Dating seafloor mineralization at hydrothermal centres of submarine arc volcanoes is important for understanding deep-seated volcanic events that can produce deposits rich in base and precious metals. The activity ratios, 228Th/228Ra, 228Ra/226Ra (Bq.Bq-1) and 226Ra/Ba values (Bq.g-1) are used for dating barite- rich seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) in the age ranges 0.3 ? 12 years, 3 ? 35 years and 500 ? 15,000 years, respectively. Thus, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit and, ultimately, its capacity for sustainable extraction, can be estimated. 226Ra/Ba and 228Ra/226Ra values have been measured in relatively young chimneys that were collected, 1998 to 2006, from hydrothermal sites at Brothers and Clark volcanoes (Kermadec arc) and East Diamante volcano (Mariana arc) to check these initial ratios, essential for calculating ages for older mineralization at the same sites, were not varying significantly. We found that the 226Ra/Ba value for fresh SMS mineralization at the Brothers NW caldera and East Diamante hydrothermal sites have been reasonably stable for 6 years and 2 years, respectively. At both sites, the 228Ra/226Ra value for fresh SMS has been stable for 5 years. This was established from young chimneys where the measured 228Ra/226Ra value could be corrected for radioactive decay using the age derived via the 228Th/228Ra method. However, long-term stability of the initial 226Ra/Ba and 228Ra/226Ra values has yet to be proven. These isotopes of Ra are used as a proxy for better understanding of the transfer of Ba from deep magmas to the seafloor, via the circulating fluids of the hydrothermal system.

"Bimodal lithostratigrafic assemblages are of significance in volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS)-hosted lithology. The largest deposits are either bimodal-siliciclastic or maficsiliciclastic, and the presence of a significant siliciclastic component in the host stratigraphic succession favors large VMS deposits (e.g., Franklin et al., 2005; Barrie and Hannington, 1999). In the case of modern sub-seafloor VMS deposits in arc-related settings, the majority of deposits have been discovered in association with calderas or cauldrons (Halbach et al., 1993; Ishibashi and Urabe, 1995; Iizasa et al., 1999). These features are formed by the explosive eruption of silicic volcanoes, so that silicic host rocks and/or pumiceous volcanic clasts are generally observed around the ore deposits (e.g., Binns and Scott, 1993; Fiske et al., 2001). Caldera-like and graben-like morphological features therefore attract attention in geophysical surveys. However, silicic lithologies (dacite and rhyolite) normally contain only small amount of metallic elements (e.g., a few ppm to a few dozen ppm of Cu), whereas mafic rocks, such as basalts and basaltic andesites, contain significant amounts of metals (e.g., a few hundred ppm of Cu). Thus, the origin of metallic elements in VMS deposits associate with the silicic host rock remains unclear.The Iheya North Knoll is a volcanic complex in the middle of the Okinawa Trough. It is located in a young and actively spreading back-arc basin that extends for 1200 km behind the Ryukyu arc-trench system (Lee et al., 1980; Letouzey and Kimura, 1986). Several active hydrothermal fields have been recognized in the Iheya North Knoll. Mineralization at the Iheya North Knoll is characterized by relatively juvenile features consisting of VMS deposits with associated hydrothermal alterations to various degrees. Massive sphaleriterich sulfides at this site, recovered for the first time from beneath an active seafloor hydrothermal system, strongly resemble the black ore of the Kuroko deposits of the Miocene age in Japan (Takai et al., 2011). From February 11 to March 17, 2016, the SIP CK16-01 (Exp. 908) D/V Chikyu cruise was conducted at Iheya North Knoll and the rifting center of the Iheya Minor Ridge area, middle Okinawa Trough. The Iheya Minor Ridge area is also an active hydrothermal field, located ~30 km southeast of the Iheya North Knoll. In this area, basaltic rocks are widely distributed, and drilling has confirmed that the basaltic materials continue to ~120 m below the seafloor (Kumagai et al., in prep)."

Activities of Brazil in relation to deep seabed mineral resources development are carried out in the framework of two main national programmes. They are: (1) the Program for the Assessment of Mineral Resources of the Brazilian Continental Shelf (REMPLAC) and (2) the Programme for Prospecting and Exploration of Mineral Resources of the Area in the South Equatorial and Atlantic Ocean (PROAREA). REMPLAC aim to research and increase knowledge of the seabed and sub-soil, as well as to collect the necessary information to allow integrated management of the Brazilian Continental Shelf. Among the various research projects undertaken or planned on the framework of REMPLAC are: geology of the Brazilian continental shelf and adjacent ocean areas, organized in geological information system; digital bathymetric charts of the inner continental shelf at 1:100,000 scale; systematic research for sands, gravels, carbonates; placers, phosphorites, coal, cobalt-rich crusts, polymetallic sulphides and Gas hydrates. The PROAREA was prepared with three initial projects starting in 2010. One of them, the Project Geology of the South Atlantic and Equatorial organized in a Geographic Information System, aims to collect, collate, integrate and make available in a single environment all geo-referenced data and information available in Brazil and abroad on geology and mineral resources of the South Atlantic Ocean. The other two projects are for the research of cobalt-rich crust and polimetallic sulphides. These programme are developed with the participation of various segments of government agencies, research institutions and public enterprises. Marine scientific research and other activities from REMPLAC and PROAREA are carried out in partnership between the Geological Survey of Brazil, national research institutions from several Brazilian universities and the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation from the Brazilian Navy.

A shipboard research system capable of operating in waters of up to 2,000 meters has been designed and implemented by the Hawai'i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) of the University of Hawai'i. It uses a remotely-operated ocean bottom survey camera system, an ROV, the Pisces V submersible, and a submersible emergency recovery system, all aboard the 222- foot R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. All systems are operated from the stern of Ka'imikai with a mounted Caley telearm and articulated A-frame system. The system was designed for multipurpose use of the ship for launch and recovery of the Pisces V submersible on a lift recovery line (with or without diver assistance), or night-time operations with an electro-optical cable using either the HURL ocean floor sidescan or photo and video system operated at 10 meters above the ocean floor. The 1.14-inch diameter cable is also used to operate an ROV system. The garage/ROV system can also act as a submersible rescue system with a submersible lift capability. The ship is equipped with a SeaBeam and shallow penetration sediment profiling systems. This integrated system approach to deep ocean floor research will make it possible for HURL to carry out research pro- grams on seamount ocean resources and ocean chemistry and climate in Hawai'i and the equatorial Pacific.

Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, but no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27°51S / 63°56E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at a water depth of 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. Massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed; these chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground as well as pathways for the fluid circulation.

A C-CORE study on behalf of the government of Newfoundland identified the inner continental shelf off northeast Newfoundland as having a relatively higher potential for hosting placer gold than other parts of the inner shelf. Under the auspices of the Canada-Newfoundland Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development, the Geological Survey of Canada conducted a three-year project to map the distribution of surficial sediments and the abundance of placer minerals (particularly gold) from White Bay to Cape Freels. Much of the study area is a fjord coast, with steep rocky slopes and scattered gravel beaches. The extreme east, from Hamilton Sound to Cape Freels, has a wide, shallow inner shelf, sandy beaches, and extensive coastal dunes. Relative sea level was high in the late glacial period. It has fallen continuously in the west, but in the east it dropped to -19 m, before rising to within several metres of the present level by 3 ka. In terms of surficial sediments and processes, five zones are identified: (1) Deep offshore deep basins that contain thick postglacial mud overlying glacialmarine gravelly sandy mud. This zone is below a depth of 370 m in White Bay, 300 m in the Notre Dame Basin. 2) Basin transition zone in which the sea bed has been eroded by currents, so that glacialmarine sediments are exposed in places. Winnowing has formed an uppermost layer of muddy gravel. There is a slight potential for enhanced levels of fine particulate gold, but the gold would not be exploitable. (3) Iceberg impacted zone Above 200 m the keels of icebergs impact the sea bed, causing furrowing and pitting. Furrows predominate in deeper areas, and pits are concentrated at the inner boundary of this zone. Iceberg turbates have developed in shallow waters (60-100 m). Combined with winnowing, iceberg turbation could enhance the potential for concentration of fine particulate gold, but not into economic quantities. 4) Wave dominated zone Above approximately 60 m the sea-bed sediments are highly mobile due to waves, currents, and iceberg impact. The Chilean part of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, situated south of latitude 62o S, is within that country?s Región de Magallanes y Antártica, and separated from the remainder of Chile by the Magellan Strait. In recent geological history several phases of Quaternary age glaciers originating in the Andean and Dawinian Cordilleras eroded assumed primary gold deposits and entrained their related alluvial deposits. Piedmont glaciation extended to the east and south over m0st of the land and beyond the present-day coastline into extensive areas exposed during the resulting lowered relative sea level. During interglacials particulate gold incorporated unevenly in the widespread drift, till and moraines was fluvially released and concentrated into streams and flood gravels. Coastal erosion enriched various beaches with gold. From 1868 onwards Tierra del Fuego hosted a major gold rush whereby early, labour intensive, beach mining eventually developed into inland dredging. But continued mining activity was interrupted and then terminated by several external factors. Most miners, always seeking ?greener pastures?, joined the rush to the new discoveries in the Klondike (1896) and Nome, Alaska (1899). In 1904 the international boundary, established in 1881, became the subject of a major dispute not settled until 1984, The Panama canal?s opening in 1914 turned Tierra del Fuego, previously on the Pacific-Atlantic shipping route, into a remote backwater. World War II brought opposing foreign naval forces to the actual islands where most gold had been taken from the beaches. It also crippled the dredging industry which lost its coal supply and never recovered. Nevertheless, some small scale mining continues to this day.

The first, profitable, marine placer mining started with tin 100 years ago but no major industry developed until the mid-20th. Century. Dredging at sea yielded cassiterite in both South Thailand and Indonesia, and remains an important state-run industry in the latter country. Malaysia and Russia have also contributed production, and the coastal waters of Tasmania and England have been explored. Marine placer deposits of gold have been examined in New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Russia and West Africa. Philippino deposits were dredged during the 1930s. Fifty years later, at Nome in Alaska, gold was recovered by dredging from the offshore, and the technical/economic benefits of a seabed-deployed crawler were first demonstrated. Off the coast of Namibia placer diamonds were recovered by airlift mining during the 1960’s, but De Beers effectively started the existing marine diamond industry in 1989. The Wirth drill and a crawler continue to be used by the company, and plans recently have been announced for operations in South African waters. Other commodities such as mineral sands, platinum group minerals, and chromite have been investigated offshore in several worldwide localities.

All known results of research activity on ferromanganese manganese crusts point to that crust are characterized by notable variability of thicknesses and composition. It is possible to separate few levels of variability. The most evident is the first level of parameters variability, which is manifested in various regions of the Ocean, and connected first of all, with an age of submarine mountains, a host objects for a crusts. It was proved by many authors, that most powerful crusts are connected with submarine mountains of Cretaceous age. [1]. Crust thickness at the Magellan Seamounts reaches, for example 12-15 cm, sometimes exceeds 20-22 cm. Thicknesses of Hawaii Archipelago or Tuamotu crusts in 3-4 times less. Biostratigraphy studies of crustal sections at the Magellan Seamounts already show, that its main part started to form in the Late Paleocene. Four layers with well expressed features in structure and composition of a layer are separated in the section. From foot to top: Late Paleocene ? Early Eocene layer I-1, Middle-Late-Eocene layer I-2, Miocene layer II and Pliocene ? Quaternary layer III. Relics of more ancient Campanian ? Maastrichtian ore layer [2, 4] were discovered. It is evident for example, that Oligocene mountains could not be a host for two lower layers in the crust section.

In October-November 1993, the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering, Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Victoria jointly carried out reconnaissance surveys at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland. Pine Cove is the site of a multi-year study examining the environmental impact of a shallow water small-scale marine placer gold mining operation. The reconnaissance survey data collected will be used to develop a multi-year environmental effects monitoring (EEM) program for Pine Cove, Baie Verte, but more generally an EEM protocol for shallow water small-scale marine placer mining, which meets the requirements of Canadian government regula¬tors such as Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The Pine Cove mining operation is currently scheduled for the summer of 1995, and will use two mining methods: a hydraulic suction dredge in shallow water (<10 meters) operated by a scuba diver, and a hydraulically actuated clamshell dredge in deeper water (-30 m). A centrifugal concentrator will be used to extract the heavy minerals from the mined marine sediments, and the tailings will be returned to the sea floor via a suspended discharge pipe. The reconnaissance work at Pine Cove included geophysical, geochemical, oceanographic and biologi¬cal surveys, providing data which will enable prediction of the potential environmental impacts of the proposed mining operation. The continental shelves occupy a vast area of Russia and contain complexes of commercial placer minerals. Of prime importance are Cenozoic placers of valuable minerals including gold, cassiterite, diamonds, chromite, platinoids, and minerals of titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, biogenic amber and fossil ivory (1). Commercial placer minerals are associated with shelf placer formation zones (SPFZ). These zones are located at junctions of marginal orogens and shelf troughs in morphostructures where upwarping, subsidence, and sign-variable neotectonic movements are not significant. The SPFZs are characterized by ancient buried leveling planes with mantles of waste, series of wave-cut aggradation terraces on land and beneath the sea, and drowned and buried stream valleys. The occurrence of mineral placers in the SPFZs was caused by endogenic mineralization and exogenic placer hosted formation. Concentrations of commercial biogenic minerals are associated with areas of burial of biogenic material (release of resins by plants and theriofauna thanatocoenoses) and with their transition zones. Since the Oligocene, alternations in marine transgression-regression have dominated the shelf areas. This has resulted in the formation of polygenic placers. Climatic conditions are of great importance: warm and humid climate in the Paleogene-Neogene changed to colder climates in the late Pliocene (polar type sedimentation; formation of permafrost strata and sea glaciation). These events are responsible for the regularity in placer formation during the Cenozoic in which the early Cenozoic (Eocene-Oligocene-Miocene) and late Cenozoic (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene and late Pleistocene-Holocene) epochs are prominent.

In response to anthropogenic climate change, the way in which we use and generate energy is changing. To facilitate these developments, it is essential that we increase and diversify the supply of ‘E-Tech’ elements essential for cleaner energy generation and more efficient usage. The vast majority of these materials (e.g. cobalt, lithium, niobium, platinum group metals, rare earth elements and indium) come almost exclusively from mining and new resources must be found and developed in order to secure supply and meet the demands of the future. Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts are rich in cobalt, tellurium and rare earth metals, and are common on seafloor hard grounds at water depths over 1000 m. The mining of both FeMn crusts and nodules is potentially viable dependent of the balance of cobalt and nickle prices (Martino & Parson, 2012), however, crusts need to be at least 4 cm thick with cobalt contents of at least 0.8% (International Seabed Authority, 2008). The difficulty for those wishing to exploit these resources is firstly finding them, and secondly assessing their potential remotely. Such capability would not only save time and money, but also allow mining operations to be more focused, reducing needless destruction of seafloor habitats from exploratory mining or mining of noneconomically worthwhile deposits. In this contribution, we examine the distribution of crusts on a single Atlantic Gyot (Tropic Seamount), the morphology of FeMn crusts, their variable growth patterns and the characteristic geophysical response from crusts in various datasets, including ship based 60 m resolution multibeam and high resolution bathymetry, backscatter and sub-bottom profiler data acquired using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV).

"Advancing our knowledge about trace metal distribution and abundance provides insight into formation, alteration, and trace element enrichment processes of ferromanganese nodules and crusts. A fundamental understanding of these mechanisms, in turn, has implications for the selective recovery of critical metals and the development of sustainable hydrometallurgical techniques. Synchrotron-based X-ray Fluorescence (SXRF) is a powerful, state-of-the-art analytical tool that can examine geochemical features of Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, such as abundance and distribution of trace elements, in an integrated and efficient manner. By correlating trace element composition and Mn oxidation states in these highly complex samples, it can be determined whether these parameters are related to the Mn oxide mineralogy (vacancy content of crystal lattice) and chemistry.In this study, eleven Fe-Mn nodule and crust samples from three circum-Australian locations – the South Tasman Rise, Lord Howe Rise, and Coral Sea – were analyzed at the Australian Synchrotron, Victoria, Australia. Micrometer-scale spatial resolution of geochemical features, such as concentric growth structures and element distribution, was achieved with high sensitivity (Fig. 1). For instance, Ni could be detected at 10's of ppm to 1 wt% levels. Information on other redox-sensitive trace elements, which are present at 10-1000 ppm levels (e.g., Cu, Co, Ti), were gained by means of fully quantitative elemental composition maps."

Both the S.W. Pacific and Caribbean island arcs are host to submarine hydrothermal mineral deposits, the former more so than the latter. In the S.W. Pacific, the whole gamut of such deposits occurs on the sea floor, sulphides, silicates, Fe and Mn oxides, whereas during the limited studies to date in the Caribbean only hydrothermal Mn oxides have been found to occur on the sea floor there in any abundance. Comparisons between the respective Mn oxides are thus the most fruitful at the present limited stage of our knowledge of Caribbean submarine hydrothermalism. Southwest Pacific hydrothermal ferromanganese oxides and their possible relationships to underlying sulphide mineralisation or bedrock anomalies (the geochemical window concept) has been a fruitful field of research in recent years. Certain element enrichments in crusts may be indicative of underlying mineralisation (Rogers et al. 2001). However, more recent studies on buried hydrothermal crusts in the S.W. Pacific (Cronan et al. 2002) have shown there to have been postdepositional diagenetic uptake of elements in them, and thus these elements cannot be used with any confidence in geochemical exploration for buried sulphide deposits unless sediment involvement can be eliminated.

A thorough appreciation of the origin, formation, preservation and geometry of marine sand and gravel deposits is central in demonstrating that their extraction by dredging does not affect coastal processes or marine life. Geological evaluation underpins wave, tidal and sediment transport modeling and assists in predicting the nature and extent of seabed change during and after dredging. Marine sand and gravel deposits in the English Channel, southern North Sea and parts of the Irish Sea are of predominantly periglacial fluvial origin and record long histories of valley and floodplain cut and fill associated with Quaternary climatic and sea level oscillations. In the Bristol Channel, the influence of marine transgression and tidal dominance in sorting proglacial outwash deposits is evident in the distribution of sandbanks, scoured channels and gravel lags of this region. These deposits are relict and are unrelated to coastal sediment dynamics. Their extraction leaves seabed depressions which monitoring shows remain unfilled. The resultant offshore bathymetric changes and sediment removal in over 10 m water depth are not transmitted to the coastal zone as beach drawdown, wave height increases or sediment starvation. Applications for new aggregate dredging permissions in UK waters must be accompanied by an EIA and need to make a convincing case that the dredging will not affect rare or declining species and communities of marine life. Seabed recovery rates post dredging are now investigated and understood with reference to geological setting and the uniqueness of the sediment/biological character (biotope). Investigation of the continental shelf by the Industry and others reveals the large extent of gravel-dominated biotopes relative to commercially viable deposits.

Recent exploration demonstrates that hydrothermal systems related to upper mantle ultramafic outcrops are common in the modern ocean. Most sites are located on slow spreading ridges with a low magmatic budget. Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide (VMS) deposits, associated with basalt, along the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are volcanically controlled near the topographic highs at the center of the segments. Three preferential settings are identified for ultramafic sulfide mineralization: 1) Off axis, on rift valley walls, near the amagmatic ends of the segments; 2) Non-transform offsets and 3) Ultramafic dome structures at the ridge transform fault intersection. The upper surface of these domes is often interpreted as a detachment fault. Three processes are considered for driving hydrothermal cells in ultramafic rocks: 1) regional heat flow at the ridge axis 2) Cooling of a deep gabbroic intrusion and 3) exothermic heat produced during serpentinisation. Along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, four types of ultramafic hydrothermal mineralization are observed: 1) High temperature (>350°C) sulfide mineralization related to low pH fluids, (ex. The Logachev field at 14°45? N and the Rainbow field at 36°14 N); 2) Medium temperature carbonate chimneys (<100°C) related to high pH fluids (ex. The Lost City site at 30°N); 3) Low temperature diffuse venting associated with extremely high methane discharge and pervasive alteration and silicification of both volcanic and ultramafic rocks (ex : The Saldanha field at 36°34 N); 4) Stockwork mineralization and quartz veins with sulfides related to gabbroic intrusions within ultramafic rocks (15°N). When compared to mineralization in a basaltic environment, sulfide deposits are enriched in copper, zinc and specific elements related to an ultramafic rock source such as Ni and Co. They are also significantly enriched in gold which, unlike in basaltic environments, has a bimodal occurrence both in low temperature Zn-rich assemblages and in high temperature Cu-rich mineral assemblages. The Cu-Zn-Co-Au deposits along the Mid Atlantic Ridge seem to be more common than on land where few similar VMS deposits are known. We consider that ultramafic VMS deposits on slow spreading ridges constitute a specific marine type of mineralization that is less easily than back arc deposits, incorporated into the continent during obduction processes.

Fine-scale geochemical, mineralogical, and structural variations in ferromanganese crusts are believed to be the long-range records of paleoceanographic conditions and geological events on the small to global scales in the world oceans, which is useful in reconstructing marine environment. The chemical profiles of thick hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts and nodules were determined by ICP/ES at 2-3 mm intervals at several locations over the Japanese Islands, Magellan Seamounts, Marshall Islands, and South Pacific Basins, together with Be-10 dating. We found general trend of Co enrichment (or high ratio of Co/Mn) in the upper layers of crusts, or outer layers of nodules, which formed in younger period probably after the late Miocene. This general trend of higher Co concentration in the surface may be true over the western to the Pacific, but local variations in growth patterns and shorter-range fluctuations in chemistry and structure were found as well. The growth rate is sometimes three times faster at the shallower depth even in a single seamount. The in-depth fluctuation of Co is well correlated with the ratios Mn/Fe ratio and Ce/La, suggesting changes in redox conditions during the growth of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts.

During the last few years autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology has evolved from concept demonstrators towards commercial products. The driving forces are the move for energy exploitation towards deeper waters, naval applications and the Internet driven need for more intercontinental underwater communication cables. Other applications emerging for the future will be within environmental research and monitoring and deepwater exploration. Deepwater developments beyond the continental shelf will require the same level of survey data quality and intervention access as established for shallow water. The potential for cost savings is two folds. Firstly, there is a reduction in the survey cost it self and secondly there is a considerable cost saving by avoiding over design of subsea installations due to lack of sufficient documentation of the field. In this scenario, there is an increasing understanding that underwater robotics and in particular AUVs will play an important role in future survey and subsea engineering work. The AUV as a free swimming underwater survey sensor carrier has several advantages compared to cable controlled ROV?s and deep towed systems: The paper prepared for the ?Underwater Mining Institute 2003? on Jeju Island, Korea will focus on the HUGIN AUV concept and field results to date.

With the world’s growing demand for metals, seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits are now seen as a possible mineral resource that could contributes to secure metal supply for human needs. SMS deposits are characterized by high concentrations of base metals and at some place high contents of precious and rare metals. Since 1977 and the discovery of the first high temperature (HT) hydrothermal vent and its sulfide mineralization and high biodiversity, more than 300 sites are known today. If the exploration strategy for detection of active hydrothermal sites is now robust, their associated mineralization will not (and must not) constitute a potential target for deep-sea mining due to environmental concerns and technical limitations. Recent studies on SMS deposits are rather focused on extinct and buried mineralized sites characterized by a lower biomass. Several geophysical techniques to explore and detect extinct SMS (eSMS) and buried SMS (bSMS) have been developed (e.g. Kawada and Kasaya, 2017; Szitkar et al., 2017, 2014) using different approaches (e.g. regional or local scale; ship-based or using underwater vehicles) with several degrees of success or limitation. Here we present results from acoustic surveys performed on the TAG hydrothermal district during the BICOSE (2014) and LEVE-SMF (2016) cruises and direct observation provided by HOV (Nautile) dives carried out during HERMINE cruise (2017). Acoustic data were acquired using two different multibeam echosounders (MBES): the hull-mounted Kongsberg EM122 (12 kHz, R/V L’Atalante) and the ROV-mounted RESON SeaBat 7125 (400 kHz, ROV Victor) (Figure 1). After processing, acoustic seafloor backscatter data from both MBES provides complementary qualitative results in relation to the seafloor composition. The analysis of the seafloor backscatter data obtained by near-seafloor surveys with the high-resolution 400 kHz MBES shows a clear relationship between low backscatter strength values and areas covered with pelagic and hydrothermal sediments whereas high backscatter strength values are associated to pillow lavas and basaltic scree. Intermediate backscatter strength values are rather related to old and younger eSMS as well as to mineralization on TAG active mound.
