Caterpillar has been involved in highwall mining since the purchase of Bucyrus in 2011. The Cat® HW300 is a continuation of the Superior Highwall Miner that was first sold in the USA in 1994. Currently, there are more than 80 machines supplied worldwide, and Caterpillar envisions increasing the population steadily in the coming years. The Cat highwall miner product group, based in Beckley, WV, has been involved in the sales of all miners to date. With the dealer model that Caterpillar is using, more people, dealers in particular, need to be trained on the application of highwall mining. A site investigation is a highwall specialist?s work, and Caterpillar assists dealers and customers in determining the technical feasibility of highwall mining on mine sites. With the ever-increasing amount of requests, it proved to be important that people without highwall mining expertise, yet who are familiar with mining, could perform a very quick analysis of a potential highwall mining site to determine at an early stage if it is worthwhile to invest the time and money of all parties?customer, dealer, and Caterpillar?in further follow-up. Therefore, Caterpillar would like to introduce the Cat HW300 QuickScan tool.

Pillar design formulae have existed for decades, and the guidelines for design stability factors are generally accepted by regulatory agencies and broadly used within the coal industry. Nearly all design pillar formulae are based on geometrical parameters of pillars resulting from empirical investigations, with primary focus on the pillar width-to-height (W/H) ratio and associated shaping constants from regression. The most widely used modern pillar design formula in the coal industry, the Mark- Bieniawski equation, also adheres to this principle. Common practice when applying Mark-Bieniawski equation is to use a coal compressive strength of 900 psi. This reduces the design equation to sole dependence upon geometry. However, recent studies have shown that pillar strength is highly dependent on roof and floor properties, particularly the interfaces between the roof-pillar and pillar-floor. This study utilized numerical modeling using FLAC3D to evaluate the relative effects of varying roof and floor interface and mechanical properties. The results confirm that pillar strength is significantly influenced by the properties of the coal pillar interfaces with roof and floor. The mechanical properties of the roof and floor material have only a minor impact on pillar strength when compared with interface effects. These results were used to formulate design recommendations for existing pillar design methods.

"Steel wire mesh is the accepted standard for roof and rib skin control at most coal mines in the United States. Wire mesh is delivered to the mine in bundles that are heavy and awkward to handle. The large size, stiffness, and weight of the wire mesh can present a safety hazard in transporting underground and storing on the roof bolter. Installing wire mesh on the roof and ribs with the roof bolter can be a challenge as well.Synthetic mesh is lighter than wire mesh and can be folded and rolled into a safe, manageable size. A single synthetic mesh roll large enough to cover the roof and ribs in a deep cut can be safely handled by two men. The roof bolter is designed to carry and dispense the roll as it advances and installs primary roof support, resulting in a single pass roof and rib ground control solution. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of the roof bolter synthetic mesh handling system developed by J. H. Fletcher & Co., Huesker, Inc., and Oxbow Mining.INTRODUCTIONRoof and rib skin control in some coal mines has been an issue since mining first began. Roof and rib skin problems vary from mine to mine. The type of roof rock material exposed after mining; the mine atmosphere; and stresses from depth of cover, over mining, and/or undermining are some of the variables that can contribute to roof skin problems from mine to mine.Potential roof and rib skin problems can be time dependent as well. Some mines have roof skin rock, sometimes called draw rock, that falls when drilling the hole for the roof bolt as the initial roof support is installed. Some roof skins are more stable but can fail over time. The failure of roof skin can even be between properly installed roof bolts with roof plates (Figure 1).Mines have most commonly used a wire mesh that comes in individual panels anywhere from 5 ft x 5 ft (1.5 m x 1.5 m) all the way up to 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) in size. They are typically constructed of 8- or 9-gauge wire welded on a 4 in (102 mm) square pattern. A 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) panel weighs approximately 35 lbs (16 kg). These steel wire mesh panels can make it a difficult and sometimes dangerous task to deliver them from the surface to the roof bolter and then store on the machine. Manipulating the mesh panels from the storage area on the machine to the final installation position on the roof or rib can also be a daunting task (Figure 2)."

"In this paper, the advantage of using numerical models with the strength reduction method (SRM) to evaluate entry stability in complex multiple-seam conditions is demonstrated. A coal mine under variable topography from the central Appalachian region is used as a case study. At this mine, unexpected roof conditions were encountered during development below previously mined panels. Stress mapping and observation of ground conditions were used to quantify the success of entry support systems in three room-andpillar panels. Numerical model analyses were initially conducted to estimate the stresses induced by the multiple-seam mining at the locations of the affected entries. The SRM was used to quantify the stability factor of the supported roof of the entries at selected locations. The SRM-calculated stability factors were compared with observations made during the site visits, and the results demonstrate that the SRM adequately identifies the unexpected roof conditions in this complex case. It is concluded that the SRM can be used to effectively evaluate the likely success of roof supports and the stability condition of entries in coal mines.INTRODUCTIONSince the introduction of roof bolts in the coal mines during the late 1940s and 1950s, roof bolts promised to dramatically reduce roof fall accidents (Mark, 2002). However, ground falls still remain a significant factor in underground coal mine injuries and fatalities. In 2013, ground falls accounted for 4 of the 14 fatalities and 166 of the 1577 reported lost-time injuries in underground coal mines (MSHA, 2015).The design of appropriate support systems requires the understanding of: 1) the variable nature of the rock mass, 2) the performance and characteristics of the roof support, 3) the interaction between the rock mass and the installed support system, and 4) the in-situ and mine-induced stress distribution around the excavation. Over the past 25 years, multiple design approaches have been used in coal mine ground control. The approaches include empirical mechanistic methods, empirical statistical analysis, rules of thumb, and numerical methods (Hebblewhite 2006). In the U.S., Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) can be given as an example of an empirical method. ARBS uses relatively simple equations to calculate the intensity of support provided by a roof bolt system and compares it with a suggested ARBS value (Mark et al., 2001). The suggested ARBS design equation is derived from an analysis of 100 case histories. The ARBS design equation is dependent on two parameters: depth of cover and Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR). More recently, a probabilistic design approach was developed by Canbulat and van der Merwe (2009) in South Africa. In this method, the variability of the rock mass, the mining geometry, and support characteristics are included in the analytical models. The major advantages of these two methods are: 1) they can be applied rapidly and easily, 2) complex rock mass/ roof support interaction mechanisms are represented with simple equations, and 3) they are supported by large databases. However, both methods generally ignore mining-induced stress distribution, details of the roof support system, details of the geological setting, and the interaction between the support system and the rock mass."

"China is the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world. The mining-induced surface subsidence has bad influences on the surface and structures above the surface. In order to minimize disasters, removal, reinforcement, or maintenance structures are often adopted. In the application of maintenance methods, it is necessary to carry out dynamic surface subsidence prediction to choose maintenance methods, optimize maintenance time, and evaluate the amounts of work. Time series methods and influence function methods are common for dynamic surface subsidence prediction, but the former is difficult to consider with underground mining conditions, and the latter has low prediction precision. Therefore, this paper develops a dynamic subsidence prediction model aided by field-measured data and realizes the model programming. The model could achieve high-precision prediction of dynamic surface deformation through optimizing the parameters in time by using field-measured data of surface subsidence. The research results of engineering cases show that, with the method of dynamic prediction, the standard error can be controlled in the range of 5%, greatly improving the accuracy of dynamic prediction of mining subsidence, which provides strong technical support for the maintenance and management of structures. INTRODUCTION With the rapid economic development and continued industrialization process, the demand for energy is growing in China. Today, China is one of the largest coal, oil, and gas consumers in the world. Coal consumption accounts for 47.7% of the total consumption in the world (Tian, 2016). In order to meet the demand for coal resources in the process of modernization, more and more coal mines carry out coal mining under villages, buildings, highways, and bodies of water. The mining-induced overlying strata and surface subsidence have bad effects on surface and on various structures (such as buildings, railways, highways, high-tension transmission lines) and could even cause various disasters (Williams et al., 1998; Bell et al., 2000; Doyle et al., 2002). Generally, methods, such as removal, reinforcement, or maintenance are taken to eliminate the adverse impacts (Kraatz, 1984; Bell and Genske, 2001; Wang, 1989). When reinforcement or maintenance is selected to remove bad effects, the proper maintenance methods must be chosen. In addition, maintenance time, as well as an evaluation of time it will take to do the work are necessary to predict the surface subsidence with high precision."

The successful application of the science of rock mechanics to the practical problems of coal mine design requires the acquisition and reduction to useable form of large amounts of field and laboratory data, and the construction and analyses of numerous geostructural models containing a wide variety of geometric and physical strength variables. Typically, the rime constraints placed on a new mine design project coupled with the inherent complexities of a good rock mechanics study combine to limit the applications of rock mechanics to the most rudimentary level. To facilitate a better application of rock mechanics to mine design problems, an interactive software package has been developed for use on a graphic mini-computer system that serves to aid the engineer in the timely and efficient analyses of rock mechanics data and geostructural models. The first phase of the rock mechanics package solicits the input of the raw geologic and rock strength data, analyzes and arranges this data in a logical manner, produces complete listings and statisitical summaries of the various rock properties, and stores the data on magnetic tapes and disks to serve as a future Rock Mechanics Data Base. The second phase of the software package provides for the analyses of a variety of geostructural models using a wide variety of geometric variables coupled with the rock strength data stored in the Rock Mechanics Data Base. This software package allows for the evaluation of numerous geostructural mine models for the design and selection of mine roof support and pillar systems (see Table l).

Since the introduction of longwall systems, the prediction of roof behavior and support requirements have become the major issue referring directly to safety as well as productivity. In more recent times, and especially in the USA where longwalls are exclusively equipped with costly hydraulic self- propelled support systems, a decision whether a longwall is applicable in a given condition, and when so, what kind of equipment should be selected, is of primary importance. There are numerous examples where lack of experience, and subsequently wrong selection of supports or winning machines, resulted in considerable losses. It should be emphasized that careful studies of prevailing geological and mining conditions, especially in a new area, are required to assure a successful operation. An evaluation of the conditions can be carried out in different ways utilizing such methods as: - Theoretical approach. applicable when geological conditions comply with the theoretical assumptions. - Empirical relationship which gives satisfactory results where the coefficients could be adequately determined. - Structural geological studies which must be undertaken in all cases, since the frequency of fractures and their orientation have a prevailing influence on roof behavior. - Scale model study on equivalent material for determination of failure conditions in the roof and mechanism of movement (flow) of broken rock matter. Coefficients for empirical formulas can be determined by these types of studies, as can boundary limits for mathematical modeling. - Mathematical modeling, e.g., finite element analysis. - Measurements and observations taken underground during the development period end utilization of experience for previous longwall panels in the area. Usually it is the most practical method where mining and geological conditions are comparable. An application of me or more of the above approaches remains to be a matter of judgement for particular conditions, however, the utilization of a practical experience, when available, is usually the safest way for planning a successful longwall operation.

A new formulation is given to conduct a probabilistic block theory analysis. A new computer code (BTAC) has been developed to perform both deterministic and probabilistic block theory analyses. The variability of the discontinuity orientation and shear strength is incorporated in the probabilistic block theory analysis. Discontinuity orientation is treated as a bivariate random variable including the correlation that exists between the dip angle and dip direction. BTAC code was applied to perform both deterministic and probabilistic block theory analyses for a part of an open pit mine in the U.S. Needed geological and geotechnical data for the analyses were obtained from field and laboratory investigations. The variability of the discontinuity orientations resulted in important differences between the probabilistic and deterministic block theory analyses results. The results confirmed that the design value selected for the Maximum Safe Slope Angle (MSSA) for a particular region in the open pit mine based on the deterministic block theory analysis can be on the unsafe side. In summary, the results showed clearly the superiority of probabilistic block theory analysis over the deterministic block theory analysis in obtaining additional important information with respect to designing rock slopes.

"The Analysis of Retreat l\.fining Pillar Stability (ARJ\1PS) and the Lal\.fodel programs have been used successfully in the U.S. for designing safe pillar recovery operations for many years. However, the recent Crandall Canyon l\.fine collapse showed that further research is required to improve the pillar design for recovery under deep cover. To this end, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the West Virginia University (WVU) l\.fining Engineering Department have been working together to improve both the ARJ\1PS and the Lal\.fodel programs.This paper compares and analyzes the overburden loads calculated by ARJ\1PS 2002, the new ARJ\1PS 2010, and the Lal\.fodel program with regard to the retreat pillar line, the gob, and the barrier pillars. The analysis shows a number of distinct differences between the ARJ\1PS and Lal\.fodel loading distributions. Ultimately, the programs, with their distinctive load distributions, are used to analyze a database of 52 deep cover pillar retreat case studies, and the ability of each program to discriminate between successful and unsuccessful retreat pillar plans is evaluated.INTRODUCTIONThe Analysis of Retreat l\.fining Pillar Stability (ARJ\.f PS) and the Lal\.fodel programs have been used successfully in the U.S. for designing safe pillar recovery operations for many years. In the past 15 years, the safety of retreat mining operations has greatly improved. l\.fark (2009) explains three steps promoted by l\1SHA and NIOSH for safer pillar recovery:1) Global stability through proper pillar design2) Local stability through proper roof support3) Worker safety through proper section managementThe ARJ\1PS and Lal\.fodel (Heasley, 1998) programs have been playing an important role in guiding mine operators in designing pillars to ensure the global stability of a retreat panel."

"The coal mine roof rating (CMRR) was developed by Chris Mark and Greg Molinda to bridge the gap between geological variation in underground coal mines and engineering design. The CMRR accounts for the compressive strength of the immediate roof, the shear strength and intensity of any discontinuities present, and the moisture sensitivity of the immediate roof. The CMRR has been widely used and validated in Eastern US coal mines, but it has seen limited application in the Western US.This study focuses on roof behavior at a Western coal mine. Mine A shows significant lateral geological variation, along with localized faulting and a laterally extensive sandstone channel network. The CMRR is not used to predict roof instability at the mine.It is, therefore, hypothesized that there are other factors that are correlated with roof instability in underground coal mines that could potentially also be included in the CMRR.This hypothesis was tested by collecting 30 CMRR measurements at Mine A. At each measurement location, a binary record of the roof condition (stable or unstable) was made along with parameters, such as depth of cover, thought to also correlate with roof stability. A statistical analysis of the data was performed to determine the parameters in addition to those included in the CMRR, which can be correlated to roof stability.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDRoof fall is one of the greatest hazards facing underground coal miners (Barczak et al., 2000). In 2017, 91 lost-time injuries occurred due to roof fall in US underground coal mines. A further 48 roof falls occurred with no lost days (MSHA, 2018).The coal mine roof rating (CMRR) classification was developed by Molinda and Mark (1994) to quantify the geological description of mine roof into a single value that could indicate mine roof stability and be used in engineering design. It is widely used in the Eastern US as an input for the analysis of longwall pillar stability (ALPS) in underground coal mines. It provides an excellent start; however, it is arguably not fully comprehensive, nor is it widely used in the Western US."

"The response of the surrounding rock mass to the creation of mining excavations determines the ultimate load on a pillar support system. In conditions where the ground is relatively soft and weak, the full overburden weight can be transferred to the pillar system. However, in stiffer and stronger rocks, a greater portion of the overburden load is transferred to the unmined coal barriers or abutments, and the pillar stress is reduced. This paper makes use of numerical models to examine the interaction between typical pillar systems and the surrounding rock mass for weak and strong geological conditions at various spans and depths of cover. The concepts of structural failure and functional failure of pillars are used to assess pillar performance when pillars are deformed beyond their peak resistance. The results show that the span-to-depth ratio is an important factor in determining the pillar stress and the ultimate deformation of pillars. The ultimate pillar strain appears to be closely related to the functional success of pillar systems.INTRODUCTIONThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was requested by Congress to study the safety of retreat pillar mining following the Crandall Canyon Mine disaster that took place near Price, Utah in August, 2007. As a part of this study, an investigation was made to better understand how the rock mass responds to the creation of mining excavations and how the loads are distributed among the pillars and the surrounding abutments or barriers. The outcome of these investigations contributed to the development of a modified loading model for the ARMPS-2010 (Mark, 2010) method ofretreat mining pillar design.Structural and Functional Failure of PillarsPillar design is typically conducted by estimating the pillar strength and stress, and then sizing the pillars so that an adequate margin of safety exists between the expected strength and stress. The pillar strength can be defined as the maximum resistance of a pillar to axial compression (Brady and Brown, 1985). If a pillar is loaded beyond its peak strength, load shedding or yielding can occur, and the pillar is considered to have failed as a structure. Structural failure generally refers to a loss of loadcarrying capacity."

The Monroe County Quarry is an open pit granite quarry located near the town of Bolingbroke. Monroe County. Georgia. The quarry has been in continuous operation for approximately 10 years. The quarry covers approximately 27 acres and has an annual production rate of 1.0 million tons. On the morning of April 26. 2000 a sudden rapid highwall failure occurred at the west end of the north wall of the quarry pit. The failure occurred approximately one hour after a three inch-wide crack was observed in an access road located at the crest of the highwall. No indications of failure had been observed prior to the development of the crack. The active mining area had been at the base of the failed area. The pit was successfully evacuated prior to the failure and there were no losses of either personnel or equipment. The amount of failed material was estimated to be in excess of two million tons. In order to ensure a safe working environment at the quarry a slope monitoring program was established in the area of the failure. The program consisted of using an EDM survey instrument to periodically measure the location of survey prisms installed at carious points on the north wall. The locations of the prisms were recorded over several months and changes in location were analyzed in order to identify and characterize the movement of the failed mass. The results of the analysis provided a basis for recommendations regarding access to various areas of the quarry. This paper discusses the factors contributing to the failure, the method of post-failure slope monitoring, anti the interpretation of the monitoring data.

"Coal burst represented a major hazard for some U.S. mining operations. This paper provides an historical review of the coal burst hazards, identifies the fundamental geological factors associated with these events, and discusses mechanisms that can be used to avoid their occurrences. Coal burst are not common in most underground mines. Their occurrence almost always has such dramatic consequences to a mining operation that changes in practice are required. Fundamental factors influencing coal burst events include strong strata, abnormal strata caving, elevated stresses, critical size pillars and the lack of sufficiently sized barrier pillars during extraction. These factors interact to produce excessive stress, seismic shock and loss of confinement mechanisms. Over the 90 years of dealing with these hazards, many novel prevention controls have been developed including novel mine designs and extraction sequences, most of which are site specific in their application. Without an accurate assessment of the fundamental factors that influence coal burst and knowledge of their mechanisms of occurrence, control techniques may be misapplied and risk inadequately mitigated. INTRODUCTIONCoal burst1are violent failures of ribs, roof or floor in underground mines. They are known to occur in complex ways and often under unique sets of conditions. This has made them extremely difficult to anticipate and control. Assessing coal burst risk requires engineers, managers, and safety professionals to recognize the fundamental factors responsible for these events. This helps practitioners recognize the hazard potential and understand the context in which various controls and barriers should be used. Only then can coal burst events be anticipated andappropriate mitigation techniques deployed.Over the last 90 years, a few coal burst events have been anticipated but most have eluded prediction. The authors examined the historical record (Appendix A) and determined that an inadequate understanding of the initiating geologic factors and their associated mechanisms of occurrence have contributed to the poor predictive capability. The historic record also indicates that control techniques have typically been site specific in their application."

"In order to access remote reserve areas, some U.S. coal mines have to maintain aged underground entries for a great distance. However, high humidity, warm temperature, and time dependent deterioration can cause progressive roof deterioration and unexpected roof falls can, pose a great challenge to ground control engineers. With an active belt structure in place and limited space, re-bolting becomes very costly, less effective, and, sometimes, impractical and unfeasible. To gain long-term entry stability and serviceability, operators typically rehabilitate the aged belt entries by installing standing steel set supports. In the last several years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC, (KMS) has assisted many coal mines with their belt entry rehabilitation projects, evaluated the ground condition of various aged belt entries, and designed different standing steel set support systems. This paper presents a case study of a large-scale roof fall that occurred at an aged belt entry in a mine located in an eastern coalfield, analyzes root causes of excessive deformation of square sets that were installed in an adjacent entry, evaluates the adequacy of an existing rehabilitation square set, and develops remedial recommendations for future rehabilitation practice. Based on the case study, the paper outlines design guidelines for rehabilitation steel sets that include field evaluation, engineering considerations, design assumptions, steel structural analysis, and field installation quality control. INTRODUCTION With gradual depletion of shallow coal reserves, some underground coal mines have to maintain long-term entries (belt, track, return airway, etc.) for a great distance in order to access remote coal reserve areas. However, due to high humidity, warm temperature, and aging in the belt entry, roof strata weathering and pillar degradation become more and more severe. Progressive roof deterioration poses a great challenge to ground control engineers. Pillar rib sloughs at certain locations, entry width increases in some areas, immediate roof sags, immediate roof rock falls out between bolts, existing bolts lose functionality due to corrosion, cutters develop deeper in corners, and strata separation develops deeper up into the main roof. As a result, unexpected roof falls occur in a random manner resulting in loss of production, damage of belt structure, and even injuries to underground personnel."

"A limestone mine in Ohio has had instability problems that have led to massive roof falls extending to the surface. This study focuses on the role that weak, moisture-sensitive floor has in the instability issues. Previous NIOSH research related to this subject did not include analysis for weak floor or weak bands and recommended that when such issues arise they should be investigated further using a more advanced analysis. Therefore, to further investigate the observed instability occurring on a large scale at the Ohio mine, FLAC3D numerical models were employed to demonstrate the effect that a weak floor has on roof and pillar stability. This case study will provide important information to limestone mine operators regarding the impact of weak floor causing the potential for roof collapse, pillar failure, and subsequent subsidence of the ground surface.IntroductionMassive roof falls extending to the surface at a limestone mine in Ohio have been studied collaboratively by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the mine owners. This paper provides a summary of the sequence of events leading to observed instability and presents a numerical modeling analysis that investigates the role a weak floor can have on roof and pillar stability.This study builds upon previous NIOSH research in underground limestone mines undertaken by way of a survey that analyzed performance of pillars in 34 different stone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern United States between 2005 and 2009 (Esterhuizen et al., 2011). This survey led to the development of underground stone mine pillar design guidelines based upon a “stability factor” for the pillar system. The factor is compared to operational experience to determine ranges of values that are typical of stable pillar systems. A software package titled Stone Mine Pillar Design (S-Pillar) was developed for easy application of these guidelines (Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2011).Weak floor in the present case study departs significantly from cases included in the previous NIOSH research, in that none of the 34 study mines had weak floor issues. Moreover, this case study is the first in which a weak floor has been monitored routinely as roof falls are occurring. A detailed report on the observations and measurements taken at the mine has been published (Murphy et al., 2015). The previous observations led to the conclusion that although there were weak bands in the pillar, the weak floor was the significant defect that led to the instability issues. The pillars were initially mined in 2004, approximately 10 years before the instability issues began to occur. Extremely difficult ground conditions were encountered in the main belt entry in a room and pillar mine in West Virginia. Several generations of supplemental support, including cable bolts, cribbing, and Heintzmann jacks and beams failed to halt roof falls that threatened workers safety and the life of the mine. Polyurethane (PUR) was injected into 27 intersections in the roof and the results were monitored by borehole video camera. The mine had averaged 2-3 falls in the beltway per year and, since the roof injection, no roof falls have occurred. Pre- and post injection monitoring of test holes showed that stability can be achieved without filling all of the existing void spaces. Video logging showed that the project goal of building a beam from 2-6 ft into the roof was successful. Pre-injection monitoring of roof fractures uphole can delineate the zones to target for reinforcement, and avoid pumping PUR into large voids to little effect. Multiple-¬injection zones can be identified, and the entire intersection drill hole array can be optimized based on knowledge of the fractured zones. In addition, pre-monitoring can prevent excessive hydrofracturing in solid zones. Polyurethane injection is a proven method of rock stabilization in even the weakest, most broken ground. Optimization of the injection design by pre-injection video diagnostics can greatly contribute to the successful and efficient roof stabilization.

Multiple seam mining and its associated problems are very serious in Southern West Virginia where poor planning or lack of knowledge in seam interaction often results in complete loss of coal properties. Several measures have been proposed to alleviate the interaction prob¬lems under various multiple seam conditions, but few of them are spec¬ific in terms of mining plan. Two parallel approaches are adopted for this paper. One is field investigation which consists mainly of mine site visits and gathering of data. The other is the two-dimensional finite element simulation of mine workings using the data gathered as input. Two typical cases which represent the past and present multi¬ple seam mining practice in West Virginia were investigated. Much attention is focused on the interaction problems experienced and the important parameters controlling interaction. Several key parameters controlling interaction in multiple seam mining were analyzed. Proper mining plans, by which the interaction problems can be minimized, are proposed for the individual cases after a better understanding of the interaction mechanism was realized through finite element analyses.

In a recent research effort, a laminated overburden loading model (as implemented in LaModel3.0 was compared with the results of ARMPS 2010, and the laminated overburden model was found to more accurately classify a ARMPS database of 52 deep cover case histories by a factor of 60% versus 54%. However, the LaModel analysis of each case study required several days to complete, as compared to a requirement of only several minutes for each ARMPS analysis. In the research presented in this paper, a computer code (ARMPS-LAM) has been developed to effectively implement the laminated overburden model into the ARMPS program. This program takes the basic ARMPS geometric input for defining the mining plan and loading condition and then automatically develops, runs, and analyzes a full LaModel analysis of the mining geometry to output the stability factor on the Active Mining Zone(AMZ), all without further user input. The present laboratory version of ARMPS-LAM can be run in batch mode; therefore, the ARMPS 2010 database of 645case histories can be analyzed very quickly. In an initial logistic regression analysis of this database, the ARMPS-LAM program was seen to be slightly more accurate than ARMPS 2010 by a factor of 71% versus 63%.

During the process of pillar extraction at the Welgedacht Colliery, an unexpected pillar collapse resulted in the entrapment of equipment. The area was visited soon after the event to evaluate the stability of the area for the purposes of extracting the equipment. It was found that the area had stabilised sufficiently to allow work without undue risk to the safety of workers. The equipment was reclaimed successfully. A subsequent investigation into the reasons for the collapse was conducted. It entailed detailed underground and surface subsidence observations and numerical modeling. It was found that none of the perceived negative factors that were present at the time could result in pillar loads that were sufficient to cause the collapse. It was concluded that the local pillar strengths were less than the nationally used value and that they were possibly further reduced by aging.

"As the International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) enters its 35th year in 2015, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. In the past three decades, ground control has made a tremendous advancement, and many case studies published in the 36 volumes of proceedings have demonstrated its important role in the daily mining operations. However, there is still plenty of room for improvements. This paper discusses the research needs in 12 subject areas, including mine geology, rock property, zones of disturbance in overburden, computer modeling, underground stress measurements, research method, roof bolting, coal pillars, failures, subsidence, shield supports, and coal bumps.INTRODUCTIONThe International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) was founded in 1981. Since then, 1,546 papers have been published in the 36 conference proceedings, including the three surface subsidence workshops held in the 1981, 1986, and 1992. All types of topical areas regarding mining, from geotechnical core loggings in the exploration phase through backfilling after mining to finally spoil piles stability on the surface, have been addressed. A review of these papers, and other related literature as well, indicate that ground control has developed to become an inseparable part of mine design and a problem-solving tool for safe production.After 34 years, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. There is no doubt that the conference series has achieved the goal for which it was originally designed: to provide an annual forum for the exchange of information among the researchers, government regulators, equipment manufacturers, consultants, service providers, and—above all—mine operators. There have been many papers addressing the application of ground control techniques for successful mine design and safe production, and, without these papers, many projects would have failed. In fact, the conference emphasis on application types of papers may have steered too far toward the application side. A review of the conference papers shows that papers have been leaning mostly toward the applied side, leaving most, if not all, fundamental issues behind in nearly every topical area.
