Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

The Bond standard grindability test provides a Work Index that is widely used to estimate the energy required for grinding, but the test cannot be applied to fine materials such as plant tailings and middlings. For such materials, a comparative grinding test must be used in which a reference material from an operating plant is ground in a laboratory mill to determine the 'equivalent' energy consumption per revolution of the laboratory mill. As the Bond grindability test mill and its operating conditions are specified, its equivalent energy consumption per revolution should be a constant, here designated as B. Once B has been determined, the mill can be used to estimate the grindability of fine materials without the need for reference materials. A value of B can be calculated from any Bond grindability test, and 245 tests that were conducted at Mintek were examined to determine its value. A wide range of values was found, but most of them were grouped around 198 x 10- 7 kWh/rev, which is taken as the best estimate of B that is available at present. Values of B that are not close to this figure are obtained from materials for which the Bond grindability test gives misleading or 'spurious' Work Indexes. These spurious Work Indexes lead to the apparent departure of B from its true value. Some limitations of the Bond grindability test arise from its use of a mill without litters and of screening, instead of classification, to close the circuit.

Four 22%Cr series duplex stainless steels alloys containing varying nickel contents of approximately 5, 7, 9 and 13% were melted in a vacuum induction furnace, hot rolled, solution annealed and water quenched. Their corrosion behaviour was investigated in sulphuric acid and sodium chloride solutions using a potentiodynamic polarization technique. Increasing nickel contents have appreciable influence on their corrosion behaviour. Polarization curves show similarities in the uniform corrosion behaviour of the alloys in the solutions and a significant difference in their pitting behaviour in chloride environments. Alloy 2209 generally exhibited highest resistance to uniform corrosion while 2213 displayed distinct and best pitting corrosion resistance. Their corrosion behaviour were attributed to the influence of nickel on phase modification, microstructural refinement, and the probably types of films formed in different environments. The failure of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) results in the discharge of significant quantities of hazardous waste material into the natural environment. Research studies relating to slope instability have identified physical mechanisms such as rainfall-induced erosion, liquefaction, and shear failure as the main triggers. The generation of transient pressure waves and the mobilization of pre-event water in the unsaturated zone have been found to trigger shallow landslides in natural hillslopes. In this paper we review these physical mechanisms, known as groundwater ridging (GWR) and the Lisse effect (LE), from other studies. Previous researchers have explained both these phenomena through field and laboratory observations, numerical modelling, as well as conceptual discussions. These case studies demonstrate the impact of rainfall characteristics on the generation of transient pressure waves that rapidly increase the phreatic surface and change pore water suction. Reference is also made to the influence and behaviour of physical porous medium characteristics on the establishment of a continuous water phase that facilitates the transmission of an induced pressure head. However, previous studies fail to recognize the possibility that the pressure increase in pre-event water through pore air propagation could cause slope instability in tailings dams. The authors suggest that the physical properties and hydraulic behaviour of unsaturated porous tailings media make it susceptible to GWR and the LE, resulting in the creation of a potential failure plane.

A new graphical method termed the ?Design Curve Diagram? (DCD) has been developed to analyse non-Newtonian pipe flow data by relating the plastic Karman number to the plastic Reynolds number. Since the plastic Karman number is directly proportional to the pressure loss gradient and the plastic Reynolds number is directly proportional to the velocity, the DCD is essentially a non-dimensional pipe flow curve. This makes the DCD conceptually easier than the commonly used Hedström-Moody diagram. While, the DCD was developed for the analysis of yield plastic fluids (e.g., Bingham plastics), it is equally applicable to Newtonian fluids.

The effects of shaft pillars left in deep-level hard-rock mines during the extraction of tabular deposits were studied some time ago, resulting in the formulation of design principles and procedures, which have been used with success in the design of shaft pillars in the deep-level gold mines of South Africa. The method has not yet been utilized in the design of shaft pillars in shallow and moderately deep hard-rock mines. The purpose of the present study was to remedy the situation since a great number of deposits are worked at those depths. The object of this paper is to present governing equations for the components of stress and differential movement as derived by use of an elastic model. The pillar is taken to be circular in the plane of a horizontal deposit. On the basis of the numerical results obtained, a study was made of the distribution of the vertical strain and tilt along the axis of the shaft, and of the vertical stress along the shaft and across the pillar. In every case investigated, the most adverse geometry was taken into consideration. By use of an empirical criterion and the results of some in situ observations, the determination of pillar dimensions and differential displacement components for South African gold-mining conditions is demonstrated. Pillar dimensions for shallow and moderate depths are compared with those accepted for deep-level conditions.

Mining and plant practices can benefit from preconcentration of UG2 platinum ores in a dense medium separation (DMS) plant. The main benefit of DMS is the selective discard of waste from the feed stream, thus improving project economics while reducing the power and water requirements for processing. On the mining side, with the correct combination of variables, implementing DMS as a pre-concentration step can reduce cut-off grades and, as a result, increase ore reserves. In addition, the use of DMS technology gives the mine team the opportunity to consider alternative mining methods for an operation. The challenges of balancing the mining tonnage, methods, and resulting grades with the process plant size, recoveries, and DMS discard volumes have resulted in the development of a model to optimize value on new projects or existing operations. This paper will focus on these benefits from a mining and plant perspective, quantifying the water and power savings, and look at the economic benefits of preconcentration and the effect of metal prices, plant feed grade, and DMS efficiency in different mining environments.

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in the lead and zinc industries, as an efficient and highly flexible pyrometallurgical reactor with accompanying excellent environmental performance. For the processing of lead and zinc bearing feed materials twenty one (21) Ausmelt furnaces are now in operation, under design or under construction. With recent increases in the value of both lead and zinc and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of resources, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources as well as metal containing residues has substantially increased. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values from such sources. This has for example culminated in Ausmelt?s commitment to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This paper describes Ausmelt?s recent developments in the fields of lead and zinc processing, as well as further investigations into new processing areas, including the direct smelting of zinc concentrates. Ausmelt?s TSL Technology can now be regarded as Best Available Technology (BAT) for metal production.

The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

This paper takes a personal look, through the author?s own experiences, at the implementation of innovations in the narrow-seam, hard-rock mining environment of South Africa?s mining industry over the past 40 years. A number of examples are used to illustrate some of the successes and failures over this period. More importantly, the examples are used to illustrate that the bulk of the investment for these projects should have been applied in a manner that could have achieved more sustainable results. The use of the word ?technology? in this context is also examined, as it is the author?s contention that only measuring the performance of machinery fails to encapsulate the potential of the entire system describing the scope of the innovation being implemented. These experiences and observations are projected onto the current backdrop of upheaval in the relationship between key industry stakeholders and the sustainability challenges facing areas of the mining sector in the South African economy. The paper concludes with some opinions on where attention can be focused in order to develop new thinking that can be applied for the safe and economic extraction of the nation?s mineral wealth.

Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals¬-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

The Copperbelt areas of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have recently been seeing the development of a significant number of new projects. Due to the current economic climate, some of these projects have been delayed but the region remains an important resource for copper and cobalt for future years. Many of these projects will utilize an agitation leach followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning to recover both copper and cobalt. The flowsheet route for copper is fairly well established while the processing options for cobalt vary considerably depending on the final product (metal or salt) the operator wishes to make. The mineralogy of ores in the area is typically associated with high gangue acid consumption during the leaching process. This has resulted in acid availability to the area being constrained and acid prices have risen accordingly. Agitation leach circuits, typically, have a tight water balance which needs to be maintained and a bleed of process liquor needs to be continuously removed from the circuit in order to maintain this balance. This bleed, typically, contains fairly high levels of acid and requires neutralization prior to tailings disposal or secondary metal recovery. It is, therefore, desirable to minimize the acid concentration in this bleed stream in order to decrease total acid requirements and neutralization costs for the process plant. An in depth case study by Cognis and Bateman Engineering evaluated three different flowsheets with the aim of determining relative operating costs between the three alternatives, together with differences in plant capital cost requirements.

The School on the Accounting for Gold, which was organized under the auspices of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy by Dr Hugh E. Bartlet, Consulting Metallurgist of Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company Limited, was held at the South African Nature Conservation Centre at Delta Park, Johannesburg, on 15th to 17th May, 1989. It was attended by 178 delegates, including 2 from the OK and 4 from Zimbabwe. A total of 19 papers were presented covering the components of gold-accounting procedure, sampling techniques, and new sampling technology.

Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. The Pooncarie Project is located in the Murray Basin region of Australia. This region is a potential new mineral sands province. Due to the geological environment and the lithology of the deposit, these deposits have some technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to their successful development. Within the Pooncarie Project the Ginkgo deposit will be developed first. The technical challenges it presents include its geographical isolation, the requirement to remove substantial quantities of overburden as well as the processing issues raised by the highly weathered nature of the ilmenite family of minerals. Ore characterization bench scale testwork and bulk sample pilot plant programmes have been carried out and the data obtained used to design flowsheets for both the wet plant and mineral separation plant circuits with the flexibility to enable these plants to handle the variable heavy mineral assemblage. In addition to the solving of the processing challenges, technical issues such as removal of overburden for the minimum unit cost, the use of hyper saline water in the dredge pond and the provision of infrastructure, have had to be addressed. None the less, the orebodies making up the Pooncarie Project have many positive features including low slimes content, good rutile and zircon grades and the ability to recover most of the ilmenite family of minerals into acceptable TiO2pigment feedstocks. The development of the project is set to proceed with the establishment of mining operations on the Ginkgo orebody feeding a mineral separation plant at Broken Hill. The initial shipment of products is expected to occur in early 2005.

A strong incentive exists for the coal-preparation engineer to improve plant efficiency by modifying circuits and upgrading process equipment, since these result in lower production costs and more valuable plant products. At the Grootegeluk Coal Mine, it was found that the overall plant efficiency could be improved by modifications to the dense-medium circuits, the installation of additional process equipment for the recovery of fine coal, and improvement of the fine-material processing circuit. Apart from these modifications, there is still potential to increase the plant efficiency, particularly in the utilization of plant waste, the recovery of slimes, and even the improvement of cycloning performance as a result of new cyclone design. This paper points to the potential wealth locked up in existing coal-preparation plants, and shows how the coal-preparation engineer, with new technology at his disposal, can unlock this wealth.

Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office.
