SEVERAL serious accidents, which had occurred owing to the platman leaving the plat without first withdrawing the "chairs" from the shaft, set the writer scheming to devise a mechanically operated system which would obviate such accidents and be "fool-proof". It was obvious at the outset that some means of indicating to the engine-driver by the movement of the "chairs" themselves, whether they were "in" or "out" of the shaft, was necessary.An arrangement of signalling similar to railway semaphores was considered, but was rejected owing to the difficulties accruing from the large number of communicating wires which would be required down the shaft-viz., 2 for each level. After several experiments, a comparatively simple and efficient electrical system was devised, and which is covered by Commonwealth Patent TO. 10,402.One of the chief features of the apparatus is its simplicity, and its strongest point is the fact that both the engine-driver and platman receive visual indication of the position of the "chairs." The arrangement consists of a miniature coloured glow lamp, one for each level of each shaft compartment, arranged and placed beside the numbers and arrows corresponding to the various levels, on the winding engine indicators. Introduction This paper is a descriptive analysis of injuries and fatalities at small surface bituminous coalmining companies in Pennsylvania. The purpose of analyzing a specific industry sector and location is to identify issues that might be missed in a wider analysis. Other studies of small mine safety (e.g., Peters and Fotta, 1994, Randolph and Boldt, 1997) have shown that the relationship between safety and mine size is not a simple one. Some injury types occur at higher rates at small mines, while others occur at lower rates. Consequently, an analysis limited to a specific type of mining can help identify hazards and issues specific to that sector. The results of this analysis will be useful for directing training, intervention, and research efforts towards the most prevalent causal factors and incident types. Procedures and Definitions Data sources The primary sources of data for this analysis were files provided by MSHA containing information collected under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50. These files, commonly referred to as “Part 50 data”, are provided though MSHA’s Program Evaluation and Information Resources directorate. Two primary types of injuries were selected from the Part 50data: Fatalities (MSHA “degree of injury” code 1) and lost-time injuries, otherwise known as nonfatal with days lost (MSHA “degree of injury” codes 2 through 5). Lost-time injuries involve either actual days away from work or days of restricted activity or both. Fatality and lost-time injury incidence rates were calculated using the standard MSHA formula: Number of injuries per 200,000 employee-hours. Additional information on company sizes and mine ownership was provided by the Pennsylvania State University College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Time span A five-year time span was selected for this study. More than a single year of safety experience is usually needed to capture a broad range of incident types. Many types of injuries, especially fatal injuries, can be extremely rare, and may be missed if too short a time span is selected. However, a time span that extends too far back may begin to suffer historical threats to validity. That is, incidents that occurred several years ago may be caused by hazards that have since been remedied or may be related to mining practices and conditions that no longer exist. A five-year span offers a practical compromise between these two concerns. Consequently, the MSHA Part 50 data files from 1993 through 1997 were used. The 1997 file was in “preliminary” form at the time of the study, so small variations from the final 1997 “close out” file can be expected. Based on past experience, we do not expect the close-out variations to have a significant impact on the findings.

A systematic, detailed airborne geophysical programme carried out in the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) in 2005 by Glass Earth NZ Ltd culminated in the identification of 21 epithermal gold targets. In this paper we present the follow up ground-truthing results from the first target drilled, Tahunaatara (TAH).   The Tahunaatara target was identified by means of a multi-disciplinary integrated approach (ôdata interventionö) that defined and ranked the target as being highly prospective for epithermal gold mineralisation. A follow-up ground resistivity survey over the target area revealed the presence of a ôresistorö buried beneath an extensive cover of recent volcaniclastic material. Geochemical soil sampling carried out in conjunction with the resistivity survey yielded anomalous gold values.   The host unit at TAH consists primarily of flow banded rhyolitic lavas, volcaniclastic deposits and tuffs of the Ohakuri Ignimbrite with small outcrops of silicified bedded breccias forming local topographic highs. Results from the first orientation drill hole show wide zones of intense silicification, clay alteration and mineralisation. Sulphide mineralisation is disseminated throughout the core in association with hydrothermal replacement and also occurs in association with quartz veins and infill in fractures (sulphide-only veinlets as opposed to quartz + sulphide veinlets). Textural evidence from drill core indicates that hydrothermal fluid flow was multi-staged with potential for multi-stage gold, and other elements. The presence of polymictic hydrothermal eruptive breccias indicates a hydrothermal vent system.   Alteration varies from argillic to silicic, with pervasive adularia and vuggy silicification also present. Chlorite is minor and associated with quartz, illitic clay and adularia. Assay results currently available confirm the presence of anomalous gold values in association with zones of vuggy silica deposition and intense silicification.

This report, sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the impactor shaft sinking system in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the impactor system was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the impactor machine and its support systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates measures of both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the com¬ponent operations of the impactor shaft sinking system was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that the impactor shaft sinking system is safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by an average of over 35 percent with use of the impactor shaft sinking system. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of the impactor system include a revised fire suppression system, improved access to and from the operator cabs, reliable noise attenuation measures and improved communication systems. An operational safety manual was also developed for the impactor shaft sinking system.

The rock mechanics approach to stability problems of steep rock slopes dealt with in this article has particular reference to the concept and methods of analysis developed by the Salzburg, Austria, school of rock mechanics. These theories are based on the principal postulate of the anistropy of the technological properties of in-situ rock masses. The present approach, which is more in line with geological engineering concepts, differs distinctively from the soil mechanics and engineering geological concepts commonly practiced in the United States. PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING APPROACH TO GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVAILABLE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS At the present time two different concepts are available for engineering analysis of underground structures and foundations in different earth material: soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Of these two branches, soil mechanics is, after 40 years of initially revolutionary and more recently evolutionary development, well established. Its principal concept of replacing in-situ soils or rock masses by perfectly homogeneous substitues has resulted in many practicable methods of analysis which, if applied with judgement, have resulted in successful applications throughout the world. Conversely, rock mechanics is still in the early stages of revolutionary development. Few, if any, standard concepts or methods of analysis have been established. Opinions vary widely. At present the professional background of an investigator very often determines the engineering concept to be applied to a particular problem, rather than its actual requirements if considered objectively. This paper stresses the rock mechanics or geological engineering point of view advocated by the Salzburg group. A review of the soil mechanics concepts is considered beyond the scope of this paper. Lead-based alloys are the primary anodes used in electrowinning from sulphate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years, migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present day lead-calcium-tin alloys for copper electrowinning and lead-silver alloys for zinc electrowinning. It has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new alloys and production processes, the industry still has unresolved issues related to untimely corrosion which limits anode life and may lead to higher contaminant levels in the metal being produced. Lead anodes corrode because of the difference in the chemical/electrochemical potential across the microstructural features of an anode. Given a very high purity material, we find that the grain boundary areas corrode significantly faster than the rest of the grain. The desire to minimize grain boundary corrosion by a balance of alloying element selection and microstructural design allows the grain boundary area to be engineered. However, operational issues can lead to unexpected corrosion behaviours which we will discuss moving forward. The comments in this work, though directed toward copper electrowinning, can be extended to similar phenomena in other metals electrowon from sulphate media (i.e., zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese). The lifecycle of electrowinning anodes is dependent upon electrowinning tankhouse operating conditions and maintenance of the anodes, including cleaning and straightening. This paper will focus on the operational aspects of maximizing the utilization of lead electrowinning anodes.

Remediation of contaminated soil represents a significant market for application of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM). Eighty-one percent of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Program’s site remedies have involved contaminated soil. Contaminated soil is frequently treated by In-situ Solidification/Stabilization (ISS). ISS treatment of contaminated soil involves mixing binding agents into soil using DSM techniques. DSM is a core business for many DFI members. Members may improve and broaden their services to clients by learning about the recent ISS treatment of contaminated soil at a Superfund site. ISS treatment is part of the EPA-selected remedy for a Superfund Site in the metro New York City area. The property has seen heavy industrial use for more than a century. Soil at the site is contaminated with a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including coal tars and heavy metals, principally arsenic and lead. Beginning in 2017 and continuing through 2018, approximately 150,000 cubic yards (115,000 cubic meters) of soil will be treated by ISS at the case study site. Portland cement and slag cement are mixed into the soil by DSM techniques using GPS guided excavators to immobilize the hazardous constituents within the treated soil. ISS treatment by DSM will contribute to redevelopment of this valuable property. This paper will describe ISS constructability and performance, case study grout mix design with geotechnical results for strength and permeability, and deep soil mixing techniques. INTRODUCTION In-situ solidification and stabilization (ISS) is a deep soil mixing (DSM) technique applied in the environmental remediation field to physically encapsulate, or chemically bind, contaminates of concern such that the impacts to human health and the environment are mitigated. Common remediation applications of ISS include mixing cementitious reagents into contaminated soils to form a monolithic mass with desired performance characteristics, and the installation of vertical subsurface walls designed to control groundwater movement. A key characteristic of ISS is that the contaminated soils are treated in their existing location at the project site and then are left in place after treatment. Typical performance characteristics of the ISS treated soils include improved unconfined compressive strength (UCS), reduced hydraulic conductivity (HC), and reduced leaching potential of soil contaminants. Increased shear resistance of the treated soil may also be a performance requirement where seismic loading is a concern.

Construction vibrations may adversely affect surrounding buildings and their effects range from human discomfort and disturbance of sensitive devices to visible structural damage. There is no unique conclusion regarding the effect of construction vibrations at every site. Measurement is usually made to monitor vibrations and control them with the vibration thresholds for disturbance of sensitive objects as well as damage to structures. To prevent potential litigation and mitigate the vibration effects on sensitive devices, people and structures, it is necessary to manage and minimize vibration problems before the beginning of construction activities or installation of vibrating machine foundations, and during construction. Pre-construction damage survey and engineering vibration investigations, including the prediction of anticipating vibrations, have to be made at most construction sites in advance of construction activities. Vibration monitoring and control have to be provided during construction. The instrumentation feedback of vibration prediction, monitoring and control provide the basis for choice of measures to prevent or mitigate vibration problems and settlement damage hazards.

Sublevel stoping (SLS) is one of the oldest and most used methods for underground mining. It relies heavily on the use of drilling and blasting techniques to remove the rock, and gravity to transport the broken rock to drawpoints located at the base of the stope, with LHDs to transport material from the drawpoints. Current SLS operations are based on the assumption of stable geometry of the stope. Thus, the stope design includes the definition of the geometry according to the orebody shape and geomechanical constraints to avoid instability, which may cause excessive dilution. Under some circumstances, dilution could enter the stope due to geotechnical instability, especially when large stope geometries are used. A review of current design and planning practices for large SLS operations indicates that no consideration is given to the material flow and the mixing that occurs after blasting. Material flow could have a large impacton the mixing of ore when grades are heterogeneous in the stope. In this paper, we discuss the influence of gravity flow on the design and planning of large sublevel stopes with and without vertical dilution, based on laboratory experiments. The outcomes of this investigation are used todevelop guidelines towards the design and planning of large SLS mines, which would complement the currently used geotechnical considerations.

"Techniques were developed to determine the oxygen demand of sulphide ore pulps in the laboratory and in concentrators. The effect of variables which influence oxygen demand was studied, and it is shown that the oxygen demand is a measure of the degree of oxidation of the sulphide surfaces. It is suggested that in investigating the significance of oxygen in flotation, the oxygen demand of the pulp is a more suitable parameter than the dissolved oxygen content.Oxygen demand measurements are being carried out with a view to determining the effect of aeration on mill metallurgy and devising improved methods of predicting aeration requirements of sulphide ores.The importance of pulp oxidation in the flotation of massive sulphide ores has long been recognized. At the Noranda concentrator, chalcopyrite could not be floated satisfactorily without a pre-flotation aeration step because the necessary dissolved oxygen was consumed by the large amount of pyrrhotite in the ore. With aeration, pyrrhotite and pyrite were depressed by surface •oxidization, and the resulting thiosulphate level in solution gave a good indication of the end of useful aeration. 1'he present study was prompted by the need to find an alternative criterion for cases where recycled mill water may contain a relatively high concentration of thiosulphate. Preliminary experiments suggested that the rate of oxygen uptake by the pulp -its oxygen demand -might be a practical measure of the end point of aeration as well as a significant parameter in the flotation of massive sulphide ores.Although it has long been realized that oxygen is an important variable in flotation, analytical difficulties precluded detailed plant investigations. Measurements of' dissolved oxygen in mill pulps were first reported by Ralston(i) in 1929. A titration method was used, and because of the delay occasioned by the preparation of clear solution samples, the values obtained were believed to be low. It was quite evident, however, that pulps in the grinding circuit had a lower oxygen content than in flotation. More recently, Woodcock(2,3) used a polarographic probe to carry out oxygen surveys in six Australian concentrators and he generally observed a similar pattern. A large number of other solution parameters were monitored, such as pH, redox potential, reducing power, and reagent and metal concentrations, with the aim of detecting correlations among the measured variables. In this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigation, numerical modeling is used to evaluate the degree the pillar strength is increased with a rectangular pillar over a square pillar. Three-dimensional models are developed with pillar sizes and geometries typical of underground limestone mines in the United States. Physical properties for the models are based on geotechnical surveys of nearly 30 underground limestone mines. To examine the effects of pillar length on pillar strength with the modeling, a parametric study was conducted where the pillar width was held constant while the length and height were varied resulting in width-to-height ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 and width to length ratios ranging from 1 to 6. There are two aspects to pillar strength and failure. At relatively low stresses, pillars can fail as a result of geologic structure. At greater depths and sufficient extraction ratios, the pillars can also fail as a result of the vertical stresses exceeding the pillar strength. The effects of increasing pillar length regarding both strength aspects are presented in this study. Equations were developed for the increase in pillar strength with both height and length based on the model results. The results from these equations were compared to those from previously developed empirical equations for rectangular pillars. For the more slender limestone pillars with a width-to-height ratio below one, there is little increase in pillar strength for length-to-width ratios above 2 and almost no increase with length for a width-to-height ratio of 0.5. Only with the more squat pillars is there a significant improvement in strength with length. The gain in pillar strength with length for the pillars is explained by the change in the ratio of the area of the pillar affected by the ends to the area of the pillar. For the squattest pillar, the change in strength is also affected by an increase in pillar confinement along the central length of the pillar as the pillar transitions from a square to a long rectangular pillar. With geologic structure, added pillar length can significantly improve the pillar strength, depending on the strike of that structure with respect to the long pillar axis.

Background: Frictional ignitions continue to be a problem facing the U.S. underground coal mining industry. Many methane igni-tions are associated with the impact of mining machine cutter bits on quartzitic material (e.g., sandstone) during the coal-cutting process. Most ignitions result in small methane-air fireballs often only a few feet in size and limited to the cutter head location. However, under certain conditions, frictional ignitions can lead to larger methane explosions and/or fires with the potential for causing serious injury or death to the mining machine operator and other nearby miners. The requirements for a frictional ignition are a flammable volume of methane-air and an ignition source. This source is usually the hot streak caused by the frictional impact of the mining bit on hard rock, and the frequency of occurrence increases with increased bit wear. Another possible ignition source is the fric-tional impact of rock on rock during a roof fall.

Frontier/Traylor is presently completing construction of twin tunnels for the Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District of Oregon’s (Tri-Met) westside lightrail system. The tunnels are each 4,550 m (14,935 ft) in length and 6.48 m (21.29 ft) in diameter. The 1/3 of each tunnel was driven from the west portal using drill and blast methods and the remaining 2/3 was driven from the east portal using a TBM. The paper describes: The difficulties encountered by the TBM mining the weathered Columbia River Basalts. The execution of drill and blast work despite challenging ground conditions, stringent noise and vibrations specifications, and public relations problems. A pipeline syphon can be a simple and reliable alternative for water conveyance as compared to otherwise more complex pumping systems or low-level outlet conduits through earthfill dams. In a simple form, it consists of a pipeline constructed over the top of a dam or other high topographic feature, connecting a source pond to a receiving pond or channel (Fig. 1). The syphon action is initiated by removing air from the pipeline (priming) using water pumps, vacuum trucks, or simple devices that can be purchased “off-the-shelf.” Once primed, the syphon flow rate can be controlled or stopped using conventional gate, valve, orifice plate, or other devices. Repriming is not required even if the flow is stopped, provided the syphon was not drained. A limiting factor in considering a pipeline syphon as a design option is the maximum lift (i.e. vertical distance from source pond water level to summit of pipeline syphon) which is approximately 9 m or less, depending on pipeline syphon features and site conditions. A pipeline syphon can be quickly constructed from readily available materials including steel, concrete, polyethylene, or PVC pipe. It is particularly well suited to many of the unique conditions often encountered at mine sites. This paper identifies situations that can sometimes be best resolved using a pipeline syphon. It provides basic principles for pipeline syphon design and includes case histories of their successful application.

The Imhoflot G-Cell, a new development in the pneumatic flotation technology (which incorporates centrifugal forces in the separating vessel) is a recent innovation in the mineral processing world. The G-Cell was invented by Dr Rainer Imhof and commercialised by Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd. In a short time span a number of plants and units have been successfully commissioned in the mineral processing industry. In addition, a number of industrial G-Cell flotation plants are in the process of construction for the purpose of coal preparation and environmental remediation. In this paper two industrial installations have been highlighted together with a pilot plant test programme investigating ultra fine flotation recovery for a base metal operation.

LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. "The conversion of a concentrator from one grinding media type to another is a major undertaking in terms of both financial and technical risk. So, a strategy of completing sufficient laboratory and field tests to mitigate this risk, and give the operation confidence that advancing to plant trial will give a high probability for success.The objectives of this paper are twofold: to provide the reader with a strategy for mitigating risk prior to undertaking a plant trial; and to provide a statistical basis for analysing plant trial data. That is, when employing an electrochemically inert grinding media in the primary grinding circuit it is possible to change the pulp chemistry of the system and improve the metallurgical response of the ore.This paper tracks the changes in pulp chemistry and metallurgical performance of Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s silver/lead/zinc concentrator as the primary ball mill was converted from forged steel grinding media to high chrome grinding media. The changed in metallurgical performance are correlated to the shift in pulp chemistry.INTRODUCTIONTheoryBruckard et al (2011) recently published an article describe the effect of the grinding environment on the flotation of copper sulphides. While this paper confined its discussion to copper sulphides the arguments presented apply equally to other sulphide mineral systems. Broadly, these studies indicate that most sulphide minerals are more noble than the grinding media used during comminution. Therefore, the sulphide minerals are cathodic with respect to the forged steel grinding media, and the following reactions apply:Cathode (sulphide mineral): ½O2 + H2O + 2e- ? 2OH- (1)Anode (grinding media): Fe ? Fe2+ + 2e- (2)A galvanic couple between the grinding media and the sulphide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the forged steel media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulphide minerals thereby affecting their floatability (Johnson, 2002).The application of more electrochemically inert grinding media to “real” ore systems at an industrial level to improve metallurgical performance has not gained universal acceptance. The aim of this paper is to provide a protocol for conducting laboratory and plant test work that clearly demonstrate that metallurgical benefits are not only possible, but measureable, by way of example. Because the cutting and polishing of stones are parts of the work of the Bureau of Mines in its study of rocks and minerals and in the determination of specimens sent in for identification, it was decided that a circular covering the subject in a general way would be of practical interest. As several books and periodicals give details of the problems in cutting and polishing, this report will not duplicate their information more than necessary. THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.
