A multiple coal fired boiler house provides steam for utility usage in various production plants. Maintaining stable header pressure and boiler availability is of critical importance for downstream consumers. Advanced Process Control comprising of a G2 based expert system and Model Predictive Control was implemented to improve the boiler house performance. The results yielded improvements in the main header pressure stability, reduction in boiler saturation and significant saving in coal consumption. The design and development of selective flotation collectors has been the key to the remarkable success of flotation in beneficiating complex, difficult-to-process ores. Sustained research efforts in the field over the past hundred years have led to delineating the scientific basis of selective mineral flotation in terms of the crystal chemistry and the surface and colloid chemistry of minerals including their solubility, and the aqueous solution chemistry of added reagents. It is now well-established that the electrical double layer theory (EDL) is the most powerful means of quantifying the relative strength of mineral-reagent interactions in the case of nonsulfide minerals. We illustrate the utility and the power of the EDL in delineating the science underlying selective mineral flotation with the help of a few examples taken from our own work, in particular on the selective flotation of rare-earth minerals (bastnaesite) from associated semisoluble minerals (barite and calcite) using alkyl hydroxamate collectors and the flotation separation of lithium-containing minerals (spodumene) from associated alumino-silicate minerals with oleate (fatty acids). Both of these mineral separation systems are of contemporary research interest and of immense value to the industry today. Recent advances in utilizing molecular modeling computations, particularly in the context of quantifying the effect of crystal chemistry and the relative distribution of adsorption sites available on mineral cleavage planes, are also reviewed.

The environmental and health implications of artisanal gold mining activities at mining sites across Nigeria have rekindled research interest. This study aimed to assess the scalability of naturally occurring radioactive materials in gold mining sites in Iperindo, Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from three different mining sites and control locations and analyzed for natural radionuclides, mainly 238U, 232Th, and 40K, using gamma spectrometry having a sodium iodide detector. The average activity concentration values of 61.55 ± 3.71, 72.65 ± 4.45, and 1134.99 ± 38.12 Bqkg− 1 obtained from within the mining sites for 238U, 232Th, and 40K, respectively, were above the world permissible values of 33.0 Bqkg− 1 for 238U, 45.0 Bqkg− 1 for 232Th, and 420.0 Bqkg− 1 for 40K. The average activity concentration values of 15.26 ± 3.19, 21.46 ± 4.27, 381.04 ± 23.36 Bqkg− 1 estimated for 238U, 232Th, and 40K, respectively, for the control location were, however, lower than the global permissible values. The study also evaluated other radiological parameters such as radium equivalent, dose rate, annual effective dose rate, internal and external hazard indices, and alpha and gamma indices. The obtained values were 252.83 Bqkg− 1, 119.98 nGyh− 1, 147.15 mSvy− 1, 0.85 Bqkg− 1, 0.68 Bqkg− 1, 0.31 Bqkg− 1, and 1.89 Bqkg− 1 respectively. Except for radium equivalent, external and internal hazard risks, and alpha index, which were significantly lower than the recommended threshold, all other radiological parameters were higher than the recommended global limits. Moderate data reproducibility and a p-value of 0.000574 further reinforced the robustness and reliability of the results obtained in this study.

The Minera Yanacocha operation consists of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants and presents various operating challenges. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters and inventory issues. An integral component of the process water/mass balance is a model of each heap that describes heap behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. The heap models are linked to a mass balancing program in order to track flows and concentrations throughout the circuit. A case study of the process heap model is presented for the La Quinua heap, including results for the normal base line operation and several operational problems such as loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased flow to a section of the heap (i.e., pond volume control), effect of significant rain events, and impact of a change in material properties (i.e., change in ore type). The impact on heap operating efficiency is discussed with regard to effects on recovery and gold solution grades.

"THE SUPER CYCLE IS GONE The utopia of the rising sales volume, for mining companies from 2002-2011, was entirely due to rising production volume and prices. The Australian mining sector experienced an 18 percent annual growth rate in revenues, and 11 percent growth in prices. (1) However, EBIT remained flat during the same time period. In addition, Australian mines saw a 7 percent annual decline in both labor and capital productivity. (2) Mines in the U.S. and Canada produced similar results, whereas the world-wide mining industry has seen a productivity drop of 40% since 2001. (3) The decade “Bull Run” of rising prices was trashed by companies that chased low-quality assets while increasing debt on their balance sheet. It seemed everyone believed the “super cycle” would last forever, while completely ignoring the history of cycle downturns. Worldwide mining operations are as much as 28 percent less productive today than a decade ago, according to new McKinsey research. The results from McKinsey’s new MineLens Productivity Index (MPI), which adjusts for declining ore grades and mine cost inflation, show that the pronounced decline in productivity is evident across different commodities and is seen in most mining players and geographies. (4) McKinsey sees three important areas of focus to address the root causes of productivity decline. 1) Embed effective management operating systems at mines 2) Prioritized operational excellence and capabilities development 3) Focus on innovation Reality has now settled back in and companies are struggling to make ends meet. The basic management staple of controlling costs and improving the production/productivity that was lost in the excitement is now back in play. Traditional cost-cutting approaches, such as across-the-board spending cuts, layoffs, and hiring freezes are only short-term initiatives and will not permanently improve a company’s cost structure or improve long- term competitiveness. This can only be accomplished by engaging front-line employees and empowering them to make necessary improvements in their daily work. It is time for leaders to lead and develop cultures of continuous improvement within their organizations in order to sustain their mining project to the end of mine life. Successful operating managers require two different skill sets of Leadership and Management; knowing how to lead people in their organization and how to manage the work they do."

This is illustrated by a deep dive into the evolving case study of Kennecott’s Bingham Canyon Open Pit Mine Technical team. Here, a multi-faceted approach to cultural change is helping to unlock the team’s contribution to the life extension of an aging asset. Guided by a vision and strategic roadmap, this approach is part way through a 5-year implementation period and is yielding encouraging business outcomes.

Sublevel open stoping is a low-cost method that has been successfully employed in many large underground mining operations. Where ore body characteristics are suitable, extensive mechanization and the use of large-scale stoping techniques can considerably reduce operating costs. However, careful long-term planning of mine layouts and large capital commitments in development are required prior to production. Implementing precise mine design procedures and carefully controlling operations can result in considerable benefits. This article describes methods to achieve these objectives based largely on mining operations at Mount Isa, where sublevel open stoping has been used since 1932. Ore won by this method accounted for a very large percentage of the total tonnage produced at Mount Isa. Major costs associated with sublevel open stoping can be classified as drilling, explosives and charging, and LHD costs. In this article, analyses of these costs are made with particular reference to stope design. Parameters such as burden, drill hole diameter, explosive density, specific charge, etc., are considered in establishing the interrelationship of unit operating costs, as well as total costs of sublevel open stoping.

Most supergene copper heap leach operations today employ forced-aeration, irrespective of ore grade. Unfortunately, there is little published quantification of its benefit. There is a natural desire to strive for the ideal chemical kinetics. The reality, however, is that physical mechanisms control the commercial extraction rate. This paper presents the performance of a number of operations, their operating conditions and physical ore characteristics, which contribute to non-ideal solution distribution and variable extraction rate. Regardless whether one uses forced-aeration, commercial experience to date suggests it is prudent to design for longer leach cycle times to ensure the production target is met.

Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels - from mining and processing to the manufacturing of finished products. In 2010, the estimated real GDP of the United States increased by 2.8 percent compared with 2009 and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.6 trillion (Table 1).Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often rejected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the construction industry during 2010 were rejected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum, which are used almost exclusively in construction. Performances in other sectors were mixed and less easily characterized. Recovery from the economic decline of 2008-2009 became apparent in 2010, as prices for many mineral commodities continued to rise with increasing demand for those materials or the products in which they are found.

Ask someone what they can tell you about the Royal Canadian Mint and most likely the first thing that they will mention, is coinage. The Royal Canadian Mint manufactures Canada's one-cent coins, nickels, dimes and quarters - over 1 billion per year. Most of these coins use copper and nickel as base material, and all of this metal is mined, refined and processed in Canada prior to being shipped to the mint for coin production. In 1985 alone, 1270 metric tons of Canadian nickel and 2160 metric tons of Canadian copper were absorbed in circulating coinage. July 1987 will have marked the introduction of Canada's new one dollar coin, an important new addition to Canada's monetary system. The first phase of this program will consume about 2,235 metric tons of Canadian nickel in the initial production run. Annual requirements in subsequent years are estimated at 225 metric tons. The Royal Canadian Mint is also a major producer of circulating coinage for foreign countries. Since the state-of-the-art Winnipeg plant swung into full production in 1976 the Mint has struck more than 5.2 billion coins for some 35 nations around the world. 1985 sales have increased almost 6 fold over 1984. 1987 already shows commitments for a further significant increase in volume in this business. The use of Canadian metals in export to foreign nations as coinage adds still more to the Royal Canadian Mint's key role as a major market maker for Canada's mining industry. The success of the Mint in this realm can be directly traced to it's 75 years as one of the world's most important refiners of gold. The economics of precious metals -- depending upon who is involved --could be the economics of hope, of fear, indeed of profit and perhaps survival. For those investors seeking capital gains in a puzzling economy, precious metals involve the economics of hope. Those who are convinced that currency soon won't be worth the paper it's printed on turn to precious metals because of the economics of fear. Gold and silver have been a storehouse of wealth since biblical times. The economics of fear during the past 500 years on the Continent has caused almost every European family to make sure a private stockpile or hoard of gold, silver or coins is at hand in case the paper currency of their country undergoes the kind of disaster that came to the German Mark after World War I. Understandably, for mining companies involved in the production of precious metals, the elements of operations and management are directly concerned with the economics of profit -- and perhaps survival. To the American miner the price of precious metals in the marketplace is a matter of daily concern. After decades of selling silver to the US Government at 64.64 cents an ounce, producing silver mines suddenly became faced with prices breaking $5, $10 and $20 per ounce, and approaching $50 an ounce during the period 1978-1981. What should the miner expect one year in the future? Five years?

As tunnel boring machine technology has expanded, so has its range of application. Tunneling machines (TBM's) are tackling tasks today that fifteen years ago were considered "inappropriate". A case in point is incline/decline TBM boring. An incline or decline bore presents peculiar design considerations that differentiate it from a horizontal bore. This paper reviews those design considerations as they apply to TBM's, backup, muck handling and other tunneling subsystems. In addition, several abbreviated case studies are presented. By the review of real life tunneling techniques as well as design considerations, the "appropriateness" of TBM incline/ decline boring today becomes apparent. INCLINE Introduction In contemplating the impact of incline versus horizontal tunnel boring system design, the obvious consideration is gravity. Up-hill boring can be quite different than horizontal boring. Muck, water and machine weight all tend to slide down the incline. Sedimentary deposits of pluvial Lake Bonneville are an important source of sand and gravel suitable for aggregate and construction in Utah. Data on Lake Bonneville basin sand and gravel deposit thickness, volume, grain size, percent of fines, and durability were statistically analyzed to detect variations associated with geologic domains, geographic location, Lake Bonneville shorelines, and sand and gravel deposit type, and to construct quantitative deposit models. Analysis showed several trends; (1) sand and gravel in younger shorelines was slightly more durable and the deposits considerably larger in volume, (2) younger shore- lines are also more likely to contain more than one genetic deposit type, (3) the volume of terrace deposits is larger than beach deposits, (4) terraces and beaches are generally thicker than spits and bars, (5) the northern part of the Bonneville Basin contains slightly more durable sand and gravel than the southern part of the basin and is more likely to contain deposits composed of more than one genetic deposit type, aid (6) the Wasatch domain deposits are composed of more than one genetic deposit type more often than deposits of the Basin and Range domain. Three additional conclusions with immediate economic significance are; (1) the median sand and gravel deposit in the Wasatch domain, 360,000 m3 (275,000 yd3), is three times larger than that of the Basin and Range domain (120,000 m3 [90,000 yd3]), (2) the median deposit thickness in the Wasatch domain, 5.8 m (19.0 ft), is nearly twice that of the Basin and Range domain (3 m [lo ft]), and (3) the Wasatch domain also contains slightly larger diameter gravel. These three conclusions are significant because the trend for sand and gravel development in the Bonneville Basin is to move from the Wasatch domain to the Basin and Range domain. Smaller, thinner deposits with smaller diameter gravel will require more surface area to mine than would have been necessary in the Wasatch domain. The result is a higher cost for sand and gravel in construction projects in the Salt Lake City area, especially since the gravel must also be hauled farther.

Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix widely used as a construction material worldwide. B illions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of C O2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic C O2 emissions each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon footprint of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the nonmetallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned extracting some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major nonmetallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study showed that the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of conventional concrete prepared using OPC.

From the initial planning phases to the closing of a mine, mining is an industry where high attention, care, and sensitivity are needed in every step of the mine life. Since mining projects have a long-life span, exceeding a decade sometimes, managing a whole mine project is challenging, especially when challenges faced due to generational differences are considered, such as tracking and logging data, or the usage of different engineering solutions change over time. Along with the overall hardship caused by the time put into a mining project, the present-time operations are very costly where each minute counts. In present-time operations, every decision made, and every minute used during planning and operations has an impact on the efficiency, safety, and economics of the project. Having extremely harsh conditions in both the excavation and mineral processing operations not only slows down the processes but creates very dangerous environments that need to be handled with precise safety measurements. To support the already established processes, we could implement new technologies and use them to our advantage. Virtual reality (VR) is one of these technologies that we could implement in the mining industry. VR is a technology that emerged in the 1960s creating virtual environments and platforms. The user experiences these virtual environments from head- mounted headsets to rooms with 360 screens, all with different levels of immersion. These higher levels of immersion, create a higher level of presencemaking the users more engaged in the activity they are trying to accomplish. These two factors of immersion and presence are what make VR unique and beneficial. VR has some applications and case studies in the industry along with some research being conducted in universities. Unfortunately, there has not been a comprehensive literature review or analysis regarding only VR and its implementations for the mining industry in the last 5 years. This paper aims to describe what VR is and its relation to the mining industry, in the most recent years. The paper first gives a brief background on what VR is and its key concepts. Secondly, it will give information on how the initial stages of the literature review were conducted and the findings along with discussions. The paper will finish with the conclusion drawn from the discussion and potential future work.

Bolting the mine roof is one of the noisiest underground mining operations. The main contribution to the noise is the drilling of the roof bolt holes, especially drilling in hard rock. Previous research shows that the specific energy consumed in drilling bolt holes is inversely proportional to the bite depth (i.e., penetration per drill revolution). Less specific energy at a reasonably high bite depth means less energy is wasted in the drilling process for producing heat, bit wear and noise. Therefore, proper control of the drilling operation to achieve a reasonably higher bite depth can reduce drilling noise from its sources as a proactive noise control approach. In order to explore the feasibility and develop the proactive technology for reducing drilling noise, drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings. The preliminary results show that significant reduction in noise dose can be achieved by drilling in medium hard rock with uniaxial compressive strength of about 276 bars (4,000 psi) and at a reasonably high bite depth of about 4.6 mm/rev (0.18 in./rev). This paper presents the findings from laboratory experimental studies.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by the natural topography of an open-pit mine. Due to such inversions, the air quality in open-pit mines deteriorates very rapidly. Transport of gaseous pollutants under arctic air inversion is complex and involves an interaction between flow, thermal and convective transport systems. This paper discusses the construction and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the effect of low influent velocity and large gust velocities on the contaminants profiles in the mine. It was found that while higher velocities may remove contaminants from the pit bottom, they may not remove the contaminants from the pit entirely, necessitating artificial mitigation measures.
