In February, 1976, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation obtained an option from Foote Minerals, Inc., to evaluate reprocessing of two uranium tailing piles. Foote received ownership of the Naturita and Durango tailing piles in 1967 through the purchase of Vanadium Corporation of America. The option was exercised in November, 1976, after initial testwork proved that a viable extraction technique existed. Preparation for production at Naturita began immediately with engineering and en¬vironmental permitting proceeding simultaneously. Production began in December, 1977, just 22 months after acquisition of the property and-was completed 17 months later.

The Pinto Valley Concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulphide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and moly concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/moly circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the moly concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the moly circuit were completed, the final moly concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns was chosen. The column design and construction were done utilizing in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing moly concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high moly tenors and low copper and iron content. In this paper, the operating parameters, mass balance, design, installation, commissioning and operation of the new flotation columns will be discussed.

Carbonaceous gold ores are ubiquitous to virtually all of the Carlin-type gold deposits along the Carlin gold belt in north central Nevada, representing the unoxidized "zones" of presumably extinct thermal spring systems of mostly Tertiary age. A period of subtropical weathering resulted in deep sub-lateritic zones in most deposits to several hundred feet below surface. Carbonaceous ores below this supergene profile of weathering have been investigated by various methods, including petrographic study, standard geochemical and organic carbon analyses, carbon and hydrogen isotopic ratios, electron-spin resonance spectra, infrared spectra, and DTA techniques. Results have been integrated with recent findings by other investigators utilizing fluid inclusion and thermal brine data to indicate a first phase hydrothermal solution temperatures and pressures at a minimum depth of 6 km under normal geothermal gradient. This phase resulted in the quartz-barite-calcite vein filling of the host rocks. Gold mineralization took place later at shallower depths. Primary organic material in carbonaceous ores from the Carlin and other mines appears to be a pyrobitumen residue derived from an old oil pool that had been heated by the thermal solutions, and from which the light hydrocarbon fractions were removed. Some of the bitumen was remobilized along silicified veinlets in the ore, but its role in the emplacement of the gold, itself, is not clear. The gold was localized submicroscopically in fine pyrite, mostly in framboids, and as fine metallic particles, but does not appear to be concentrated within the carbonaceous matter per se. However, reducing conditions associated with bituminous residues are believed to have been favorable for gold deposition.

This paper proposes a new method to estimate the percentage of load carried by the gob in underground coal mines using a new parameter that introduces the site-specific overburden geology. The new parameter was defined as the total strong layer thickness (tstr) that represents the strength and stiffness of the overburden with a single value. Twelve field measurement case studies from 11 different U.S. longwall mines with different overburden geologies were used to develop the new methodology. 2D numerical models of these case studies (and additional parametric runs with different panel widths) were verified against field measurements such as surface subsidence and stress. Statistical analyses using the model results were conducted for a loading model with the new tstr parameter as one of the variables. The new methodology was found to have a coefficient of determination (R2) of 85% when compared to the field measurements and the parametric models. The method was then tested for practical implementation for pillar design. The percentages of load carried by the gob as estimated by the new method were implemented into the LaModel program, that is commonly used in the coal industry. The results obtained from LaModel were compared to the available field stress measurements, and the new method implemented into LaModel was found to give successful results.

Understanding and managing risk is of increasing concern for the mining industry. Although methods exist to model geologic uncertainty based on stochastic modeling techniques and multiple realizations, there are few approaches to manage this geologic uncertainty in pit optimization. Block values can be penalized if the block uncertainty is high, but the goal here is to consider the reserve risk within the pit. This paper presents an approach for pit optimization that considers all realizations simultaneously with a heuristic pit optimizer. The heuristic algorithm maximizes value and also penalizes reserve risk. The inclusion of multiple realizations provides access to the risk or uncertainty in the total pit value. Considering this information permits an active risk management approach that can manage the uncertainty in the reserves within the entire pit.

"This project analyzed the efficiency of incorporating the use of directional drilling technology into coal overburden blasting. Directional drilling is currently in use in the petroleum industry and it is believed that it will be a valuable asset in the mining industry. This project has shown that directional drilling can be a viable technology for use in the coal overburden removal process resulting in increased drill utilization and potential for cost savings. Future work regarding blasting and geotechnical evaluation should be performed to solidify the concept. INTRODUCTION Determine the Potential Drill Utilization Improvements and Rock Fragmentation Requirements Using Directional Drilling in a Coal Mining Overburden Highwall Application was a project funded by Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions (Atlas Copco) based in Garland, Texas. The project was developed and researched by Montana Tech of the University of Montana. This project was intended to show how the use of directional drilling can increase drill utilization, while decreasing costs, without sacrificing overburden blasting results. This paper discusses a review of the literature, the methods performed, conclusions and future work Background Atlas Copco theorized that an alternative approach to drilling a cast blast pattern would be beneficial to coal mining operations by increasing drill utilization and therefore, decreasing overall costs. Increasing drill utilization results in an increase in the amount of time the drill is being productive, more drill bit time in ground. Atlas Copco’s theory is that by incorporating directional drilling in the design of a cast blast pattern, a drill rig could drill multiple directional holes, which are the length of the cast blast, from a single drill set up. A drill goes through a series of steps to complete a blast pattern, these steps include: tramming to the hole location, leveling the drill, drilling the hole, cleaning the hole, and retracting the drill steel. This process is repeated hundreds of times until the whole pattern is completed. The most time intensive part of this process is drilling out the blast pattern. Integrating directional drilling into this process could decrease the overall time it takes to drill out a blast pattern by minimizing the amount of time spent tramming and setting up for each subsequent hole. Tramming and drill set up are two aspects of the drilling process where the drill tool is not engaged with the ground and, therefore, not being utilized. A cast blast pattern designed to utilize directional drilling will allow the drill tool to be “in the hole” longer and will improve drill utilization. This change in drill utilization was analyzed. Drilling and blasting is an integral part of the mining process, without it mining would be a slower process and less material could be mined. Drilling provides holes for explosives to be loaded and then blasted. Blasting has been found to be the most cost effective method of fracturing rock in mining for material removal. Blasting is also used as a low-cost method to move the rock in open cast mines, commonly referred to as cast blasting. A cast blast is a large blast designed to allow for the maximum amount of overburden to be removed using explosives in a single blast thereby uncovering more coal at a lower cost. Not all the material is blasted to cast-to-final, which requires that material to be moved with large mining machinery. Material that is considered cast-to-final is material that has been thrown far enough to never be moved again in the coal extraction process, therefore it is in its final resting place. A typical cast profile and cast-to-final area is shown in Figure 1."

Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. She has sacrificed much for me, and I will never really be able to express the depth of my gratitude for Charlene's encouragement, loyalty and support over the past 36 years. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

The design of cover systems for reclamation schemes in tailings requires estimation or determination of tailings materials properties such as compressibility, shear strength and consolidation characteristics. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain truly undisturbed tailings samples for laboratory testing. In situ testing methods have been developed for economically obtaining large amounts of information. Two of these methods are described, the piezocone and the flat plate dilatometer. Both of these methods provide a rapid means of detailed material identification in a nearly continuous fashion for the entire depth investigated. The equipment is described and typical data from a uranium tailings impoundment is presented. The results are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the US mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the available research literature is timely. This paper describes a rapid review that identifies, characterizes, and classifies the research literature to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a Technology Readiness Assessment. Systematic search methods were applied to three electronic databases, and relevant articles were identified through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sixty-four articles from 2000 to 2020 met these criteria and were categorized into seven CXS technology categories. Review and assessment of the articles indicates that much of the literature-based evidence for CXS technology lies within lower levels of maturity (i.e., components and prototypes tested under laboratory conditions and in relevant environments). However, less evidence exists for CXS technology at higher levels of maturity (i.e., complete systems evaluated within operational environments) despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for systematic peer-reviewed research to evaluate the performance of CXS technologies and demonstrate the efficacy of prototypes or commercial products, which could be fostered by more collaboration between academia, research institutions, manufacturers, and mining companies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions. However, this contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate that most haul truck fatal accidents are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions (e.g., traveling through a berm). Lastly, the relatively small amount of literature and segmented nature of the included studies suggests that there is a need for incremental progress or more stepwise research that would facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies over time. This progression over time could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

The ( ) Tayaaja ( ) . The deposit ( ) 130 kilometers due east of the continental divide and approximately 290 kilometers east-southeast of Lima (Figure 1). Relief in the immediate vicinity of the mine, which lies or the west side of the Mantaro river, is in excess of 2,000 meters, and the elevation varies from a low of 2,000 meters above sea level on the Mantaro River to a high of 4,386 meters at point T-27 (Figure 2). Although the Cobriza deposit was first reported by the Italian Geographer Antonio Raimondi in 1866, only three reports have been published on the deposit, which began production in 1966 (Duefias, 1908; Fernandez Concha and Garcia y Garcia, 1961; Petersen. 1965). Many private reports have, however, been written by geologists employed by the Cerro de Pasco Corporation. These reports and the author's observations, while employed as the Cobriza Division Mine Geologists form the basis of the present paper, which describes the relations between-the ore controls in the Cobriza mine and the regional and local structure.

The design/build of two adjacent vertical mine shafts in difficult ground conditions at a mining complex in the midwestern United States required innovative construction techniques. Construction of the 267-m-deep Service Shaft required full depth dewatering wells and ground freezing. Blind drilling was utilized to excavate the 257-m-deep Production Shaft and it was finished with a steel/concrete composite liner that was floated into place. An equally unique component of the installation included supplying a high capacity vertical conveyor system, featuring a 273-m-lift. Other components of the project include the mine level development, as well as the design and installation of three hoisting systems, including a 45-ton capacity men/materials hoisting system.

Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

The rock quality designation (RQD) is a commonly used index for the classification and evaluation of rock mass quality and is widely adopted in mining and geological engineering. The traditional method of obtaining RQD still requires manual measurement of core length and calculation of RQD, which is inefficient. To address this problem, we propose a framework for drilling core image segmentation and RQD estimation from digital images of cores in core boxes based on the deep learning algorithm. The proposed framework is generated by combining the Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN) instance segmentation algorithm, the U-Shaped Convolutional Neural Networks (U-Net) semantic segmentation algorithm, and the image processing functions of the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, seven boreholes in the Xiushuihe vanadium-titanium magnetite mine, located in the Sichuan Province, China, were used as the case study. According to the comparison of the manual measurements and calculations of the cores taken from seven boreholes used to conduct this study, the framework can record the length of the drill cores and calculate RQD within an average error rate of 3.42%, while it saves about 85% of the working time. The results illustrate that the proposed framework enhances the efficiency of RQD calculation while satisfying the engineering requirements.

Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

Crocidolite is a well-known causative agent for mesothelioma. However, studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width although this has never been formally confirmed. To date, crocidolite appears to be the only asbestos mineral for which an epidemiological study comparing the risk of mesothelioma in a population exposed to ‘thin’ fibers with another exposed to ‘thick’ fibers of the same species may be carried out. Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite, and African Transvaal crocidolite can also be classified as thick fibers, and there is a paucity of mesotheliomas in populations exposed to them compared to those exposed to thin Cape crocidolite. No thin occurrences of these minerals are known. Our previous study looked at crocidolite from several sources. The present study considers the amphibole anthophyllite found in many places in the world. This mineral, regardless of source, does not show the same variation in fiber width found with crocidolite from different areas. All anthophyllite fibers that have been mined may be classified as thick and populations exposed show very low levels of mesothelioma. We suggest the most likely explanation is related to the fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Beneficiation studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to develop a process for concentrating phosphate minerals from the altered rock of the Phosphoria Formation. This report describes research on intermediate - and marginal-grade ores from southeast Idaho, The process developed consists of attrition scrubbing and sizing to produce a coarse concentrate; desliming at about 800 mesh (18.5 microns); flotation of the fine sands; roasting of the combined concentrates for removal of organic carbon and combined water; and leaching with SO2 for removal of magnesium and nonapatitic calcite. Results of continuous tests on three different ore types showed that approximately 80 percent of the available phosphate can be recovered at a grade suitable for phosphoric acid production. While leaching with SO2 is not necessary for all ore types, it is an important step in purifying concentrates containing excessive magnesium.

A geologic investigation of mineral resources in South Carolina first began in 1825 when the General Assembly authorized Lardner Vanuxen to conduct a "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina." Vanuxen, South Carolina's first State Geologist, reported in 1826 on the limestones (marble) of the Piedmont which during those early years, were burned in many shall, scattered kilns in the region wherever suitable raw material was available. He also mentioned the possibility of using marl from the Atlantic Coastal Plain province for direct application and enrichment to the soil. Since before the year 1844 industrial minerals in South Carolina have been commercially produced literally from A to Z, asbestos to zircon. The first pub¬lished reports of actual commercial production, not just an occurrence, are referenced in Table 1 for 33 known industrial minerals and rocks in South Carolina. Known or suspected occurrences of undeveloped non-metallic mineral resources in South Carolina await future verification by geologic mapping, sampling (including coring), possible beneficiation, and market analysis. These industrial minerals and rocks include, but are not limited to, special, clay minerals (e.g. bentonitic clays, zeolites and others), sillimanite, argillite (lightweight aggregate), kaolin (alumina) and marl (underground storage and tunneling medium). In addition other non-metallic minerals, once mined but still worthy of reconsideration, include topaz (industrial), heavy minerals, barite, feldspar, and monazite. Finally, possibilities for new reserves, as an expansion of existing mine output, might develop for fuller's earth, limestone (lime), sericite (finely divided mica), vermiculite, kaolin (paper coating and filling, other filler), and metallurgical gravel. Official South Carolina data from the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1974 indicated a total value of mineral production of $105.2 million. The study explored a new combination amine collector (XK-28) that can obtain better flotation index and defoaming rate for magnetic iron ore. A pure quartz mineral test indicates that dodecylamine, XK-I, or XK-II has good collection effect on quartz and their best flotation pH is in the range of 6–7. The experimental results of a combination collector (XK-I:XK-II = 2:8.) show that the separation effect for quartz and magnetite is better than that of a single collector. The single factor for actual mineral test shows that when the combined reagent is used as the collector, the best conditions are pH = 7, 90 g/t dosage, and XK-I:XK-II = 2:8, which is consistant with the pure mineral test. The difference for dodecylamine as a collector is that the optimal dodecylamine dosage is 60 g/t. Under the best conditions of actual ore test, dodecylamine and XK-28 are respectively used as the collector to compare the flotation indexes. Study results indicate the magnetite grade using XK-28 as the collector is higher by 3.02% than that of using dodecylamine, recovery is increased by 1.92% over that of using dodecylamine. Based on the measurement results of zeta potential, uses of XK-28 can slightly increase the zeta potential difference of quartz and magnetite to enhance the flotation effect. The mechanism of action between the XK-28 collector and the actual ore from the Gongchangling plant is physical adsorption, and this adsorption also has hydrogen bond formation. Contact angle results shows that XK-28 improves the hydrophobicity of quartz better than dodecylamine. Compared with dodecylamine, XK-28 is more sparsely arranged on the surface of the foam. The foam produced by the XK-28 collector has better air permeability and it is more likely to merge and disappear with bubbles.

Phytotechnologies use plants to remediate various media impacted with different types of contaminants. These technologies can be implemented either in situ or ex situ. The affected media in which phytotechnologies can be applied include soil, sediments, groundwater and surface water. They are best applied at sites with shallow contamination of organic, nutrient, or metal pollutants that are amenable to one of five treatment options: phytoextraction, phytotrans-formation, rhizosphere, bioremediation, phyto-stabilization or rhizofiltration. Phytoremediation can be used along or, in some cases, in place of mechanical cleanup methods. Phytoremediation can be used to clean up metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and landfill leachates.
