Mining Lease SML 57 was registered to Mount Kasi on 5 January, 1995. The Mount Kasi gold mine is located in Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island and operated from 1932 to 1946 producing 261,000t of ore at an average grade of 7.5g/t Au. The deposit represents a structurally controlled style of high sulphidation copper gold mineralisation with peripheral low sulphidation mesothermal vein type gold mineralisation. The resource consists of 1,048,000 tonnes of residual soils (eluvium) containing 1.9 g/t Au at 0.5 g/t Au cut off and 1,240,000 tonnes of hard rock at 3.0 g/t Au and 1.0 g/t Au cut. 94 drill holes, 298 auger holes and 85 pits were modelled to outline the resource. 29% of the pits bottomed in mineralisation and it is likely the full thickness of eluvium has been understated. The pit is scheduled to produce 500,000 tonnes of ore per annum to yield 35,000 ounces of gold with an initial 2 years of eluvial ore followed by a further 2 years of hard rock ore. Total capital costs are estimated to be less than 10.0 million dollars with construction planned to commence in 1995. The likelihood of locating further ore is high.

Purpose This is a unique project because the mining and tunneling industries have become highly mechanized and cannot normally accommodate a project where surface disturbance must be minimized or eliminated when there is less than 10 feet of ground cover. More traditional less mechanized methods must be employed and the skills and techniques for accomplishing the work have become all but non-existent. Therefore, this article highlights those areas of specialized skills and techniques. Methods The article will describe the design approach, the method(s) of ground support selected, the method(s) of excavation selected, the planning, scheduling and materials selection process. In addition, the article will describe the actual production characteristics and the results of the project. This approach will concentrate on productivities, adaptations to actual conditions and the quality of the end product. The design approach basically was to insure that the temporary support methods were adequate for the excavation and shoring stage of the project. The final concrete liner was designed using conventional structural design methods with the goal of constructing a tunnel that will last 100 years. The methods of support were spiling and variations of spiling in order to provide advance temporary ground support. In this project spiling is steel channel cantilevered and driven into the ground ahead of the working tunnel face which supports the ground allowing the face muck to be removed with overhead protection’. Conclusion This will be a discussion of the applicability of the methods. The actual performance of the excavation and shoring methods will also be evaluated. The final concrete liner completion results, the actual production rates and the conformance with budget and schedule will be addressed.

The analysis of subsidence due to the opening of an underground void (mining, water exploitation or civil works hole) is a problem usually hard to solve. First of all, it requires a predictive model, in order to define both the displacement magnitude and area affected by subsidence. Such model should be validated with measurements of the actual movements sustained on the surface, in order to adjust it properly and enable influence of future behaviour in a reliable way. Two different kinds of problems might arise. On one side, it is necessary to control and measure surface movements in a very exhaustive way during a long period of time, beginning before underground works take place and finishing years after they are over. Furthermore, three factors bring in errors, some times of magnitudes higher than the displacement magnitudes measured. These include: the fact that reliable and long-term information cannot always be achieved; the precision of measuring devices; and the design of the topographical network itself. In addition, the predictive models more widely used only apply to certain excavation geometries, mainly to horizontal holes. In light of this background, the Group of Rock Engineering, of the University of Oviedo Mining Department, has developed a working methodology and a specific software tool, Subsidence 3D, to estimate ground displacements and strains. The program will allow for predictive models to be defined and also allows the treatment of data related with topographical marks and its comparative analysis with calculated results. The software has been programmed using Visual C++. Graphical outputs however are generated using AutoCAD 2000. This paper mainly refers to a practical situation, an underground coalmine, remarking the main difficulties arisen during the study of the available information and proposing how to solve them. Design and construction of the Epping to Chatswood Rail Line tunnels in Sydney, Australia required an innovative approach to define hydrogeological properties of the Sydney Hawkesbury Sandstone and provided an insight into the hydraulic behaviour of fractured sedimentary rocks. To meet restrictive water inflow and infiltration criteria both the pre-treatment of zones of fractured or highly jointed rock, and waterproofing using an interior spray on membrane for the finished drained tunnels and stations was required. Methods typically used to address the interaction of groundwater and tunnels in the Sydney Basin are demonstrated by case histories from major design-build tunnel projects.

Tip post-grouting of bored pile (drilled shaft) foundations refers to a method where cementitious grout is injected beneath the tip of a shaft to improve the overall performance of the constructed foundation. This technique, when performed satisfactorily and in the appropriate ground conditions, enhances axial load-displacement performance by improving the mobilization of pile’s resistance. Potential benefits associated with tip post-grouting include reduced settlement under loading, better alignment of load transfer curves, and improved ground beneath the base of the bored pile. However, to be able to realize the benefits attributed to this method, the design, construction, of both the bored pile and the post-grouting system must meet a minimum level for quality assurance. The various factors affecting the successful installation and performance of a bored pile (e.g., workmanship, base cleanliness, borehole integrity, and concrete placement) have been discussed by numerous practitioners and researchers in the available technical literature. For a conventional (i.e., ungrouted) bored pile, acceptance is based on a combination of visual inspection, material testing, and the results of integrity and/or performance testing of the constructed pile. A properly executed tip post-grouting program can be a relatively comprehensive and complex process, which is typically evaluated throughout the construction process based on the results of prior projects and/or on test pile(s) at the particular site. For tip post- grouting programs, verification procedures and acceptance criteria should be established during and incorporated into the design process to ensure design intent and objectives are achieved. Project specifications should be produced to ensure performance requirements are achieved. This paper will present and discuss factors affecting the successful execution of tip post-grouting, including grouting criteria, instrumentation, reliability and uncertainty with the method and outcome, and verification and acceptance. INTRODUCTION Constructing bored piles (drilled shafts) is increasingly more challenging given the lack of ideal site locations, tight project site confines, difficult or restricted access, greater demands on drilling equipment, and close proximity to adjacent structures. To evaluate the feasibility of bored piles as an appropriate foundation system, a myriad of factors is evaluated during design, including site conditions and constraints, budgeting and scheduling, reliability and risk exposure, presence of and depth to adequate load bearing soils/rock, and the magnitude of the imposed loading. Moreover, updated design codes increased load demand per element, and improved material strengths have led to more complex foundation designs, larger foundation elements, and significant increases in load magnitude. Monopile (monoshaft) foundations have been utilized where one large bored pile is used in lieu of a group of piles connected via a pile cap. In addition, to accommodate the design criteria, site conditions, and imposed loading, the geometry of the bored piles being designed and installed have been as large as 13 feet (4 m) or greater in diameter and to depths in excess of 260 feet (80 m).

During the past six or seven years extensive research has been performed on ore samples procured at the Bruns1,vick Tin Mines which is located in the south-west corner of New Brunswi.ck. This property was originally staked by Mount Pleasant Mines and they did considerable metallurgical and geological work on a small copper, zinc and tin deposit. In 1969, the property was obtained by the Sullivan Mining Group and after much geological and diamond drilling work, an entirely separate ore body \Vas located two miles south of the previous workings. The major economic metals in this ore zone are tungsten, bismuth and molybdenite, but many other metals exist as well. As the ore contains a host of different mineral species, it can be seen that considerable time WRS required to develop a practical flow sheet.

A consideration of mining ventures and the changes of an environmental nature that occur. The paper is introduced with a general statement claiming recognition that mining ventures are important to human well-being but that these need to be justified against the environmental changes that they bring about. The various factors that need to be considered are cited followed by an historical review of mining activities. The various environmental issues are discussed under three headings; socio-economic, physical and biological, prior to reviewing the world's demand for minerals including fossil fuels. In conclusion guidelines for appraising mining ventures relative to environmental changes that may occur, are given.

The commercial extraction of metals from manganese nodules on an industrial scale requires more than 50% of the investment necessary to realize manganese nodule mining. This is mainly due to the fact that a completely new metallurgical processing scheme for the extraction of both base metals (Ni, Cu, Co) and high-tech metals (Mo, Li, Ga) has to be developed and upgraded to industrial scale. There are a number of conventional processing technologies that combine hydro- and pyro-metallurgical approaches such as the INCO and CUPRION processes which have been developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, new approaches based on selective leaching with chelating agents and bioleaching try to minimize energy consumption and waste production. All of these extraction methods require knowledge how the metals are structurally bound in the manganese oxides. In this contribution we will review the current knowledge about the mineralogy of iron and manganese minerals in the different marine oxide deposits, present our results, and discuss the possible consequences for metal extraction.

For improvement of urban traffic infrastructure, the City of Amsterdam is cur­rently constructing the 9.5 km long North-South Metro line passing through the central districts of Amsterdam. Focal section of the project is the Central Station linking the NS Line with the Central Railway Station, the East Metro line, new bus and tramway terminals, ferries and individual traffic. Construction works required for the project are of high complexity and technical standards. They are executed under severe restrictions concerning programming, space, logistics, and impact on the integrity of existing buildings and structures as all existing installations and facilities have to maintain fully operational during the construction period. The paper deals with the main geotechnical features of the project and in particular with the diaphragm wall and bored pile construction at the Voor-plein and the De Ruijterkade sections of the Central Station.

Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

The poor flotation response of many coals has in the past been attributed to such factors as differences in rank, differences in degree of oxidation, differences in petrographic composition, or slime coatings. The present work shows that while all these factors undoubtedly influence flotation, the size distribution of the feed may override these. Evidence is presented which shows how this factor can lead to substantial losses of coarse coal (>250 µm)from a coal which would normally be considered amenable to flotation. Reasons for this loss of flotation response are suggested together with means of overcoming the problem.

The recent depressant research is summarized, and a new kind of depressant (SCO) has been put forward in this article. Using Na-oleate as a collector and SCO as a depressant, separation of dolomite and phosphate was studied. When SCO was added in the concentration range of 80 g/t to 2kg/t at pH 9.5 ± 0.2, dolomite was absolutely depressed, and apatite kept its floatability. Interestingly, in the mixture of phosphate and dolomite, the dolomite floated. The reasons for such a behavior are investigated through flotation and electrokinetic studies. It was found that the adsorption of dissolved species on dolomite and phosphate resulted in reverse flotation. A concentration of 31.59% P205 and 83.87% recovery of P205 was obtained from the mixture of phosphate and dolomite (2:1) with 26.6% P205 using 210 g/t SCO and Na-oleate 4.93*10-5 M at pH 9.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is conducting a program of research and development into alternatives to the use of conventional boilers for the generation of electricity from brown coal. The objectives of the program are to reduce the cost of electricity generation and also to improve the thermal efficiency so as to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. The program presently includes the following four technologies: Hydro-thermal Drying, Direct Coal Fired Gas Turbine, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle, and Steam Fluidised Bed Drying. The Hydro-thermal Drying process produces a combustible coal-water-slurry fuel which is suitable for use in a coal fired gas turbine. The coal fired gas turbine has the potential to produce electricity at a lower cost than conventional power stations and when combined with a steam cycle, it will also use significantly less coal. The Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle process gasifies the coal, cleans the gas, and then bums it in a gas turbine/combined cycle. This process is being developed in Europe and the USA in order to meet their stringent emission regulations. It offers Victoria cleaner more efficient and cheaper electricity.

"Serrana’s concentrator, in Araxii, has capacity of producing approximately 800,000 tomes of phosphate rock per year, with a P205 grade of 36%, from ores grading between 13% and 14% P205. The annual mining rate is around 3.5 Mt and the apatite is concentrated according to the following sequence: crushing, grinding, desliming, flotation and low and high intensity magnetic separations.Two industrial flotation columns (3.0 m x 4.5 m x 14.5 m) were commissioned in 1993 as a replacement for circuits of barite and apatite fines flotation. In 1994, four additional flotation columns of the same dimensions were put into operation, replacing 42 Wemco mechanical cells (300 ft3 each), in the barite pre-flotation, coarse apatite (two columns) and tailings regrind flotation Circuits. Overall, 66 mechanical cells (300 ft3 each) were replaced by only six flotation columns, designed by Cominco Engineering Services Ltd - CESL.The present paper describes the stages of process development, pilot plant testwork and implementation of the industrial project, highlighting the most relevant aspects of each of them. The results achieved are related to improvements in flotation selectivity, gains in P205 recovery and better process control, resulting in better quality products and lower production costs. Other benefits included a decrease in flotation reagents, electrical energy and maintenance materials consumption. These factors contributed to a significant decrease in the cost of phosphate rock production at Serrana, in Araxa - M G."

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

"AbstractIn order to raise the enormous amounts of capital which will be essential for the development of Canada's mineral and petroleum resources, this country's resource industry must be permitted to earn an acceptable rate of return. The existing tax regime, with its high rates, complexities and misdirected incentives, presents a serious obstacle to our resource industries in their development of Canada's immense , but increasingly lean, resources. Government tax and other policies are not the only cause of the crisis now facing the resource sector in Canada, but a reformed tax system, with stable and reasonable tax burdens, is required if Canada's resources of minerals, oil and natural gas are to continue to contribute in the future, as in the past, to our national well-being.An independent task force, organized under the auspices of the Canada West Foundation, has recently completed a wide -ranging report: on the future development of Canada's mineral, oil and gas resources. This five-volume report, completed after almost two years of research and study, concludes that Canada •is facing a major crisis •in the development of our resources, It states that unless corrective action is taken now, mineral production and exports could decline drastically after 1985, at the same time that Canada would face massive bills for imported oil because of inadequate and declining production.The task force, chaired by the author of this article, has put forward recommendations for a fundamental shift in both federal and provincial policies in order that Canada's mineral reserves can be developed in the national interest. "Control of fugitive dust has become increasingly important in the mining industry both from a health and safety and environmental standpoint. Mining operations in particular have required improved fugitive dust control due to recent lowering of the allowable airborne silica concentration to which workers can be exposed. Experience has now proven that the implementation of a surfactant based chemical dust suppression system can enhance existing mechanical dust control methods resulting in much more efficient control of fugitive dust.The Porcupine Joint Venture (Dome Mine) utilizes dry secondary crushing and screening that makes it particularly prone to fugitive dust emissions. A variety of potential dust control systems were evaluated and this led to the installation of a surfactant based water spray system to augment the existing mechanical dust collection systems.A great deal was learned through the implementation of this system. This paper describes the entire process, from testing, system design and installation, through optimization and standardization of operation. In addition a variety of problems were identified, and innovative solutions were provided. Also, the metallurgical impacts on down stream processing are highlighted. Finally, a full discussion of overall results including a discussion of the relationship between silica and total dust concentrations is included."
