Mina Santa Rosa, in west central Panama, is the first large-scale gold mine in Panama and will soon be the largest single-mine gold producer in central America (Fig. 1). At full production, the mine will process 1.8 Mt/a (2 million stpy) of ore and produce more than 1.8 t/a (60,000 oz/year) of gold and 9.3 t/a(300,000 oz/year) of silver. Mina Santa Rosa is a subsidiary of Greenstone Resources of Toronto, Ontario. Freeport-McMoRan geologists first visited the area in 1985. Their rock chip sampling adjacent to old shafts and adits confirmed widespread gold and trace element geochemistry anomalies. Surface mineralization appeared to be localized in and adjacent to narrow veinlets. However, they recognized astructural setting similar to the Nevada Tertiary volcanic-hosted epithermal gold systems.

Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

American mining companies operate many drum hoists that hoist from various depths with varying payloads. This paper will review the procedure of selecting optimum wire rope constructions for these existing hoisting installations. Selection for proposed installations along with recommended hoisting parameters will also be presented. To achieve this optimum rope performance, preventative and corrective maintenance procedures will be reviewed along with examples of rope problems and their causes.

Illinois No. 6 coals of IBC 101 and IBC 112 were treated in solution with sodium hypochlorite to remove their sulfur contents, especially organic sulfur. The lab experiments were conducted in two steps of leaching at room temperature and hydrolysis at 90oC. The removal of organic sulfur from IBC 101 was by 37.8% while that from IBC 112 was only 13.7% under their respective optimum conditions. This large difference in organic sulfur removal is considered to be due to difference in concentration of surface total acid group, 3.14 vs. 0.88 mmol/g of coal.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations (New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division, 2015a). Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. In the minerals industry today, the ?low hanging fruit? that once existed to debottleneck production and improve recovery, while meeting market needs for quality in mineral processing operations, are more and more difficult to find. Systematic methods for establishing plant mass flow, recovery, operational efficiency and control strategy in context with customer specifications provides the necessary insight and confidence for plant operators to prioritize improvement projects in order to maximize return on investment (ROI) for the site. The evaluation of aggregate and industrial mineral processing plants requires the following steps when projecting cost saving opportunities: collecting background data, conducting a base-line evaluation, analyzing specific unit-operation performance, defining investment options, prioritizing the selected improvement opportunities and the implementing process changes. The following paper describes the approach and challenges of developing an improvement plan for a dry and wet mineral processing operation.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes.Water is routed to the roof bolter fromthe main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/ m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box, the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3, a 60% reduction in respirable dust concentration. The quartz content of the roofmaterialwas high, ranging from 28.9 to 52.7%during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60% when cleaning the collector boxes.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

AMAX Coal Company's Belle Ayr coal dryer is the first industry attempt to commercialize sub-bituminous coal drying which has been the subject of laboratory and pilot plant tests for almost two decades. This paper presents the historical background, construction, start-up and operation of this adaption of fluidized bed coal drying technology to Powder River Basin coal. The flowsheet and operational problems encountered during plant start-up are discussed together with general material balance and product quality.

Slurry reactors are being used extensively throughout the chemical, biochemical and mineral processing industries. This paper describes the interaction between fine ore particles and granular porous adsorbents such as activated carbon and ion-exchange resins in a stirred tank reactor. Gold and silver cyanides were used as adsorbates to detect changes in the mass transfer characteristics of the adsorbents, which were ashed to determine the loading of ore particles. A simple kinetic model incorporating film diffusion, intrapanicle diffusion ~d the adsorption equilibrium, was used to interpret kinetic data and to estimate the effect of slurry conditions on the diffusion parameters. It was observed that the equilibrium loading of fines in the adsorbents was independent of their concentration in the slurry. Furthermore, the presence of these panicles inside an adsorbent decreases the effective diffusion of gold or silver cyanides into the adsorbent matrix. When fine suspended solids are present in the reactor, a decrease in the effective availability of the superficial surface of the pre-saturated adsorbent panicles for mass transfer from the liquid phase was observed. This newly defined surface availability factor was dependent on the concentration, panicle size, and the zeta potential of the fine particles in suspension.

This paper presents an innovative ground support solution developed to construct a tunnel cross-passage for the MUNI Metro Turnback (MMT) Project. A “soft center” jet grouting approach was designed to provide solid ground support while maintaining a soft center to allow for hand-mining of a 2.44 m (8 ft.) wide, 3.66 m (12 ft.) tall and 4.6 m (15 ft.) long cross-passage through soft Bay Mud. Prohibitive costs and schedule impacts associated with mining under compressed air (at the time being used for main tunnel construction) were the catalysts to search for alternative methods for cross-passage construction. Limited surface disruption, relatively low costs, ease of subsequent excavation, nominal schedule impacts and proven local success of jet grouting were key factors in selecting and designing this method of ground support.

ABSTRACT It has been suggested that effective disaster prevention and response in mining requires that elements of emergency management be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making, much in the same way that the industry approaches routine risk management. Since Congress passed the MINER Act in 2006, the newly mandated structural and technological advancements in mine emergency response preparation have been made and are apparent, but measureable improvement in mineworker emergency preparedness is difficult to ascertain. To begin exploring whether measurable indicators of mine workforce preparedness can or should be addressed within a risk management framework, NIOSH researchers examined the datasets from two separate research efforts—one which measured the organizational safety climate and self-reported safety performance, and the other which measured individuals’ perceptions of their own self-escape competency. INTRODUCTION In response to the mine disasters in 2006, the United States Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act), which strengthened existing regulations [30 CFR, Part 48] and introduced new provisions to improve mine emergency response. Since that time, new technological and structural features, such as mandated redundant communication systems, personnel tracking systems, and lifelines in primary and secondary escapeways, have been installed in underground coal mines across the country. Additionally, mine operators are required to develop emergency response plans, provide adequate supplies of breathable air throughout the mine, provide more frequent and realistic expectations training, and are required to immediately notify the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the event of an accident. While the structural and technological advancements in emergency preparedness are readily observable and easily measured, levels of individual mineworker preparedness remain difficult to assess. There is a general consensus that deficiencies in competence in the non-routine tasks required for individual miners to effectively respond to a mine emergency likely remain (e.g., National Research Council [NRC], 2013), and NIOSH research continues address this concern (Haas, et al., 2015; Hoebbel et al., 2018). To maximize an operation’s capacity to effectively prevent disasters and/or respond to emergency events, it has been suggested that individual and emergency management efforts be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making in much the same way organizations manage routine risks to health and safety (Haddow et al., 2017). To the authors’ knowledge, the mindful intersection of routine risk management policies and practices and emergency prevention and response readiness have yet to be empirically studied within the mining industry.

"The profile of the respondents was that of a professional responsible for communications, community relations or corporate social responsibility programs. By targeting a consistent professional profile it was possible to ensure that most respondents had a similar degree of responsibility and/or decision-making ability related to the application of communication technologies. The research attempted to be inclusive and attention was paid to interview respondents from both genders and from indigenous groups.4, 5 A codebook of 80 themes was developed that highlighted recurring topics; for example, codes were created to identify risks, benefits, policies and learning process of using social media and included topics that were repeatedly emphasized by respondents (i.e. age, efficiency and language). Both manifest coding (i.e. coding of the visible content, such as specific words) and latent coding (i.e. coding of underlying meanings) was undertaken (Creswell [13]). The codes were used in the qualitative analysis using ATLAS.ti software and network views were created to illustrate the relationship between major themes of this research. There are limitations to this research, largely related to the changing nature of the Internet and communication technologies. There is also a geographic limitation to the application of this research because most of the data was gathered primarily from Canadian sources.6 Different levels of Internet penetration, or limited access to computers or mobile devices, and low literacy rates may reduce the applicability of the research in countries with low Internet penetration. A more systematic process to selecting candidates may have helped bring balance to the final list of interview respondents. For example, most of the corporate respondents were from medium and large companies and there was not adequate representation of small mineral exploration companies. The research did not probe into social media applications by different business groups within the mining sector, such as smelting and processing."

A symposium on the characterization and toxicology of mineral dusts was held Sept. 19 and20 in Washington, D.C. The symposium was held to update the minerals industry, the health community, government agencies and academia on the technical, health and regulatory aspects of minerals to be evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).In October 1996, the IARC met in Lyon, France, to discuss and prepare “Volume 68 of the IARC Mono-graphs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans on Silica, Silicates, Dusts and Organic Fibers.”

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

The Michigan Department of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method Is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a relative aid In assessing rock strength is reported.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and six EPRI-member utilities are sponsoring research to define relationships between coal properties and coal handling behavior. Deratings and outages caused by plugged chutes or bunkers or frozen coal can cost utilities millions of dollars annually in lost energy production as well as in manpower to restore coal flow. There is also the added expense of maintaining redundant equipment to assure a continuous coal feed to the boiler, a common practice for utilities. Over the past two years, researchers at CQ Inc. and Iowa state university have collected and analyzed coal samples to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals for their power plants. These coal samples cover ranges in ash content, rank, grindability, size distribution, and moisture content--properties that affect the handling behavior of coals. Other properties, such as the washability and ash composition, are measured as well. Over the remaining two years of the project, all of these analyses will be correlated to handling behavior, measured using a triaxial shear tester that determines the strength of a coal under compression. An index will be developed and validated at host utility power plants.

For public organizations, preparing accurate project cost estimates is a critical component in capital project planning. Project delivery methods provide a structured approach to moving projects through the design and construction lifecycle, and typically use cost estimates as key inputs at each stage to determine if the project will advance. As design stages can occur years or even decades before construction contracts are awarded, estimates need to make reasonable assumptions about how the work may be executed (means and methods) as well as potential future market trends so that appropriate values for material pricing, labour costs, escalation, and owner’s costs can be included. This process is challenging enough during stable markets, as historic trends can often be misleading and require a suitable understanding of economic factors to use appropriately. When you mix in the market volatility that has been observed since 2020, developing accurate project cost estimates becomes even more challenging. In cases such as this, having a structured approach to cost estimating that includes an adequate risk-based reserves cannot be overstated as it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. This paper explores some of the historic and more recent market trends that have impacted key aspects of project cost estimates for capital project planning. It also provides recommendations on how to develop cost estimates for infrastructure projects, with examples from Metro Vancouver, which plans for and delivers regional-scale services to 2.6 million residents. A brief commentary on the use of escalation clauses in contracts is also presented.

Weak rock is an important consideration in tunnel design and construction due to the difficult ground conditions that are often encountered. Nevertheless, when conditions are favorable high advance rates can be achieved leading to economical tunnel construction. Successful construction of a tunnel in weak rocks depends on correctly anticipating the behavior of these unique materials. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines that can be used to accurately classify the performance of weak rock in tunnels.
