Earth Pressure tunnel boring machines are tackling difficult ground conditions that five years previous were not considered feasible. The technology has evolved that allows EPB TBMs to cross into areas that with the latest in conditioning and special design considerations are now possible to mine. This paper will review the various recent developments and those projects where these new techniques have been applied.

Computer simulation and mineral modeling was applied to the optimization of a grinding circuit in a plant processing 256 t/h magnetite. These tools were used to develop a grinding and classification configuration to decrease the grade of silica in the magnetite concentrate, which is produced by the plant. Empirical grinding and classification models were finely tuned using plant experimental data. The JKSimMetTM 5.0 software was used to simulate the grinding and classification units. By applying changes in the original circuit, a throughput increment of 100% was achieved with an important reduction in the energy consumption. The silica content in the magnetite concentrate can be decreased by regrinding the coarse fraction of fine screens into a separate ultrafine grinding unit instead of returning this flow to the ball grinding mills.

Occupying a refuge alternative (RA) is an accepted practice in mine fires and explosions when escape is not feasible. MSHA has promulgated a final rule on refuge alternatives that includes a recognition that thermal environment is an important consideration. To this end, an environmental index was specified. The question remains about how to test a refuge shelter to demonstrate that it meets the final rule. The analysis followed five activities: A. Provide an estimate of heat generated by an individual refuge alternative occupant; B. Evaluate the Steadman Apparent Temperature criterion of 95°F; C. Discuss simulations based on body temperature or skin temperature limits; D. Suggest method of simulating human heat generation during refuge occupancy; and E. Suggest alternative methodologies/criteria for evaluating heat and humidity survivability inside a refuge alternative.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. The proposed recommencement of mining activities recognises the complexity of the KIVS and later disruptive faulting and will require tighter grade control systems, targeted mining techniques and a gravity circuit to maximise free Au recovery.CITATION:Vigar, A J, Lueck, B, Taylor, I, Prendergast, K and Dale, P, 2015. Underground depillaring of contiguous coal seams/sections is a difficult problem, which becomes even more complex if the interburden/parting between them is thin. Conventionally, the depillaring with caving of contiguous seams/sections is done in descending order. However, if the parting is thin, the influence of the top sections/seams working over the standing pillars of bottom the sections/seams becomes extremely important for the safety and optimal exploitation of coal. Field investigations were carried out at Nowrozabad East mine where superimposed pillars of the Johilla top section were depillared above the developed pillars of the Johilla bottom section with a 3 m thick parting between the two sections. The competency of the 3 m thick parting (which consists of alternate layers of shale, sandstone and shaly sandstone) was improved by reinforcement (underpinning). The strata control investigations did not show any considerable instability problem of the 3 m thick reinforced parting and pillars of the bottom section due to top section depillaring. On the basis of this field investigation and a laboratory study on simulated models, simultaneous extraction of both the sections, along with reinforcement of the parting, was suggested for the geomining conditions of the Johilla top and bottom sections. Adopting the suggested simultaneous depillaring process, two sub panels of Johilla top and bottom sections have successfully been extracted without any strata control problem. This paper presents this case study along with the results of the strata monitoring conducted to evaluate performance of the underground structures during the field trial.

Several universities and colleges in Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include Tasmania in Australia, British Columbia in Canada and Alaska in the United States. The objective of this work was to develop a diversified geoscience educational model at the two-year technical, vocational and continuing education level that provides the source from which any nation can draw the proper educational tools to create a new geoscience program, modernize an existing program or strengthen a weak program. More than 100 mineral industry organizations provided information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered have been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration. These included geological, geochemical, environmental and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model was developed for the three levels of training. The international need for a study of this type was recognized as early as 1980, following numerous contacts from domestic and foreign geoscience educators regarding the structure and success of training within the University of Alaska Fairbanks Mining Extension program, located in Fairbanks. Contacts, correspondence and visits included educators from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mozambique and the conterminous United States. The need was magnified between 1985 and 1989 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, when an attempt failed at initiating and developing a two-year geoscience vocational-technology program leading to an Associate of Science degree.

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016. The Thirlmere aqueduct was constructed over 110 years ago to provide water from the Lake District (in the north-west of England) to the city of Manchester some 60 miles (100 km) away. The aqueduct remains, to this day, a key piece of infrastructure in the distribution of raw water in the north-west of England. A short section of the aqueduct was identified as being in poor condition during routine inspections by the owner. Subsequent investigations attributed the conduit damage to the movement of unstable ground over the conduit. Bachy Soletanche Ltd was subsequently appointed to carry out the design and construction of the slope stabilisation works and to undertake repairs inside the damaged conduit. The works were undertaken on an existing slope which, in places stands at a gradient of up to 40º to the horizontal. Strict limitations on plant and equipment were imposed by the client (United Utilities) to ensure that slope and conduit loading and associated vibrations were kept to an absolute minimum during construction. An intensive instrumentation system was installed to monitor surface movements, ground movements at depth, conduit movement and strains across existing planes of weaknesses within the conduit. The solution comprised the installation of spaced piles up-slope and down-slope of the conduit. Restrictions were imposed on the minimum stand-off distance between the outside face of the conduit and the piling works so targeted permeation grouting was undertaken to improve the ?connection? between the conduit and the down-slope piles. The presence of existing sub conduit groundwater flows was suspected and the permeation grouting was focused in areas to minimize disruption to the groundwater regime. The paper presents the basis of the design and highlights the combined construction and instrumentation methods adopted to minimise damage to this valuable asset.

The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

In all the industries that require blasting operations using explosives, there exists numerous unwanted side effects of the blast which may pose as environmental hazards. These hazards face prominence, especially in India, where there are very stringent rules and regulations governing the use of explosives. The environmental hazards associated with blasting operations as a whole can be tacked successfully to a certain extent depending upon the ultimate expectations of ,the post-blast effects and the limitations of the environmental obligations as specified by the authorities from time to time and from place to place. The main parameters which require attention to limit the post-blast results to the optimum level are ground vibrations, dust pollution, gas pollution, air blast effects, noise pollution & fly rocks etc.

In High Pressure Die Casting a molten metal is injected through a thin gate into the cast cavity. High injection pressures and high gate velocities create atomization phenomena which can negatively affect the final quality of the cast. In order to control atomization process it is essential to understand the atomization patterns and the two-phase flowfield that exist at the gate exit. In the present work, 2D numerical simulations of the flow of molten Magnesium through a high aspect-ratio rectangular gate are performed using a water analogue for an open and closed cavity. The numerical simulations made use of VOF-type (Eulerian) physical models and Lagrangian models. Further, a sub-grid scale model was implemented that, in conjunction with VOF-type equations can efficiently predict the general atomization pattern without the need for high-resolution grids. The numerical results were compared to experimental data for validation.

HE Tonopah Extension property consisted originally of three claims, with an area of 38 acres. In 1902 a shaft, now known as No. 1, was started near the eastern end of the property, close to the Tonopah Mining Co.'s boundary line, in the. andesite cap rock' which covers the ore-bearing formations in the western end of the Tonopah district. A short distance below the 60-ft. level, the orebodies pinched out, although the veins continued. This shaft has not been used since 1916. Before 1910, the production was small, coming mostly from small shoots of high-grade shipping ore. In that : year, the, company started its 30-stamp mill and cyanide plant; the mill was later enlarged to 50 stamps, with a corresponding increase in the cyanide-plant capacity, which brought the capacity of the mill up to 350 .tons per day. The total production of the mine to Oct. 1, 1920, is 871,177 tons of ore, from which was recovered 15,267,216 oz. of silver and 156,241 oz. of gold.' This makes an average recovery per ton of 17.5 oz. silver and 0.179 oz. gold. The average price received for silver since' the beginning of operations is 65.87 c. per oz., and the average value recovered from the ore-'is $15.25. The area of the property has been gradually increased by purchases and consolidations of adjoining ground until it is now 647 acres. A new shaft, known as No. 2, was started in 1912, 1600 ft. west .of No. 1, and in the following year a crosscut on the 750-ft. level of this shaft resulted in the discovery of the. Murray Vein system, from which the greatest prosperity of the mine has come. This vein, with its related veins,

Each mining district presents different problems as to the methods of ore extraction cad underground support, which are dependent upon the type of the ore deposit and the character of the inclosing rock. Mining costs, however, depend largely aeon the efficiency with which the methods employed underground are [applie] as well as upon the selection of the method best adapted to the physical conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present to the operator in other districts a detailed description of ho mining method used ins results obtained in tie exploitation of the bedded magnetite deposits of the Mineville district. The town of Mineville is situated in the Adirondacks, five miles west of Port Henry on Lake Champlain.

A series of fault slip seismic events have occurred at Garson mine. The events have occurred during development advancement exposing faults, after the extraction of single stopes due to mining induced stress change, and due to time effects after delays of many days during which no mining had been conducted. This paper discusses the study completed consisting of a global or holistic approach aimed at mitigating some of the risks associated with the structurally controlled rockbursts at Garson. Background Garson mine is located in the south east area of the Sudbury Basin (Ontario, Canada). Mining occurs in two main ore bodies (the #1 Shear and the #4 Shear) which are copper-nickel-sulphide and occur within shear zones that (as well as the ore bodies) strike approximately east-west and dip steeply south. From the north (footwall), lithologies progress (Figure 1a) from norite (NR), to greenstone (GS), and finally to meta-sediment (MTSD). A generally WNW-ESE striking, bifurcated sub-vertical dyke of olivine diabase (OLDI) cuts the series. The current active mining block at Garson is between 4700L and 5100L (levels denote depth in feet below surface).

From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

"Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) used as catalyst which reduces toxic substances in emission gas exhausted from an automobile should extensively be recycled because they are rare metals produced only at the limited regions. The recycling process is to smelt an alumina honeycomb, in which PGM is built, in molten iron with flux such as lime and silica to separate them. PGMs are concentrated in molten iron while alumina in slag.The objective of this study is to understand the factor to concentrate PGMs in liquid iron as much as possible. Fundamental research of the distribution of the PGMs between the slag and liquid iron was carried out to recover the value metals of platinum, palladium and rhodium from the three-way auto catalyst. The distribution ratios of platinum, palladium and rhodium between the Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron are from 10-6 to 10-5, and these are concentrated in comparison with slag phase by about 1 million times to the liquid iron at 1873 K. The distribution ratios of platinum between the FexO-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron decrease from 0.1 to 2?10-4 with increasing the CaO content in the slag. The CaO addition to the FexO unary slag is effective in concentrating platinum in molten iron.Based on the distribution ratios obtained in this work, recovery of PGMs was determined. The recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium increase with increasing the mass ratio, Mmetal/Mslag. In the case of the conditions of Mmetal/Mslag = 0.04, the recoveries of PGMs showed more than 99.97%. The use of liquid iron and carbon saturated liquid iron as the collector metal is advantageous for the PGM recycling of the three-way auto catalyst. We found that PGMs are enriched to the molten iron or the carbon saturated iron and the slag loss of PGMs is negligible small."

A coal mine impoundment failure has the potential to be environmentally devastating and life-threatening. It is well documented that after seismic events slope failures in impoundments can occur. It has been concluded that often the main driven factor of the failure is the increase in excess pore pressure due to ground vibration. A small amount of research has been done regarding the stability of coal mine impoundments under natural seismic events; however no research has been done considering vibrations from mine blasts. If it is taken into account that current environmental restrictions oblige to increase the capacity of coal mine impoundments, thus increasing the hazard of such structures, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of near-by mine blasting on the stability of the coal mine impoundments in order to mitigate and control the potential of slope failures. To study the behavior of excess pore pressure under blasting conditions, scaled simulations of production blasting events were set up inside of a controlled sand tank. The research was divided in two stages. The first one was done, using dry conditions, while in the second part, the same set of tests were performed under saturated conditions. This document shows the partial results for stage one (dry conditions). For the tests, explosive charges were set off within the sand tank at various distances to simulate different blasting distances. Information was collected from geophones, accelerometers, microphones and high speed video camera for dry and saturated scenarios and additionally from piezometers under saturated conditions to assess the behavior of the material under blasting conditions.

"Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. Geochemical conditions within a leaching operation are heterogeneous. This variability arises mainly from hydrological controls imparted by physical characteristics of the ore and by heterogeneous metallurgical properties at the rock-fragment and industrial heap scale. The resulting chemical conditions are responsible for stratified mineral recovery, non-uniform extraction and prolonged leach cycles. This paper presents field data from a sulfide-leaching operation which clearly demonstrate the impact of chemical heterogeneity on metal recovery and the potential use of modern measuring techniques to facilitate operational monitoring and decision making for optimization of leaching operations.

"In 1942, commercial mining operations began in what is now the Lucky Friday Ag/Pb/Zn mine in Idaho’s Silver Valley. Wholly owned since 1962 by Hecla Mining Company, the mine has produced more than 145 million ounces of silver and has been a mainstay producer in Idaho’s Silver Valley for over 70 years.However, by the early 21st century, the mill had fallen, technologically, seriously behind the rest of the industry. Accordingly, starting in 2005, the current mill management team set to revitalizing the milling operation. This paper will describe how the mill was systematically evaluated and the aging infrastructure replaced with more current technology. Driven by internal mill review studies supported by QEMSCAN mineralogical balancing, the mill has in recent years been through waves of upgrading – from the installation of new mechanical and column flotation equipment to the introduction of on-stream analysis, a technology well-accepted around most of the industry but alien to this technologically conservative mining district.The experience at Lucky Friday is a testament to the need for ongoing structured mill optimisation and technology upgrading in established mining operations. This paper will describe engineering experiences associated with upgrading equipment in an operating mill, contained in a confined building. Experiences in teaching the team new ways of operating a mill, and finally the metallurgical rewards that have been reaped will be described.INTRODUCTIONMining in Idaho’s Silver ValleyIdaho’s Silver Valley is a 64-km long valley flanked by the US Northern Rocky mountains, seldom more the 3-km wide, and stretching across much of Idaho’s northern panhandle, roughly 150 km south of the Canadian border. Mining has been continuously active in the area for more than 140 years, during which time, the Silver Valley has become one of the richest silver producing districts in the world, and as of 1985 had out-produced the 500 years of production from the famed Potosi district in Bolivia. Since 1885, almost 100 deposits have been discovered and worked in the district (Chapman, 2000)."
