A process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is under development at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The new procedure includes a two-stage fluid-bed treatment in which the pelletized concentrate with 33% Cu and 7% S is first desulfurized to about 0.5% S in an oxidizing atmosphere, and then metallized by reduction with hydrogen. The reduced product is melted with flux to separate metallic copper from the gangue. The metal must be refined to remove residual sulfur and iron. The pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment is an important feature of the process, because it permits shorter reaction time, decreases dusting, and facilitates subsequent processing.

OUTSTANDING FACTORS that have largely induced the current great interest in the reopening of old mines and the search for new deposits are the increased relative value of gold, the certainty of a market for it, and the decreased activity and poor profits in other lines of endeavor. It is easy to understand why a miner out of a job and unable to find any other means of livelihood would naturally take to the hills with his pan, pick, and shovel; but never before have inexperienced, would-be prospectors and placer miners materialized from the factories and farms, the haberdasheries, and the oil and gasoline supply stations, in such numbers as the last couple of years have witnessed, except when rich strikes of the proportions of a Klondike have been made. What, may one ask, has occasioned this condition? Unemployment has put these men in a receptive frame of mind, and newspaper and magazine articles have done the rest-- The Gold Miner of Los Angeles (a new weekly), The Mid- Week Pictorial (New York) for Sept. 3, 1932, and Popular Science Monthly for August, 1932, for instance. Even the Saturday Evening Post had an article on a promising part of Colorado. Stories that good wages may be had for the panning in nearly every western state have been featured by daily papers, popular "scientific" magazines, and quasi- technical journals. These tales have been eagerly grasped by thousands of people whose ignorance of mining has only served to increase their enthusiasm.

THIS paper is a brief description of the design and equipment of a new coal mine in southern Illinois, which has many features not common practice in shaft coal mining and which is laid out and equipped for such unusually large capacity that it promises soon to become one of the largest mining operations of its kind. Shaft sinking for the mine, New Orient, was commenced in May, 1921, by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In October, 1924, the plant was practically completed and was producing over 6000 tons of coal per day. There is good prospect that within a few years, when the mine is fully developed and manned, the output will attain a daily rate of 12,000 tons. The coal seam at New Orient lies approximately horizontal, about 500 ft. below the surface, and may be said to run from 9 to 12 ft. in thickness. The tendency in Franklin County has been toward large mining units (5000 to 6000 tons per day) with great care being given to protection against fire and explosion hazards, and usually with quite elaborate surface plants permitting careful preparation of the coal into graded sizes comparable with those made in the anthracite region. The field is unionized, with uniform conditions of wages for various classes of work, hours, etc., and the Illinois mining laws are quite specific with regard to fireproofing and safety measures. These conditions make it difficult for any but well-equipped and well-operated mines to meet the competition of the numerous fine properties of which this county can justly be proud. The coal company's property was already developed on the western side by the Orient. mine-a much visited and written about operation (with which many of you are possibly familiar through the Department of Mines' film "The Story of Coal ") which until recently held the 8-hr. production record with 8218 tons and usually ran quite consistently with production of slightly over 6000 tons per day. Experience at Orient was naturally one of the greatest influences in determining the location and character of the New Orient.

YOUR committee asks that I speak today on the relations of the engineering profession to public affairs. That takes in a lot of ground. This being a cheerful occasion, I will assume that I should exclude the engineer's function as a taxpayer. This being a nonpartisan occasion, I will assume that I should not refer to his voting emotions in 1940. Perhaps what was in the minds of your committee was the application of engineering thought to the confusions of the times. That is also a lot of ground. I fear, however, its boundaries disappear in mirages and rainbows on all sides. Now any entry of the engineer into public affairs involves his breaking into the fields of the sociologists, the economists, and the politicians. However I don't know why, seeing the difficulties these professions are having, they should not welcome a little help.

DURING 1950 the jet-piercing process was used commercially in the piercing of primary blast-holes in magnetic taconite at the preliminary taconite plant of .the Erie Mining Co., Aurora, Minn. The Erie Mining Co. purchased a jet-piercing machine and associated equipment in 1949, and the machine has been in operation since its installation in the summer of that year. An overall view of the pit with the JPM-1 jet-piercing machine in operation is shown in Fig. 1. During three months of 1949 and continuously since February 1950, production piercing took place under all pit conditions. By the end of October 1950, a total of 15,000 linear ft of hole had been pierced in an open pit handling an average of 1200 to 1800 tons of crude a day in one 8-hr shift. While it is recognized that this output does not approach the millions of tons a year planned for the developing Minnesota taconite projects, the machine as a unit has been operating under conditions probably more adverse than those that eventually will be encountered in the large operations. This pilot operation has permitted evaluation of the piercing problem in the full-scale taconite plant. This paper describes jet-piercing process funda- mentals, important features of the latest jet-piercing burners and machine, actual piercing results obtained, and new developments that give promise of materially increasing overall process efficiency. To produce the blasthole, jet-piercing utilizes thermal energy, as contrasted with the application of mechanical energy in churn drills and jackham-mers. The heart of the process may be termed a tailored flame produced by a rocket-type burner, thermodynamically similar in every respect to that of the giant rockets being developed for military purposes. The heat release in the combustion chamber of the burner is about 50x10' Btu per cu ft per hr as compared with 5x10' for most modern steam generators.* Combustion of liquid petroleum fuels (kerosine, diesel oil, or No. 2 fuel oil) with gaseous oxygen in the burner chamber at pressures of 100 to 200 psi results in temperatures of about 4300°F. Expansion of the hot combustion gases through divergent nozzles produces high-temperature supersonic jets having measured velocities of about 6000 fps. Impinging the flame jets on rock causes a thin surface layer to expand and break away from the base as a result of the thermally induced stresses. This spalling action is aided further in chert and quartzite by the 0.82 pct volume change resulting from the 6 to p quartz inversion at 1066"F.t The dynamic action of the jets whisks the spalled rock

Safety in coal mines depends largely upon adequate training of the foreman. Although management must provide modern and safe equipment and at all times keep mines in first class condition from a safety viewpoint, final results will be determined by the quality of supervision. HANNA COAL CO., Division of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., operates three large underground mines in eastern Ohio. The section of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal seam in which these mines are located varies in thickness from 52 to 64 in. It is immediately overlain by a stratum of shaly material 12 to 15 in. thick locally known as draw slate, which is structurally very weak and which disintegrates rapidly upon exposure to atmosphere. Immediately above the draw slate as it is normally found is a band of extremely high ash material 6 to 12 in. thick known as roof coal or rooster coal, and above this is a stratum of conglomerate material varying from 4 to 10 ft in depth. Overlying the conglomerate is a relatively thick stratum of limestone, the first stable material above the Pittsburgh coal seam in eastern Ohio. With the method of full-seam mining that has been adopted, draw slate is shot down, loaded with the coal, and removed in the preparation plants. The roof coal then becomes the permanent roof. The major problem in mining the No. 8 seam in eastern Ohio is control of the roof. Since the strata above the draw slate contains no material with a structure firm enough to provide self-support, the roof begins to sag in a relatively short time after the coal and draw slate have been removed. The problem thus becomes one of getting temporary safety posts under this roof as quickly as possible to prevent a break or separation from occurring either in the roof coal or in the conglomerate above it. Haulage System The Pittsburgh No. 8 seam in eastern Ohio is relatively level, with only minor local dips. Throughout the Hanna Coal Co. mines, entries are generally 12 ft wide. Rooms are driven on a 60" angle on 30-ft centers and are 22 ft wide. No attempt is made to extract the 8-ft pillars between. The entire length of main line haulage is gunited in one mine, and a major portion in another. Two of the mines have single-track main haulage roads with passways. The third, a new mine, is double-tracked, and the roof is supported by steel crossbars, 60 lb or heavier, spaced on 4-ft centers and lagged. In recent years timbering on main line and secondary haulage roads has been accomplished by one of two methods: 1—crossbars are supported on a small section of post set in a hitch hole in the rib, or 2—or a hole is drilled in the rib about 12 in. below the roof, of sufficient depth to fasten securely a short length of 40-lb rail, the bottom of the rail facing the roof, on which a short post is set directly under the crossbar. At present the hitch-hole timbering method is favored. At two of the mines the main line haulage locomotives are 26-ton, 8-wheel units. These locomotives are of the axleless type, each wheel being individually mounted on the frame. The motorman's compartment is encircled by 3-in. armor plate for the protection of the occupants. At the third underground mine conventional 15-ton locomotives are being used. However, these locomotives have been completely rebuilt in the company's shops. Equipment has been streamlined and quarters have been provided for two people, who are protected by heavy steel plate in much the same way described above. This modernization program has been completed on all secondary haulage locomotives at the three mines, and the company is well on the way to similar equipment of the 6-ton section locomotives. The following additional features have been included in their modernization: 1—additional support for the motors to prevent their falling to the middle of the track and derailing the locomotives should a break occur in the suspension bar support; 2—installation of additional bracing to prevent brake rigging from becoming displaced and causing derailments; 3—enclosure of all electric wiring in conduit or raceway; 4—provision of an enclosed compartment for the storage of re-railers, jacks, and other equipment, so that they need not be carried on the outside of the motor; and 5—redesign of the end of the locomotive opposite the operator's compartment to prevent anyone's mounting from that direction. In 1961, a research program started at Columbia into the mechanical aspects of flotation,* and certain ends are now in view. The purpose of this note is to explain these tentative conclusions in the hope of stimulating discussion and eliciting new data, especially industrial data, with which to test the views expressed. The variables presently under consideration are impeller rotational speed, N, volumetric air rate, Q, and impeller diameter, D, the latter being the parameter chosen to designate cell size. THE GRADE AND RECOVERY SURFACES With a given ore, chemical treatment, and flotation machine, both grade, G, and recovery, R, are functions of N and Q. The GNQ and RNQ relationships are best viewed in terms of three-dimensional surfaces (Fig. 1) which are experimentally determinate.2 TO maintain grade at an acceptably high level, it is necessary for N and Q to lie within certain limits, and similarly with recovery. The nature of fracture in unnotched tensile and notched tensile sheet and round specimens and V -notched and precracked Charpy-type sheet specimens of both wrought stress -relieved and re-crystallized molybdenum was investigated over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C. The sharp rise in fracture stress, for unnotched tensile samples, as the temperature is increased above the brittleness transition temperature (Tb), is found to be a result of an increase in flow stress due to plastic constraint and an increased strain rate which results from the onset of necking at Tb . Quasi-brittle fracture in notched tensile samples is found to occur when the tensile stress at the elastic-plastic interface, beneath the root of the notch, reaches a maximum critical value, which is independent of test temperature over the range from —78° to 25°C, but dependent on microstructure. In the temperature range between 150° and 300°C, unnotched tensile and notched tensile samples alike are found to fracture by a ductile fibrous tearing process which is discontinuous in nature, as a result of the competition between the processes of tearing, through continued plastic flow, and local work hardening. Results from the V-notched and fatigue-cracked Charpy-type impact tests demonstrate that crack initiation is the governing factor in the low-temperature (-78° to 25°C) fracture process for molybdenum. In recent years, there has been considerable interest, and a commensurate number of investigations, concerning the duc tile-to-brittle transition in refractory metals. There has not developed, however, a satisfactory explanation for the uniaxial tensile fracture-stress transition which accompanies the well-known ductility transition. This matter therefore warranted investigation. In a similar manner, the increased importance of notched tensile strength values in evaluating materials and in design criteria requires a better understanding of the factors which control the fracture behavior of notched tensile samples. In a previous investigation1 of the nature of initial yielding and fracture in notched sheet molybdenum at room temperature, it was suggested that plastic constraint was the controlling factor in governing the fracture behavior of notched samples. The final portion of this investigation was concerned with the fracture toughness of molybdenum. Of particular interest was the comparison of effective surface energies for fracture in V-notched samples with fatigue-cracked, Charpy-type samples in order to ascertain the relative importance of the initiation and propagation phases of the fracture process. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Sheet tensile, notched tensile, and V-notched Charpy specimens were prepared from 50-mil, stress-relieved molybdenum sheet.* Half of these specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1200°C and 7.5 x l0-5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a relatively uniform grain size of 0.30 mm diameter. Round notched and unnotched tensile specimens were prepared from warm-rolled and swaged 5/8-in.-diam bar.* These specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1350°C and 5 x lom5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Material analyses in ppm were: C N O H Sheet 290 10 4 1 Bar 50 30 30 2 The unnotched tensile sheet specimens had a 1/4-in. gage width and a 1-in. gage length. The unnotched tensile round specimens had a 9/32-in. gage diameter and a 1-1/4-in. gage length. The sheet and round notch tensile specimens are shown in Fig. 1. All of the notched tensile specimens tested were tandem-notched in order to study the location and mode of fracture initiation. The tandem-notched specimens were carefully machined so that the largest variation in notch depth on a single specimen was 0.001 in. Thus, when fracture occurs, the extent of plastic deformation that exists in the un-fractured notch section is that which exists just prior to fracture. All of the tandem-notched sheet specimens were electrolytic ally polished and chemically etched prior to testing. The V-notched Charpy-type specimens machined from the 50-mil sheet material had the standard dimensions of 2.125 in. long, 0.394 in. deep, and a 0.010-in. root radius. The unnotched tensile and notched tensile tests were conducted over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C, in a 10,000-lb Instron Universal Testing Machine, at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. The mining and other industries have grown and changed with- respect to their requirements for slurry pumps capable of handling high percentages of abrasive materials. Greater solids concentration, higher heads and pressures, and increased flow arc not possible. Today's equipment delivers up to three times the flow-tonnage and 1.3 times the head per stage as compared with pumps of ten years ago. This results in four times the requirement in size and energy. The new centrifugal pumps are capable of handling these requirements at pressures up to 4826 kPa (700 psi), with 6895 kPa (1000 psi) or more being considered for future systems. The latest pumps, functioning at four times the operating requirement on flow-head, weight eight times more than the previous equipment. Efficiency is increased slightly, to about 75 % to 85%. A testing program on equivalent units has confirmed that the added strength and specific design of heavy-duty pumps can meet demanding engineering objectives. Operating life on difficult-to-pump materials is increased from 500 to over 5000 hours of continuous operation; the ten-fold increase in pump operating time is a major design objective.

Official daily output of the Reconcavo (Bahia) oil fields, which amounted to 300 bbl., increased by the end of 1944 to 500 bbl. The new productive wells are in the district of Candeias. This figure is expected to further increase during 1945. The Itatig Company, which had drilled five wildcats in the state of Sergipe, stopped in 1944, but intends to resume work during the current year, or as soon as the war is over, in order to try the Cretaceous areas around its salt deposits. Several concessions applied for in the states of Sao Paulo, Parana arid Santa Catarina were favorably considered by the Conselho Nacional de Yetroleo, which is interested in fostering prospecting activities in the country. Several national groups are interested in exploring the federal gas field of Aratu (Bahia), a proposal having been made to use the gas in the manufacture of Portland cement. Undoubtedly the most important fact in the 1944 activities was the visit by two outstanding petroleum geologists, who had the opportunity to examine some of the principal areas and reported their opinions to the Brazilian Government. By special courtesy of the U. S. Government, Mr. E. DeGolyer spent a few weeks inspecting the gas and oil fields of the so-called "Reconcavo" of Bahia (a large tract surrounding All Saints Bay, on whose shore lies the city of Salvador) Later he exchanged ideas with Colonel Joao Carlos Barreto, President of the Conselho Nacional de Petrolco, as to the most adequate measures to develop production. Considering the oil problem in the southern part of Brazil, in the sedimentary belt including formations from the Devonian to the Triajsic, Mr. DeGolyer suggested a visit there by Mr. Lemis MacNaughton. The latter traveled during the months of June, July and August, accompanied by Brazilian geologists Avelino de Oliveira, Vice-president of the Conselho Nacionial de Pctroleo, Pedro Moura, Annibal Bastos, Burdot Dutra and J. Felicissimo, and verified the actual possibilities of the region, thus confirming the opinion of Pedro Moura, Avelino de Oliveira and Froes Abreu as to the advisability of thoroughly prospecting the south of Brazil. It is to be hoped that on the recommendation of these proficient American experts the Brazilian Government will take the necessary measurcs to carry out a complete search 01 such areas, which hitherto have been unsuccessfully drilled because knowledge of the structure was not adequate. The old Government policy of monopolistic essence has now given way to the more enlightened tendency of reconciling official action with private enterprise, which should in no way be curbed but rather encouraged. Such trend is heartily welcomed by financiers and technicians alike, who realize how indispensable is the cooperation of private capital, both national and foreign, in

S ULFURIC acid made in the United States during the last four years has averaged approximately 7,000,000 tons of 50" B6 acid a year. This is double the production of the year 1913. About 66 per cent of the acid is made from sulfur, 16 per cent from pyrite, 13 per cent at copper, lead, and zinc smelters, and the remainder from miscellaneous sources it her the chamber process or the contact process, (at some plants both) is used. In 1923, the contact process accounted for nearly 30 per cent of all the sulfuric acid made in this country and since then it has been increasingly employed. It was first introduced here in 1898, and has always .proved less expensive than the chamber process for the manufacture of .acid of high concentration and purity, but the latter produces acid of low strength suitable for many industries.

If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 4th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 3rd edition (1960) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstrate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Re- view. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 3rd edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these, of course, are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 11th annual meeting in 1975, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geo- logical and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications. (New Publications of the Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. 20242) and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, U.S. Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213). The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, and 1970. Three other major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, and Mineral Trade Notes. The latter is particularly good for news of foreign developments. A new Professional Paper No. 820 of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1973, summarizes data on the mineral resources of the entire country. Bellows Connector Fabricated of chemically inert Teflon, the new bellows type connector has many pipe line applications where vibration, expansion and electrolysis exist in the handling of corrosive liquids or gases and solvents. The new connector is electrically non-conductive, flexible even at 94°F and as strong as 480°F as at 70°F, according to the manufacturer. This bellows connector serves as a [ ] vibration dampener as well as an expansion joint and connects misaligned couplings and insulates flanges electrically. End flanges of the joint are French-type envelope gaskets made integral with the joint for easy assembly between companion flanges and a tight, leak-proof seal on installation. Circle No. 1

Shovel To further increase the efficiency in the production of their foundry sand, the American Silica Sand Co. has purchased a new and improved shovel that will be used for loading trucks at their Reynolds Pit. The [ ] new shovel will greatly facilitate winter mining operations and make possible larger winter shipments of the company's foundry sand. The Reynolds Pit is one of three sand pits in the Ottawa district owned by American Silica which produce sand that is refined for foundry use. Circle No. 1 Electric Switches The Crane Electric Co. has just announced the production of their R-1000, a new rotating limit switch designed to control the travel of any rotating device requiring interruption or establishment of electrical current after a predetermined number of revolutions. It is useful for machinery, lifts, and other power equipment. The switch is presented in a finished case, 16 gage, reinforced, with walls of sufficient strength to hold the entire mechanism and all the parts in accurate alignment. The worm gear combination has a 60 to 1 ratio, sufficient for most industrial uses. The number of revolutions can still be increased by using various combinations of driving sprockets, either on the shaft of the switch, or on the sprocket of the unit controlled by the switch itself. James W. Malcolmson died suddenly on Dec. 26, 1917, at Kansas City, Mo., where he had made his home for the past ten years. He was born at Dover, Kent, England, on Oct. 6, 1866. He graduated from the Royal School of Science, London, England, in 1889, and almost immediately after graduation came to Mexico, accepting a position with the Michoacan Railway and Mining Co., as mining and mechanical engineer. His work in the mining profession was carried on principally in Msxiac and the United States. • In 1888, he married Katherine Haden Krause, of Woolwich, Kent, England, and leaves, besides his wife, five sons and one daughter. During Mr. Malcolmson's long and successful career as a mining engineer, he was connected with the following companies: from 1889 to 1893, with the Michoacan Railway and Mining Co., as mining and mechanical engineer; from 1893 to 1898, in various capacities with the Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co.; after the consolidation of the Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co. with the American Smelting & Refining Co., he remained as manager of the mining department in Mexico of the American Smelting & Refining Co. until 1902. In 1902, he located in El Paso, and took up the practice of his profession as a consulting engineer. While there, he was consulting engineer for the famous and rich Pedrazzini mines at Chispas, in the State of Sonora. He was instrumental in organizing the La Republics mine in Chihuahua, and for a time acted as consulting engineer for the property. He remained in El Paso until 1907 and then moved to Kansas City and became associated with the United States & Mexican Trust Co., as consulting engineer. In 1909, he became connected with The Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co., as its consulting engineer, and continued in this connection and in the general practice of his profession as consulting engineer until his death.. His general policy in connection with the Lucky Tiger company was always a progressive one and the success of the enterprise can be largely attributed to him and his good judgment. Mr. Malcolmson contributed several articles to the Institute at different times, one of them being on the ore deposits of the Sierra Mojada Mining District, in 1901. Much of his work was in Mexico, and during his long residence in that country he acquired a very thorough knowledge of the Mexican people and their customs. During the revolution, from 1910 to 1916, this knowledge was of great value in connection with his work for the Lucky Tiger company, and often assisted greatly in keeping the property going. Mr. Malcolmson was one of the very widely known men in his profession; he was everywhere held in the very highest regard, and his position among men in the mining profession was an enviable and honorable one. At the time of his death, besides being consulting engineer for the Lucky Tiger company, he was interested in mines in the Miami zinc fields and was acting as consulting engineer for two of the operating properties there. He invested to quite an extent in real estate when he moved to Kansas City in 1907 and his investments in this line proved successful.
