Changing mining conditions, legislative issues, rising costs, and the constrained supply of skills and electricity in South Africa, have been some of the criteria forcing mine operators and engineers to review the traditional use of compressed air to power underground hand-held drilling operations in narrow-stope, hard-rock mines. In answering the question, 'What is the best way to power this mine?', they have resorted to trade-off studies with results of limited usefulness, because they are site-specific, and use only a few comparative parameters, based on a small data set. This paper aims to provide definitive, objective, and quantitative decision-making approaches to evaluating alternative energy-delivery systems for stoping in narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on primary and relevant criteria. These include quantifiable criteria such as capital expenditure, operating costs, resulting financial returns, energy and water usage, production performance, life-of-mine, etc. Other important criteria with qualitative aspects are integrated. These are safety, health, and environmental concerns, legislative requirements, business risk, technology change, etc. The paper begins with a review of decision-making processes available, and proposes the use of the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method as a multiple-criteria decision-making tool and the decision tree based on milestone-driven uncertainties, to validate the selection of the energy delivery system. The results of a multiple-criteria questionnaire completed by a variety of industry experts and professionals, such as production and operation managers, consultants, suppliers, and techno-financial analysts, are discussed. The evaluation indicates the potential for hydropower to be the best solution for narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on current information, mine design layout and production.

The paper reviews the results to date of an integrated research programme currently being conducted by CSIR Mining Technology, aimed at impacting significantly on concentrated mining with face advance rates of up to 20 times faster than presently achieved. Consideration is given to the interplay between innovative technologies for continuous non-explosive mining or rock comminution underground and lateral hydraulic transportation in cross cuts, haulages and eventually hydro hoisting. Novel technologies for underground comminution of reef and development waste and an innovative pumping system suitable for the hydraulic transportation of coarse comminuted rock are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on South African gold mine reef and waste samples comminuted by electric shock wave comminution technology. The innovative TORE® pump system appears to be well suited for the successful hydraulic transportation of rock, produced by electric shock wave comminution, at solids concentrations between 45 % and 67 % by mass.

In over ninety per cent of mineral sand plants, the most commonly used equipment is the spiral concentrator. The tonnage treated over typical spiral plants can range from as low as 200 ton per hour up to 6 000 tons per hour. Due to the limited capacity of each spiral, plants consist of multiple spirals assembled into banks. The mixture of minerals present in the sand feed requires several spiral stages to achieve the desired mineral recovery. Due to the complexity of the spiral circuits, there are always some design and operating problems that present themselves in plants. These range from slurry distribution, spirals operating at incorrect design parameters and feed variations. The material being treated is difficult to maintain in suspension due to its high density, resulting in segregation and preferential flow in pipelines, distributors and sumps. The objective of this paper is to highlight common problems associated with spiral installations to designers and operators of plants. Practical solutions are recommended in order to prevent and minimize these mistakes in the design. These solutions may be used to improve performance on operating plants.

Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of ladle slag composition on the decreasing behaviour of aluminum content in steel, i.e., reoxidation of molten steel in contact with slag, using a vertical tube furnace. The steel composition and the slag system chosen were for ultra low carbon and CaO-Al2O3-FeO-MnO-MgO based to simulate ULC steel grades. It has been observed that the reoxidation rate shows a good relationship with (T. Fe) content in slag. In case of (T. Fe) content higher than 1.5 weight per cent, the reoxidation rate increases linearly with increasing (T. Fe) content. For a given (T. Fe) content, it decreases with the increasing (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. However, in the case of (T. Fe) content lower than 1.5 weight percent, no particular relationships are observed between the reoxidation rate and (T. Fe) content or the (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. These results were used to propose for an aim a slag composition for the ULC steel grades in a steelmaking plant. The emergence of new steel grades is largely driven by the need to produce high quality steel at a competitive price. The principal aims are to attain ultra-high purity, (especially low interstitial elements) and ultra-cleanliness (by the control of the inclusion content and size). Whereas the steel used to build the Titanic contained 650 ppm sulphur, resulting in MnS stringer-inclusions 25 mm in length, modern quality requirements for arctic pipelines would only allow 10 ppm of sulphur and inclusions in ball-bearing steels must be smaller than 5µm. Most developments are aimed at hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburisation. Because ferroalloys are added during or after the refining step, it is the secondary (ladle) refining production technologies that are of specific interest to the ferroalloy producer. Through ladle treatment, hydrogen and nitrogen contents are reduced, ultra-low levels of solute impurities are attained and the shapes as well as the composition of inclusions are modified. Steelmakers are concerned about the cost effectiveness of the use of ferroalloys such as consistent product analysis and delivery, improved financing arrangements and technical support. Minimal variation in product sizing is vital because it impacts on handling problems and because particle size determines the rate of particle dissolution. The required ferroalloy product quality depends on the specific use but in general sulphur, phosphorous and nitrogen contents are of concern. Apart from the presence of trace and impurity elements, ferroalloys also contain inclusions. For example, ferromanganese may contain MnO-MnS-SiO2 inclusions while high-carbon ferro-chrome may contain different kinds of Cr-Mn-spinels. The presence of these impurities and inclusions has a significant impact on steel production techniques and cost and hence, on the selection and use of ferroalloys. The interrelationship between ferroalloy quality and steel production technology is plant and product specific and hence, effective communication between ferroalloy suppliers and steel producers is essential.

An extensive laboratory grinding study was carried out on a magnetite ore in order to assess the grinding behaviour of magnetic concentrate and tail from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS).The test work involved Bond ball mill testing, rod milling, low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), and batch ball milling down to product sizes of around P80~25 microns. A total of 18 Bond tests and over 150 batch grinding tests and sieve sizing were carried out. Throughout the grinding tests, power draw was continuously monitored. The relationship between the grinding energy and product size was analysed using the conventional energy-size concepts. It was found that the Rittinger equation fits the experimental data well. However, Bond?s equation does not fit the experimental data well, and therefore a modified Bond equation was developed. Differences in grinding properties between the magnetic and non-magnetic component were analysed and compared to the bulk ore. It was found that grinding properties differ significantly and therefore separate grinding test work may be required for each grinding step in the magnetite ore beneficiation flowsheet. Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

"This paper provides guidelines on performing mass and energy balance modelling involving coal and coal derivatives. Usually, the inputs to a pyrometallurgical process would be specified in terms of elements and compounds. Reliable thermochemical data is more widely available for species involving uniquely defined, relatively smaller molecules. However, in the case of coal, the molecules are extremely large and not uniquely defined. Consequently, modelling processes involving coal and its derivatives involve several potential pitfalls. These are outlined in the present paper.It was found that coal proximate analysis should not be regarded as absolute; it could vary with several parameters, including heating rate. For modelling, the use of ultimate analyses should be considered a preferable option to proximate analyses, where ‘fixed carbon’ and ‘volatiles’ are not defined in terms of chemical composition. Significant errors could be incurred if the larger molecules are neglected during calculation of the calorific value (CV) of coal gas (the gas liberated when coal is heated in the absence of oxygen).For elemental analysis determination, the oxygen content (which is calculated by balance) should be checked to ensure it is within the expected range. For representation of sulphur in coal, one should avoid doublecounting due to SO3 in the ash analysis.Potentially, oxygen in coal could be represented as O2, H2O, CO, or CO2.However, use of some of these species without considering the experimentally determined gross CV leads to significant errors in the energy balance. If coal enthalpy is calculated from elemental analyses without correction, representation of coal oxygen as H2O(l) gives reasonable accuracy. Coal volatiles could be represented by a complex mixture of compounds, even using different oxygen-containing species than these four, provided the enthalpy is corrected.It is recommended that an ‘enthalpy correction value’ be incorporated in energy balances involving combustion, devolatilization, or conversion of coal and coal derivatives, e.g. coke, char, or tar. That would imply that proximate analysis, elemental analysis, as well as the gross CV would be required for all solid or liquid coal-derived substances being modelled. No other correction due to carbon being present in a form other than graphite should be used, as that would imply double-counting some effects."

"A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. This paper attempts to model long-term production scheduling problems by chance constrained binary integer programming in a stochastic environment. This stochastic model is set up to account for ore block grade uncertainty. The probability distribution function of grade in each block is used as a stochastic input to the optimization model. This distribution function in each block should be determined using a Geostatistical Simulation approach. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are then achieved, which are in the form of nonlinear in binary variables. A confidence level at which it is desired that the uncertain constraints holds, is specified in each scheduling period. Rather than the previous risk-based model, this formulation will yield schedules with a high chance of achieving planned production targets while maximizes the expectation of net present value and minimizing the variance function simultaneously. Using this method, the grade uncertainty is integrated explicitly into the optimization process.

[Zr(C9H6NO)4]?(HCON(CH3)2)?(H2O), where (C9H6NO) = 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxH), was synthesized and characterized. This tetrakis-coordinated zirconium complex crystallized in the triclinic crystal system (Pi, Z=2) along with water and N,N?-dimethylformamide(DMF) solvate in the asymmetric unit. The metal atom is surrounded by four N,O-donating bidentate ox-ligands that are arranged around the metal centre to give a square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron with a small distortion towards a dodecahedral geometry. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular interactions of adjacent oxine ring systems in neighbouring molecules, as well as hydrogen bonding of the aqua and DMF solvate molecules, linking the molecular entities into a supramolecular three-dimensional network.

"Investigations of flotation characteristics of Lumwana and Kansanshi ores using formulated frothers were carried out. Of the six frothers tested, two came from the alcohol family, two from the glycol family and last two were formulated products. The initial work involved determining the optimum mesh of grind and frother dosage for Lumwana and Kansanshi ores. Further work involved carrying out surface tension, bubble size and froth stability measurements. Finally, water recovery tests were conducted at Lumwana and Kansanshi mine sites. For froth stability tests, six frothers were tested on a two-phase (water–air) system using the Bikerman column flotation cell, while water recovery tests were conducted using a total of seven frothers, including the standards for each plant. The results of the testwork showed that (i) although a stable froth is essential for optimum recovery of valuable minerals, a higher molecular weight frother, like Dowfroth 250, caused poor selectivity when used on fine ores and (ii) a lower molecular weight frother was suited for Lumwana ore, while a mid to higher molecular weight formulated product was suitable for Kansanshi sulphide ore. Firstly, froth stability tests were conducted using six frothers, two from the glycol family (Dowfroth 200 and Dowfroth 250), two from alcohol family (MIBC and pine oil) and other two from the formulated family (Betafroth 20 and Betafroth 245), at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Mineral Research (CMR) laboratories. Froth formation and stability measurements were conducted using the Bikerman column flotation cell."

The decisive action taken by mine managements in recent years has been the main factor in bringing about the present downward trend in mine fires. A better understanding of the fundamental factors that govern the ignition and spread of fires. obtained as a result of investigations into mine fires, has provided useful guidance to production personnel. Similar investigations into fire-fighting techniques have assisted the Rescue Training Service and mines to institute more effective fire-fighting techniques. Some of the more important findings of recent investigations in these areas are outlined.

DC arc furnaces are widely used for steel scrap melting as well as for reductive smelting of ore fines. Industrial smelting applications include the smelting of chromite to produce ferrochromium, the smelting of ilmenite to produce titania slag and pig iron, and the recovery of cobalt from nonferrous smelter slags. A number of myths and misconceptions are widely held, especially regarding: the age of the technology, the use of a hollow electrode, arc stability and shape, arc and bath radiation, interaction between the arc and molten slag, electrical behaviour of arcs and slags, a comparison between AC and DC furnaces, DC reactors, the lifespan of bottom electrodes, and the applicability of DC arc furnaces to various metallurgical systems.

The objective with mine planning is to consistently deliver production conforming to quality and quantity requirements throughout the life of the mine. The complexity of the operational context of the modern mine extends far beyond the actual production actions and there is a need to find ways of analysing and managing this extended environment. A well-established approach to handling complex situations rely on the creation of representative models that use classification and visualization strategies. An example of the use of a classification scheme is the periodic table of the elements. All physical matter can be expressed as combinations of basic elements. Not only is the periodic table useful in classifying and identifying matter but it can also be used for the prediction of the properties of unknown matter and compositions of elements.

Moreover, wear or, at least, that part of the wear which is due to the cumulative effect of minute scratches, is linked to the hardness disparity concept. Abrasivity, in this context, is a relative concept, pertaining to a metal-rock pair, rather than to a rock. Based on this assumption, a methodology has been developed and checked against actual cases, enabling description of the abrasiveness of a rock or the abrasion resistance of a metal through the ratio of comparable quantitative indicators. The paper describes the methods and provides examples of applications to practical cases (namely: rock cutting, excavation by means of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), rock crushing, and hydro-mill cutting).

There is an increasing awareness of the importance of including an assessment of environmental liabilities in the preparation of bankable feasibility documents. This means that environmental assessments of proposed, existing and decommissioned mine sites have to be undertaken for the purposes of quantifying environmental liabilities and assessing potential risks. This paper examines the need for considering environmental liabilities before describing the approach adopted in undertaking due diligence studies for the preparation of bankable feasibility documents and some of the difficulties experienced. Finally, some concluding remarks are made and the implications for the mining industry are discussed.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have found their applications in the modelling of unit operations of mineral processing plants. In this research, laboratory-scale tests were conducted, using a three-inch diameter Mozley hydrocyclone. Main parameters included pressure drop at inlet, solid per cent, vortex and apex diameter were adjusted. The corrected cut size (d50c) and the flow rates of underflow and overflow were determined. Multi layers perceptron (MLP) feed forward network architectures were designed to predict the responses. The results showed a good correlation between experimental and network output, for corrected cut size and flow rates. "SynopsisCommencement of the next phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a year or so away from becoming reality. Some 50 km of tunnels in the form of access adits, shafts, diversion tunnels, and main waterways will be constructed. Sprayed concrete will form an integral part of the temporary and permanent rock support systems that will be installed. Furthermore, the use of sprayed concrete as a final tunnel lining solution was proposed as a viable alternative to concrete linings in the feasibility studies that preceded the forthcoming implementation phase.The aim of this paper is to make the reader aware of all the sprayed concrete related issues that engineers tend to grapple with during the design and construction of tunnel projects and other underground works. Primarily, these issues would include selection of applicable design parameters, technical specifications, construction application methods, quality control and, most importantly in the context of final or permanent linings, the durability of sprayed concrete.The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 12 has been tasked specifically to publish a set of recommendations on the Quality and Control of the Application of Sprayed Concrete and the Testing of Sprayed Concrete for Durability. These tasks were also further explored at the recent World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2015) that was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia at the end of May 2015.IntroductionSprayed concrete is presented in a variety of shapes, designs, forms, application methods and accompanying terminologies including shotcrete, gunite, pneumatically applied concrete, and the like. The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) decided to standardize on a single terminology, namely ‘sprayed concrete’, in order to simplify specification, interpretation of guidelines, and codes of practice."
