With the depletion of high-quality ores, the efficiency of extracting difficult gold ores through flotation and leaching becomes very important in the mining industry. Iron contaminants, sulfide and carbonaceous coatings on the surface of gold and gold bearing minerals significantly hinder the recovery of gold during gold processing. As the surface of gold minerals is easily contaminated, coatings of iron oxides and iron hydroxides originated from the grinding process and oxidation of iron sulfides will cause a retarding effect on both gold flotation and leaching.To mitigate the processing issues caused by undesirable surface coatings on gold minerals, a new technology in treating surface coatings of iron contaminants has been developed. The pulp potential and pH of the slurry are altered to allow dissolution of surface coatings which are further excluded by the use of complexing reagents. The current work shows that iron contaminants can be removed from the surfaces of gold through Eh-pH adjustment and chelation which result in significantly improved gold flotation response. The addition of complexants aids the formation of iron chelates to prevent the iron species in the solution from forming iron oxide and iron hydroxide in the flotation conditions.CITATION:Wei, R and Peng, Y, 2014. During the 1950's there was a flurry of activity on the design of main ventilation shafts for mines. More recently, a new ana- lysis was commissioned in relation to the multi-shaft, nuclear waste isolation facili- ties currently under design in the United States. This paper presents the major find- ings of that study and should prove of value as a reference in the design of proposed new shafts. An overview of mine shaft resistance introduces the effects of the shaft walls, fittings, conveyances and shaft stations. Each of these is analyzed in turn. A com- pletely new technique is described, which facilitates the estimation of wall resis- tance. The effect of size of a conveyance is quantified and shown to be dominant when the cage occupies more than 30 per cent of the shaft cross-section. The dynamic effects of a moving conveyance are also analyzed.

From experience in the design and operation of power station combustion facilities in most mainland Australian States, involving a wide range of black coals and lignites, and in the specification and procurement of coal supplies for power station use, techniques for the optimisation of coal resource development and power generation utilisation have been developed to ensure compatibility between characteristics of the selected coals and power station design. These techniques include computer data bases for resource data handling and computer simulation of coal-fired boilers for determining coal property cost effects. Data Base Systems allow results of coal analyses to be efficiently handled, to assist in the review of the relevance of resource data to the coal sections proposed to be mined and the coal fractions proposed to be marketed. Data Base Systems also facilitate the marshalling of coal quality data into basic utilisation format to enable a proper utilisation review and analysis of the certainty and scatter of coal properties. Computer simulation of the effects of different coal properties on the capital and operating cost of power stations is achieved by establishing conceptual design parameters of the major items of plant to relate the variations in coal specification to equipment size and type. Variations in power station budget costs can then be determined using the computer model for variations in coal specification.

We often read and hear, especially in the United States, that we are running out of critical metals. These are vague forebodings of stagna- tion or winding down of our civilization. Our technological progress has been rapid in the last 50 years and is still advancing at an accelerated rate, and predictions of its long-term impact on consumption and production of metals are more hazardous than ever in the light of the great economic and political shifts that are bound to continue. There are many factors that will have a hardly predictable but profound effect on pro- duction and consumption of metals over a time span of, say, 25 years. Among such factors are recycling, substitution, availability of capital, direct involvement of governments in financing and production, and the capability of producing much lower grade ores at possibly much higher prices relative to costs in the event of scarcity. I must state at the outset that my discussion of this topic does not take into account the role that deep-sea nodules containing copper, nickel, cobalt, and manganese may play, because I don't believe production from these deposits will be of much significance within the 25 year span I will be discussing.

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. The literature relating to reduction of sulphides by carbon using lime as sulphur-absorbent is reviewed. A stage-wise thermodynamic model is employed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the direct reduction smelting of galena (PbS) concentrates with a carbon reductant in the presence of lime; a coke-rate of 65 kg/ton Pb is predicted by the model. The experimental data on the reduction of PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures under nitrogen were correlated by means of a finite difference numerical method and the values of the intrinsic rate constant I1 were derived. The results for the uncatalysed reduction are represented satisfactorily with log I1 = 1.247(±0.522) - 5540(±610)T-1.The catalysed PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures contained 2.5 wt% of ternary (K, Li, Na)2CO3 catalyst. For the catalysed reduction it was found that log I1 = 3.981 (±0.301) -7790(±353)T-1, where I1 (in both relations) is expressed in moles.(g.C.)-1.atm-1.s -I. The catalytic enhancement faclor was found to be quite large in the 1068 to 1262°K temperature range investigated here.

Three key areas of C.I.P. plant design, viz. leach- ing time, adsorption and the gold loading on the carbon, are discussed and illustrated with examples. The need for accurate pilot plant data for use in assessing and optimising design is emphasized. This approach should minimize capital and maximise return on capital. It is demonstrated that, as regards adsorption, economics favours short retention time, high gold loadings and mechanically agitated, draft tube reactors. INTRODUCTION Little attempt appears to have been made in Australia to design the present generation of C.I.P. plants to achieve an economic optimum. Most would, seem to have been based on pre- liminary leaching data, gold extraction and value and rule of thumb which, in general, has led to over design and over capitalisation. An essential step to effective economic design is a comprehensive pilot plant study to establish definitive operating parameters, yields and reagent costs. The present situation in the field of iron ore pelletizing is briefly described with particular view of the Lurgi/Dravo travelling grate process. To meet todays pellet quality requirements with regard to physical and metal- lurgical properties it is often necessary to add basic fluxing materials. It has been de- monstrated that for certain ores, basic addi- tives provide a considerable improvement in fired pellet quality. The production of self- fluxing pellets is becoming increasingly attractive. One Lurgi/Dravo plant is now in operation and another is under construction which were designed for the production of self- fluxing pellets. Self-fluxing pellets may be considered as the primary or exclusive blast furnace burden and the installation of a sinter plant is not necessary if the pellet plant-can handle all in-plant fines. Reference is made to the first pellet plant utilizing iron ore concentrate, in-plant fines and basic flux. The use of solid fuel for pellet indura- tion is discussed because of the increasing prices and possible shortages of heavy oil and natural gas. Since there is a strong tendency to increasing plant capacities, the design fea- tures of travelling grate pelletizing plants for productions up to 6 million tonnes are Discussed.

The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

The relative contents of Au in a series of groundwaters from water bores and exploration drillholes, located near Au mineralisation at Stawell, Ararat, Clunes and Ballarat in central Victoria, were found to be clear indicators of relative proximity to mineralisation in each region. In the same series, waters with anomalous concentrations of As distinguished Au mineralisation in bedrock from secondary palaeochannel or deep lead Au. In some groundwaters, acid pH values, high sulphate relative to other anions and detectable concentrations of reduced Fe reflected sulphide minerals associated with bedrock Au deposits. Close to some ore zones, locally anomalous groundwater concentrations of Mn reflected the Fe carbonates that accompany Au in these zones. In addition, elevated concentrations of other elements provided geochemical signatures for the aquifer lithologies associated with Au mineralisation. Of the lithological indicators Co and Ni, U and F, Rb and Cs, Mo and Li respectively reflected the mafic, felsic, potassic rich and quartz zones, principally in the Stawell mine area and to a lesser extent those at Clunes and Ballarat. Mineral stability diagrams, based on groundwater activities of K', Mgt and H`, demonstrated that a series of ore-zone groundwaters follow a trend that conforms with a biotite to sericite to kaolinite alteration sequence in aquifer mineralogy. This is a good illustration of how present day groundwaters under surface conditions can reflect the underlying mineral sequences that accompany these Au deposits. These observations around mine areas suggested that groundwater chemistry could provide a rapid and cost effective method of assessing prospectivity for An of extensive areas in central Victoria. To test this, regional sampling and analysis of 355 bore waters was carried out in a region where potential An bearing rocks are covered by Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments and volcanics. Contoured elemental abundances and distribution from this program indicated five zones in which groundwaters had elevated Au and despite the cover, appeared to reflect variations in the underlying Palaeozoic rocks. Three of the Au zones could be in terrain affected by extensions or intersections of faults, a feature in common with the established Au deposits in central Victoria. Reflections of concealed Palaeozoic rocks included a possible zone of concealed Cambrian greenstones that coincides with three of the Au zones. It was concluded that each of the An zones represents a groundwater Au focus that warrants follow-up exploration.

A survey of leaching systems for the dissolution of gold has been undertaken and their advantages and disadvantages evaluated both from their effectiveness at leaching and their compatibility with carbon- in-pulp (CIP) and resin-in-pulp recovery. In the near future it is almost certain that cyanidation in some form will remain the leaching system of.choice although economic and environmental pressures could see the introduction of other leaching systems particularly for treating refractory gold ores. The most likely alternative leaching systems appear to be acid chlorine, acid thiourea and ammoniacal thiosulphate. INTRODUCTION High grade reserves of readily recoverable gold ores are gradually being depleted which, inevitably, must create a greater awareness amongst gold producers, of the efficiency and, in some cases, the suitability of present day metallurgical processes for treating low grade, complex and refractory deposits. One of the key steps in the extraction of gold is the dissolution of the metal using chemical reagents which, ideally, should be cheap or recyclable, selective, non-toxic and compatible with down-stream recovery processes. In practice, meeting all these critera is difficult - if not impossible - particularly in view of the stringent environmental impact requirements which must be met Nowadays.

"Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation in the future. The importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing.This paper outlines the introduction of automated mining systems in large conventional mines as well as their growing role in block cave mines currently operating or being developed. The paper will then focus on a case study of how the communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation system within the overall mine operation.Mining operations already embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote and automated mining, but also provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments and requirements. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.The paper will explore how certain mining operations are addressing this by adopting a long-term strategy for automation deployment, which includes laying the necessary foundation architecture to meet their current requirements, while supporting their future visions for the fully automated mine.CITATION:Paine, R and Kent, D, 2014. Up until June 1988, Mount Thorley Coal Handling and Preparation Plant disposed of tailings by two methods. Approximately half of the plant tailings was mechanically dewatered by solid bowl centrifuges mixed with plant reject and was subsequently disposed in mine overburden spoils; the remainder was pumped to tailings ponds. Both future mine planning and environmental constraints could not allow for the long term construction of more tailings ponds so, following evaluation of available dewatering technology, belt press filters were selected for the treatment of tailings in excess of the capacity of the existing solid bowl centrifuges. Commission of the four 2.5 metre wide belt press filters soon showed that marked differences in performance were experienced when treating different coal seams. Further analysis showed that the coal tailings from different seams were quite different in terms of clay mineralogy, and these differences could be correlated with varying degrees of filter performance. Poor filter performance was experienced with coal tailings rich in sodium montmorillinite clays. A number of variables were investigated including in-line mechanical mixing of flocculant and feed slurry, cation exchange reagents such as gypsum, and upstream addition of cationic flocculant. In order to achieve satisfactory performance on the worst tailings, a combination of all of the above was required. In this paper, the reasons for selection of belt press filters and the program of investigations and testwork required to arrive at satisfactory belt press filter performance for the treatment of troublesome bentonitic rich tailings are discussed.

The Hilton Mine, 20 km north of Mount Isa was discovered in 1947. The underground mine has been a significant producer from 1989. The long development history is the result of complex orebody geometry, difficult metallurgy, dewatering problems and competition for development funds from the then expanding Isa Mine at Mount Isa. At present it produces 1.4 million tonnes annually. Its 21 million tonnes of reserves are necessary to supplement Isa Mine production.Hilton Mine is located in the Urquhart Shale formation of the Mount Isa Group, within the Mid Proterozoic Mount Isa Inlier. The seven developed orebodies have suffered strong structural deformation. Each orebody has a unique mixture of mineralogy and texture which effects ore value and metallurgical performance. These characteristics have proven useful for correlation purposes.The faulting and folding have caused difficulties with orebody interpretation, geomechanical complexities and has influenced the choice of mining methods: Initial cut and fill and open scope designs have given way to bench mining methods in response to better understanding of the eedloav and economic constraints.

Aberfoyle has been applying computer methods to mine geology in small to medium-sized underground mines since the early 1980's. Recently, the installation of DATAMINE software at the Hellyer Mine in Tasmania has allowed development of computerised applications which assist both mine geologists and mine planning engineers on a daily basis.Comprehensive data is entered into a database prior to survey coordinating to produce a processed database which can be accessed for construction of a variety of plots. The folded and faulted nature of the orebody contacts at Hellyer has necessitated the use of the structure contour method to provide a complete 3-D spatial interpretation. Computer-generated contact intersection points are hand-contoured before digitising and wireframing as a digital terrain model. This wireframe model can be sectioned in any plane for mine planning.

Site characterisation of subsurface contaminant transport is often hampered by a lack of knowledge of site heterogeneity and temporal variations in hydrogeochemistry. The use of a regional-scale data compilation derived from satellite imaging is discussed with respect to directing design of site characterisation to monitor the fate of a Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL) plume in Nevada. Evaluation of the drainage basin contributing to the groundwater flux into the study site was used to re-assess the site conceptual model and re-direct the characterisation effort. The use of highly resolved measurements of subsurface hydrogeochemistry in space and time were employed to identify the predominant biogeochemical processes controlling arsenic transport during discharge of groundwater into a pond at a site in Massachusetts. Direct-push conductivity measurements coupled with vertically-resolved sampling within the pond and adjoining aquifer demonstrated spatial and temporal variations in dissolved arsenic within groundwater and the pond water column and sediment pore water. Spatial variability was observed over the scale of centimetres to metres, and temporal variations were observed over the scales of days (following storm events) to seasons. Microbially-driven redox processes maintained anoxic conditions in groundwater and at the sediment-water interface (iron and sulfate reduction) and exerted both a direct and indirect influence on arsenic solution speciation and partitioning to surface water sediments.

Alluvial gold exploration is aimed at recognizing areas of anomalous gold content as evidenced by the nature of the drainage system, its age, geomorphic history and other features of the geological environment including the provenances. Subsequent studies to quantify the findings are governed by the need for accurate data based upon precise measurements. Computerization allows the use of more complicated mathematical procedures than are feasible manually, thus promoting the development of more advanced technological aids. Data banks provide the means of storing vast quantities of information for instant recall.Sample representivity is a major problem and a clear understanding of both sampling and analytical requirements is essential for dealing with problems arising from variations in sample size and particle size distribution. Field samples must always be large enough to ensure adequate representivity or the sampling has failed in its purpose.

Oxygen is required for the leaching of gold ores in cyanide solutions. The source of this oxygen demand and the effect of dissolved oxygen concentration on the rate of the process are briefly reviewed.A method of measuring the oxygen consumption rate is described and some experimental results reported.Fundamental aeration theory and rating of aerators is summarised to show how this type of experimental work provides the basis for full-scale design of aeration equipment.

It is sometimes necessary to resort to extremes in order to call attention to something that is pertinent to safety in mining. When some of the experts in occupational safety talk about this topic, they usually refer to a 'regulation' established by the Romans which stated that, due to the health hazards, usually death, no Romans but only slaves should work in mining. Since the time of the Roman Empire, a lot of ground has been covered in the field of mine safety. Nowadays, it can be said that occupational safety is being seriously addressed, with the result that the number of mining accidents has reduced dramatically, fatalities in this industry are less frequent, and the rate of accidents compared with other activities, such as construction or fanning, is low. This achievement has been possible initially through government legislation and by procedures established by the mining companies themselves. However, the dilemma for government is whether to regulate and if so, how much. It is pleasing to observe that most companies are establishing working procedures which conform with new government legislation, placing strong emphasis on the duty of care for mine employees. There will always be some regulatory aspects of legislation, and perhaps the best example of this is in the use of mine hoists where there are no international or Australian standards, and the regulations applied are of an empirical nature that err on the side of safety.
