The ARM 1100 was described in a paper presented at the 6th International Symposium on Mine Mechanization and Automation in September 2001. It started operation underground at Rowland Shaft in early 2002. This paper covers the results of those trials that resulted in more than 1 100square metres of UG2 being mined.

VERSLAG- REPORT No. 1365 STUDIES OF INCIPIENT FUSION IN THE SYSTEM CHROMITE- MgO- Al2O3-SiO2-C 5th January, 1972 Investigator: N. A. Barcza SYNOPSIS A fundamental study was made of twelve chromite ores by use of a thermobalance under atmospheric and reducing conditions. It was found that their thermal behaviour under atmospheric conditions can be related to the mineralogical composition of the chromite spinel and the gangue. The overall mechanism of reduction with solid carbon over the temperature range of 1 200 to 1 500°C was shown to be diffusion of carbon through the reaction product. The effects of additions of fluxes and variations in particle size on the kinetics and mechanism of reduction were determined. It was shown that carbon monoxide does not reduce chromite ore up to temperatures of 1 550 °C, and it can therefore be eliminated as the diffusing reducing species. However, the reaction product of reduction, namely a mixed carbide of iron and chromium, was shown to be an effective reducing agent for chromitc ore, while also facilitating the transport of carbon. VERSLAG - REPORT No. 1380 AN ELECTROCHEMICAL MODEL FOR THE LEACHING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE 10th January, 1972 Investigators: C. R. S. Needes, M. J. Nicol SYNOPSIS A correlation between the rate of leaching of UO2 and the electrochemical properties of the oxidant concerned has been derived. This correlation is found to be borne out by experimental results. Certain effects observed in UO2 leaching and hitherto unexplained have been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. Experiments have shown that the mixed potential of a UO2 electrode gives a measure of the rate of dissolution of UO2. Its significance to commercial practice is discussed. CONCLUSIONS (I) The dissolution of UO2 in the presence of a number of oxidants can be explained in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. (2) The mixed potential of the UO2 electrode is a measure of the rate of UO2 leaching. This principle could be used in the control of industrial leaching operations. (3) A simple treatment has provided a mathematical basis for a fundamental correlation between the rate of U02 dissolution and the chemical properties of the oxidants concerned. This relation has been found to agree well with experimental results. (4) A number of phenomena occurring during the leaching of UO2, hitherto not explained in a satisfactory manner, have now been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism.

The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. Since 2005 Two Rivers Platinum Mine has set out on an initiative to actively monitor and control ground conditions on a daily basis, by making use of borehole cameras and pro-actively amending the support and mining strategies based on day-to-day observations of the hangingwall conditions. Today the borehole camera observations form part of the Rock Engineering Department?s daily function, and the size and frequency of falls of ground and ensuing accident rates have been drastically reduced since implementation of the system. The Two Rivers Platinum fall-of-ground management system aims to support 100% of the possible fallout thickness, based on ongoing data gathering and interpretation, thereby ensuring safety and limiting support cost.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

Electrical tomography has developed rapidly over the last few years in its sophistication and practical use to enable three-dimensional information on the distribution of phases within flowing mixtures to be observed1. This paper reviews the current state of application from the industrial perspective, drawing on applications case studies based on scaling studies in the laboratory right through to installations on plant. In the laboratory, applications have looked at scale-up of mixing2 processes involving gas-liquid and solid-liquid suspensions3 with a particular interest in verifying computational fluid dynamics simulations or in checking scale-up design4,5. In the processing plant, the circumstances are usually bespoke and may range from simple detection of the degree of homogeneity of a flowing mixture through to the need to measurement a sophisticated batch process such as crystallization, sedimentation, filtering and drying. Examples drawn from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries will be presented and related to the benefits that can be gained through application of the method.

Mr Chairman, members of the executive committee, the sub-committee, distinguished speakers at this opening plenary session, delegates, affiliates, ladies and gentlemen. It is with pleasure that I have been called upon today to make these opening remarks and officially welcome you al at this auspicious assembly, the Fifteenth Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Not only am I pleased to open the proceedings at this plenary session but for me to do so at Sun City in the North-West Province makes me doubly pleased. It is my wish that al delegates and their companions will enjoy the activities that are planned throughout the Congress and leave here with minds refreshed and stimulated by the technical sessions and memories enriched by being in such a unique and truly delightful setting as exists here at Sun City. The mix of delegates present reflects CMMI activities in many countries throughout the world-Australia, Japan, China, United Kingdom and South Africa among others. When it comes to mining and related activities, South Africa has a place at the top, a dominant role in platinum, gold, chromium, vanadium, dimension stone, coal and so forth, and here in the North-West Province we can proudly declare that some 25 per cent of the revenue from minerals in South Africa, namely R47 billion come from this area. Furthermore, we lead in the production of platinum group metals with 94 per cent of South Africa&apos;s total sales and thus hold first place in the world, 46 per cent of dimension stone sales, 32 per cent of chromate and 25 per cent of gold sales.

AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

It is well known that carbon management is essential for minimising soluble gold losses in carbonin- leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. Even so, carbon measurements remain predominantly a manual operation with a low amount of control and automation around CIL and CIP reactors. Carbon inventory, i.e. knowing the carbon concentration in each reactor, is crucial for good carbon management. CarbonSense, a novel in-situ measurement system, was therefore developed for continuous monitoring of the carbon concentration in each reactor and paves the way for more advanced control in gold operations. The carbon management and optimisation system is based on Outotec® HSC Sim dynamic process simulations where each process component is modelled in detail. Generated models are validated with real data from a particular operation. The simulator will allow for the carbon control sequence to be realistically tested and the efficiency optimised by controlling the feed and discharge pumps in a hazard- and risk-free process environment. Furthermore, by combining CarbonSense and Outotec® gold courier (online soluble gold measurements) continuous feed-forward and feedback information can be obtained. The optimiser will then define the best running parameters based on the cost function of gold production versus intrinsic factors such as utility costs and adsorption time. Eventually, the application can be installed parallel with a real process island and it can be continuously calibrated with real-time process data. The dynamic model will then create future predictions for the entire process island. The example case presents a CIL circuit, which is simulated using Outotec® HSC Chemistry Sim and operated through Outotec® ACT (Advanced Control Tool) application. Advanced process and equipment analytics have been around for a while. However, with accessible IT infrastructure and site maturity, it is possible to analyse, monitor, and control processing plants and equipment easily. These various disparate systems provide different reports requiring the involvement of various personnel and attention to different reporting platforms. For efficient harnessing of the systems? capabilities, as well as effective improvement and monitoring of process and equipment, a single point of entry is required. A process and equipment optimization solution was required at a concentrator in South Africa, focussing on the product stream of platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate from the UG2 Reef. The investigation of data to identify strategies for optimization was required to allow visibility into plant operations to guide operators, an easier method to identify process loop problems, identification of imminent equipment failures, and advanced process control to optimize throughput and stability. A collaborative effort between the client and General Electric Intelligent Platforms (GEIP) investigated data-driven solutions to each of the problems. With the focus on process optimization and asset monitoring, as well as equipment monitoring, a combination of approaches was utilized to address the various problem areas that were identified. Each was implemented separately in the control layer of the plant IT infrastructure. The integration was done in a centralized web-based reporting tool that integrated the detailed results from the various solutions. On the process control side, monitoring of control loops was included by calculating performance statistics that were reported daily to identify sub-optimally performing control loops and indicating potential problems. The advanced process control solution for this site includes a surge tank controller, stabilizing flow through the flotation banks, and preventing the surge tank from overflowing or running empty. Equipment monitoring was investigated, for preventative maintenance, by making use of statistical data models to indicate imminent equipment failure. These predicted alarm events included the cause for failure, drilling down, and allowing focus on a specific variable for preventative action. The results included a more stable flow through the mill, with fewer stoppages due to surge tank overflows or running empty. The causes for process drift could be identified and operators could react early. Alarms warning of equipment failure 2½ and 4 months in advance were identified in an offline analysis.

Stress-corrosion studies on materials used for surgical implants * by C. R. THOMAS and F. P. A. ROBINSON Samples of Vitallium (a cobalt-chromium alloy), 316L stainless steel, and titanium T318 were subjected to the boiling magnesium chloride test so thattheir susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking could be determined, and their behaviour under service conditions was then assessed. Stress-corrosion cracking was confined to the stainless-steel samples, while gross pitting was detected in the samples of forged Vitallium. It was concluded that the use of stainless steel should be avoided for long-term surgical implants. Surface imperfections on the stainless steel are generally the cause of pitting, from which stress-corrosion cracks are sometimes propagated.

In conclusion, he thanked the organising committee, the authors and the contributors, and introduced the author of the first paper. The following papers were presented:- &apos;The future development of the Iron and Steel Industry&apos; by J. P. Coetzee (Published in the Journal March 1971). Among those who contributed to the paper were Dr Bleloch, Dr K. Gebhard, Dr Way and Professor Müller. The main point made by Dr Bleloch related to the reserves of coking coal and of coal for power generation this in country and he deduced that in South Africa we are critically short of coking coal. On the basis that 4 million tons per year of coking coal are consumed for our present steel production, over 16 million tons would be required to meet the anticipated expansion in steel output by A.D. 2000. This must be set against the grim forecast made by the Coal Advisory Board in 1967 that our national reserves of coking coal will be exhausted before A.D. 2000. This gives tremendous significance to the development work presently being carried out by Iscor on alternative methods for coke production. On the other hand the blast furnace may have to be replaced by an alternative process for the reduction of iron ores, e.g., the use of rotary kilns followed by electric arc smelting. Dr Bleloch also expressed grave forebodings about the reserves of bituminous coal, pointing out that with present methods of mining the recoverable coal in any given reserve is in general only 50 per cent of that reserve. He stated that in the past seventy years great quantities of coal have been forever placed beyond the reach of mining by being undermined by extraction of lower seams or lost by being burned. A final point made by Dr Bleloch was the fast rise in the capital investment in a fully integrated steel plant, the figure having risen in the past decade from just over R200 to R350 per ton of finished steel per annum. Dr Gebhard spoke of the direct reduction processes for iron making pointing out the difficulties of securing a high percentage of reduction and the relatively high cost of smelting in electric arc furnaces. The use of backfill has important environmental control implications which, although frequently overlooked, can be both beneficial and problematical. Where backfill is widely used, the reduction in stope heat load and improved air utilization influence the overall mine ventilation and refrigeration requirements significantly. A programme of work examining in detail all the environmental consequences of backfilling is currently underway at the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of the Research Organization of the Chamber of Mines. This paper gives an overview of the work and presents some findings. In so doing, the environmental implications to be considered when backfilling are highlighted.
