Evaluation of three dimensionally non-uniform strain distribution in rocks under various conditions such as in water or under freeze-thaw cycles is of significant importance to understand their complex deformations and fracturing mechanisms. For this purpose, we developed an image analysis method which can evaluate or “measure” the three dimensional (3-D) strain distribution in rocks. The proposed method utilizes the 3-D images of rock under initial and deformed configurations, which are obtained by some imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography (X-rayCT). In the proposed method, the obtained 3-D images are divided into multiple sub-regions of interest. For each sub-region, the strain is evaluated utilizing 3-D affine transform with unknown coefficients to be determined. In the first step, 3-D voxel level displacements at multiple representative points in each sub-region are computed by 3- D digital volume correlation technique between the comparison images and the initial-guess of the transform coefficients are obtained. In the second step, referring to the initial-guess of unknown transform coefficient, they were optimized in sub-voxel level by finding optimum digital volume correlation between the comparison images, which can evaluate the transform coefficients with higher precision. From the calculated transform coefficients, the strain was directly obtained through the spatial derivative of displacement based on affine transform. In this paper, along with the description of the proposed method, the evaluation of deformation in a lignite specimen due to immersion in water was presented as an application example. As the 3-D imaging technique, micro-focus X-rayCT was applied. The result showed that the induced dilatational strain field due to the initiation and extension of cracks in the specimen was clearly captured. Therefore, authors believe that the proposed method can be applicable to various problems in rock mechanics.

Microwaves are being applied industrially in a number of fields and possess a number of potential advantages that could be applied in extractive metallurgy. Microwave heating has a number of unique characteristics, which distinguish it from the conventional heating methods. In microwave heating, the absorption of energy occurs at the molecular or atomic level and therefore the heat is generated within the material itself. In conventional heating, the exterior temperature is usually higher than the interior, but with microwave heating, the temperature gradient is inverted and thus the interior temperature can be much higher than that of the surface. The energy densities in microwave systems can be relatively high and this in combination with the low thermal conductivities of oxide ores, can lead to very high internal heating rates. In this research, the application of microwave energy for the reduction of a nickeliferous silicate laterite ore has been investigated. The real and imaginary permittivities are the two fundamental properties which determine the microwave absorption characteristics of a material and these were measured for the ore, both with and without carbon additions using the cavity perturbation technique. The microwave heating and reduction experiments were performed in a 0 to 2 kW CTC microwave system. The effects of power input, processing time, sample mass and charcoal additions on the microwave absorption were investigated. Then reduction experiments were performed and the nickel grade of the magnetic concentrate and the nickel recovery in the concentrate were determined.

The program to increase production at Sherritt Gordon's Lynn Lake property, which began in 1956, included increasing the rope speed and the horsepower of the ore hoist at the "A" shaft. Because of the limited power sup-ply from the two 7,000-hp. hydroelectric plants, and the ? 3,600 hp. predicted for the combined hoisting requirements of the three production shafts, it was considered desirable to lessen the impact of this type of load on the relatively small power system by equipping all future hoisting arrangements with Ward Leonard direct-current drives. The manually operated 8-by 4-ft. hoist at the "A" shaft had a rope speed of 1000 f.p.m., and was driven by a 385-hp., 380-r.p.m. wound rotor motor with liquid rheostat control. This A.C. drive was replaced by a semi-automatic Ward Leonard direct-current drive with a 515-hp., 566-r.p.m., shunt wound motor, providing a rope speed of 1,500 f.p.m. During several months preceding the con-version, all possible preparations were carried out to keep the changeover period to a minimum, and this resulted in a total shutdown time of twelve days. The capability of the "A" Shaft hoist was increased from 109 tons per hour to 134 tons per hour, and both mechanical and electrical maintenance were reduced considerably. The total cost of the conversion amounted to $130,000. The hoistmen who had been required for the manual A.C. drive were transferred to the new Farley shaft, and the reduction in operating labour costs of the "A" Shaft hoist

"The construction of the new Scissors Creek shaft at the Rocanville mine, the first potash shaft successfully completed in Saskatchewan Canada since 1979, is summarized here. Located 15km from the existing Rocanville surface plant, this new 6 m inside-diameter, 1121 m deep service shaft was built for fresh-air ventilation and access. Shaft construction in the Saskatchewan sedimentary basin involves sinking through five different rock-types: glacial tills, shales, sandstones, carbonates and salts. The first four rock- types are all water-bearing, and the salts will dissolve in water. This results in five different sinking challenges and requires five different shaft lining designs. The upper 580 m of rock (the till – shale – sands sequence) was frozen before sinking, and grouting methods were used for water control through deeper carbonate levels. Challenges that were faced and overcome during shaft sinking are reviewed, and ideas that future operators working in sedimentary basin environments might consider in order to avoid these difficulties are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Nutrien Inc. (formerly Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. / PotashCorp) Rocanville potash mine in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada has been in continuous production since 1971. Devonian potash, formed approximately 380 Mybp, is mined in a sedimentary basin environment at approximately 1000 m depth below surface in this area of Saskatchewan. The predominant use for finished potash products is fertilizer: potash fertilizer is concentrated and nearly pure KCl (i.e. greater than 95% pure KCl). Currently 10 potash mines are in operation in Canada, all in Saskatchewan. In 2018 Saskatchewan mines produced ˜ 23 million tonnes of finished potash products, which is approximately 35% of World demand of ˜ 66 million tonnes for the year (e.g. Nutrien Inc., 2019).In November, 2007 it was announced that the Rocanville potash mine would be expanded to increase production from 3.0 Million tonnes per year (Mtpy) to approximately 6.0 Mtpy of finished potash products, requiring an increase in hoisting capability from approximately 9.0 Mtpy to over 18.0 Mtpy. The Rocanville potash mine has historically been accessed through two shafts: a production and ventilation exhaust shaft, and a service and ventilation fresh-air shaft located approximately 200 m from each other. All surface offices, processing facilities, etc. are situated near these original shafts.A very important part of the recent Rocanville expansion involved the construction of a new service shaft (6 m diameter, 1121 m deep) for fresh-air ventilation and access, approximately 15km west of the existing surface plant. Once this third shaft was completed in 2015, the historical service shaft was converted to a second exhaust and production shaft. Three shafts are now available for mine access, ventilation and ore hoisting at Rocanville. As of December 31, 2017, annual nameplate capacity for Rocanville was 6.5 million"

"Madawaska Mines Limited, incorporated in 1975 is the successor to Faraday Uranium Mines Limited. The history of the latter's mine development and corporate changes are outlined. This paper describes the geology of the Bancroft area and the rock types found in the mine, particularly the pegmatite which is the host rock for the uranium. The structure, mineralogy and distribution of the ore shoots are described with the method of grade control and mine development. The paper concludes with a summary of the production and mineral reserves.Location, Access, and PropertyMadawaska Mines Limited is located in Faraday Township, Hastings County, Ontario. The mine is in the N.T.S. quadrant 31 F/ 4, Bancroft sheet and near 46 degrees 01 minute latitude, 77 degrees 46 minutes longitude. The mine is one-half mile north of Highway 28, five miles (8 km) west of Bancroft, and is accessible by various highways from Toronto, Ottawa, Peterborough, and Belleville. (Fig. 1). A landing strip for small aircraft is located at the northwestern edge of Bancroft. Bancroft is a modern community with a population of 2,400. The company has the mineral rights to 2982 acres (1207 hectares) surrounding the mine workings and plant which are situated in the north parts of Lots 16 and 17, Concession XI, Faraday Township."

"A key element for a successful mining operation is the grinding circuit. It must be reliable, maintainable and must perform to or above design capacities for 95% of the time. Once chosen and installed major modifications are either prohibitive or very expensive. The selection of mills and drive system is probably the single most important decision made within the concentrator complex.Economic studies revealed that the optimum expansion for Lornex was a 68070 increase in plant throughput. This indicated that the new mill would have to be larger than the existing 32-foot mills.The Lornex ore has a wide range of hardness which has a great influence on mill throughput (Table 1). To smooth out the fluctuations, a blending program ha s always been in effect at the mine, coupled with ball charge control for the primary mills. As can be appreciated, an optimum balance is difficult to achieve. A sudden change to so ft ore with a high ball charge puts the mill into jeopardy with a constant speed drive.The blending philosophy would continue after the expansion, but with the addition o f a second primary crusher, it was envisaged to have the new mill process harder ore to maintain production targets. In theory, the new mill would have a proportionally larger ball charge than the existing mills.This scheme makes the new mill vulnerable for processing so ft ore for a fixed speed mill. Thus, variable speed seemed an attractive option.In early 1979 prominent mill manufacturers were invited to submit proposals for the new mill. Fixed and variable speed mills were to be considered with mill size ranging from 32-foot to 36-foot diameter. The proposals were to include the drive, ball charge, % critical speed, couplings, gears, etc. - the complete package. The recommendations were variable with most manufacturers submitting several alternatives. Recommended mill speed varied from 68% to 78% critical. The concept of variable speed was becoming more attractive, Lornex ultimately decided on a twin DC motor drive system for a 34-foot diameter mill.After start-up it was discovered that best throughput occurred at 78% mill critical speed or top speed of the drive motors. The motor speed range was adjusted upward from 186 to 200 rpm. Today the mills operate at 79% critical or a motor speed o f 193.5 rpm.Clearly the selection of the variable speed mill allowed the flexibility to optimize throughput."

The following notes deal chiefly with changes from steam to electric drives, or, in the case of the Bellevue pumps, from air to electric. Where electric power can be purchased or generated cheaply it can be used to advantage and is generally more economical than steam, especially in places remote from the central power-plant. Nothing could be more simple than the operation of electrical gear. It does not require a competent engineer constantly on the alert, oiling and watching bearings, and maintenance is at a minimum. The ease with which the current is transmitted from its source to where it must do its work is one of its greatest advantages. Transmission losses are very low. Generally speaking, the smaller the plant the lower the loss and 90 per cent, and better, efficiency is easily attained. In and around Bellevue 2300-volt, three-phase, is the standard distributing pressure; our power requirements and the distances transmitted, for the present, do not require more than this. Most of the heavier motors are 2300-volt .machines, which eliminates the cost and possible troubles of step-down transformers, and makes for a cheaper and less bulky motor. This applies to two fan, two hoist, and two compressor motors, the smallest being 75 and the largest 520 horse power. The standard pressure on power lines to all inside pumps is 550 volts, and 220 volts is general for the the tipple. While 110 volts is used for house and office lighting service, it is not economical around and in the mine. No matter what kind of device is used to lock and protect the lamps, they are invariably missing.

"Inco's Matte Separation Plant is a unique mineral processing facility having no process tailings stream. Each product is a high-grade concentrate with strict assay specifications which are defined by the downstream refining route. The most recent column application in the flowsheet, copper scavenging in the production of a high quality nickel concentrate, is described in detail. Testwork in pilot-scale columns (0.038 m, 0.051 m and 0.10 m in diameter) was used to develop a model of the copper scavenging system. This data was then used to simulate the performance of plant-scale equipment. The relationships thus established were confirmed by a series of plant tests in a 1.8 m diameter column. Column results consistently exceeded conventional cell performance. The modelling was extended to assess full plant production requirements and, as a result, a 2.1 m diameter column was specified for this application. Engineering design for this column is currently underway and the column is scheduled to be commissioned later in 1991.INTRODUCTIONMatte SeparationINCO's Matte Separation Plant is a part of the Copper Cliff Smelter complex near Sudbury Ontario. The flowsheet and the development of column flotation within it have been described previously (Feeley et al., 1987, Wilson et al., 1989). The plant feed is a synthetic Bessemer Matte from the Nickel smelter. This matte is slow cooled to promote grain growth and typically assays 46-52% Ni, 23-27% Cu. These elements are present primarily in sulphide form (Ni3S2 and Cu2S respectively) with some metallic alloy also precipitating from the sulphur deficient matte. Minor amounts of iron, precious metals, and nuisance elements are also present.The matte separation process is, in concept, relatively simple. Following magnetic removal of the metallic alloy from the feed, the flowsheet is designed to float a high grade copper concentrate from the nickel sulphide matrix. A simplified flowsheet of the process is shown in figure 1."

At the concentration plant of the Gol-E-Gohar Iron Ore Company (Iran) three 9 m × 2.05 m AG mills (fixed speed) are used in parallel in a dry operation. The performance of AG mills has been lower than the target value indicated by an increase in the product size (P80) from 450 µm (target) to 515 µm and low power draw (50% of nominal). By simulation it was found that increasing the liner lifter face angle from 7 to 30o while keeping the original lifter height (i.e., 22.5 cm) could provide an appropriate charge trajectory. When the proposed liners installed in one of the AG mills, the throughput increased by 27%; when 5% (v/v) balls were added the throughput increased by 40%. The product size also decreased from 515 to 501 µm.

"THE property of Red Mountain Mines Limited is located 11/2 miles north and west of the town of Rossland, in southern British Columbia. The mine is situated on the flank of Red mountain, famous in pioneer days as the site of a number of profitable gold-copper producers. Mining and milling commenced in May, 1966, and by the first of July the concentrator was treating close to its average design capacity of 400 tons per day. The following description of the property and its operations is divided into three parts, dealing respectively with geology, mining and milling.GeologyAll the known ore reserves of Red Mountain Mines occur on the Coxey claim, on the west slope of Red mountain. Although there are indications of molybdenite mineralization elsewhere on the Company's property, these have not been developed.The Coxey and adjoining areas are underlain by the Mount Roberts formation of the Rossland volca-nics. This formation consists of an interbedded series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, mostly brecciated and silicified near the ore zone, and all intruded by igneous rocks which occur in various forms, and vary in composition from basic to acid. The country rock in the vicinity of the mineralization seems to be mostly a volcanic, approximately andesitic in composition, and possibly a surface flow. There is much banding, some of which is undoubtedly due to tuff and agglomerate layers, and some to narrow, siliceous, sedimentary horizons such as the surface exposure of the main ""A"" orebody, much of which was a thin capping of greyish banded rock that looked like quartzite. The drill holes also intersected occasional layers of black, argillaceous quartzite, sometimes altered to a greenish colour. The whole assemblage has been silicified with varied intensity, sometimes to such an extent as to have obscured or obliterated the original characteristics. The mineralized zone has also been strongly brecciated, the fragments varying in size from less than an inch up to large masses, best described as a mega-breccia. Anomalous results obtained in drilling, such as sedimentary sections that do not appear in adjoining holes, may sometimes be due to the presence of these large blocks, no longer in their original position. The whole volcanic unit is thus very complex and confusing. For practical purposes, the ore may be said to occur in a greenstone formation with minor sedimentary interbeds and considerable later igneous material."

"Huge amounts of air pollution scrubber sludge have been generated during ferromanganese production using blast furnace. These residues have been historically deposited in ponds near steel making plants. They are very rich in zinc, manganese and lead (5 to 40 %) and also contain aluminum and iron. Considering the market value of these metals, brownfield sites can now be used as secondary resources. These ponds also have to be cleaned up to meet the environmental regulations.We have developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce valuable compounds of Mn and Zn and recover the final Pb residue by pyrometallurgy. The Zn and Mn compounds need to be pure enough to be economically valuable. Batch laboratory tests were carried out to determine suitable selective leaching conditions. The investigated operating conditions were acid concentration, pulp density and temperature. Optimal conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (95.9 %) were found using sulfuric acid and sodium metabisulfide. The final residue contained 14.8 to 23.8 % of Pb. Then, Zn was recovered in the form of ZnO or ZnS by precipitation and Zn metal by electrowinning, while Mn was recovered as MnCO3 with a fairly acceptable concentration of impurities.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese has been produced by pyrometallurgy in much of Western Europe for centuries. Use of wet scrubber to remove pollutant and dust particles from gas stream was common for most of these operations. Those residues contain high concentration of Zn, Mn and Pb. They have been left to decant in settling ponds installed close to the steel production plants. They now constitute heavily contaminated artificial soils. Those sludges are so contaminated with Zn, Mn and Pb that they can be used for metal production. Currently, no method is available to decontaminate these residues and recover Zn, Mn and Pb. Therefore, an approach considering these brownfield sites as secondary resource is in development. Doing so would achieve two goals, decontaminate the site and produce metals.. Impact of horizontal stresses on stability of underground workings in mines is a very important issue in underground mining. Identification of the initial state of stress in the rock-mass should be one of the main actions taken into account while designing and carrying out the mining activity in underground mines. The paper presents the tests on three dimensional stress pattern in Polish copper mines, owned by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. Group, carried out in 2012. The research program covered 7 measuring stands in two mines; their average depth was about 1000 m. The main aim was to identify the values and directions of horizontal stresses in order to optimize the extraction and to improve the safety. The overcoring method with the use of CSIRO HI type probe was applied. The paper also describes the measuring technique which was developed for the purpose of specific mining and geological conditions of KGHM mines, taking into consideration the natural hazards encountered there as well as technical and operational capabilities with regard to drilling equipment. The experience gained during the underground measurements and the issue of making such measurements in underground copper mines in Poland are presented in the paper. The stress patterns obtained during the underground measurements are of application importance for the process of designing the spacing of mine workings and improving their stability and mine support selection.

Abstract - The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temper- ature, the composition of the albitizing fluids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters.

"Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). Les données antérieures montrent que le dépôt d’Iso a une conductance comparable à celle de New Insco. Cependant, les données de MEGATEMII démontrent que le dépôt de New Insco a une haute valeur de la constante de décroissance, ce qui reflète une plus forte conductivité. La carte d’anomalies de MEGATEMII indique la localisation, la profondeur, le pendage et l’orientation des deux dépôts, ce que la carte d’anomalies antérieure ne montrait pas. Le rapport de signal à bruit de MEGATEMII est plus grand que celui des données de INPUT et de DIGHEM; de plus, les pics sont mieux définis. Les tests ont également permis une comparaison entre les fréquences de base de 90 Hz et de 30 Hz. Les données de 90 Hz se sont montrées utiles pour cartographier la partie du dépôt Iso dont la conductivité est la plus faible, tandis que les données de 30 Hz montrent clairement que le dépôt de New Insco est plus conducteur. "IT IS NOT necessary here to dwell on the fact that sulphur is currently in short supply. It may be well, however, to •point out that this •storage is not merely a temporary condition, but that, judging by trends in world consumption of sulphur, it may •be anticipated that requirements will double in the next ten years.Even with improved techniques for mining elemental sulphur in the United States and the new finds in Louisiana, there is much concern as to how these future sulphur requirements can be met. It appears necessary to .turn more and more to other sources than elemental sulphur for •additional production. The three major alternative sources were:(1) By-product sulphuric acid •from smelter gases.(2) Sulphur and sulphuric acid from iron sulphides.(3) Sulphur from hydrogen sulphide contained in natural gas. The Jumping Pound sulphur plant of the Shell Oil Company of Canada, Limited, is designed to produce sulphur by the •third of these methods.Jumping Pound is a natural gas field about 20 miles west of Calgary where Shell has a number of producing wells."

In the way towards sustainability, the next generation of efficient and heavy duty of Sandvik’s crushers, CH860 and CH865, are introduced for efficient crushing. As the secondary, tertiary and/or pebble crusher, these new crushers are designed to over perform in tough mining environment. Featuring higher crushing forces relative to the mantel diameter and 500 kW motor, combined with advanced automation system, i.e., sophisticated HydrosetTM and Automated Setting Regulation (ASRTM), combined with overpressure system with dedicated air supply in dust collar, etc., the new crushers provide higher safety, productivity, and reliability with the same foot-print of conventional cone crushers.Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills it makes sense to effort in fine crushing to save energy and protect environment. That has been the logic behind development and introducing stronger and more efficient crushers by Sandvik. The results on crushing hard iron and gold ores by CH865 have proven its efficiency in fine crushing at a higher productivity, availability and reliability rates through increasing throughput for defined size fraction and extended crushing chamber liner life.Within this paper the performance of the CH865 to deal with two different ores are presented discussed with a glance at how the downstream milling process can be benefited by saving energy and reducing the operation cost. In plant practice, the implementation of the new CH865 provides between 25 and 30% of the crushed ore in the size range of first step milling, i.e., < 2 mm, that offers opportunity for reduction in energy consumption in milling and even changing the process plant configuration by directly forwarded that part to gravity separation. Furthermore, potential of converting the rod mill to ball mill to improve productivity has been considered by plant engineers. Furthermore, some potential applications for such efficient crushers are brought into considerations and discussed. The new developments provide about 30% higher crushing force to efficiently deal with competent ores and pebbles. The CH860 and CH865 crushers are well suited to replace conventional secondary and tertiary crushers respectively; nevertheless, CH865 is virtual option for pebble crushing in SAG and AG milling circuits."

"AbstractThe slow progress of conventional geological reconnaissance of the northern Canadian Shield during the past twenty years clearly indicates the need for a radically new field technique. Operation Keewatin, involving the use of helicopters as the traversing vehicles, was planned and executed by the Geological Survey of Canada in response to this requirement.About 57,000 square miles of District of Keewatin, N.W.T., were mapped during the 1952 field season in appropriate detail for publication at 1 inch to 8 miles. The Operation disclosed about 14,100 square miles of Precambrian sedimentary and volcanic rocks ranging in •age from Archaean to Late Proterozoic. About 7,700 square miles of this area are underlain by greenstone. This work was accomplished in a field season of 113 days, including the spring break-up. Routine aerial geological observations were made from two helicopters flying about 300 feet above the ground; these observations were checked by more than 1,700 landings and about an equal number of aerial observations from heights of less than 50 feet. Logistical support was •provided by a Norseman aircraft on skiis or floats. Combined helicopter and Norseman flying time was about 990 hours. More than 1-00 square miles were mapped per helicopter-hour, and about 815 square miles were examined each day that both helicopters operated. The reconnaissance cost about $207,000, or $3.63 per square mile mapped.As a result of this trial use of helicopters there is now available a reasonably proven method whereby an acceptable geological reconnaissance of the barren grounds of the Canadian .Shield within the Districts of Keewatin and Mackenzie might be completed within a decade. Thus, within a few years, it could place at the disposal of the prospecting and mining fraternity data which, by conventional methods, might not be made available to this generation. Due weight must be accorded this time factor when evaluating the aerial technique."

This paper discusses modern practices in the extrusion of steel. Particular emphasis is given to a description of the Ugine Sejournet method of extrusion, involving the use of glass as a hot work lubricant. Other methods are also mentioned. A brief history of extrusion is presented; present practices in the quality extrusion of tubing and solids are described; and the future potentials of the) process as a tonnage producer are briefly discussed. The advantages of extrusion and the reasons for the use of a glass lubricant, as well as the various methods of using glass, are given. The process, as described, is being used in the manufacture of large commercial quantities of stainless steel tubing and sections. This extrusion process is an essential and unique means of forming such atomic-age materials as titanium, zirconium, molybdenum and other super alloys all of which are materials required in the creation of nuclear installations.

Although heap bioleaching has been recognized as an economic alternative for treating low grade mineral ores, the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes involved are complex. A detailed investigation into the dynamics of heap bioleaching processes has provided much insight into the underlying complexities, and has led to the development of a sophisticated modelling tool - HeapSim. This tool can be of great help in the design and operation of heap bioleaching processes. In this paper, the mathematical model implemented in HeapSim is examined. The model takes into account mineral kinetics, particle level effects, bacterial growth, oxidation and adsorption, gas absorption, pore diffusion, bulk advection, gas balance and heat conservation. Three case studies where the model has been applied are briefly discussed. "An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of column flotation versus conventional flotation for the recovery of molybdenite from a Newfoundland ore. The objective was to verify the claims made by the inventors of the flotation column, Messrs. Pierre Boutin and Remi Tremblay, that their apparatus reduces the entrainment of fine gangue and other mineral impurities in the froth product. The research included a factorially designed series of tests to determine satisfactory operating conditions of the column. These provided a basis for comparative flotation tests with column and Denver cells. In the course of the work, the action of a few depressants was studied. Results indicated greater selectivity in the column and reduced reagent consumption."
