intersheet bonding, and thus the dimension of the lattice, is strongly affected by variations in the identity and concentration of cations present in the intersilicate water. On a supermolecular scale, adsorbed water films on particle or "flakes" of shale provide much of the cohesive force necessary to maintain mechanical strength. The thickness of these films is variable and inversely proportional to intergranular pressure within the dimensional limits involved in caprock investigation. The thickness of the intersilicate water layers may also be subject to pressure under some conditions. These considerations are reflected in several necessary modifications of the experimental procedures described by the authors. Two of these are, in our judgment and experience, of such importance that they cast real doubt on the validity of data obtained on argillaceous materials without their application. The very careful resaturation procedures proposed by the authors should give good results in connection with the relatively "inert" lithologies used in their experiments. Our experience suggests, however, that they would create more problems than they would eliminate if applied to argillaceous materials. 1. Drying of the sample at the temperature and for the duration indicated by the authors not only will dessicate the sample with consequent shrinkage cracking, parting along bedding planes, and even total disassociation in the case of fissile shales, but it may also alter the character of the clay minerals themselves — in some cases irreversibly. 2. Prolonged evacuation to 2 microns Hg further dessicates the sample and is even more effective in reducing the intersilicate water content. 3. Resaturation with water differing in pH or chemical content from that existing originally in the sample also serves to alter the nature of the sample, particularly its structure and strength. 4. Our experience has been that, even with the thorough precautions proposed by the authors, complete resaturation of very fine grained materials is rarely obtained. Yet our experience confirms the

In the solvent extraction process, also referred to as liquid-liquid extraction, the clarified uranium-pregnant sulfuric acid leach solution is contacted with an organic extractant dispersed in kerosene; the uranium enters the organic phase and associates itself with the organic extractants. Simultaneously an-ions or cations, as the case may be, leave the organic extractant phase and enter the aqueous phase. The two phases are then allowed to separate by virtue of their immiscibility. Based on the data available, a generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the sodium carbonate scrub liquor of acid leach uranium mills using secondary and tertiary amine extractants is presented, as is another generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the bleed stream of alkaline leach uranium mill circuits. Such economic appraisal as can be made at this stage of the development is also indicated. Molybdenum occurs in most uranium ores. Whether the uranium is solubilized by the acid leach route or by the alkaline leach process, some of the molybdenum present in the ore is solubilized along with the uranium. Molybdenum in uranium mill pregant solutions may cause processing difficulties, among which may be mentioned the poisoning of resins, the precipitation of organo-molybdenum complexes, or the build-up of molybdenum in recycle streams. While the uranium milling industry has been successful in applying measures to overcome the problems arising from the presence of molybdenum in the circuits, such measures nevertheless add to the cost of producing uranium yellow cake concentrate. Table I shows the analysis of typical uranium pregnant leach solutions. Uranium recovery by solvent extraction is presently practiced only in conjunction with acid leach circuits, and it may be noted that of about 16,000 tons of uranium ore daily processed by sulfuric acid leach, more than half of this tonnage follows the solvent extraction route. Uranium mills leaching ore with sodium carbonate-sodium bicarbonate solution (the so-called alkaline leach circuit) do not use solvent extraction. In this case the uranium pregnant solution is sufficiently pure to permit the direct precipitation of uranium concentrate with subsequent recycle of the alkaline leach solution. While solvent extraction procedures may be developed which are economically attractive for the alkaline leach uranium process, this has so far not been the case. The earlier uranium mill solvent extraction circuits used organo-phosphate extraction reagents, among which di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid was popular. It should be borne in mind that uranium in its sulfuric acid leach solution exists in an equilibrium involving uranium in both anion and cation forms: uo + 2S0 = [uo2(so4)2] For this reason uranium may be extracted by either cation extractors or anion extractors and this is likewise true of molybdenum. However, the organo-phosphate extractants also load ferric iron which is usually present in the uranium acid leach solution. For this reason, it is necessary to reduce this solution substantially to the ferrous state ahead of solvent extraction using organo-phosphate reagents. The amines, being anion extractors, selectively reject iron and thus render the iron reduction step unnecessary. In Part I of this work,1 equations of elasticity were formulated for transversely isotropic, axisymmetric, homogeneous, porous media exhibiting pore fluid pressure. Equations of elasticity and the thermal analogy method were used to determine transient horizontal, tangential, and vertical stresses and radial displacement in a semi-infinite cylindrical region when either a constant rate of pressure or a constant rate of flow is maintained at the wellbore. In this paper, the approach presented earlier is extended to finite reservoirs for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at the well bore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Results of this work show that radial and tangential stress gradients are high near the wellbore but diminish rapidt; away from the well; the vertical stress gradient behaves in the same way but is less severe. Radial stresses are compressive or neutral, whereas tangential and vertical stresses may be tensile, neutral or com-pressive, depending upon the boundary conditions, the physical Properties of the system and the radial distance involved (vertical stresses are always compressive in an unbounded system1. For constant boundary pressures, both radial and tangential stresses increase with time whereas they both decrease for a closed outer boundary and constant pressure at the wellbore. The vertical stress decreases with time for both systems. For steady-state systems, radial displacement may be positive or negative, depending upon the dimensions of the system, the pressure differential and the porosity. Radial displacement may be positive or negative for a closed outer boundary but is positive for constant pressures at both boundaries. INTRODUCTION The importance, utility and complexity of a realistic appraisal of the stress state at and local to a wellbore were indicated in Part I. In this paper the analytical approach presented earlier is extended to finite, cylindrical reservoir geometry for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at wellbore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Other than the outer boundary of the reservoir being finite, the physical system and assumptions pertinent thereto are the same as before. From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

This paper describes the unusual hazardous conditions encountered in mining thick, inclined coal beds under heavy cover in Carbon County, Utah. This description includes heavy roof conditions, sloughing ribs, steep pitches, and severe bouncing experience. Emphasis is placed on the top bench system of mining and development in the top half of a 16-ft seam, under the roof rock, which is bolted, and the recovery of the bottom coal on retreat; success of bolted roof and ribs; and shuttle car haulage on pitches up to 25%. The use of protective cages for operators of face equipment, the guarding of belt conveyor systems to prevent injury associated with deliberate entry, and the positive lockout of electrical equipment is described and illustrated. Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that in- fluence mining. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined conditions are met in the coal mines of the Columbia-Geneva Steel Div. of the United States Steel Corp., in southeastern Utah. This coal bed measures up to 16 ft in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 3000 ft. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colo. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest. It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development. THE use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Some-times the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its, burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance.

The Santa Rita copper deposit first served as a source of native copper for Indian implements and weapons. In 1801 Santa Rita copper, trans- ported by mule train to Chihuahua, began to be used commercially for making coins. It was a small- scale operation made difficult by Indian raids, transportation costs and depletion of the higher grade ores. There was, moreover, no known method for economically extracting copper from the under- lying low grade sulfide ores. Originally, copper and copper oxide ores were mined by underground methods, but there was virtually no development of the deposit-which became United States territory after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848-for almost a hundred years. A number of small underground mines had been started during that time, but it was not until 1873 that all the principal claims were consolidated under one control.
