Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. The great problem at Port Pirie and many other lead smelters has always been to keep the lead content of the slags down to a low level. This has been done in the past largely by empirical methods, the lead content varying from less than 1 per cent to over 4 per cent, the more usual figure being something under 2 per cent. Subsidiary to this, but of major importance in the future, was the extraction of the considerable quantities of zinc in the slag. At this stage little was known about the constitution of the slags apartfrom their chemical composition. Some early work on slag constitution was carried out in the B.H.A.S. Research Laboratories between 1919 and 1921, but except for a microscopic examination of a few thin sections the greater part of this investigation wasdevoted to the recovery of the zinc content of the slag by leaching methods.In 1949, therefore, it was decided to initiate a programme of fundamental research into the constitution and properties of the lead blast furnace slags. The information thus gained would give a clearer picture of reactions taking place in the slag, both in the blast furnace and during dezincing.There was also the hope that these results would lead to improved industrial techniques resulting in smaller lead losses, and, taking the long-term view, to efficient methods of producing zinc from the slags.A series of investigations was therefore begun at various centres over a period of time. The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

The New Zealand Steel Ironsand Slurry Pipeline was successfully commissioned in February 1986. The project includes 18 km of high pressure, polyurethane lined buried pipe. McConnell Dowell Constructors Limited has developed a coupling which has allowed this pipeline to be fully welded. The design and development of the coupling and its application on this project is discussed.

With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. Straits completed its Feasibility study on the Whim Creek Copper Project in 1996. At this stage WCCP provided Straits with an open pit mine - heap leach - SX-EW copper project to follow on from its successful Girilambone Copper Operation (GCC). Since this time Straits has continued to review WCCP investigating a number of development and production scenarios. The development of Whim Creek, early 2004 and is on schedule to commence copper production in the final quarter of 2004. On current reserves Whim Creek will produce approximately 17 000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum for three to four years, at cash costs of The paper will cover a general description of the project, the project development and key design issues. Additional construction related issues associated with the complete relocation of the GCC plant to Whim Creek will be covered in the conference presentation.

A panel cave using LHDs for ore extraction came into production at Premier in 1990 at a depth of 630 metres below surface on the western side of the mine in the BA5 mining block. A post-undercut mining sequence was used with all development on both the undercut and production levels completed prior to the undercut being advanced over the pre-developed drawbells. Support and rock mass damage on the production level was extensive as the undercut moved overhead. Undercutting and coarse fragmentation created problems. The mining sequence was changed to an advance undercut with the minimum of development and support undertaken on the production level prior to the undercut moving overhead. Only once the abutment stresses had stabilised were drawbells developed and final support installed. The height of the undercut drill design was decreased from 18 to 13 metres. The changes resulted in markedly less rock mass and support damage on the production level. Lessons learned in the BA5 mining block on the 630 level were incorporated into planning and scheduling the BB1E mining block which came into production on the 732 metre level on the eastern side of the mine in 1996. An advance undercut mining sequence was planned, undercut height was minimised and undercutting parameters were optimised in terms of the BA5 experience. Numerous problems still occurred. As the undercut area increased in size severe spalling from the cave back resulted in vertical propagation of the cave to a height of 30 metres instead of the planned 13 metres. The resultant coarse fragmentation created secondary blasting problems and an excess of undercut ore that had to be loaded and trammed, slowed the rate of undercut advance. The planned mining sequence was compromised and considerable support and rock mass damage resulted on the production level below. Once these problems had been overcome the undercut advanced at the planned rate and continuous caving initiated at the predicted hydraulic radius. At a later stage the unexpected ingress of water hampered undercut drilling and slowed the rate of undercut advance in a section of the cave. Leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and the overall face shape could not be developed as planned. The rate of natural horizontal cave propagation exceeded the rate of undercut advance and three undercut drilling tunnels were extensively damaged. More tunnel development on the production level prior to undercutting than was planned resulted. The slow advance of the undercut and high abutment stresses caused extensive damage to installed support and the rock mass on the production level, 15 metres below. Experience in the BB1E mining block on the 732 metre level has taught that an advance undercut mining sequence reduces damage on the production level markedly. Extremely tight control on the rate of undercut advance, leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and overall undercut face shape as well as extraction ratio, tunnel development and support sequence on the production level below is required. Premier Mine plans to implement a block cave at a depth in excess of 1000 metres within the next decade. All the experience gained on current mining levels together with data collection and numerical modeling is being used to plan the proposed mining operation. The geotechnical challenge of mining at this depth in weak rock has been identified as the greatest risk to the project. Challenges centre around adopting the correct mining sequence, limiting the extent of rock mass damage associated with undercutting and effective support. The hydraulic radius needed to initiate caving, fragmentation, drawpoint spacing, secondary blasting and the possibility of seismicity are geotechnical concerns that are being addressed. Results to-date suggest that a pre-undercut mining sequence with all development and support on the production level carried out only after the undercut abutment stresses have passed overhead will have to be implemented.

Some 800 analyses for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe, S, CaO, MgO, C02, Si02 and Al203 were used to examine the elemental constitution of the Mount Isa ores, and, for comparison, those of the Northern Leases area.Lead: zinc relations show little order from sample to sample, but means of large zones (Le. individual orebodies) show a highly linear inverse relationship. Lead: silver ratios are fairly constant from sample to sample, and means show a highly linear direct relationship.Sulphide sulphur appears to be related to carbonate and alumina abundance, sulphur decreasing systematically with increase in the ratio CO2:AI203. In all graphs involving members of the group CO2-A203-S the lead-zinc and copper ores conform to the same simple trends, confirming that the two ore types and their host rocks are genetically closely related. The earlier deduction of a volcanic-sedimentary origin for the sulphides of the Black Star orebodies appears compatible with present findings.On the basis of such an origin, the pattern of sulphide occurrence and mineralogy in the Mount Isa district is possibly related to the configuration f the upper surface of the "Eastern Creek Volcanics", the facies patterns of the overlying sedimentary rocks, and to the oldest faults affecting the two.INTRODUCTIONStanton (1962) described and interpreted the chemical constitution of the Black Star No. 2 lead-zinc and the 650750 copper orebodies at Mount Isa. The investigation has now been extended to the other principal orebodies of the area.The earlier study showed that the host rocks of the two adjacent Black Star orebodies were constitutionally closely related, and suggested that this was probably due to their original formation in contiguous zones of sedimentation. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project.  Broken Hills is an adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit, hosted in flow-banded rhyolites and overlying rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield. The 7.1 Ma deposit was the largest producer of gold in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield, and was one of very few economic deposits hosted in Pliocene rhyolites. This paper presents the results of a recent study in the upper levels of the deposit. Maps and cross-sections constrain structural and lithological relationships, and the lateral and vertical extent of a breccia pipe û the major feature of the upper levels.   Previous studies in the upper levels of Broken Hills have shown that gold and silver values are concentrated around and within a large breccia pipe, mined by a series of æcaveÆ stopes and in veins. Contour diagrams of Au-Ag data from channel samples indicate that the breccia pipe was a major fluid channel-way for mineralising solutions.   The breccia pipe deposits are part of the dynamic geothermal system that formed the Broken Hills ore bodies; they developed as a result of hydrothermal brecciation in areas of structural weakness within a rhyolite pyroclastic unit that overlies a massive rhyolite lava-flow unit. The main breccia pipe begins near the rhyolite/pyroclastic contact, having the shape of an inverted, inclined cone, and consists of silicified breccia, stringers of quartz, and irregular patches of clay-altered country rock. Smaller zones or pockets of hydrothermal eruption breccia are silicified and contain low grade gold in the matrix and in the adjacent silicified wall rocks.   Quartz has been classified according to its physical characteristics as seen in situ and hand specimens indicate that vein definition decreases upwards, perhaps as a result of changing lithological conditions and/or increasing proximity to the paleosurface. Hydrothermal quartz is widespread as veins and as a replacement mineral, or lining fractures and cavities and overgrowing rock fragments. Breccias contain vein quartz, but some quartz veins cross-cut breccias, indicating that vein and breccia formation was relatively synchronous and overlapped in time.   Disseminated gold-silver mineralisation is associated with vein quartz and silicic alteration of the wall rock within the breccia pipe. The auriferous zones are highly irregular and erratic, and sampling results show a wide range of gold-silver ratios, suggesting that highly volatile physiochemical conditions prevailed during mineralisation.

Morphological analysis of alluvial gold recovered from the same segment of a placer by four common commercial methods indicates that gold shape and the presence of quartz intergrowths or sulphide overgrowths substantially influence the recovery efficiency of each method. The amount and types of gold saved by each method varies according to the different hydrodynamic conditions under which each of the methods operates. Reverse circulation drilling has the lowest efficiency and preferentially loses moderate-high flatness gold and intergrown or overgrown gold particles with relatively low density. Gravity riffle, hydraulic riffle, and jigcentrifugal concentrator systems respectively save progressively more of these problematic gold morphotypes, but still lose significant and sometimes substantial amounts (of profit) to the tailings. Because of the differences in recovery efficiency, reverse circulation drilling probably underestimates the grade of most placers and may have resulted in bypassing several economic deposits. Losses to tailings by commercial recovery plants arise from inadequacies in fundamental plant design features. These inadequacies compromise plant efficiency by limiting the ability of plants to simulate the wide range of hydrodynamic conditions necessary to operate effectively throughout placer systems. Incorporation of sand pumps and multiple recovery methods into the more sophisticated plants only partly overcomes these inadequacies. At best, efficiency will be maximised in a few segments of the placer determined by individual plant design, and will decrease progressively upstream and downstream of those segments. Without prior knowledge of the morphological characteristics of the gold to be mined, it is difficult to choose the most appropriate plant design, or to estimate what proportion of the gold will be recoverable by any given plant. If the relevant relationships are not considered beforehand, the recovery plant is likely to lose a significant proportion of the gold, and sacrifice maximum profit.

GENERALTHE coal deposit, where it is being worked, consists of a bed of brown coal varying in thickness from 120 ft. to 200 ft., covered by an overburden of clay, drift, loam, etc., of a thickness of 22 ft. to 40 ft., and averaging 28 ft.The overburden is first entirely removed from the coal, and then the coal is excavated by. large revolving shovels which work at the bottom of the hole or open cut in the coal and deliver it in shovel bucketfuls to the transport system. The shovels owned by the Commission and available for this coal excavation are two Bucyrus steam revolving shovels, one being type 150B, weighing 150 tons, having a 21-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 47-ft. face; and the other being type 175B, weighing200 tons, having a 31-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 61-ft. face.In addition to these two steam shovels, the Commission has recently obtained a No. 250 Ruston electric revolving shovel weighing 340 tons, and having a bucket of 10 cub. yd. capacity, and capable of digging a 75-ft. face. When this electric shovel has been erected it will replace the steam shovels on the coal excavation, and the permanent transport system has been designed to take delivery of the coal from its bucket.The duty to be performed by the transport system is to take the coal from the shovels, elevate it out of the open cut, transport it to the screening house, deliver it iuto the hoppers at the top of this building, then to take the coal after it has passed over the screens and distribute the required grades to the power house and to the briquetting plant.

Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

This Institute, by nature of its charter, draws on various persons in the mining and metallurgical world of Australasia for its President from year to year, and consequently when the presidential address is given by one of these people the topic. which they generally select is a topic to which they are accustomed and on which they are able to speak with authority.As most of you know, my prime object in life has been concerned with steelmaking, so tonight you can steel yourself to the thought that you are going to be spoken to about steelmaking.Even if that were not the case, and were I not particularly interested in steelmaking, I think it would be appropriate to look at steelmaking in a broad sense on a basis of pure metallurgical interest, because the steel industry is going through as big a revolution today as it went through something over one hundred years ago when Bessemer made a theory become a fact.Bessemer, and as the Americans prefer to think Kelly, separately conceived the idea of blowing cold air through molten pig iron, and, contrary to the then general belief, this did not result in cooling of the metal but succeeded rather in heating it, and in burning out of the rather crude pig iron the impurities which prevented it from becoming a ductile metal.For many years before this, steel had been made in a very small painstaking way by what was known as the crucible process. The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

In tectonically disturbed zones within coal seams, decreases in the amount of kaolinite in the cellular structure of inertiniterich coal are accompanied by increasing kaolinite contents in fractures within the coal and/or rocks of immediately overlying horizons. This is due to fracturing of the inertinite microstructure by tectonic disturbance and remobilization and redistribution of free, fine-grained material (kaolinite and/or inertodetrinite.) Ascending waters are believed to transport the kaolinite in suspension, and redeposit it in the fractures and pores in the overlying horizons. This removal of material from the inertinite-rich coal leads to an increase in porosity (higher free gas storage), a presumed reduction in coal strength and an apparent increased proneness to instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas.
