This study outlines implemented tactics and results for community empowerment through participation in questionnaire surveys, educational programs, and discussion on sustainable sourcing from new critical raw materials (CRMs) projects. Utilising questionnaire surveys, including the Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS), the research gathered public opinions from Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Zambia, receiving 1,068 responses. These responses addressed various social, economic, and environmental issues related to CRM projects. Feedback from educational courses with participants from over 25 nations and public events provided additional insights. The collected data and feedback offer crucial input for advancing sustainable and responsible CRM sourcing strategies in these regions.

Scope of Section The physical characterization of an ore or mineral mixture in such detail that mineral processing may be effectively applied to create more useful products is one part of the technology of sampling and testing. In addition, the evaluation of the multitude of separation processes, both physical and chemical, combined with ancillary opera¬tions and performed on samples at a laboratory scale, is another part of the testing procedure. Although analytical techniques provid¬ing quantitative determinations of elemental compositions are an im¬portant and necessary supplement to any testing program, that field of endeavor is a well-developed, separate entity beyond the scope of this Section. Sampling procedures cover the practice of selecting representative quantities of test materials in the field to evaluate mineral deposits, and extend to techniques of obtaining process samples in slurry and bulk ore as part of process evaluation. The same techniques are appli¬cable, of course, to standardized methods of metallurgical accounting. Sampling is also an important facet of successful on-line measurement of slurry properties such as assays and particle size in the practice of automation. However, the sampling methods in this case can be different from those needed for precise testing and accounting pur¬poses. Sampling was well defined in Taggart's Handbook as "the opera¬tion of removing a part convenient in size for testing, from a whole which is of much greater bulk, in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested (e.g., specific gravity, metal content, recoverability) are the same in both the whole and the part removed (SAMPLE). The conditions of the more stringent definition, that the sample shall be completely representative of the whole as regards all aspects save bulk, are practically never fulfilled when heterogenous mineral mixtures are sampled." Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing, Section 19, "Sampling and Testing," continues to be a very useful compendium of principles and techniques, particularly as applied to manual methods for han¬dling samples. In the intervening years since its last revision, substan¬tial progress has been made in both the theory and the techniques; thus, this current contribution is designed to be an extension of the earlier work, yet complete enough to provide procedural guidelines to methods of continuing validity. Although basic principles of testing remain unchanged, the meth¬ods of applying those principles have undergone great change. New testing equipment has become available, yielding a greater precision of results. Testing methods have been refined which, in many cases, allows for a valid scale up of flowsheet designs without the necessity of costly pilot or prototype plant development. Justification for a Sampling and Testing Program* The proper evaluation of a mineral property is a complicated process. It often is done on a team basis with the exploration geologist, mining engineer, mineral process engineer (extractive metallurgist), economist, and product utilizer (ceramist, chemical engineer, chemist, metallurgist, etc.) all represented. The mineral processing engineer is a key member because he can provide a go no-go answer to the question, "Can this ore be processed economically?" In addition, his judgment on the response of even the initial sample to processing can be an invaluable guide to the proposed process and its mutations. Since the capital investment and operating costs are so sensitive to the type of process used, the judgment of the mineral processing engineer forms an important part of the early evaluation of the profitability of a new mining venture. This early estimation of the processing approach is all the more important since, for some metalliferous ores, the capital investment for mill, smelter, water supply, and tailings disposal exceeds the cost of the mine. At present, for commodities such as coal, the reverse is true. There is a smaller capital investment for the coal preparation plant than for the mine. In general, both the capital and operating costs escalate very rapidly in the following order: gravity concentration of alluvial deposits (e.g., dredging), gravity concentration of lode ores, flotation, simple hydrometallurgical processes, and complicated hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The latter two processes may cost 100 to 1,000 times more per ton treated than processing of a simple alluvial deposit. This dictates that the valuable mineral be concentrated as much as possible to minimize the total tonnage treated in the more expensive operations. Within each of these ore-processing categories there is a wide range of process sophistication and hence of capital and operating costs. Perhaps the greatest variations are in the chemical processing of ores. These range from the simple leaching of a copper waste dump to very sophisticated hydrometallurgical processing of ores in increasing order of cost. Because the overall cost of a mining venture is so sensitive to the process selected, it is essential that the mineral¬ processing engineer evaluate the ore in the initial stages of the development of an ore body. As better samples become available, he must continually revise his estimate of the process to be employed. The sampling and testing process must be a necessary and continuing activity throughout the life of a project. One fundamental aspect of nearly all mineral deposits is the inherent variability of the mineral assemblage and composition. A utopian goal of any processing plant is to have the process so flexible and so well-defined that an automatic process control system can optimize the economic recovery at all times. Since this is rarely possible, a continuing or at least a periodic testing program is desirable. Variables to be considered are: 1) Ore body inconsistencies. 2) Zonal variations. 3) Feed variations from mining plan or methods. 4) Variable performance of processing units due to wear. 5) Seasonal or other changes affecting processing conditions such as water quality, temperature, etc. 6) Changing market conditions for product quality or byproducts. 7) Technological advances in processing methods or equipment. 8) Increasing demands for environmental control. 9) Changing economics of competitive processes, of supplies, of capital investment vs. labor costs, etc. Sampling Procedures Preliminary Guidelines for Sampling Ore Deposit Studies. t At a very early stage, it is essential that the mineral processing engineer receive a sample of the ore. This may be a portion of the diamond drill core or a split from the trench, pit, churn drill, channel, or sheet sample. Even a grab sample may have some value, but it should be selected by the mining engineer or exploration geologist to be as representative of the ore body as possible within his best judgment. The sample delivered to the process engineer should have been subjected to as little prior crushing as is practical since fine sizes are difficult to concentrate. In addition, finely ground ores are readily oxidized and thus may give misleading test results. Furthermore, ground samples may make it impossible to eval¬uate either the comminution or the coarse-gravity concentration pro¬cesses. For an initial evaluation, a good deal may often be learned from a sample of only a few pounds if that is all that is available. To obtain the maximum information from a sample, its selection should be carefully discussed with the mineral processing engineer. In addi¬tion to being as representative as possible, the mineralogically distinct samples should be carefully segregated rather than composited. Since drastically different processes are often needed to process samples of differing mineralogy, considerable care and time must be exercised during this sample collection step. The segregation of samples showing gross mineralogical differences, such as the oxide caping on a sulfide deposit or a laterized zone, is easy. It is the more subtle changes in mineralogy that can often elude the field man. Yet these differences are often sufficient to dictate that an entirely different type of process be used. Obviously, the selection of these initial samples for ore testing and mineralogical studies requires that it be done by a man of consider¬able experience and judgment. While the mining engineer or field geologist is collecting these samples, he should also note and convey to the processing engineer such details as water quality and availabil¬ity, terrain, potential mill location, tailings-disposal areas, case of transportation, etc. As the property is developed with additional drill holes, adits, etc., larger and more representative samples will be required to develop the ore-processing flowsheet more adequately. If pilot-plant studies are required, a very large sample may be necessary. Though the type and amount of sample collected for flowsheet development investigations vary widely, gathering a representative sample of the ore body is a prime requisite for any process development effort. The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

The shut-off value for a panel cave mine determines when a draw point will be shut-off and mining will cease from that draw point. Using a shut-off value strategy for a panel cave mine is similar to using a cut-off value strategy for an open-pit mine. This paper will discuss how to choose an appropriate shut-off value strategy that an engineer can use when planning a panel cave mine to increase the net present value (NPV) of the project. Using a shut-off value equal to the mining and processing cost will provide the total mining reserves for a panel cave mine given a specified footprint. When the net present value analysis method is used to compare one design to another then using a shut-off value greater than the mining and processing cost will generate a higher NPV. This strategy will replace the marginal ore at the top of a draw column with higher grade ore at the bottom of newly opened draw points. A draw column is broken material which sits above a draw point and it is mined to a specified height above the draw point. This height is called the height of draw (HOD). Varying the shut-off value over the life of the mine can increase the NPV even further. This strategy would have a high shut-off value during the early stages of a mine and low shut-off value during the later stages. If the shut-off value is too high then too many tonnes would be left behind the draw point and the overall value of the mine will be decreased. Also with a high shut-off value then the production target may not be maintained due to too many draw points closing too soon.

The U.S. produces about 34 percent of the world's aluminum yet must import 90 percent of the raw materials needed. There are abundant resources of aluminum-bearing minerals such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, shale, and dawsonite, but none of the numerous processes proposed for recovering alumina from them has yet proved economically competitive with the Bayer process using imported bauxite. To help develop an economically viable process for utilizing these resources, the Bureau of Mines is testing on a common basis several proudsing processing techniques. New improvements and approaches developed by industry and the Government are being evaluated on a mall scale to obtain enough information on which to form a judgment regarding the best processes for commercial adoption. A continuous miniplant having a feed rate of about 70 pounds per hour is being operated now to investigate the nitric acid process for recovering alumina from clay. Parts of this plant will be used subsequently for work on other processes for recovering alumina from clay, anorthosite, alunite, and dawsonite. Initial results of the operation and plans for the overall project will be discussed.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organizations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyze the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

With the evolving landscape of gold mineral resource development and utilization, the easily treatable gold resources are continuously decreasing, while refractory gold minerals are becoming the most important resources in the field of gold extraction. In these original ores, most of the gold is encapsulated in the lattice of pyrite and arsenopyrite, resulting in difficulty of gold transfer into the solution during the leaching process. The most effective method to solve the problem of insufficient contact between gold particles and leaching reagent is oxidation pretreatment before leaching. Different from traditional high-temperature roasting, concentrated sulfuric acid was used as both an oxidant and leaching agent in a sulfideencapsulated refractory gold ore to decompose the pyrite in the curing environment to expose the gold and improve the leaching efficiency. The experimental results showed that under the conditions of liquid solid ratio 3:1, curing temperature 240 °C and the reaction time 1.5 h, the weight loss rate and iron removal rate of the ore sample reached the highest value of 60.01% and 99.68%, respectively. The main phase of curing residue was Fe2( SO4)3, and silica was nearly the only phase after washing. At the same time, by combining the sodium thiosulfate system gold leaching method, the gold leaching rate increased from 3.67% to 81.30% before and after pretreatment with concentrated sulfuric acid.

Many developing countries with little or no previous environmental regulation are now promulgating air quality regulations which require facilities to demonstrate compliance with both process parameter based emission limits and ambient air quality standards. For many companies with operations in developing countries, an air quality compliance program at the facility level is lacking and these companies have very little background information to work with in developing a program for assessing and maintaining compliance. This paper will present a methodology for development of a comprehensive air quality compliance program for operations located in developing countries with new environmental regulations. The experiences of the authors in developing an air quality compliance program for a mining operation located in South America will be used as a basis. A program for meeting new air quality requirements can be developed in seven steps. The seven steps are: (1) regulatory review and project scope; (2) design and implementation of a baseline air quality monitoring program; (3) site visit, (4) development of a complete air emission inventory; (5) dispersion modeling; (6) compliance analysis and compliance plan; and (7) project completion.

The Freeport McMoRan Bagdad Solvent Extraction (SX) circuit is the oldest plant of its kind currently in operation. The plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second SX-EW operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) plant near Miami, Arizona. Over the years of operation, the configuration of the SX has gone through many changes to accommodate a variety of pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades and flows. Although modifications to the original plant configuration are numerous, the Bagdad SX circuit has maintained its general form consisting of multiple long and narrow settlers. The unique configuration of the Bagdad SX circuit presents a variety of operational advantages and challenges; however, it continues to operate at a level recognized in the industry as excellent.

A process has been developed for recovering the refractory metal values contained in mixed secondary source materials such as contaminated grinding wastes, oxides and sludges. The wastes are calcined with sodium carbonate in air to convert the refractory metals to water soluble Na2CrO4, Na3V04, Na2Mo04 and Na2W04. The base metals, Fe, Ni, Co and Cu, are converted to water insoluble oxides. An aqueous leach of the calcine effectively separates the refractory metals from the insoluble base metals. Co, Ni and Cu can be recovered from the oxidic residue by conventional processing methods. The leach solution is purified and then treated to recover the refractory metals as Cr203, NH4VO3, (NH4)6Mo7024?4H2O and H2WO4. The purity of the products is sufficient for their use in many metallurgical applications. The Na+ values in the leach solution are recovered as Na2CO3(or NaHC03) and are recycled to the calcination step. It is shown that the process can accommodate a wide range of feed compositions and generates a minimum of aqueous effluents.

The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

A comprehensive understanding of the effects of autoclave configuration (batch, semi-batch, continuous) on the residence time necessary to achieve a target conversion is a prerequisite for design of commercial scale autoclaves. Particle size distribution, mineral and reagent concentrations, temperature and mixing also influence the conversion. This paper outlines the bases of using test data to predict performance of commercial scale autoclaves. Recommendations for coordinating test program design with selection of scale-up method are provided. Examples are given to illustrate the different levels of engineering effort needed to meet corresponding levels of design optimization and accuracy.

The general term "coal mine burp" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods, and are related to both geological factors and mining tech¬niques. Although no single set of circumstances is solely responsible for causing coal bumps, it is generally agreed that at least one of five conditions is necessary in order for then to occur: 1,2,3,4 (1) the depth of cover exceeds 500-ft., (2) the overlying strata are relatively strong and stiff, (3) the coal is structurally strong, (4) the floor does not heave readily, and (5) the mining method produces high stresses over a large area of the seam. Except for the last, these conditions relate to geological factors that are impractical to control. Consequently, methods of controlling or minimizing the occurrence of coal bumps usually are concerned with mining techniques. Coal bumps have been successfully controlled by both longwall and 'yielding pillar' mining systems 4. The longwall system is particularly effective in controlling bumps, but does not eliminate them completely, especially in strong coal seams being worked at comparatively great depths, say in excess of 2000-ft.5. Under such conditions, auger drilling or water infusion often prove helpful 5,6. These techniques are used to destress or otherwise alter the mechanical properties of the coal in an attempt to shift the peak "abutment pressure" away from the immediate vicinity of the face. Under 'normal' conditions, however, it can be expected that the coal near the face will be crushed under the prevailing high stress conditions and that the peak abutment pressure will automatically be shifted into the solid coal. In this context, coal mine bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with successive yielding of portions of the coal seam with progressive mining. Longwall and yielding pillar mining systems are effective in controlling coal bumps because they ordinarily do not allow the zone of peak abutment pressure to become 'surrounded' by destressed coal.

This paper summarizes the geomechanics programs conducted in two hard rock underground mining operations in the Western United States, between 1966 and 1981. The two projects were directed towards understanding the behavior of the rock masses, at the scale of the caverns. To this end, the emphasis was put on large scale field measurements, complemented by limited laboratory testing. The results of these observations were used to build realistic finite element models of the underground chambers. In the marble mine, at Crestmore, California, the models were applied to the structural optimization of the room-and-pillar pattern. In the granite mining, at Climax, Nevada Test Site, the models explained some unusual stress changes observed during excavation. Based on the large number of geomechanical techniques employed, specific conclusions and recommendations are offered regarding the quality, applicability, and usefulness of the various methods. The two case histories clearly indicate chat numerical models are extremely useful for a detailed understanding of the structural behavior of mine openings. To be realistic, these models must be based first and foremost on large scale field observations. The lessons Learned on these two projects also are directly applicable to the design and analysis of nuclear waste repositories in hard rocks such as basalt, granite, and welded tuff.

Tenneco Minerals Company is the division of the Corporation responsible for nonfuel minerals exploration, development and operations. Tenneco Minerals Company is headquartered in Lakewood, Colorado. Exploration offices are in Colorado, Nevada, Alaska, and Perth, Australia. We currently operate two gold mines in Nevada and a large underground trona mine and soda ash processing plant in Wyoming. The latter has a capacity of 907 000 tonnes per year of soda ash and is the subject of my presentation today.

The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45' to 50' toward the northwest. Discussion by A.E Agnew Strachan's paper summarizes a wealth of data on water-storage dam "incidents" published by USCOLD and ASCE in 1988, together with a review of tailings-dam incidents published by USCOLD in 1994. The data is summarized by text and 11 histograms. The histograms present a useful compilation of these data, although the patterns within the histogram blocks did not survive the Mining Engineering printing process - so their usefulness is impaired. Unfortunately, the text discussion is too cursory and does not highlight the significant relationships among the various causes of the incidents. Four paragraphs of text and Fig. 1 were devoted to water-storage dams, but the discussion is too sketchy, and Fig. 1 is unclear. Important statistics that could be uncovered are: •the total number of dam incidents tabulated were 500+, •earth embankments constituted 73% of those in operation and •incidents related to earth embankments were 75%, of which dam failures accounted for 24%, major repairs accounted for 42% and accidents accounted for 34%. Strachan concluded that "the majority of the dam failures are associated with overtopping (p. 49), and that the majority of incidents are associated with spillway and other facility structures" - although this is difficult to discern from Fig. 1. Confusion regarding Strachan's use of the terms "dam failures" and "incidents" is compounded by his use of "failures" and "accidents" in one paragraph of his Introduction section followed by his use of "incidents" in the next paragraph. Getting to the meat of Strachan's important paper, the tailings-dam incident survey (USCOLD, 1994), the connection between Figs 2 through 11 seems obscure. First, in the four paragraphs of introductory material, one learns that "incidents consisted of failures, accidents, seepage and other incidents of performance that did not meet design criteria" (p. 50). One does learn the helpful caveat that "structures not related to mill tailings were not included in the review" - so that the Buffalo Creek (West Virginia in 1972) and Aberfan (Wales in 1966) coal-mine failures, together with the ongoing metal-mine remediation work at Summitville (Colorado) do not muddy the waters of his paper. Anthracite preparation developments, particularly in the early days of the anthracite industry, formed the basis for the modern coal preparation plants that have become so essential to the coal industry today. The anthracite industry, from early in the 19th century until relatively recently, was a leader in mining, preparation and marketing of coal, and played a leading role in the development of the industrial America we know today. Anthracite was discovered in America in about 1760--the story of Necho Allen is well known--but the rediscoveries leading to mining operations took place about 50 years later. The Wurtz brothers in 1815 at Scranton, the Smith brothers at Wilkes-Barre in 1807, Beach in Hazleton in about 1814, and Boyd in 1816 at Shamokin were all instrumental in promoting early mining and marketing of anthracite (J3. The early canals and railroads were built for the specific purpose of moving anthracite to the market areas. Eventually, the industry grew until, in 1917, it reached a production zenith of a little over 100,000,000 tons, representing about 20 percent of the total coal output in the United States. Almost half of the anthracite produced that year was consumed for domestic heating, a utilization that had dominated the industry for almost 100 years. Initially, anthracite had to be used by gunsmiths and blacksmiths, after which had followed the consumption of extensive quantities for railroads, blast furnaces and foundries, and electric power generation. Most of the markets have been lost to coke, oil, and natural gas. Near the anthracite regions, however, significant quantities are still used for domestic heating, power generation, carbon black manufacture, blending with bituminous coal to make metallurgical coke and fuel, and for other industrial purposes. Thus, anthracite production has not been entirely committed to history, but remains an active industry that follows modern practices in the mining, preparation, shipping, and utilization of a fuel that is still a valuable adjunct to the national economy. In fact, its inherent low sulfur content may make it an important fuel of the future. Estimates indicate there are reserves of anthracite to last for 300 years at a consumption rate of 50,000,000 tons/year. Anthracite Preparation Yesterday A 170-year history of the anthracite industry obviously is not the purpose of this discussion. A complete history of anthracite preparation, the rather unglamorous step in the processing of "mine run" hard coal to make it suitable for the user, is also not practical. Hence, the purpose of this report is to trace the development of some of the most important processes used through the years to meet a part of the demand for energy developed by our modern society. Anthracite preparation in the early days of the industry consisted solely of separating slate from the coal, by hand, underground (Z). This method prevailed for almost 20 years until wrought iron hand rakes were introduced to separate the large and small sizes. Shortly thereafter, the first attempts were made to size and clean the coal aboveground. The coal was dumped on a perforated cast iron plate, and men used sledge hammers to break the larger pieces into smaller sizes suitable for the market. The smallest sizes--that is, the material that went through the plate--were thrown away because they had no value at that time--a concept that existed for many years and actually was the basis for the subsequent "river" coal production and the many silt banks which are landmarks in the anthracite region. The larger sizes, at that time, sold for 50 cents per ton. The Batten breaker, or roll crusher, was invented in 1844, followed soon thereafter by the Snell-Diehm breaker (A). The latter had disadvantages, including excessive waste and fixed product size, but it later was improved in these respects. A breaker was also developed at Minersville, Pa., at about the same time that processed 200 tons of coal per day, using roll crushers and circular screens (1). Handpicking, from the beginning of anthracite preparation, was an important part of the cleaning process and was still being practiced as late as 1950. It was this process that involved the "breaker" boys of coal region lore. How much good handpicking accomplished depended on how much impurity was present in the coal--the more the impurities, the greater the reduction in ash. Thus, high-impurity streams were significantly improved, whereas picking of relatively clean coal was mainly to show an effort to make a quality product. As indicated, picking is largely a visual operation. It was and is wasteful of coal in the larger sizes since some good coal is always associated with the bad. However, it was probably much more effective' in the larger than the smaller sizes.
